Holux GPSlim 236 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Is it correct that this receiver doesn't operate while being charged?
Mines only seems to work while on battery - as soon as I plig in the charger, it goes off.

Keep an eye on this thread. I have just charged my 236 up so need to let it run out of juice.
I'll post a result when I get to test it.

Just tried with my old Nokia battery.
With the mains charger plugged in, the unit is operating as normal.
Hope that helps.

Mine works fine whilst charging

I have to add to my posts that when I recieved mine (without plug adapters) I tried my charger in a 2pin - 3pin adapter and the charger wouldnt work.
I plugged it directly into the 3 pin socket and it is fine. Obviously the adapter wasnt making the correct contacts.
Just as a silly question, your charger is illuminating and the green charge light on the GPS is on isn't it??
I know some suppliers of these send the adapters out with them.

Holux 236 Slim
I have the Holux 236 Slim and the GPS works fine while plugged into the chargers that came with it (both A/C and car). It will not operate with other USB chargers however. It behaves just like you said. It charges while the GPS is switched off, but does not operate with either an A/C adapter or car charger from another device (like my Cingular 8125).
Also the cable that came with the A/C adapter looks like any other USB to mini-5 USB (in fact I have used it as one for my Cingular 8125), but it will not work as a USB cable with the Holux to connect it to my laptop as a USB GPS. Holux says you have to buy their special USB cable to make that work.

You may have a bad one. Mine works both ways.

I am afraid that may be the case my friends.
May be an idea to phone Holux if you havent already done so.

I need an extra car charger for my 236 and have tried universal ones. These don't work unless the 236 is switched off, because the 236 mini usb is somehow differant. I think when you plug in a universal car charger in the 236 it goes into mouse mode & switches off bluetooth.I did notice that if you only touched the mini usb ends together it worked ok.plugged all the way in no. I needed to hard reset to get it working . I have contacted holux Europe to see if i can buy an extra Holux car charger. Very annoying!

Echoing what others have said, universal chargers don't work. I've tried as well. Using the supplied car charger though, never a problem. I've used it on numerous long road trips, powered on and plugged in with the supplied charger without issue. Forgot it on one trip, and experienced the same concerns as others: didn't charge whilst on on a universal charger.
And, just in case the OP is interested, I'm using Mapopolis with mine.

That may be it then - I haven't tried it with that car charger that came with it, I was having the problem while charging it with my O2 XDA Mini's charger (same connection).
Why on Earth would that be though?

No offence, but it comes with a mains charger also. Why would you not use that??
Checking the details on them both, they both are 5vdc at 1 amp.
Just going by the connection being the same doesn't necessarily mean that the output voltages are the same.
I have a standard cigarette lighter in my lorry, only problem is, its a 24v connection and would oblitorate any 12v equipment in a split second. But it looks the same !!!
I dont mean to flame you, but if a charger is supplied with something, then why on earth not use it? After all, thats what its there for.

Why on Earth would I want to use up 2 plug sockets in my 4-way adaptor for 2 charges that are the same? (one for my phone and one for my GPS receiver).
Since either charger will charge either device, why not just have 1 plugged in, since I'll never actually need to charge both at the same time while in the house?

As I said, I wasnt trying to flame you and your point is taken but the whole purpose of this thread was to ask why it ISN'T doing what you thought it should, even though it charges. (As it should), LOL
If that makes sense, LOL
Ok then looking at the same point but from the other side, will the Holux charger charge the Wizard as it should??

Car charger for xda2

Hi anyone can help me here,
I need to know what is the voltage and current for charging a xda2. I am looking at modifying a nokia phone car charger to charge my xda2. From what i have read, it the output 5V and 2A (i took this from the cradle) but can the current be lower than 2A to charge. Thanks.
I do not know how you could do this, but have you tried this?
http://www.pdamods.com/proddetail.asp?prod=XDACC
It is a car charger and sync cable in one, so looks like good value..
5-6V, 500 mA should do it.
Just take care you use the correct polarity on the connector.
Car charger for XDA2
Why bother? Standard O2 USB sunc cable is only £12 from eXpansys and will charge the XDA from any powered USB port (eg your laptop/desktop) and you can buy generic cig lighter USB adapters for about £8. No risk, no hassle

Because there are always people who like to experiment.
And why throw something old away if it can be adapted for something new with minimal effort?
Good answer!!

Yes it can. All the old XDA stuff was only 1A. A USB port (powered without external power) is in the region of 500ma.
The only thing with lowering the current is that tha XDA2 is sensetive to discharge.i.e. less than 25% battery power and it wont charge via USB!!
Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the help. I think my only answer to not spending the dollar is more towards wire management. My current charger wire is retractable and when i am not using it, it retracts back and keep the dahboard clean & neat. As i charge my BT and also xda2 in my car, the number of wires sticking out is quite messy. Not sure if all has the same problem but it's just me wanting to be neat.

Best regards,

Cannot charge with car charger can any expert help please

Cannot charge xda executive with car charger ,when connected nothing happens light does not go red and also the connection icon does not show
make sure you dont have a faulty charger... dont know what you are using but i believe most people use the cigarette lighter to usb converter and then just use the usb cable... also have you tried pressing the on and off swith with the charger plugged in ?

car charger
Hi and thanks for the fast reply mate <yes it is a new charger from o2 .
No i have not tried the on off with the switch ,but would i still be able to charge when i am using tomtom
Whell....I use the cigarette lighter to usb adapter and usb cable ...at times i have had to quik press the on/off swith and at times plug and unplug the cable to get it to charge ....I used this as a "jump start" method only and no problems after that with using it whillst on charge (even with tomtom)..... other than that you may have a faulty charger or fag lighter to usb adapter (I never seen what a o2 one looks like).

Is the charger one especially for the exec?
I found normal usb chargers for phones like V3 or a GPS charger cant supply enough current to charge an exec.
hi, yeah i have had this problem, and so have a few of my clients, seems that not enough juice flows through the non branded versions, unlike from o2's or Brodits cables
I found that a regular USB cable into a Cigarette Lighter -> USB Socket didn't work until I joined pin 4 to pin 5 on the USB B Mini plug. All of the adapters I had that worked, but only powered (no data, i.e. Brodit and mains adapter) seemed to have pin 4 joined to pin 5 (pin 4 isn't normally connected at all). Once I did that mod it worked fine.
Cheers,
Steve.

Orange shops carry a charger intended for HTC manufactured devices (i.e. the SPV C500/M500 range) which works fine. Only £9.99.

i-Mate JAM mini USB pinouts?

Does anybody have them?
The reason is, I would like to use the same charger I got with a Holux GPSlim 236 but I don't dare risk it until I see the pin configurations?
The Holux comes with a mini USB car charger which would be ideal as I could charge whichever device needs charging using only one cable (likely to be the JAM that needs charging!)

Use it, you will be fine. The Pin-outs are standard.
I charge my Magician with the in-car charger cable that came with a bluetooth headset.

Wizard Car Charger

So I visited my local Walmart and discovered a car charger, designed for Blackberry 6200 through 7500 and Motorola RAZR series phones.
The connector is the same, mini USB B.
$25,000 Question: Can I use this to charge my TMO MDA? Same connection, just worried the voltage or wiring might not be the same.
The AC chargers that came with my Razr and MDA are the same voltage-wise (5V) but not the same Amps.
MDA is 5V 1A, Razr is 5V 0.5A, they are not the same
However, it shouldn't damage the battery, just charge slower.
Just so you know, USB ports output 5V at 0.5A as well.
Edit: Sorry, I realize I completely changed my post, but didn't want incorrect info out there.
Thanks...I figured that, but was just making sure.
I got it in case of emergency...I almost always charge via USB; just leave it plugged in all day.
But you never know.....
Thanks!

Don't expect it to charge if you battery is below 30-20% charge. I'm not sure why this is an issue but it has bitten me in the rear once already.
Does anybody know why it's a problem for "less-than-1amp" chargers to charge back from the low threshold?
boxwave.com sells a 1 amp car charger. It has a USB port, so you just use it with any cable that normally plugs into a USB port. Since my Globalsat GBH-820 BT adapter came with a cable with large USB at one end, and _two_ mini USB at the other end, I can charge the GBH-820 and my 8125 at the same time.

That's not true,... if you use the VersaCharger like I do. This is where I learned of the "charging only" cable that Boxwave sells (how conveinent) and then they sell a Sync/charger for USB only. I have a Boxwave VersaCharger that I can't use without buying their "cable" to make it charge the 8125. I found this out because I have a Belkin retractable sync/charge cable that doesn't work with the VersaCharger as I had hoped. The cable that you have may work with 1amp charger but it probably won't work with theVersaCharger.
What is the output on the "min-usb" connector end of the cable? This sounds like the cable that I need for the 2 devices that I use.
...I wonder if they are putting some electronics in the cable connector...?
I bought the bundle that had a car charger (I have the regular; not the high output; not the Versa) and two mini-Sync (retractable) cables. I got caught by the fact that one of them is "charging only" when I was trying to use the "charging only" cable between my laptop and my TI-84plus calculator. I switched to the mini-USB cable that came with my calculator, and it worked fine, as did my phone with AS. That's when I looked closer at the two mini-sync cables and noticed that one was for "charging only". So, that mini-sync cable (the charging only) stays in the car, and works fine for charging my phone or my GBH-820. The really odd thing is that the "charging only" cable looks "thicker" than the one that works for syncing. Maybe lower gauge wire to help the higher current flow easier.
I have also used my other USB-miniUSB cables with my car adapter. E.g. the cable that came with the phone, the cable that came with my TI-84plus calculator.
My Bluetake headphones came with their own USB cable that has, for lack of any better term, an ultraminiUSB (or some kind of proprietary connector, cause it's not marked with a USB symbol like the other cables) plug at the end. I just plug the regular USB end of that cable into the car charger, and it charges the Bluetake's just fine.
Excellent car charger for Wizard
I have purchased and used the "Ecovell 4x USB" adapter on both a Wizard and a Universal. It provides a 2 Amp output which is equivalent to the AC adapter and works with any mini-USB cable. It will charge a Universal from absolutely dead which I have not been able to do with any other adapter. Here is the link to the item on Yes Depot:
http://www.yesdepot.com/product/ud0520.html
I've ordered from them and the service was OK. I haven't seen the item available anywhere else.

Dave

Charging question

I recently purchased Holux GPSSlim 236 which came with car charger kit. Since both Holux and TyTN uses USB cable to charge'em up, I tried plugging TyTN to the Holux car charger and gave it a try.
Nothing happens, even the pin layouts are identical. So is there some other pins connected before TyTN would charge. Obviously pins 1 and 5 just doesn't cut it.
So question is, what is the pin layout for TyTNs own car charger?
Don't risk it.....
Tried the other way with my o2 XDA SP charger and thought I had blown up the GPS.. I had to take out the battery and re insert it before it came back to life.......
There must be some pin out difference between the PDA charger (same for my O2 XDA sp and the Orange M3100) and the Holux gps charger.
Luckly you did it that way round.... I tried that first ......
Must be someone out there that knows the difference.........
Phil
