Is it worth updating ROM? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi,
I have ROM version 1.5.4.2 WWE (11/8/05)
Is it worth upgrading this? Is there any risk involved? What aditional functionality will it give me?

ok, I found the updated ROM and instructions in a different thread (this site is the best!) I read what extra functionality it gives, but what I meant was, will it actaully make my wizard any better or quicker or anything? I don't use the o2 UI so that whole part of the update wont be used anyway.
I also read somewhere that the updated ROM puts an annoying battery icon somewhere on the today screen, so based on this and the fact that I wont be using the o2 UI is it worth updating the ROM?

It'll be at least quicker to boot in. Check out my benchmark results between your very ROM version and those of the latest ROM's at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1233&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
That is, DO upgrade.

Thanks for the info guys, I will update my ROM soon as I can (just tried the ftp site but cant access, will try again later)

Sorry, one more thing, Molski your latest ROM says it's a custom T mobile ROM, my phone came from O2, can I still use it? Or should I stick with the latest O2 ROM?

If you CID unlock your device (with LokiWiz 0.2b) you can use any Rom.

Help on flashing a rom

My friend bought a mda pro(t-mobile) from germany(german language) but before getting back to his home country he brought to a phone shop in china(during plane transfer)the guy flashed it with a unlocked qtek(english, since it can be used with the local provider)
But he was very unhappy with the formating(the phone numbers, emegency call numbers, and the keyboard QWERTZ)
He went to me for help since the local phone shops(very small town) can't do it(lack of roms?)
I have ZERO experience of flashing roms, anyone can show me a step by step of flashing roms and where do i run the programs(PC or phone) ect.
the below things that i would like to know.
1.Whats the driffence between an upgrade and a flash?
2.Whats the driffence between a radio rom,ext rom,a main rom(I got a pretty good idea but it can't hurt to be sure)
3.will need to be unlock again after a rom change?(qtek rom to dopod900)
4.how to i shut down the device(so far i only know how to put it in standby mode which drains power)
5.How to i flash a rom?(dopod 900 from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=48636 BTW the newest would be best)
6.Are there sevaral methods of doing it?
7.what are the chances of failure/sucess if i follow the instructions carefully
8.what does WWE stands for?
9.why they are zips, rars, cabs, exe for roms?
10.How much battery level does it need to flash a rom?

Radio ROM is the ROM for the GSM module,
Extended ROM is a package containing operator customizations that will be run after each hard-reset,
Main ROM is the Windows Mobile OS.

If you have SIM-Unlocked or CID-Unlocked once your device, you won't have to do it again.

Put it into flight-mode and then turn it off. If you don't put it in flight mode, the GSM module will stay active.

Get the ROM,
you need nk.nbf for the main rom, ms_.nbf for the extended ROM, and radio.nbf for the radio rom.
you can combine different ROMs from different packages if you want
then either re-pack CID-unlock (SuperCID) your device, use a NoID utility to flash, or re-package the ROMs with your CID-code.
After that, just run the update utility and follow the instructions packed with that.
6.Are there sevaral methods of doing it?

Quick answer: No
Long answer: there are some other ways of doing it (like using an SD-card), but they're quite a lot more complicated, and the traditional method of flashing is good enough for most things.
7.what are the chances of failure/sucess if i follow the instructions carefully

I'd say 3%. I've had a few things go wrong, but I've never had a failure that I couldn't fix. (well, ok, I dropped my previous universal, but that doesn't count as flashing )
8.what does WWE stands for?

9.why they are zips, rars, cabs, exe for roms?

The official packages are self-extracting .exe files, but you can extract them using winrar if you want to get just the ROM files.
.rar and .zip files are often just re-packaged ones.
.cab are installers for Windows Mobile, I haven't seen any ROMs packaged in a .cab though (There are .cab files in extended ROM though)
10.How much battery level does it need to flash a rom?

Just to be on the safe side, make sure it's fully loaded
But it doesn't matter that much, as it charges from USB anyway...
If there's anything else you need, don't hesitate to ask.

New to HTC Touch (from i760)

Hey I just got the touch for Verizon and have a few rookie questions.
I read a lot about changing the ROM but am a bit confused. What is flashing? Is this necessary? I see that it is really dangerous and irreversible for Verizon. I see general instructions, but are there Verizon specific ones around anywhere?
Also I downloaded this Valhalla gps cab to get GPS working. After I resetted, I downloaded google maps and tried the gps with no luck. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Also I'd like to get that Manilla 2d on my phone. What's the best route for this? Am I risking getting rid of the cube?
I know I am asking a lot of questions, if you can answer one I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Zack

Great switch! I had to ditch my i760 too !
Flashing is the term used to basically say your upgading your ROM. It's not necassary, but once you do it, you'll be much happier with the overall performance.
Other vocab to know:
ROM: Read-Only Memory, all your system files, your OS.
Radio: This is for your phone, and GPS, you need a v3.XX for GPS functions.
RUU: ROM Update Utility, the application used on your PC to flash the new ROM.
Bootloader: When flashing, this will be the screen you need enter, you can enter it by pressing and holding the Power & Camera buttons, then soft reset. You only need to enter this when checking SPL versions, and for flashing.
Kitchen: The set of files used to cook a ROM.
Cooking: Another term for creating a ROM.
You need to read as much as you can before you decide to flash a new ROM. When you do, you'll see those terms thrown around quite a bit, so know you won't be as confused, I hope. Those are the ones I could think of off the top of my head.
For now, flashing the xv6900 is irreversible, so if you decide to do it, make sure you are fully aware of what you are doing, and be prepared in the event something goes wrong. But, if you can successfully update the ROM, you'll be happy with the end result. Trust me, it looks confusing, but when you're done you'll see it was really a piece of cake !
The reason your GPS does not work is because you have the stock Radio, it must be updated first, but as I said before, be sure to have a good knowledge on what you are doing.
If you want the Manilla 2D, just install the .cab file from its thread. It will not remove your cube, since they are two different "apps." But, my suggestion is to get rid of it, since it's quite useless, just search around, once you find the other great developments here, you'll want to ditch it ASAP.
For extras, see my Tips & Tricks thread, link in my sig.
What rom do you recommend? I am ready to flash it. I am looking for threaded text as well. I'd really like to use GPS as well. And I though there was a ROM with Manilla 2d, maybe I am confused. Anyways, please recommend a popular rom, and where I could find some instructions.
Thanks so much.
I e-mailed you, but I then figured I should make it public

There really isn't a "popular" ROM in the sense each one is different and better suited for different people. 99% of the ROMs available will have the updated Radio as a mandatory step, so GPS will be included, and threaded SMS is a default for WM6.1, also a standard in most ROMs. I think there are a few Manilla 2D ROMs available, but all it really means is, it's included with the ROM.
When you flash the new ROM, you update all the system files, so after a flash, if you were to do a hard reset, you will not go back to the original VZW ROM, but the new one you flashed. So, with that in mind, do some browsing around to find what's included in the ROMs available.
All the ROMs you find will be different, they will have different apps, tweaks, and graphics. Just think what you would prefer, a fast ROM, lots of included apps, or one with more storage memory?
After your first flash, the Radio will be updated, and the device will remain unlocked. So unless you need a new Radio version, which I highly doubt, you can flash any ROM of your choice, without having to unlock the device or update the Radio. You'll probably go through a few to see which one you like the best.
Also, make sure you have read everything possible, thinking about this logically, you've got a 50% chance to do this wrong, nothing personal. Just be sure your confident you have read enough, and know you can fix it if there is a problem. As you know, it's irreversible, before you flash, ask yourself if you have a spare $300-$400 just in case.
Happy Flashing !
just discovered this, which is what ive been looking for which should help you.. its in the wiki tab but heres the link

thanks champjt your post was informative
Wow 50 percent chance? I don't like those chances. Is there a clear step by step instructions link somewhere, so I can increase my chances?
Also it says to delete your partnership with activesync. I'd like to keep all my contacts and datebook. Is this necessary?
Also, is it possible to just update the radio? Just to get GPS? And if so, how risky is this?

Updating the Radio and flashing are pretty much the same, considering you need to flash the new Radio for a new ROM, for the GPS enabled ones at least, which is almost all of them. Once you have unlocked your device and updated the Radio, flashing the ROM will be done almost in the snap of your fingers, the ROM is the easiest and most painless part. The first two, the Radio and unlocking, are the ones you need to pay the most attention to, and you should only really need to do those steps once for any ROM flashes ever on this device.
I recomment OMJ's bell ROM's, you can find them on ppc geeks. What's nice if you decide to install the manilla 2d today plugin it seems to work near perfect with his roms.

Can anyone upload touchflo 3D for Touch Pro 2
I am looking for this too for my HD, i think you have to update the rom. Or can we do it using just a Cab?

ROM? thn it's hard for those worry bout warranty & those who using for business purpose like me.
FYI, touchflo 3D was created using cab for xperia & i'm using it. maybe can somebody create it in cab too?
Flashing a rom is not a problem for warranty - I've returned a few Kaisers, an HD and an Xperia, each I had flashed custom ROMs on, and they were all accepted.
Just re-flash the original and they don't mind, so don't let this hold you back from trying new ROMS. Use for business purposes is not a problem either; many cooked roms are more stable than the originals, but just don't try early releases, wait until most bugs are fixed before flashing.
checkout tf3d hd3 beta in blackstone forum. i have used it successfully many times on my x1 and obviously my HD too

Unlocking voids the warranty.
Sometimes they won't care,
but you never know.
And if it was created with cab,
then maybe there is hope for you.
Not quite sure as I don't use manilla at all.
But will once I get my TP2!

Android 2.1 stock in update.zip format

Hi All,
I have tried looking in the dev section (please dont flame me lol) but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone tell me if there is a standard GSM 2.1 that I can load onto my hero in update.zip format. I dont mind about having root, but I want to keep the recovery image so I can install custom roms again at a later stage.
Anyone care to point me in the right direction, or tell me im retarded and I cant do this???
Thanks
I did a one before which worked perfect then I took it down because I got people complaining so I redid it... which did not work so perfect so I left it to others.

I am pretty sure you are doing something seriously wrong. I have tested most of the custom ROM's out there (Currently on WildPuzzle coz I kinda prefer LWP and Sense), and, they have never (hardly, if ever), crashed on me.
Besides, I just checked the Sunnabh thread, it hardly looks like self praise. Most of them have just said the exact thing the ROM author claims his ROM does, that it is stable. That said, if you are not satisfied, kindly move on, and, dont bad mouth the ROM author. He is not obliged to provide you with "stable" (as per your definiton) ROMs.
Get the OTA FroYo update, and enjoy your Wildfire.
Cheers

You picked the "works perfect" posts and quote it in first page.
How about I quote all the "not working" posts and "do you have a patch" posts ?
Your work should speak not the keyboard. Its totally unwarranted from your side to do anything like that. I have never seen any other developer design such a page.

If I read the thread correctly, I think it is written as "ADDON PACKAGES and INSTALLERS". And, I guess, the name should be enough for you to know the meaning and the reason for the "patches", i.e., they are not bugfix packages or anything, but, additional functionalities which are upto the end user whether they want to install it or not.
It's not that if you dont get the patches, the ROM will crash on you a thousand times (If you do everything properly ,which, most of them have).
That apart, patch requests are again requests to improve the functionality and add convenience features, not bugfixes, which I came across the thread.

ANYWAY BACK ON TOPIC:
I noticed that the app called "SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse" (google it) has an option for unrooting...I haven't personally tried it (ended up using Unrevoked Linux LIVECD to root).
Let us know how it goes.
I noticed everyone is just focusing on flashing the wildfire with custom rom. Isn't there other ways like faking the signature so the update can still be installed?
I have the same problem, when I tried the OTA update it fails with message "invalid signature". I guess the rom installer is checking the signature of the currently installed OS.
Maybe one solutions is to restore the original HTC 2.1-update1 rom then run the OTA froyo update. Then in the near future, there will be root solutions for Wildfire froyo.
