Getting Skype to work - the answer is here. - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

First, thanks to AsGF2MX and his topic here
This tweak is not new, im just bringing it to the attention of those who only read the prophet forums.
It would appear the high and low CPU version of skype are most likely the same, the only difference being which codec it uses to compress the audio (high uses a smarter and higher quality codec resulting in high voice quality).
While low has a lower voice codec it is possible to make it even lower. The actually call quality is fine, the only difference is IT WORKS!
Heres what to do:
1) Install Skype for Low CPU's from http://www.skype.com
2) Run the attached CAB or modify the registry yourself (HKLM\Software\Skype\Phone\Audio\DisableCodecs and set it to read ILBC G729 EG711U)
Thats it, no need to overclock. You cant call the skype echo123 or Linux users as they dont support this codec but everyone else should work fine on WiFi.

Now even easier. Below is an install which will install skype that will work on the Prophet/JAMin/M600/S200.
What is it?
Its just the bog standard Skype 2.0.0.51 from skype.com but I added the registry keys required to acutally get it working on this device. I also added the Today plugin from the new Skype 2.1 beta.
How?
1. Remove any existing Skype install
2. Click here to Download Skype for Prophet and run the CAB file on your device
3. Launch skype and logon
Also attached is a seperate download to add the today plugin found in the 2.1 Beta for those that dont want to fully re-install.

Wizard?
Any idea if this will work with a Wizard?

Yes, the original thread I took the tip from was for teh wizard. Same processor, same outcome.

Work fine, at least in my device, thanks a lot!

As for me.

Seems to work fine for me too! Thanks a bunch

This is great. Thanks a ton! I finally am looking forward to installing Skype on my prophet without any hassle

works great here too on the wizard

I installed the CAB file that dannyoneill posted. When trying call skype's test number I get "no common codec" and skype hangs up. Does anyone know what to do about it?
// lidholm

You cannot use skype once you have applied this fix to call users running skype on Linux. Which is what the test server runs.
Linux only supports the one codec and it happens to be the one thats causing trouble for us.
For most they dont actually know anyone who runs Linux so its not a problem, and even if they did they have a choice. Not working at all or working for windows users.

Thanks for the reply.
Am I able to use SkypeOut ?
// lidholm

you can, as far as I know its just skype on linux that has issues, skype out, in , chat, it all works.

What about calling users that have Skype for Mac OS X? do their skype support this codec?

i believe so, yes

codec issues
This version works great with my xv6700, howeverm I replaced skype 2.2 with this. Problem is, when I reinstall skype 2.2 after uninstalling this modified 2.0 version, I cannot call with skype 2.2! It would seem all the codecs are disabled. No skypeout, no windows users, no nothing. I have checked the registry and there is nothing listed under the disabled codecs. Skype 2.2 worked OK (but slowly) before I installed this package. Any suggestions?

Does Skype work on GPRS
Hi,
Unable to download the cab file off the ftp server and also there's no Low CPU version available on www.skype.com mentioned as such. Can you please upload the file as an attachment with your message.
Also, I have an unlimited data plan through GPRS with my service provider. I have read, not clearly though, that Skype would work only through a Wi-Fi connection. My questions are -
1. Is it true, that Skype works only with Wi-Fi Net connectivity
2. If yes, is there any tweak/modification to use it through GPRS connection
3. If no, is there any other VoIP software available for WM5 that connects through GPRS.
Thanks,
Umesh

Hi there,
I had the same problem with disabling the codecs. I installed the 2.2 and after setting DisableCodecs, any call would fail with an error message "Audio I/O error" (SkypeOut, too). Then I removed this registry setting, rebooted and the error persisted. It seems that skype stores this setting at a different position and doesn't change it back.
The solution to the problem is to manually navigate to the Skype folder, open config.xml and remove the codecs which should still be inside the <DisableCodecs>...</DisableCodes> tags.
However, I still haven't figured out what the problem with disabling the codecs is in the first place. I'm running WM5 on an O2 Neo. Any ideas greatly appreciated!
Chris

Thanks for your sharing!
I am going to give it a try!

A2DP and Audible

I'm using an Apache with the A2DP hacks and it works very well for everything except when listening to books using Audible. The sound only comes through on the left channel. Can anyone suggest a registry change that might fix this issue?
Dave
I had this same problem. While I didn't find a great solution, you can get sound out of both ears if you use the older 4.0 version of the software. Just choose Pocket PC 2000 as your device on the site, and you can download it. Worked great for me!

Thanks, I tried using v4.0 and it does work. The only problem is that I cannot get it to authenticate the player so I can't listen to anything but the Welcome blurb.
How did you get it to activate your player?
Dave
I had to load the old 3.6 desktop software to authenticate it. Select Win 98/ME for the OS on the download page and it will let you use it.
Once its authenticated, I just use AudibleAir (www.audible.com/audibleair). It downloads books and subscriptions everything via GPRS or WiFi. I've never needed to connect to the desktop since I authenticated.

When installing the desktop version, what device did you tell it you have?
I can't seem to get it to authenticate my mobile player.
BTW, I have reported this issue to their tech support. They claim to be unaware of the issue and immediately escalated it to their 3rd tier of tech support.
I have not been able to get it to activate mine either.....bummer. It would be so much easier if Audible would just make their current player compatible with Bluetooth.
Dave
I just spoke with Shawn (Tech Escalation Lead) at Audible.
They want to fix this problem and will try to duplicate it monday on a WM5 device. He is hoping they have a 8125 (or other Wizard) for the test.
I told it I had a Pocket PC 2000 device. I've done it several times (between upgrading roms, hard resets, etc) and I haven't had any issue. I did make sure the software was installed on the 8125 BEFORE I used the desktop software. It's not stable all the time, and sometimes it doesn't authenticate. Fortunately, I only need it to authenticate once.
That would be great if audible can fix this problem. The 4.0 software is kinda slow on the phone, and doesn't navigate quickly.

Skype on the Wizard

I'd like to get Skype working on the Wizard. I've tried searching but there doesn't seem to be a comprehensive guide.
I also just tried downloading from Skype.com for the pocketpc 312mhz version and it downloads and installs ok, however at the EULA stage the text doesn't all fit on screen so I am unable to accept the EULA and test it.
Can anyone give any hints and tips? Perhaps the I-Mate cab is available as apparently that may be optimised for the Wizard.
I have a Wizard with the new T Mobile UK firmware.
Many thanks for your help.
...did you install low cpu version (cab version or pc-windows executable). I installed it from...
http://www.freecabs.de/
program1 (new), you've got to search a little (great place, though, for other freeware).
...and i didn't had any EULA issues.
many thanks i'll give that a try
I've installed the low-cpu version and even with the wizard overclocked around 240 I find the voice quality not adequate enough.
...with overclocking you're able to use high cpu and therefor better quality. Also there are some threads around to improve mic & phone sounds...
I tried the low cpu beta install linked from the freecabs site, same issue, I get the eula and just see a t at the end and no yes / no / i agree to progress past this.
Anyone else have any ideas?
I'm assuming all of these require the use of skype, what other software is out there that lets you use VoiP on these phones? (We use VoiP at the office, but not Skype)
...i don't know any other VoIP software because at this moment there are 3 million skype users online, and i wanna stay in contact with them, so i didn't looked for any other. Or can other VoIP-servers connect with skype servers?...
i down loaded the low cpu cab and it sound real bad even with my qtek 9100 over clocked at 252 and using wifi

Trinity to slow for Skype?

I installed Skype 2.2 BETA for Windows Mobile the other day and don't seem to be able to get a connection with reasonable voice quality. It's clearly not related to insufficient speed of the data connection cos when I'm running Skype on my laptop (through the internet sharing functionality of the Trinity), I get a good-quality Skype connection.
I'm guessing that the Trinity processor is pushed to its limit during an active Skype session: the device is pretty much not responding to stylus taps / hardware buttons - at least not for quite a while...
Is anyone experiencing similar problems Any help appreciated!
Are you sure you have downloaded the correct file for Skype, cause for me it works very good with no sound issues and very very fast response....Maybe you are running other energy consuming programms that leave you with little memory for Skype.
The file should be the correct one. When no applications are running, I've got a bit more than 20Mb free program memory. I've uninstalled Skype for now so I can't check how much of that is left after launching Skype. The file storage was pretty low (~2.5Mb) though as I don't have a miniSD card yet. But I guess that shouldn't really be a problem...
Hi,
i run skype and it´s cool
few points to take care of:
close all other apps wen running skype, active sync running in the background i the death of performance ;-)
goto settings, memory, close running apps. (i´ve set trinity to shut down the apps with the "X" butten, so i can minimize it with the "close" butten)
next: how many contacts do U have in skype? they recomend to have less than 100 for good performance.
lack of mem is an general performance issue, read the thread "Memory Problems) in this forum,... SKtools made a mirical on my trinity
cheers

Hi Andi
I'm having real problems getting skype to run on my trinity(Orange SPVM700). I can only get it to run as a 'messenger' program, any time I try to make or receive a voice call it crashes. I'm seeing alot of talk about skype being blocked on the SPV and i'm beginning to wonder whether i'm going to need to make an upgrade to get it to work. Would you mind giving me details of the rom version you are running on your trinity. tia. If anyone else knows better I would be grateful for any advice. thanks
The last version of skype (2.2?) is not full compatible with trinity....
you can chat but you can't call with voice.
You will need the old beta skype version...

thanks for this
it works nice
just try fring
Gtalk, Skype, MSN , SIP all in one app
thanks jacare, i was having the same problem with skype crashing when trying to make calls but i'll give this beta a go.
_blackjack_: fring is useless if you only have wi-fi and don't want to pay extra for gprs access.

Oh,man!!!
This is just what I need, because I use Skype and voipcheap all the time and now I got all under the same app.I usually use Skype and SJphone, but since I got this one much better,I like it.
Thanks so much.
Thanks - Skype beta is working great on the Dopod.
One more thing, how do I do the following (if possible):
1. Have Skype calls go through the speaker phone
2. Records Skype calls (on PC, I use Pamela)
Skype 2.1
Here you are another version.Skype 2.1
Are you guys running Skype and wifi? The reason why I ask you this,is because some routers,AP´s and Wifi routers when it comes to p2p they get kind of stuck. Some P2P apps open multiple connections and don´t close them properly,so it also depends on the memory of the router ,it´s not just the P3600.
Sorry guys I´ve trying to upload it 8 times but it keeps popping up this message over and over:Upload of file failed.
Thanks a lot guys...
I had the same problem (could not find the old version)
Works perfect now... as one year ago

jacare,
Thanks for this.
Man, am I relieved !!! One of the main reasons why I decided to get a Pocket PC was to be able to use the Skype and SkypeOut while mobile (HSDPA and Hotspots or even my home WiFi)
I have a new P3600i arriving around 27 Sept and to be proactive went and downloaded the latest Skype mobile, and while doing so saw the notice that it was incompatible with the P3600 , which means it'll be incompatible with the P3600i.

I've downloaded this earlier version and will use it when the new device arrives.

Is skype going to release a working version>>?>

are they? i mean its time tog et a working version for the touch?
I have Trinity which skype does not support either.
However I was able to found one early beta of Skype which worked perfectly on my device. Here is the link ... test it ... I bet it will work.

Wow ... fring ... completely useless in my opinion.
What use do I have of something unable to use wifi ? (fring works only with GPRS/EDGE on my Trinity)

osavioro,
I have Dopod D810 running offical WM6 rom with Fring v3.20.23.118. It is working fine with Wifi. I wander why yours is not working.
I fring with google talk, msn, skype, they all work fine for me. The advantage of fring is that u do not have to install skype, messenger and other, just one application and one screen to work with multiple IM.
i know
yes search new version of skype at Google then i am sure you will get the latest versions information from there.

I'm wondering too why it does not work ... it is searching for connection and do not find one.
Fring works like a charm over wifi on my WM5 Wizard (fring version 3.20.23.118). It should enable wifi on your phone by itself, but maybe try enabling it yourself and make sure it connects to a access point before launching fring?
It's also worth mentioning that fring is much more CPU-efficient. With Skype, i can talk only after overclocking my wizard to something around 260MHz. When i make skype call trough fring, it uses only about 60% CPU time without overclocking (@195MHz). So it is really good software, especially on slower devices.

I've done all mentioned above and there was no effect.
I will wait for more stable and eye-candy version of fring.
However my 400 MHz Trinity does not fear skype
P.S. BTW there is another small application -- OctroTalk -- which support several IMs and even Google Talk (unfortunately Skype is not supported).
If there are enthusiastic people in this thread ... test it please ... you can find it here: http://www.octro.com.

SIP / VoIP on Jade

Hello everybody,
just got my brand new Touch 3G and am wondering if the VoIP-enabling CAB available here in these forums works on the Touch3G as well AND if it also breaks the GPS connection?
(see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299950&page=140 )
And which of the available WM6VoIP.CABs should I take? And is it using the internal speaker??
Anyone tried that already? I wonder if the SIP connection is good enough over HSDPA..
Thanks guys
arndt
http://www.nch.com.au/talk/index.html#download
Just installed it, but it uses the external speaker, as far as i have seen it....
voip
tried and even bought AGEphone software. it uses the internal speaker on jade and has much better quality than the windows mobile built-in SIP phone. really, WHY can't they just integrate a real sip phone in wm like e.g. all the nokia smartphones have..
download the trial here, for internal speaker go to settings and select "switch speaker"..

New FRING Version for Windows Mobile
I´ve installed the latest FRING version (1-1-2009) for WM and works really really well with good audio quality by EARPIECE in Touch 3G. Lots of improvements. Automatic roaming between WIFI and 3g is now also implemented in WM version.I´ve tested in Skype, MSN and VOIP (voipdiscount.com) and works *****.

Thats only for WM5 or .... because I get the following file Fring_WM5.exe ?
I installed fring just by going towards download button on the site and downloaded a cab file.
But that doesn't seem to work as the application don't want to load on my phone.
Seems there are a lot of version, you even can select a version on phone brand.
I am confused which version i'll should use.

I´ve downloaded FRING directly from my 3G (the .cab) and has installed without any problem. The audio is now better, works very vey well with sip, messenger and skype ands it´s FREE. Works with internal speaker. I´v tried agget.com , works also with internal speaker, very good voice quality but too many´s dropouts. I´ve tried al the parametres, buffers etc and no way to have stable comunications. FRING does the job and works in roaming betwwen WIFI and 3G, and also works with lots o PIM´s at the same time, personaly i use 3, and instead of having skype, msn and voip software charged in memory i use only one.For me it´s the best solution with the LATEST WM Fring version

First you have to uninstall FRING from your device then re-install it again on device memory NOT Storage Card.
