spv m5000 discontinued - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Orange business support tell me the 5000 has been discontinued. Initialy it was simply showing as out-of-stock (friday 4th, the day they agreed to give me one as an upgrade), but now they say it's discontinued.

I was trying to buy one in Orange last Friday, and they still sell them, but consider them obsolete, replaced by Hermes.
V

they told me that they have no stock and that none of the orange shops have stock, and that there would be no more deliveries to them... are you saying you know of an orange shop that does have stock?

Orange on Cheapside, London had them on Friday. They didn't seem to sugest that they were out. I'm going down there a little later today, so I'll try to ask if they have more. Otherwise, give them a call!
V

thanks...I realy want a 3g unit with a keyboard and a 1024*768 screen that fits in my pocket, and runs remote desktop. VGA will be tolerable, but qvga will be a challenge!

SimonPearse: I really want an 8 inch device that won't fit in my pocket, but it's not happening...
I spoke to the guy at Cheapside today, (Cheapskates, they told me I'd get £50 trade in, and gave me £10), and he said that he could find some Universals on the sales system around the country. You can try getting them to do a stock order for you.
The Universal is a nice system, but I wonder if HTC has backed out of that form factor, but replacing their only VGA device with the Hermes, as nice as it is, is quite a slap in the face for that technology.
FYI, I've been told that VJFullscreenTSC can be run with a virtual screen app to run Terminal Services/Remote Desktop at 1024x768 on the Universal.

I had a similar problem. The Orange call centre had offered me a discount for the phone. Then me they had just discontinued the M5000 and although I was aware of some being in stock in one or two of the shops, I was told that they couldn't arrange a discount with the shops because the shops were all franchises.
I arranged to disconnect, and then wrote a complaint to the executive office. A week later, I got a call from a nice lady saying she managed to track one down in a shop nearby. She said if I paid for it at the shop, then Orange would send me a refund for the agreed discount.
I received mine on Thursday. I like it a lot and the screen is amazingly clear. However, it can be very slow and impossible to use without a memory card and a bit of tweaking. These boards will tell you most of what you need to know.
That might be why they've been trying to rid of it. Also, they are heavily promoting their new SPV M3100, which has just as good specs, except that it is smaller and not a clamshell, so may not meet your requirements.
Having said that, after I did the tweaking and installed a 1gb memory card (just over a tenner if you shop around on the net: got mine from 7dayshop.com) it works a treat! I have fallen totally in love with it. I previously had an M2000.
If I were you, I would suggest to Orange that, since they had agreed to give it to you on an upgrade, they do the same thing with you as they did with me (as long as you can spare cash in you account until they refund you whatever discount you asked for).
You will have to go to the store and collect it. I do know of a store in Kent that had some on Thursday. PM me if you want to know where, or if there is any more help I can be.
Hope you are able to track one down.

bye bye tytn

i agree 100%
i am on my second one and just cant stand the bugs
i am thinking of getting the artemis....the one with the GPS
i love the little ball thing it's just amazing.....
just dont know..
i am definately gona miss the keyboard on the tytn
nut anyway no point in looking back anymore
You'll be sorry
I had a Nokia E61 before the tytn. In fact I had three (replaced under warranty). Whilst Tytn has it's problems, the architecure is open and great forums like this one assist you in overcoming the problems. By contrast the Nokia software has it's bugs too (lot's). The problem is that the architecture is closed and you are totally at the mercy of Nokia who provide terrible service. In the 4 months I owned the E61 I only had it in my poossession for 1.5 months. The rest of the time it was at Nokia.
In the end I took it up with the carrier and had them give me a tytn as a replacement. To rub salt into the wound after the carrier had supplied the TYTN, Nokia called to say do you have a problem? gee we are sorry, perhaps we should have upgraded the level of your problem yada yada yada
Two of the happiest days I had last year was the day I received my new Nokia and the day I got rid of it.
if anyone wants to donate their tytn or sell it really really cheap let me know
I am open to offers...i've got the t-mobile variant...pm me
for what it's worth, I had to get 3 replacements for my orange uk m3100 in the 1st month but since I got this last one a couple of months ago, it works like a dream, i love it to bits. If at first you don't succeed . . . !
Hi there,
I have an HTC644 now (Vario II) which i got after replacing an HTC645 (touchscreen stopped responding after a while) and to be honest with you...
thats the best device I ever had, it works just fine for me. That includes every single option in the phone ( yay i'm not using outlook )
Of course it is not perfect (it could include some more "phone'ish" features), yet that's what this forum is about!
Too many people come around wining about their problems, and some people take their issues as a device review ...
If everyone in the world had a device like that - there would be no wars ! HOOAH!
I'm not gonna waste my time and wait for two weeks til i can get a 4th one. imagine having to deal with this mess everytime you use it...

its meant to be my inbox, but the screens sorta split in half, and the lowhalf isnt getting rid of messages/warnings/menus that have previously been up
theres no denying the tytn is a smashing phone, coz it is. Just that i cant take it anymore. each handset takes at least 10days to get repaired or replaced. I've been without it for a month in total. i'm not paying good money for a phone i hardly see and keeps letting me down when i do see it.
I've not had a series 60 before. but the nokias ive have had before have been reliable. I'm prepared to give it ago, cant be worse than the problems im having, where the screens no use, therefore making the phone irritating to use. at least with the nokia the screen isnt touch sensitive, so less likely to go crazy on me.
three strikes and youre out.

Can someone explain this? Fake/ Knock off G1?

Hi everyone, I am new to the t mobile community and I was looking on good ol ebay for a G1 without a contract. At that point my search threw back this in the query. I was quick to call b.s and all that so ofcourse i didn't buy it, but I just want to ask you all what in the hell is this. Has anyone out there bought it or had any experience with this?

Just some cheap "iClone" phones from China. Check your local craigslist- people cant seem to get rid of them fast enough once they get duped into buying them
Alright, In the first link the bid has ended so i cannot help you there. NOW In the second, It's a piece of hardware that may be fake, For Example, My cousin bought a phone like that about 2 months back from ofcourse good ol' Ebay, And what was it, A Japanese phone that looked just like the Iphone, It streamed TV had an antenna for when we made the switch on cable and antennas would be dead. It had like an 8 megapixel camera, Beautiful sweet deal for a smackin' $200 bucks. SO he went ahead and bought it. When it arrived it was the phone, or more exact the model, Which weight no more than a stack of papers, It didnt turn on, NOTHING. He decided to use a flathead screw driver to open it up, and what he found was that the phone had nothing inside, Literally, Nothing but sand, To make the phone weigh. So from me to you. Don't buy it. Skip it. Go to T-mobile and get the G1. lol But that was just 1 experience never know.
damn what a shame. Hopefully the people who are winning these ebay auctions don't get a box of sand shipped to them as well. I just did some reseach on meizu, they seem to be the company that is producing this stuff. Maybe its good enough for china, but I sure as hell am not taking a chance with it.
Those phones are real (not sure about the eBay one, but Deal Extreme and others sell the iClones) but they are very low quality. They also sell a ton of Nokia clones.

Those phone don't even look like the G1. DA.
Lol... that second one has got SIX speakers!! Must be goood... hehe
Haha
I bought one of these a couple mounths ago they are useless without the stylus and no where near as good as any phone made recently but if all you got is 150 and u need it unlocked then this pos is for you lol...
Edit: this thing does internet movies music and my favorite was the web cam mine had it does a few things but it doesn't do any all that good
These phones do have uses. A lot of these Chinese knock-offs are bought by people needing unlocked phones and multi-SIM capability. In Europe, for example, there are many more carriers over much shorter distances than in the US. Also, the practice (law?) there is caller-pays-all. Incoming calls don't cost anything. Outgoing calls cost your rate plus the rate of the person you're calling, making having multiple SIM cards for different countries more economical. Many of these phones have gimmick features like TV reception, but all come with clunky, proprietary operating systems. Finding good, useful applications will be a constant source of frustration for someone looking for a way to complement his 10mm CZ "diamond" stud in his ear.

HD2-hardware-buttons losing laquer and looking crappy - known problem?

Hey guys,
Since a couple of weeks I kept an eye on the HW-keys of my HD2. The laquer on them is vanishing more and more - it looks really crappy and somehow like it was an ugly full-plastique Nokia-phone...
Here some pics (quality isn't too good because the angle is quite tough):

Has anybody had a problem like this before and if so have you contacted HTC about this?
I'm definitely planning to notify HTC about that and want them to replace these HW-keys on warranty... I cannot accept this on a 600€ phone after 6 months...
My aunt has bought the HD2 recently and I realised that HTC obviously has already brought a new version of HW-buttons (also with phone-button clearly green and the off-button red - which I don't really like much).
Cheers!
Mine are also slowly coming off, but it isn't as 'present' as on yours. I barely use them buttons, but I think with my future switch to Android, they will indeed come off too..
I'm also interested in knowing whether HTC will be liable for this.

No, it's a German Vodafone-device (my aunts one).
Now I contacted HTC telefonically and I have to say: I never heard such a piece of rubbish from any mobile-manufacturer.
"Jenny" told me, that this is a "blamish" (in German "Schönheitsfehler") and I have to live with that, but I'm free to pay for a replacement - it is not a warranty-issue...
Sorry HTC, but if these are your last words, I'm gonna kick my HD2 to ebay and will NEVER buy a HTC-device anymore.
all i have done is scrap it off with my nail job done looks fine now no marks or nothing
That's because of misuse!!
You could protect your phone by placing it in a leather pouch, looks elegant, has the htc mark on it and cheap from ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-PO-S510-HTC...037509?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2a09436285
I've been using it for a while now and the phone is still brand new

HA HA
Sorry, but I NEVER "misuse" my phones or any electronic devices. I took and take care of my HD2 like it was made of 24 carat gold. And I of course carried my HD2 ALWAYS in a leather case that definitely does not scratch the hardware keys (checked it of course). I even didn't use the HW-keys at all for some time.
Everything I can say is, that I'm VERY dissapointed about HTC's customer care. I mean, the HW-keys are the only part of HD2 that is not made of better material than plastics - and I haven't ANY other signs of ANY usage at ANY part of the phone apart of these HW-keys (photos looking worse than it really is because of the flashlight of my digicam). I paid € 600,- for the phone and I definitely won't accept this barefaced answer from HTC.
the keys are covered and it feels cos of the edges and once it chips it continues all over they shouldn't have done them.
they should have just left them as they are

Dodgy Dealings

Hi Guys
Just wanted to alert you to a person on XDA that sold me a dud deal and to let people know not to purchase from this bloke.

yeah that is pretty average mate... i would be chasing it myself... but then i know quite a few shonky people in the states thru my gym history....
Wonder how he can live with himself, ripping off someone in the android community like that and still show his face around here!
cmon now, you were getting 2 new HD2s for $480...if its too good too be true, well ill let you finish the rest.
I also inquired about buying an hd2 from eosrider. We had a few pm's back and forth but I never bought from him. He asked 225 for one hd2.
In one PM eosrider writes:
"I am located in Santa Rosa, California. I purchased these phones from a wholesale distributer in California. These phones do not include the fancy box that you would get from T-mobile. What you get is the phone shipped to you in a standard shipping box. It includes the device minus the micro sd card, and USB charging cable.
At this point I am trying to start a cell phone sales company. I am going about it the cheapest way possible. I realize that people may have lots of questions with a sales situation like this. However, I will also say that the paypal that I use to accept payments for this 'business' is also the same that I use for a server rental company, ebay, Magic the Gathering Online, and other misc business. I have no intention of making a quick buck on vapor ware or anything less than legitimate."
He also included a phone number in one PM. I could give you the # via PM if it helps you contact him to resolve your issue.

A500 LCD screen cracked, everything else is fine.

Bought this about 10 days ago. Its been in its case since i brought it home. Hasn't left the house and it sits on my computer desk when I'm not using it. I live alone so no one else could have touched it. I haven't dropped it, sat on it, or used it as a frisbee.
I went to turn it on to show a friend and I found my screen like this:

The digitizer itself is fine. Touch screen works perfect and I can still do everything. No scratches on the body, no signs of anything on the case. Any idea what could cause this? I find it weird this would happen. Of course it has to be the most expensive part of the tablet.
Could I try taking it back to Best Buy and see if I can get it exchanged? Try doing a warranty claim through Acer? Or am I SOL and have to buy a new one? I'd replace the LCD myself but I did not find any replacement screens available yet.
I'm thinking somehow I may have flexed it a little bit, dont know how but I read that being a possibility. I didnt buy any accidental coverage through Best Buy. But I can still do Squaretrade, but would need to wait 30 days before I could file a claim.
If you paid with cc check with your cc company most good cards especially amex cover 90 days of theft damage. I buy all my electronics with my amex because of 90 day accidental damage and theft protection and they double manufacturers warranty up to a year. Very easy to file a claim much easier than my mastercard. Good luck.
Should have said I paid with my banks Visa Debit Card
That sucks
I dropped my Iconia down the stairs 2 months ago and almost crapped myself. It went in movie like slow motion. I bought the device from amazon and had only had it 3 days at the time. I told the guy what happened and have a great buying track record with amazon and they returned it and shipped out a new one as soon as they got posetion. Sorry for your trouble. The only thing I can say is try to find a new screen or "bricked" device on ebay. I grabbed one for my wife for $210.00 on ebay and all I had to do was recover the device.
Good luck

Go back to Best Buy. Leave the tablet at home.
Find the rep who sold it to you. Tell him your wife/husband/etc though it would be a good idea to get the BB insurance because you have kids/dog/nephews/etc in the house.
The rep gets perks for selling those insurance plans. He/she should be more than willing to ring one up for you since you're within 14 days. Should cost you about $100.
Then, magically, bring it back to the Geek Squad a few days later and have it sent for repairs. Most likely, like mine, they'll call you and let you come by and pick up a new one.
Thanks for the suggestion, I work with 4 people who used to work at Best Buy and they said all the managers in my area are experienced 5+ years and would want to see the device before they would do it
Looks like I'll be buying SquareTrade and wait til mid-October before I file a claim.
