So the case is... I just need to have working Qtek 1010 with SOME additional soft on it inside a ROM...
I've read many pages in this forum and I'm able to find too many ways to change my ROM. I'm totaly confused.
I work for extremaly big worldwide company and they gave me q Qtek, told me to use it, gave me one simple application and web link... so I do.
But the Qtek is much powerfull than that so I need to flash my ROM.
Now comes a question: where can I find one document how to prepare for it, what tools do I need, how to do it... I know after some tries I will be confident enough to do such stuff easlily, my problem is I have only one try, they will make me w trouble if I screw my company recource.
I understand you had milion similar questions like that. Basicly I need help how to flash so I can be sure 100% not less that I can recover in case of trouble. I hope you understand I'm afraid to do it because lack of experience and you are able to tell me if I should try to flash...
or maybe it's better for me to ask my boss to by me a 512 MB SD and install all additional soft on it and stop worring about memory?

Get an sd card, backup existing rom to sd card, very easy to do by bootloader method. Enter bootloader by holding down power while inserting stylus in the reset hole on the bottom left of pda then press top right function key, then choose ce to sd. Once you have done this you can check if it has in fact backed up your rom by putting sd card in the pda, enter bootloader, it will then give the option to program the rom, just remove the card and push the reset with stylus again, the other method to check a working backup is to put the sd card in the pda, the pda will ask to format it, say no and remove it. Once you have a backup you can either use xdatools to copy it to your pc or keep it in a safe place, no more files must be written to this card otherwise it will be rendered useless, if you wish to reuse the card sometime it will need formatting. Once you have your backup, go to www.yorch.net, cook yourself a rom and download it in the exe format, this will do a normal install from your pc while connected to pda via activesync, if it messes up you always have your backup. Once you become more proficient at using xdatools you might wish to try out lots of different roms until you are happy with the result, you can go on to sd card flashing which is a much better way of programming rom and much less prone to error because it doesnt rely on a pc connection. I would advise you to leave the radio stack alone, if you can make and receive call ok leave it alone. Have a thorough look around the forum before proceeding. Its good fun to program your pda and you can make it a much better tool, but make sure you always have a way out if things go wrong.

1) Can't find the www.yorch.net website where I could "cook myself a rom and dowload it in a .exe format"
2)It's still not very clear to me what exactly cooking a ROM means: it concerns the OS (the version 1.53, 1.72 type of stuff), the extended ROM (the default programs u get starting after and hard reset like the SW for the camera etc) or both?

I'm in the same boat as you CChris. I've been diligently a daily searching through the numerous topics on this site looking for similar information. I haven't found it yet - or at least nothing not-to-super-technical. I do know that you get to the bootloader by pressing the power button, reset button, and down on the toggle at the same time rather than the Wallaby way of the power and reset buttons only. It also seems that there are issues regarding 'country' and that it requires software to get around this. I haven't found the software yet - the links that I've seen all point to "itsme's" website which is currently down.

Hopefully, someone with a lot more knowledge than me can go over updating the XDA II as clearly as cruisin-thru did for the XDA I.
The instructions on http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/HimalayaRomFlashing are correct.
Unfortunately, there was an issue where the wiki removed the ~ from itsme's website's address. It's been replaced with %7e and now the link works.
If you download a ROM from the same vendor as your device (e.g. Qtek ROM on Qtek device, iMate ROM on iMate device, etc.) you don't need to use these instructions, you can just install the ROM upgrade from your vendor.
If you want to use the latest ROM (from iMate) and your device isn't an iMate, you need to decrypt, change the "country" code, encrypt, and then run the upgrade.
You can also edit the extended ROM when flashing, but it's easier to use itsme's extRom Tools. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=8422
You do NOT need to flash the ROM if you are not experiencing problems, or if you are experiencing problems which the new ROM also has (for example ugly cleartype fonts, which may be fixed without flashing). Flashing the ROM may void your warrantee. You will lose all your data when you upgrade, and you should not restore a backup, only your my documents folder.
If you are a newbie, it may be best not to flash your ROM. If you typed in itsme in google, you would have found his xs4all address as the third link, and would have quickly found out his site wasn't down at all, but the link was just wrong.
Just a warning: the things that could go wrong when flashing are potentially much worse than a wrong URL, and the answer to those problems won't be the third link in google.

Hi all,
I've had my S100 for a week now. It came with ROM ver 1.06 (I think) and right on the 1st day I upgraded to 1.11 and finally decided to apply Anansky's Big Storage ROM. All work perfectly even with my Jabra BT800. I've been trying many different 3rd party software. As usual, after installing and deinstalling, my unit became unstable and therefore would like to start from scratch.
In XDA's ftp site there is a Qtek 1.11 Ext ROM zip file. At first I installed all, but I think I could do away with some. Based on the filenames, some are self explanatory but I don't know which ones I can do without. Could someone be kind enough to explain?

If you have the Anansky ROM installed I don't think you will have the option to install the extended ROM when you do a hard reset, mine doesn't. You have to install the extended ROM seperately. You should have made a backup of your extended ROM before doing the Anansky hack. If you don't have it, maybe you can download it from the XDA ftp site. Remember only install .cab files, don't execute the autorun or you may wipe out your big storage. Even if you install all of the Ext. ROM files, they don't take up much space in the storage area (maybe 1.5 or 2 meg.) depending on your Ext. ROM.

The Qtek 1.11 ExtROM found in this forum's FTP site has 9 CAB files. Some of them like the Caller ID is self explanatory, meaning this must definitely be installed if Caller ID is one of the functions one needs.
I finally found a method for backing up and modifying the Extended ROM on an XDA2i device.

Before you ask, yes the cab files do self-extract successfully if tried manually (i.e. outside of the reset process).
If anyone has any ideas why some cab files work and others do not, please let me know.
I played with the information in the article yesterday.. Some information in the article is incorrect. They state the ext. rom is 24 MB but when following the steps on the website this is incorrect !
Sure, extra drive reports a 24 MB drive but the what's backuped to the SD card doesn't include the whole 24 MB the ext. rom supposedly has !
What I'm typing below is more guess work than knowledge.
"d2s 80000000 3BF0000" probably means "dump to SD card" for a total length of 80000000 hex starting at 3BF0000 hex.
80000000 hex is 2147483648 in decimal. These aren't the amount in bytes that are copied.. I to honest it I have no real idea in what it are but when dividing it by 1024^2/100 you get 20,48. The / 100 is something I made up since that gives me about the amount in MBs I can put in the ext. ROM without having corrupted files. I don't want to experiment with larger values since I haven't studied the tools that are used in the article enough yet.
In short, be sure not to put more than say 20 MB in the ext. ROM and most likely your problems are solved. I personally put an executable sprite backup file in the ext ROM, packaged it in a way it will be copied to storage and run from there. It's the most effective way I could think of to fill an extended ROM. Simply with a fully installed but clean backup of the pocket pc.
Anyhow, that's it for now.
I considered it being a problem with size and reduced the amount of data in the Extended ROM by a huge amount (deleted several of the cab files that I did not need).
This reduced it down to around 13Mb for what it's worth.
All of the files installed to the ROM ok, but when the process which reads the Config.txt file reached the parts regarding two of the cabs I wanted to install, the files failed to self-extract without giving any feedback.
Several other cab files I wanted to install worked fine.
What all this means is that the problem (probably) lies somewhere other than the size of the Extended ROM.

Total backup size is 3BF0000 (hex)
So extended rom size is 3BF0000-2700000 = 14F0000 (hex) or 21,954,560 (dec)
So extended rom size shall not be over than 21,954,560 in total space.

So backup range shall be 3F00000. (size = 66060288 (dec) which you can not use 64mb card, you have to use 128mb card to backup)

Just a quick note on the sizes you gave above:
83,f00,000 - 82,700,000 = 1,800,000 (hex)
= 25,165,824 (dec) (24Mb) for the extended rom.
83,f00,000 - 80,000,000
= 3,f00,000 (hex) = 63Mb for the whole rom
The document given at the site uses:
80,000,000 to 83,bf0,000 which may miss some of the extended ROM, which may explain my problem.
I will try using the numbers from wiki and see if it works.

i just want to ask......by cooking Ext Rom....how much free space that can be use after that???? does it effect any upgrade in the future????
The Extended ROM is an area that you cannot normally write to and is not considered part of the memory (as far as I am aware) under Settings/Memory.
By cooking the ROM you can alter what applications get installed when the device is hard reset. The installed applications will take up their normal memory allocation so in that respect it will reduce the amount of memory available to further applications.
It is possible to increase the amount of memory available by cooking the ROM as there may be elements of the Extended ROM that came with the device that you do not actually want installed. This is done either by removing the relevant cab file completely or by removing the relevant entry from the Config.txt file (both should be done, but one or the other will have the same effect).

I'm keen to follow your tips and do some work in the kitchen.
I have downloaded all the relevant articles from the link provided so thankyou for that.
However i'm reluctant to take the first step with the thought of a unrecoverable disaster on my hands. MY NEW XDA2i!! So before i get started i thought i would consult the experts for any tips and traps for young players.
I've bought myself a large enough quality SD card to dump to.
I guess the aim of the exercise is to a remove unwanted programs and install some of the cool features of Special Edition ROM 1.2 including that really excellent anti theft tool.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, with what to remove/ install and how thanks in advance.

First tip, use the process to back up the ROM of the device and keep it very safe.
Since all you will be playing with is the Extended ROM (and not messing with the OS Rom or Radio Rom) the good news is that if you removed all of the files from the Extended Rom you would still be able to boot the device. This gives you an opportunity to remove files to see what they install. If it goes really wrong, you can restore the Extended Rom from the SD card backup.
The XDA2i device does have a lot of room on it for additional items so you can add in extra Cab files or Exe files if you wish. You need to modify the Config.txt file to make the Extended Rom run these extras.
As for which files do what, there is a lot of info available around this site and others and I am afraid I do not have time to go into it at the moment.
I will see if I get some time over the next few days, but work is a little hectic at the moment.

Soft Reset in the Config.txt File
The last bit I'm going to mention here is that the last item in the Config.txt file soft resets the device. If you remove this item for some reason then adding the line "RST: Reset" on the end of the Config.txt file will soft reset the device automatically for you.

Xp is throwing a 16bit error my way, so i will have to resolve that before i can go any further.
Are you suggesting that when i re-build extended ROM to include "RST:Reset" on the last line in config.txt?

With regards to the RST: Reset command, it is sometimes useful to soft reset the device at the end of the configuration.
This is because some of the Cab files will probably modify the registry and most of these changes will not be picked up until the device is soft reset (the device is still usable, just not using the changes).
Most of the builds that you may come across already do this as a last step in one of their Executables so they do not always include the reset line in the config file. Adding this line to the end will ensure that a soft reset always happens so that registry changes will be used.
Be warned, soft resetting the device will halt the configuration build at that point, so anything after the reset command will never happen.

Finally sorted 16 bit issues with the PC. Have loaded SPLIT ROM and created the 3 components. Particularly ext.img
I have also created the virtual drive "X" with "ext.img"
File\properties tells me this is a 24MB file. All good until i wish to open. PC asks if i wish to format disk, i'm not able to read contents any ideas.

I thought i would try downloading the cooked rom off en.pdamobiz.com as a test. The extended rom opened up perfectly in virtual drive creator. Mine however is an exact match size wise but wont open.

I guess the next step is work out what i need and dont need in extended ROM. Assuming i can get past this stage.

I'd like to modify my german extROM too but I have a little problem: when I'm starting the ntrw.exe (it lay in the basement of my HDD, in C:\) it closes itself!
So I mean, I can't use the ntrw.exe from the PDA-Miz guide to write the ROM-image to my HDD!

how do i get to the extended rom directory? i have a t-mobile mda and have total commander (reg editor) installed. I can't find the /extended rom/ directory and also don't really understand what is or what it is there for. i know this might sound like a remedial question to HTC Wizard experts, but if someone could help me I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, if it matters, I'm running xelecin's custom 2.26 ROM.

You won't see it by browsing.. just type in "/extended_rom" and TC will open it. Don't forget the underscore (_) character..

Use the advanced search feature (under the search option tab) to look within the wizard updating forum for the term "extended rom", and you can start to understand how some of the rom developers utilize it (There are 12 pages of entries). These guys are the real 'wizards' - I could not begin to explain the way they do (I'm too new myself).
Your extended ROM contains all of your customizations. If it is a stock ROM it will have all of your carrier customizations. If you have a cooked Ext ROM it could have lots of things. One of the benefits is that if you have to completely clear out the storage it would re-install all the customizations that were in the ext rom.

so, in simple terms, if you were doing a hard reset (or clear storage in settings), the extended rom directory retains the files, and installs them if they are .cab files.. am I getting warm? Thanks for the info.
you got it. The carriers put it there so that one wouldn't have to call into tech support if you had to do a hard reset.
ok. i get this now. just a couple more questions..
-Do the .CAB files have to be in the main directory (/extended_rom/) or can they be in any subfolder?
-I was reading somewhere that it's a read-only directory.. is there a way to delete files, if so, can you delete the files one at a time or all once?
-finally, can you access the directory from active sync?

As far as I know it is unable to be accessed through Active sync. And yes you can delete them off one by one. I would reccomend reading up on it. Faria has produced a wondrful guide on how to cook your extended ROM. When you delete a cab you also have to change the config settings in the notepad file. I have dabbled a little but Faria's guide will help you more.
!!!WARNING!!! if you delete the files from your ext rom and do a hard reset none of the carrier customizations will be installed.. furthermore.. you will not gain any extra space by deleting the cabs, it is a read only partition.. also with that being said, if you try to delete a file from there or add one you take a great risk of corrupting the ext rom and you will be forced to reflash the rom in order to get them back.
just one more question.. I have xelecin's 2.26 custom rom on my MDA. I'm thinking of switching over to either molski's or faria's latest rom. when i flash those roms, the extended rom from the current rom i'm using gets replaced with the custom rom's extended rom, right? does that make sense? Thanks for putting up with my dumb questions and actually answering them! Oh yeah, when i installed the rom i'm using now it did a CID unlock before flashing, so i assume my phone is still unlocked, right?

Extended Rom Contents
I only install a portion of the T-Mobile customization, which I accomplish by preventing the install of the extended rom. I have copied onto my miniSD the files I want to install, and then I just manually run the cabs from there. (Actually, that would erase them, so I copy them first.)
Then you can experiment with other ROMs, still getting the customizations that you need. Here is my thread on this topic:

I no longer install MP-Shorcut-MMS1-Voice-CV-TMUS-060404.CAB because that just adds MMS to the Messaging app and a shortcut for making voice tags and I don't use MMS.
By the way, it is really useful to install things like Total Commander, Memmaid, weather programs, RSS readers, Zagat, and so on to the miniSD, because then they don't need to be reinstalled after a hard reset. The only thing I have to do is add the shortcuts back, because shortcuts are erased after a hard reset. These programs will no longer auto-update, since nothing can run automatically from the miniSD, but with memmaid you can create automatic updates if you like.
Your backup program should always run from main memory! Also, programs that affect the today screen should also be run from main memory for increased speed. Pretty much everything else can go on the miniSD.

I was trying to get HTC Home Weather working thru T-Mobile UK using v1.5HTCHomeproxy0409.cab (without success), so went into the registry using Total Commander to check the Proxy settings.
Unfortunately I got as far as \\\Registry\HKLM and was trying to double click the "Software" folder but instead it went into edit folder name mode and whilst distracted by the wife managed to change the folder name to "n"
Whatever I try, I can't rename it "Software". I've tried creating a new "Software" folder and copying the files across, but a few won't copy:
/Apps/Shared/ "\Windows\mscoree.dll" and
/Apps/Shared/ "\Windows\Intellipad.dll" and
plus some .NET Compact Framework files in /Microsoft/ folder - but I'm guessing these are something the prev user had and wont affect the normal functions / programmes I will use
so... is there any way I can put the files I moved from
\\\Registry\HKLM\Software back, do I need to etc ????

Its a (recently bought off eBay) , ex T Mob (UK I think) unbranded with HTC home etc. Can't work out how to see what version of HTCHome was on, but guess I've written over it with the proxy.cab now - the icons have changes and have lost today screen battery indicator, but that's a problem for another day!

Well, if it wont change back, you can always hard reset or reflash to a new ROM...and if you do the later, all of the prerequisites have been done for you, you have HardSPL allplied already, and the correct radio ROM version for most of the ROMs, so you can flash away!

As you've probably noted from my profile and foolish behaviour, I'm new to this, does anyone mind just explaining the above comments on the ROM flash for me please?

If I can't find a way to rename the registry file, I'll have to go for a hard reboot, ROM flashing will be my next project once I feel I've done enough reading to understand what I'm doing and what not to do!

In order:
1-Prerequisites)-You have got HardSPL flashed succesfully to your device which leads to;
2-HardSPL)-Since you have a G4 device, in order to flash a non-carrier ROM you have to have HardSPL applied to your device, and you can tell that yours has been done by your IPL and SPL. Your IPL or 2.21.0001 indicates that you have a G4 Wizard, and your SPL or 2.21.Olip means that you have HardSPL applied already, otherwise you would have had to do it in order to be able to flash any ROMs...which leads to;
3-Radio)-What I mean by correct radio for most of the ROMs is that 2.71.11 is regarded as one of the more stable radio ROMs out there, and together with version 2.19.X, they are the preferred versions, though any version will work with any ROM, some work better than others.

Yes it does, thanks - especially now it has prompted me to read the wiki on hardSPL.
So maybe flashing a new ROM is not too far away...
Does the ROM contain the Windows operating system, in which case can I upgrade to WM6 / 6.1 (version currently says WM5) on my device, will I find a selection with info on what's in them on the downloads pages? (can't get access right now for some reason)

I just did this today with my Touch Pro, it's alarmingly easy to break your device like this.
I think I have it fixed ... after I made the mistaken renaming, the device had locked up (or grown very slow) so I soft reset it. That rebuilt a large portion of the Software folder. After that, I copied the remaining keys in the renamed folder to clipboard and overwrote whatever was in the new Software folder.
Phone seems to be back to normal, but I'll be on the lookout for anything that didn't quite work. If that's the case I may have to hard reset.
@burnsy, yes, most of the download pages contain what the ROMs have in them, but I would look at my review thread in the Wizard Mobile 6 section...its called ROM Features......such such such, its got a list and ratings of the ROMs that you may find interesting.

Dr G, seems you're getting on a bit better than I am - my device won't let me copy all the files into the new folder. Noticed that I can receive but no longer send email, even after deleting and reinstalling my account, but that could equally have been caused by the htc home proxy files I was playing with!
I feel a hard reset coming on...
