I've had my O2 Exec since Feb this year and its fab. Way better than the mobile messenger iPAQs that I had previously.
One thing that is bugging me though is the poor performance of the GPRS/UMTS connection I get - regardless of where I am at the time.
Say I open Opera (but not limited to) and request a website. It initially loads some of the page and then the GPRS connection drops and then says there's a problem with the modem message. If I then refresh the request for the page it connects and loads a bit more.... This happens with IE on the phone too.
I thought this 3G network thing was supposed to be way better than previous offerings... doesn't seem like it to me.
hi, I am havin simillar problem with GPRS speed.I'm using mda pro and the gprs is really slow. when trying to load a website it takes ages and happens not to load at all. once the desired website is loaded then the navigation within the website and speed is good. I think is a mda pro (universal issue) cos I have just upgraded from mda vario (htc wixard) and I must admit the wizard gprs performance is way batter. is there any way to speed up the uni and gprs problem.
cheers, cudo
could be dependent on signal and the quality of the service... i've never had such problems on mine. 3G works well especially when downloading emails
Yes I am another one with this issue and it has followed me with 4 units so I now know it is a Universal problem. I have just upgraded to a TyTN last week and used all my sim cards, Vodaphone, o2 and Tmobile and they all make the Universal look like a dialup.
but I wonder why is it working this way thtat onced a website is loaded and I navigate within this website then the speed is ok but when I try to load different address I have low speed again? will changing the rom help?

strange, mine is ok (using opera 8.6), maybe you could try a rom upgrade yes, i have 1.30.77.
hmm what speed are you talking about? umts speed or device responsiveness? this sounds like you mean the latter...?

Sounds like a problem with dns. No idea what you could do to improve that.
Can anyone recommend a better ROM as opposed to the O2 one?
The issue for me is constant disconnections, not the speed.
I also have the problem of poor UMTS speed on T-Mobile. In fact GPRS is quicker.
Would a more generic rom such as Qtek or Imate work better or is it the hardware that is rubbish ?
Thanks

i have the newest qtek rom on mine and i easily get 300 kbps on umts. much better than gprs, and is stable. it is definitely not the universal hardware in general if you have a problem. you could try this rom.

The odd thing about it is that it was fine until about 2 weeks ago but I think I will give the another rom a try and hope the speed increases.

I have contacted T-Mobile and they said they would check to see if there is a problem at their end. I guess I will wait for their answer before I do any rom changes.
hi I got this problem with slow internet until today..I got now idea of weather it is a coincidence or not but it works. I bought pocket mechanic pro 2.13 and cleaned all the reg stuff, deleted broken shortcuts , fixed dead areas and so on and on..and after that the gprs and umts works like a charm...I'm happy now.

I read the official specs of the Qtek S200, and they suggest it supports 802.11b/g. BUT, ALL the Qtek s200's available here in the czech republic, list their specs as 802.11b ONLY.
Is this possible? Is it a hardware issue, or is there perhaps a way to activate G through a tweak somewhere?
G Wifi Activation.
In attached file, you can find a tweak for making available G Wifi in 9100.
I have a S200 with G Wifi already activated, so I can't tell if it works.
Use at your own risk, but 9100 users say it's perfect.
You have to copy .cab file to your S200 memory, and click on it for install.
Thanks Mondelman
Anyone already tried this out on a Qtek S200?
still wondering
I'm still puzzled whether this is a hardware issue, or a software one? I can't test it on a device. It maybe will make a difference in the use of skype or streaming media, if its limited to B standard.
I cannot understand how could qtek make a g-less model for czech republic.
I have not much experience on the subject (newbie really) but I think I have the same issue (S200 with Dutch OS). Bought the phone in NL and it came with the Dutch OS I took a better look at the box once I got home to see the specs ... 802.11b if you loko on line specs they do mention "g"
I hope that a patch will be available as for the 9100.
btw this was my first posting so Hello to all (great stuff!!)
Makis, have you tried the above patch? Does it work?
I have seen my Prophet connecting at 24mb. Since 802.11b is maximum 11mb, I assume that G is working on the Prophet out of the box. That being said, my laptop connects at 54mb. I'm not complaining because the wifi on my Prophet has done everything that I have asked it to do including VOIP

Yep I've had a similar experience. Got my s200 and on the box it only mentions 802.11b in it's specs. However, I have locked my router so it only transmits 802.11g and my s200 can still access the network ... so the s200 MUST be capable of using 802.11g. I have also noticed an increase in speed accross the network to my s200 allowing me to stream video without buffering that I could before (when I have my router locked on 802.11b). While it's not blistering fast, it is still quicker, so as Matterhorn says it's probably got a max of 24mb rather than 54mb, but hey that's still miles better than 11mb.
I did not try the patch my self I know someone who have though. I ll post again about this tomorrow.
:?
krale as qdabean mentioned above I just tried the same thing -router only on g
Result: still able to access the net from the my s200!! So who needs a patch
qdabean, it is strange though cause I got a reply recently from qtek specifying that router should transmit on bouth b&g in order to get good results... Then again it was the saem person that told me changing the language on the s200 is not possible and the only solution was to return it to the dealer and ask for another version
but who cares "g" works case closed.
Thanks guys
Hi All,
A few weeks ago I downloaded a small brilliant and useful programme off the net for my XDA2s used for discovering wifi sites in different towns.
I was able to tap in the town In the UK and it would come back and tell me the local sites available (not neccessaraly to connect me) .It appeared many of the towns in the UK were covered.
For the life of me I cannot remember the name of the software and I inadvertantly discarded it....but now wanting to put it back on my XDA2s.
Can any of you knowledgeable guys help me out with the name of the pprogramme I wonder ?...........and of course where I download from ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Kind regards to you all and thanks for a great site.
Traveller
Wifi Scanning...
Certainly not town-based, but WiFiFoFum gives me accessable WiFi APs.
Retina is another but again not town based.
Pardon my ignorance, but what would be the point since the XDA2 hasn't got wifi?

traveller's question was reated to XDA2s which certainly does have wifi - at least mine did !
Ah sorry. Didn't realise that.
Alays thought the only difference between the 2 and the 2s was the 1.3mp camera
OK
But anyway, why not google from your PDA and do a search for hotspots. No software needed !
I am a Cingular user, I was using Cingular for a long time and it worked fine for me. However, after this May, I found some problem by connecting Cingular service. On that time, I was using MDA II, at first I thought my PDA was broken so that I can't get the signal from Cingular and I bought a XDA EXEC from England.
However, problem still there. It is still so hard for me to get Cingular service. I have tried to put my SIM card to cingular phone, and it shows the connection well, at least 3 bars. Once I put it back to my XDA, the connection is very weak or most of the time, it doesn't work.
I wonder if anyone of you have the same problem with me? I have check that this XDA is an unlock phone and it works fine with other service, but not Cingular. I have no idea about what Cingular has done.
Please help, any solutions would be appretiate!

The signal is weak because the device does not support the most widely used frequency band among Cingular cell towers in the United States (850 MHz). You will find that as you travel into busier areas/cities/neighborhoods, it will significantly increase
Do you have any suggestion about what kind of service is better? I am considering T-Mobile, is it good?

It is very likely that T-Mobile will work better in your area. I, myself don't get such great service with Cingular at my home because I live in the suburbs. Anywhere else I go, my signal seems to be fine though.

I'm planning to buy a T-Mobile MDA - it's the Vario here, in the US - for mostly its WiFi, SKype and Remote Desktop. I saw in another thread that Skype just works fine - perhaps with a modest OC? - but I'm not sure how well this 200MHz TI CPU will handle encrypted RDP connections... any feedback would be appreciated!

I use pc anywhere v.12 pocket pcc addon and it works fantastic, even w/out OCing.
Remotely Anywhere, works also, I am using it sometimes over gprs. Install remotely Anywhere on your computer and log in with PIE http://someadress:someport and it wil asking about downloading a plugin.
It can also be used via IE and Firefox on a desktop.

Great news, thanks. Now only if I could decide to go ahead and buy it or wait for Vario II a few weeks...
actually, from the specs, i think the MDA is better than the MDA 2. and it isn't the Vario in the US, it is just the normal t-mobile MDA... it is the Vario in Europe.

? In terms of what? AFAIK MDA II has a faster CPU, supports HSDPA... sounds more future-proof to me.

I know, I just wanted to make it clear.
I doubt the mda 2 will be released in the u.s anytime soon. cingular is still working on their hsdpa service and tmobile hasn't even started rolling 3G out. so I think its best if u just buy the mda for now.

Right, it is true and I don't expect TMO will be offering any 3.5G here anytime soon - earliest date is probably next Spring - but keep in mind I'm planning to keep this 'phone' for 2 years or so, as I always did...
Hi All,
for about a month now, I have not been able to get H speeds for download on the T-Mobile UK network, I' flashed many roms, even got back to my Old WM6 room (k's rom) and still no High speed, it seems to me like it is a network problem but when taling to T-Mobile they say that everything is OK. is anyone else having these problems?
Go into start>settings>system>device information
what is the protocol version?

Hiya,
Just to let you know I'm replying to this thread on my laptop via T-Mobile UK, HSDPA on my Hermes...
I'm using a Schaps ROM (a full version but with TouchFlo turned off because it's a pig)...
Regards,
Rob.
Have T-Mobile got the HSDPA network coverage in the majority of places? I've only got it a few times and the same with a work colleague - only in certain places. Hasn't really bothered me but perhaps something to think about...
Oh I'm also using the Schap's latest ROM.

Are you on a contract with T-Mobile or Pay as you go?
The reason I ask is that I've been on Pay as you go with with T-Mobile for years! Last year I bought a 2nd hand Vario II off a friend who was on contract and had upgraded to a Vario III. Like you, I couldn't get H speeds with this phone no matter what I tried. My friend who'd had the phone before me had no problem getting H speeds with it... the only difference is that he was on a contract!
Later in the year I went on a P&O cruise around various european destinations and in several countries I managed to get H speeds, but once I got back in the UK I was again limited to 3G.
Anyway a couple of weeks ago I decided to change to one of their solo price plans and add the £7.50/month for internet use (It doesn't mention you can do this on their website, it only mentions it for flext and combi plans - but I asked them nicely and they gave it to me on solo )
Since then I've had H speeds practically all the time and it's not a different sim card either, I kept the same number and the same sim card - they just changed my account at their end.
So I reckon they don't let pay as you go users get HSDPA with a Hermes for some strange reason. Having said that my brother has a Sony-Ericsson WM890i on T-Mobile pay as you go, and he can get H's. Strange!
