Screen does not turn on when new email arrives - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi all,
I can't seem to get the screen to turn on when a new email arrives, however it does for new text messages. I have tried all the settings, and can't seem to find anything.
Thanks in advance.

Same problem here... I'm also looking for a fix....

I believe this problem has been resolved with v2.3 ROM update. I've got the same problem and T-mobile UK have only release v2.0

The screen will never turn on with Direct Push enabled. This extensive coding was done to allow email to be received when the device was in power save mode.
Why? Prior to direct push, email sync was maintained by a special SMS message which did turn on the screen. Battery life suffered dramatically because of this due to the hundreds of time per day the device would "wake up".
Microsoft did, however, fix the vibrate issue. In AKU 2.2 and greater, vibrate still works if its selected even when the device is in power save mode.

Email Notification

I now have the push email up and running but I can't seem to get my device to wakeup when I have new mail. I have to keep turning it on to see if I got new mail or not. This can be very annoying. Is there any way around this?
I have looked in notifications and under "new email message" I have it selected to display on screen and vibrate. What else do I need to change?
Hi DanITman,
I've got the same problem here.
With my HP6340 this works perfectly so when I bought the wizard I expected the same, but not.
Seems to me that active sync can’t wake up the wizard even if you change the registry to wake up WLAN after standby.
So if there is someone else who could help as that would be much appreciated.

I have no problem getting mail while in sleep mode. I just want it to notify me when I do receive mail by waking up and vibrating. Or stay in sleep mode and just vibrate. I would be happy with that. I just think that the push email is useless unless I get notified when an email comes in so I can respond promtly. I'm glad to see others are having the same problem and hopefully a fix will come out soon.
So if I understand you correctly your device can receive e-mail when it's in standby?
Do you use GPRS or WLAN for push e-mail?
I think you might have checked notification under sounds in the settings screen?

I use GPRS/EDGE for all of my email. ActiveSync works fine in sleep mode. However, when mail does arrive I don't know it until I turn my device back on manually, making the whole push email thing useless because i still have to check to see if I have received new mail or not. Under notifications I have it set to vibrate and show on screen when new email arrives (which it does) but only if its not in sleep mode or once I turn the device on manually it will begin to vibrate to tell me new mail has arrived.
Sorry can't help you with this one mate.
But you’re right, why no notification when your device is in standby.
Seems to me that there is no difference i notification between receiving an SMS or E-mail when you use push e-mail.
Maybe a bug in the test rom?
We will se when there is an official one.
Same issue here. Was never an issue using the old psuedo-push sms system with the old ROM.
Anybody know what the effect of never going into full standby mode would be on the battery? In other words, the screen backlight off but never in standby?

I have never been able to get this to work even when I had ActiveSync set to sync every 5 minutes with the old ROM. It wasn't a problem if you used the old SMS push system because the sms would wake the device up. I was hopeing it was my fault and I was missing a setting but it seems its happening to everyone. Its a pain in the ass.
I did some testing and found out that I can get it to play a sound in standby mode when I have a new email but it won't vibrate. Since my device is only syncing when told too by the server I am going to see if I can get it to vibrate at the end of an activesync and that could possible work.
Setting ActiveSync to vibrate after its finished doesn't work either. Even when the device is on
I was hoping that the "Wake Up to Full Power Mode" tweak in Tweaks2k2 might solve this one, but alas no go. Bummer.

Thanks for trying that. I think MS needs to get this figured out if they want these devices to be BlackBerry killers. Push email is useless if I don't know that I have email the minute it comes in.
this may not help, but it's worth a try......
i put my Wizard (with the new Rom) into a car cradle which is always powered..........therefore the unit is always on.........if the current program on screen is Inbox, then new email coming in does not sound the notification sound.......
if Inbox is running in the background or not at all, then i get the notification sound.......
so........ i tried at home both methods and even when switched off, Inbox needs to be running in the background and not the current program for the sound to notify in an off/standby state
but........ i do get sound notification in standby as long as it is running in the background (ie, when you switch it on, Today screen or Phone or any other app is the 1st thing that greets you)
i regularly get the sound going off through the evening whilst in standby mode....
I know it doesn't solve you problem, but Goodlink got it right.
I will get sound and vib while the unit is in stand-by.
you would thing MS would be able to do the same...
I assume its a glitch that will be fixed soon. Does anyone know where in the registry notifications are kept? I would like to do some searching to see what I can find.
Same problem...
I have the very same problem. Had it before the AKU2 ROM and still have it now. I have taken to using MortSaver and never putting the device in standby...battery doesn't seem affected. Still, rather have this working like it's supposed to out of the box...hope someone can find a solution!

Thanks. I am going to try this -- do you know if the program, which I assume is running in the background all the time, has any impact on device performance?
I have the Cingular 8125 and I love it, but I also have the same problem. I have Goodlink installed and if my device is sleeping it will not vibrate when emails come in. It will make the sound but no vibration. I am currently using Mortsaver for now to keep the device running with the screen off, so that I can feel the vibration and know that I have received an email.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Can anyone verify if this has been fixed in the new Kjam ROM. I don't want to upgrade until this gets fixed. The qtek test ROM is working really well.

I still can't believe that MS has screwed this seemingly fundamental feature up.
In any event, the workaround I am trying at the moment involves the new version of AEPButtons plus. Using this program, I set a double click PIE button action to turn the screen off. In settings, I have unchecked the "Turn Device off after" button so the device never goes to sleep. When I holster or put down my K-jam, I double click the PIE button to turn off the screen and save battery life/prevent accidental key presses. Since the device never truly goes to sleep, the email notifications still come and I get the vibrate telling me an email has arrived. At night or when I don't want notifications, I press the power button. It's not a perfect solution, but it seems to work OK and I don't seem to be missing as many emails coming in.

No sound after hours in standby mode

My Wizard becomes completely silent after 9 hours in standby mode.
I need to reset it to get back sound.
No rings either when someone is calling me.
Does someone know what is going on here ?
Please advise. Thank you.
Did anyone else notice this too on their Wizard ?
Ok the first thing to do is, think to yourself have i put any software on my PDA since this started happening!
Then if so try taking it off and see if that software effects the PDA
I have the same issue. No idea what causes it. I just reset because I'm too lazy to find the solution.
This is a real pain in the neck.
Yes, this is a real problem.
I noticed that many people have this problem, but not many notice it.
They simple use their phone regulary or shut it off in the night,
and so they will not notice it.
I am still looking into it, but I noticed that it happens sometimes not always.
But its a pain in the neck as it needs to be always on.
I also have my GPRS always on for receiving email,
further I use Wisbar and SPB pocket plus.
So in the evening everything is ok, but in the morning I often do not get
any sound (no sound either from incoming calls) and need to reset.
I noticed that this problem happens when for example email is automatically checked during night. If email comes in (and is not read immediately) the phone will start notifying in background.
Notifications are kept and only a program like "check notifications" will delete them manually. But still if you delete them, the phone then needs a reset
to work properly again.
This is not a memory issue, it has to do with the notifications.
I do not know how to solve it.

I have this problem too. It's been driving me mad for ages and I have reached the point were I'm ready to ditch the phone. It can happen within a few hours of a soft reset, causing me to miss most calls! I hadn't added any new software in the period before the problem started.
Your thoughts that it may be due to receiving email message notifications without clearing them seems feasible. I changed jobs around the time I noticed this problem start. I often get lots of emails while I am unable to respond to the notifications so it seems a likely link. Previously, I always responded to mail promptly and I never noticed a problem.
I'm going to look into this idea by first turning off all notifications for email in the "sounds and notifications" tool in Settings. If this doesn't work, I'll try disabling automatic email checking.
I'll report back with my findings
As promised, an update to my earlier post.
It's been about a week since I tried my "tweak" to try and correct the loss of sound when in standby...
IT WORKED!!
Since I've disabled email notifications my phone has worked continuously without a single problem. I'm still automatically checking for new mail every 10 minutes, I just check the "message" item on the today screen every now and then to see if any mails have arrived rather than have the device notify me. Not ideal but better than not knowing when my phone rings!
If you want to try the workaround, go to settings and open "Sounds and notifications" on the personal tab.
Click on the notifications tab and select "Messaging: New e-mail message" from the drop down "Event" box. Uncheck all of the check boxes so that no notifications occur and you should be alright... unless it happends for some other notifications as well!
Good Luck.

8525 won't stay asleep

Hello,
I just migrated from a 8125 to the 8525. One of the first things I did was upgrade to the latest (official) ATTWM5 Rom.
Something that the 8525 is doing that the 8125 did not do is staying asleep. From time to time when I put the phone (or it goes) into standby mode the phone will wakeup, and the screen comes back on.
Sometimes it does it when I get new a new message, otherwise it wakes back up for no apparent reason.
Is this a known bug or an isolated issue?
Thanks

It may be the Active Sync auto connecting (or trying to) problem. If you do not use direct push e-mail then you could try the fake server procedure here:

Thanks for the reply Mike.
But the thing is, Active Sync always ran on my Wizard (8125) when the phone was in standby/sleep mode. Even upon getting a message on the Wizard the phone would beep, and or vibrate but it would not wake up (come on).
I had a total of 2 8125's and both behaved the same way.
This being my first 8525 I can't compare this behavior to another.
I've also basically have the 8525 setup the same as my 8125 with much of the same programs installed.
BigTex.
mine is doing the same too. I format the whole phone and didn't install any applications just in case they wanna sync or something and yet still the screen doesn't wanna go to sleep. Keep on coming up every 15 mins or so which is very annoying and wasting my battery. I will try to sync thing and hope it fixes my problem.
My TYTN also does it... but it is so rare (less than once a month) I
haven't searched for a solution.
I have read that it might be caused by the ir port: the default
functionality is to accept incoming connections (in Settings > Connections
> Beam > accept all incoming beams). Light falling on the ir window
might trigger the device into thinking there is ir activity. If
this is the case, disabling this function might be a solution...
Jörg
my ir is turned off. so it can't be the problem. Plus I found out that if i don't accept all incoming beams, even if somebody else wanna send me something through bluetooth, my phone doesn't accept anything. So I have to turn on that feature to accept from bluetooth. I think it's weird.

Took a look at the settings on the IR port and it is off (not checked).
BigTex.
Try setting Active Sync to manual otherwise it will run by itself (unseen) in the background.
The person who posted above with a very regular switch on every 15 mins sounds more like a push mail setting.

But what I am saying is I shouldn't have to do that. On my 8125 Active Sync was set to sync "As items arrive" during peak times. Just like on the 8525.
I set the AS to only sync manually at night (11p-7a) and best I can tell it doesn't wake up. So I concur it is something to do with AS but why is the 8525 behaving differently then the 8125? I know it's a different phone, but both are running the same OS (WM5).
ok. i tried that activesync to manual and then my phone is still turning on the screen by itself. It's very annoying. Now I don't have any applications at all. Active sync is set to manual already. no 3G is connected. what else can I do? should I just reflash the firmware again?

Do you have email account set up 8525?
One of the option while setting email is to check email at every 5 minutes. if this is check (if you have email) then uncheck and see if that solved the problem.

The only email account I have on the phone is my Active Sync Exchange account that's been discussed earlier in the thread.
One thing I observed today. I still have my AS set to sync as items arrive and while I'm still having the issue, it doesn't seem to "wake up" every time.
Strange.
My 8525 does this too. I just set the profiles so that when the phone is off charger, the screen shuts off in 1 minute. For the nightime I set the screen to shut off in 30 seconds.
In the car (the car profile) it is set for 2 minutes.
That way this turning on uses as little battery as possible. i live in Providence, RI and think this might have something to do with switching from 3G to Edge - based on which signal is stronger.
OH! Yeah! You have to get phonealarm from PocketMax to do the profiles thing
see before i upgraded the firmware, i dont have that problem. so now i just took a chance and upgraded to WM6. no more screen problem.

Xperia, no pop3 check while in stanby

Hi folks,
i have an issue with my Xperia. While in stanby (display off) the device doesn't do any pop3 checks (send/receive) even tough it's set up to automatically check every 15 minutes.
Does anyone have an idea ?
Thx in advance...
I have the same impression with mine but I am not completely sure. It seems that the emails are only notified when I actually turned on the device doing something else with it.
Thats dissapointing if it's always like this.
Don't use the built in POP client, but using Seven (beta) I'm able to get Gmail pushed to me all day long even with the phone in Sleep (me pressing Power button).
Nice hint. can you post a link?
Any other ideas?

Jade won't run schedule receive/send email when sleep

I just got my Jade last week and found out this issue of it not being able to run the schedule email receive/send for every 15 mins (doesn't work on 10 or 30 either... did not try the others) when in sleep mode. However, it seems to work fine when I put it to charge.
Another issue is the sms notification (saw that in another thread but no solution thus far). It doesn't seems to vibrate or play the notification sound when new sms arrives after sleeping for a long while. However, when I wake it up (pushing the on/off button), it will immediately vibrate and plays the notification sound. I suspect it could be due to me charging the phone overnight. It looks like it is happening when the phone is fully charged.
Not sure anyone there facing the same problem?
ROM: 1.40.707.2 (21259)
Although I think the Jade is the best HTC phone I've owned (and I've owned many), it does have one big issue with its behaviour in suspend mode. I posted a thread on the problems with Microsoft Direct Push here earlier - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=457516
Other symptoms you might see are text message (SMS) notifications not always coming through until you resume from suspend and other 3rd party software failing to respond to events in suspend mode.
I've got an ongoing case open with HTC support on this issue - despite providing detailed information, including ActiveSync logs from the device itself they are still in the denial phase. I would urge anyone else with any of these "suspend" mode issues to report them to HTC support - maybe if they start getting a few reports of the same issue they'll investigate it properly and fix it in a subsequent firmware update (assuming they're ever going to release a bug-fix firmware update for the 3G).
SMS
In fact it's set like that, i don't know why but you should get the advenced config tool somewhere in this forum and you can enable these settings in Messaging.
