navigation system for XDA Exec - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

hello
I wanted to get a navigation system which would work with my xda exec. can you guys recommend one?
should i go for an SD card based one or a bluetooth solution?

I use Tomtom software, works perfectly and Holux GPSlim236 Bluetooth GPS receiver
Regards, Simon

thanks for the reply
i guess you use it in bluetooth mode?
what tomtom software do you use with it
i came across an all inclusive package from expansys
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=TOMTOM_MOBILE_5
what do you guys think of it?

Hi, I use Route66 nav7. cheaper than TOMTOM and with free taffic. TOMTOM is alot easy to use than ROUTE66. TOMTOM has a bad after sales team.

You require "TomTom Navigator 5.0" then the upgrade is needed to 5.21!
TOMTOM_MOBILE_5 is for smartphones (not PDA's)
Loads going on ebay:
NEW - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-TomTom-Na...9733242401QQcategoryZ4668QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
SECOND HAND - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TomTom-Naviga...ryZ75327QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Alternativley just search for tom* nav* 5 (exactly like that) on ebay
hope this helps.

thanks for the replies
so i can go for tomtom mobile 5 not tom tom 5 (which is for PDAs)
and the Holux GPSlim236 Bluetooth GPS receiver (is there any feature which differentiates between GPS receivers?)

It should work!!
the tomtom GPS reciever will work better and require less fiddleing to get it to work as the exec's can be a pain to set up tomtom!!!

thanks for the reply
what is teh difference between a smartphone and a pda. is not the xda exec a smart phone?

do you mean that i should go for a standalone tomtom gps receiver

hi,
Smartphones usually operate using the Symbian operating system your exec Uses Windows Mobile 5, a different beast.
Re the tomtom BT GPS, the Execs can be a bit of a pain to set up the comm ports on when configuring tomtom with another GPS, Holux, Etan etc, so I guess the advise was meant to say that in tomtom, you tick a box and GPS is configured and working.
Hope that helps,
Bryson!

XDA EXEC with TOMTOM mobile 5 (working with keyboard funny's

Hello all
I am new to this forum. So to start hello everyone. Nice to type ya.
Right can anyone help, i have got TOMTOM mobile 5 working with my XDA Exec. no problems (linked to a sirf3 tomtom bluetooth GPS )
but the only way i can navigate is using the qwerty keyboard and arrows.
I am unable to use the touch screen functions or the 4 way PDA
movement buttons thingymajig.
Any clever doods, lasses with any similar experiences.
p.s. The gps side works really well.
Just a point but Tomtom mobile is for smartphones and Tomtom Navigator is for XDA's.
Correct me if i'm wrong but that was my understanding.
navigator works fine on my exec..

Yep your right, and seen as no smartphones have touch screens, its no supprise the thing don't respond to screen presses!
you know what is weird, if you goto the tomtom webpage, they have an update for tomtom mobile so that it supports wm2005 meaning the i-mate jasjar... see it it is there. Should I use tomtom mobile instead now????
Don't think so for the reasons as stated above.
Right that explains alot
I will need Navigator and not Mobile.
time to get wallet out again.
Cheers

There is WM2005 for smartphones too! You need the to use navigator.
Just a quick follow up. installed tomtom5 NAV with TomTom BT receiver.
also got the Checkpoint 5 camera sw installed and running. Its been working faultlessly so far.
My first PDA and wow i like this xda exec.

New Wizard?

I heard there was a new wizard model coming out with built in GPRS receiver, anyone know if this is true?
I'm going beat everyone to the punch and save you massive scorn....the current Wizard has GPRS already in it! GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service, and is one of the ways Wizard (and many other phones) receives data.
Might you be referring to GPS (Global Positioning System)??? Wouldn't make sense for HTC to release an upgrade to Wizard with GPS as they release brand new models all the time (every few months it seems like). More than likely there is a phone out there that resembles the Wizard with the nifty slide out keyboard that also has GPS among other improved specs. Check out the wiki for other HTC phones (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/)
Oh, you're going to PAY for denying a beating...
lol, I meant the service that allows map software like tom tom to work (I guess this must be GPS then and not GPRS!!), because with the current wizard you need an additional bluetooth receiver right?

Yes, that is correct in order to use mapping software such as TomTom you will need a bluetooth GPS reciever.
thanks, man I feel like a doofus!

If you get a BT receiver (I isuggest the Holux GPSlim 236) you'll also need to activate the GPS panel in your wizard.
Here's a link with a nice tutorial. Courtesy of pockepc-Live, which I ran across on Molski's website (www.molski.biz) Thanks!!

Thanks for the info guys

Anyone using Bluetooth GPS?

Hi all,
Anyone using BT GPS?
If so, which one, how do you find it, and what software are you running.
Thanks Guys..
Ratzz,
I use a holux unit, coupled with Garmin Que and GPS Proxy. It only works well wih the tytn rom. I tried it with the DOPOD rom but it keeps freezing the screen.
Another note, Using the tytn rom has eliminated my alignment issues with regards to the screen.
regards
TomTom 6 & a Fortuna GPSlim.
Takes a little while to sort itself out when TomTom starts, but seems fine after a couple of minutes.
I cant use Tom Tom cause of the malaysian Map not being available
I'm using Holux GPSlim 236 with Destinator 6 when on the road and OziExplorer when roaming in nature.
yes I do
Using a Xloc and tomtom 6
Work great
Holux GPSlim 236 with Tomtom 5 (I am about to upgrade) and PTGmap for topo maps in Garmin format.
Using Destinator 6 (yep, I work in Destinator) with a large variety of BT GPS: GNS, Royaltek, Globalsat, Emtec and some others.
Do not forget that after you pair a GPS using MS BT manager, you also need to enable an outgoing portfor this connection.
I'm using Tom Tom 6 with Hamlet gps BT and it's ok!!!

I am using Iguidance with the Globsat 338 Its ok, the only problem is that if a call comes through, you have to restart the program.
Which one is the fastest and smallest SirfIII-based BT GPS unit you would suggest for TomTom?
Fortuna Clip-on for me, used with iGo on my m3100, although I have also used it with tomtom on previous pda's. Will upgrade tomtom and put that on a memory card shortly.
I'm using a Navilock BT338 GPS Mouse (SIRF3), which works perfectly together with my MDA3,MDApro and MDA Vario2 as well! I'm using it with TT5.21 for more than a year, and will upgrade to TT6 (just tested, works fine too!) soon.
The navilock keeps contact to satellites which are not seen/found by several others, can even be kept in your pocket and works without problems behind thermo-windows in cars! It is very small and is working over a whole day without loading, standby more than a week, and ist very easy to set up (connect to COM4).

what software for BELKIN GPS + MDA VARIO?

What software do I need to make my belkin GPS Bluetooth reciver work with my mda vario??

It should work "out of the box". Turn on BT, pair the devices, et voila.
If you want to have the GPS DO something, well that is a whole different subject and there are lots of posts.

Search is your friend.

Prophet & GPS?

Hi,
Does anyone recommend and GPS navigation products for the prophet? I have been looking around, and have had conflicting views on the TomTom mobile platform.
Any recommendations?
Cheers
I'm using iGo 2006 Plus with full Europe maps on only 1 GB SD card!
This program is very fast and optical very nice, because it's based on a game engine by PDAMill!

i'm using mapking, gpsgate with holux bluetooth device= Never let me down
iGo is the best
currently using holux bt gps receiver & garmin que s/w. not much maps/programs for us here in NZ. no problems using them
Used TT6 and a SiRF Star III bluetooth antenna for a while with no problems.
I use...
Tom Tom 6 with a generic bluetooth gps receiver, with Europe and North America maps on a 4 Gb SD card. Works beautifully, starts quickly and reliably.
I usually use it in the car (with a car windshield suction mount)
I have been using Google maps (free) with a gprs/edge connection but there is no voice guidance. I have a holux slim 240 bluetooth gps receiver which works good but sometimes it takes some time to find the satellites initially.
Destinator with Hollux
A Hollux receiver and Destinator 6.x works great for me.

GPS with Prophet
Most software are not bad..Best of all is the GarminXT with BT Holux 236.
I use TT6 and an Adadpt SirfIII BT reciever.
tried numerous other nav systems, but this one works the best around all europe, IMO.
I'm a courier IRL, so i have sh*tloads of experience with satnav systems
