loading up the CompactFlashBackUpPim onto o2 atom - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom General

does anyone have any idea how to load the contacts onto the o2 atom from the storage card , where i had backed up the contacts from the o2 XDA2 ..................?

1. Rename existing pim file (device)
2. Copy sd card pim to device folder.
3. Reset device. contacts etc. are now restored on the device.
4. Delete the one you renamed.
I hope thi is what you are looking for.

Where can I find the contacts pim file in my Win2005? I have the same problem.....upgraded my 2003 to 2005 and cant restore backup...If the method you mentioned works....please enlighten me alittle bit more. Thanks.

There is no way to get the contacts stored in WM2003SE and load them in WM2005 using pim or compactflashbackuppim.
The only thing you can do, is using the PPCBckpContacts application which allows to backup the contacts in a csv file. There is a WM2003SE version and a WM2005 version. Just do a backup in WM2003SE and restore it in WM2005.
This application can be found here:

How to make Sprite Backup 3 work with XDA2??

can someone please help me to get sprite back up v3 to work on my xda2. my aim is to backup my device to my PC. it either freezez my xda2 or hard resets it!!!
thanks a lot
Only after I bought Sprite 3.0 I found out it doesn't work properly. In my case, V3.0 erased my SMS after a restore! Solution? According to Sprite SOftware, they working on it. In the meantime, this is what I did:
For the first Backup
- Make an executable (.exe) backup file and save it to Storage (permanent storage on your XDAII). It will be a slightly bigger file
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail option and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Prgogram Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup. You need to do the executable file only once
For daily backups, save them to a storage card.
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail opetion and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Program Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup.
To Restore
- Run the executable backup file first
- Then do a soft reset
- Run Sprite and restore form your last daily backup file
It anly sound akward, but it worked for me!
PS: You will loose your e-mail account settings and all its folders' contents. But I found that I could live with this. It's better than having to reinstall all software to your XDAII again!
..like walking on thin ice!
hey michael..thanks for the details.. but sprite backup seems to hate xda2..
is there a way to back up to pc with this workaround? can i use the same approach but pc as the destination?
any news when sprite will release the new version?
anyone knows of another backup sw that backs up xda2 to PC?
thanks

I hate to be arguementative - but I am using Sprite Pocket Backup v.3 with my imate and it is working perfectly. It even restores my SMS!
Are you sure you are not using ver. 2.X which did have the SMS restore problem?
I've tried with my xdaII , the sms inbox was restored OK, but I have some problem after the backup restored. I never received SMS anymore.
don't know why....
so I never used it again.
i'm using imate with rom 1.72 and sprite backup v3
Hey Brian
Can u please give details about yr device, e.g rom etc. and installed applications.. i never got to to work on the imate. please give some details on if u were able to backup to pc?
anybody know of any program that backs up imate to pc?
thanks

On my MDA2 SpriteBackup crashes! (automatic backup timed at 23:55 everyday) Looks like some file is in use and Sprite is not able to backitup and the whole backup process is stopped. So on my MDA2 backup has NEVER finished!
I'm using backup in ActiveSync - I have it set to automatic mode - everytime I put my MDA2 into the cradle, it synchronizes with outlook and then does FULL BACKUP.
And I'm sure this kind of backup works well - I restored my MDA many times after hardreset from ActiveSync's backup and everything was always OK.
hawk -
Your second question first - Of course you know that ActiveSync can backup your PPC to your PC (Tools -> Backup/Restore). Also, Sprite Backup ver.3 can backup to your PC as well - it can install a tool in your system tray to run the Sprite Backup PC Service.
I had version 2.X of Sprite Backup and experienced the SMS service failing to receive messages after a restore. With ver. 3.0.0 I have actually restored my imate after an unintentional HR and SMS worked perfectly thereafter.
Now, for my configuration:
imate with ROM Ver. 1.72.00WWE
1GB SD card
VITO Voice Dialer
PHM Registry Editor
MS PocketStreets
m-possible Backgammon
HP Mobile Printing
Zendrui PocketZenPhone
Syntact GameBox
Sprite Software Sprite Backup
Sprite Software Space Detective
Sprite Software PocketMon
Spb Pocket Plus
Mobimate WorldMate Pro
MS Cubicle Chaos
Laridian Pocket Bible (with 10 Bible translations)
Laridian Daily Reader
Illium Software eWallet
Total Commander
Adobe Acrobat Reader 1.0
A.Khogo tAgenda
SSnap
IDiff
I also have the drivers for the Stowaway keyboard installed.
It's pretty well loaded!

What version? I'm using spritet 3 v1517 without issue. Email and SMS restore correctly. The only conflict I've found is using GPRS monitor.
I had the same problem with the earlier versions of Sprite Backup too. After restoration, my XDA will have a complete blackout on SMSs. So i have decided not to install it again.
BRosenow, is your Vito Voice Dialer the PE version? I can't seem to get the non-PE version to work tho.

Sprite Backup
I'm using it with my XDA II and no problem. I restores everything as it was. Using Sprite Backup V3.0.0 build 1517.
I don't backup to my PC but to a SD card.
Regards,

whats the reason to backup to a pc using something like Sprite
over just using activesync's pc backup restore option ?
i understand the sd card backup but not why people use it on pc's
If I'm not wrong ActiveSync backup from PC gives problems with restore after a ROM upgrade.
Maybe that's the reason. I agree with you. It has no additional value.
Mark
I use Sprite to backup my imate to my laptop from time-to-time, just in case something were to happen to my SD backup (loose the SD card, backup files become corrupted, etc.). Considering the little time and storage space it takes, what's the harm in having a little insurance?
And I use the Sprite backup to PC because it takes about 2 min. for a full backup . . . can ActiveSync do that?
nah
with ms you get what you pay for since activesync is free is slow can be
a full backup prob take about 15->30min
i prefer to use the same program 1. to backup to sd card & pc for compatiblity reasons in order to exchange files if needed, 2. sprite does exe files 3. activesync may not restore to a newer rom properly.
the funny thing is some people are using sprite with no problem, others like me are just going thru hell to make it work.
on sprite's support they mention something about stopping some processes in windows\startup\
tried that too, didn't work.
can anyone diagnose the problem with the inconsistency of the results from one person to the other and definite solution?
Hawk
Maybe the ROM version that differs! Sprite Backup works for me fine. See my ROM version below with my signature.
My startup folder contains:
AFlashman, BTTrayCE, CFlashMan, CheckAutorun, ChgDFLnk, IA_Caller_ID, MMREG, NFlashMan, poutlook, stk, Symantec Antivirus, TFlashMan

Well . . . you need to be VERY selective of which files you restore after a ROM upgrade anyway. You cannot do a full restore (from a full backup) after a ROM upgrade, because .exe and .dll files (and others) will be restored, replacing the newer versions. This leaves the device in a state that is somewhere between the two ROM versions and will cause all sorts of problems.
You should only restore documents, email and personal databases - not system data.

Hi, thanks!
It installs ok but when I run it, it gives me an error message 'You cannot run this program on this device'
I guess it's only meant for Atom Exec. I'm trying to run it on Atom.
Anyone have any idea how to backup SMS on WM5 devices? I used to use Jeyo Mobile Companion 1.1 on WM2003SE and it works very well but it is not compatible with WM5. Anyone have any other software? SPB backup & Sprite backup, does a 'full' SMS/email backup and they are not able to restore individual SMS. Looking for one that can backup automatically and can restore individual SMS, that would be great!
Thanks!

Try Jeyo Mobile Extender for MS Outlook 2003. This is a PC program, that will be "embeded" into MS Outlook and will synchronize your SMSs like a mail folder in your MS Outlook through Activesync.
I use this program to backup and restore SMS... It was for Dopod 818 on WM2003, but works without problems on WM5 and Atom... You just have to create a folder called "Storage" or "Storage Card", then backup your sms there by choosing the path inside the program... Then you can move the .sms file that was created where you want to keep it safe, and copy it back into one of the two folders I wrote before when you want to restore your messages.
Yup, it's working

Jeyo Mobile Extender 2.0 for Outlook
Dear Appu
Jeyo Mobile extender is an ad on to Microsoft Outlook and it syncs the SMS folder into the outlook. So even if you have a hard reset it will be in the outlook for u to sync back the SMS folder into your ppc. Works for WM05 and i'm using an Atom. , only thing missing is MMS to be backed up.
check it out. psst this is a secret almost everyone know.. the crack is also available theheheeheh.
check this out for more info on jeyo http://www.jeyo.com/index.asp
cheers
nope sultan.. it doesnt bak up folders i've created.. folders which can be created wen i want under the inbox folder... only jeyo sms backup which comes with the atom exec rom has been able to do it for me yet.. but it doesnt work on the regular atom rom.. and cant even use the exec rom coz of its grafics driver somehow gettin reseted with drain of battery or, removing the battery.. :?
Nice program. Got all my incoming messages fine, but all sent items are blank?
It's also mostly in a language I don't have fonts for I think! Lots of squares on the screen! Still, simple to use - menu is in English (Lucky for me! )
Thanks for posting it!
Hey, can I view the messages on PC when I back them up? How do I make sure I have ALL the messages backed up?

Backup Contacts

Any recommendations for software that'll backup my contacts? I really don't want to install Outlook, and I don't want to just copy them to SIM as this screws up the names and other stuff, as the SIM only holds a short name and 1 number.
I'm shutting the door after the horse has bolted here, as I just had to do a hard reset and have lost all my contacts that I've had for years.
I don't want to backup anything else, just contacts - preferably in a format that allows me to restore them exactly as there are: First Name, Last Name, Home, Mobile, Work numbers, e-mail addy, etc.
Thanks

I made a tool for that long time ago, called PPCBckpContacts. This tool allows to backup/restore the contacts from/to any ppc running WM2005 or WM2003SE. Because the format of the DB changed between the 2 OS, two versions of the tool have been made.
The tool creates a .csv file, that you can edit in Excel.
**************************************************************************
Update in v1.6 :
- Removed the SD card presence check, now all backups can be saved wherever you want.
**************************************************************************
Update in v1.5 :
- Speed Dials backup/restore (.csd)
- Tasks backup/restore (.cst)
- Appointments backup/restore (.csa)
- Call Logs backup/restore (.csl)
Each backup type has its own file type (see above). Caution I changed the extension from previous versions for contacts (.csc). These 5 extensions are associated to the program, so they can be restored via explorer directly.
**************************************************************************
Update in v1.4 :
- fix for the notes (the contact notes were successfully exported to the csv file, but the import didn't work) (thanks lvlx for detecting the bug).
- VGA aware
Cheers,
.Fred
Thank You!
Thank You this will save me a LOT of time if my phone needs to be reset again. I have already had to redo my contact list twice because I don't use Outlook (and let me tell you, it is NOT fun).

Nope, the contacts are taken from the pim database. I don't think the contacts from the SIM are stored in the PIM db.
That, sir, is brilliant - thank you.
I've signed up for a free exchange account at mail2web: http://live.mail2web.com/
This means you can get all your contacts back by just running active sync and a gprs or wifi connection. A good backup even if you have Outlook as it's remote and doesn't depend on your pc!
Just copy the pim.vol to SD card
A quick and effective backup method is to copy the pim.vol in the root directory to your SD card. I used this method when flashing my rom. You'll need to use Totalcommander to change the rights of the file after flashing because it's read-only, then copy the pim.vol from the SD to the root directory and reset and all should be well.
All credit to the original poster of the tip. I don't remember where I got it from either either here or howardforums.

I completely agree with you except that it seems there is an incompatibility between the versions before AKU 3.2 and the ones after AKU 3.2
BTW In only tested AKU 2.3 and AKU 3.2, so I can't tell for the other versions.
I always copy the pim.vol to my SD card, but when I upgraded to AKU 3.2, I couldn't use my pim.vol, the contacts application just opens then closes directly.
The only solution I had, was to copy the pim.vol in the emulator on my pc and use PPcBckpContacts to have the backup, then I could restore my contacts on my ppc.

BTW, could you write a similar tool to all PIM databases? Then, your app would be unique - not even the latest version of SKTools is able to restore this kind of stuff.
I'll also post a news item to the PPCMag blog / on all PPC sites on this utility.

Great idea and a potential life and time saver .Fred But how about a little instruction, and more information on your program Sir. Must it run from the device, or can it be run from the pc so long as the pim.vol file is available on the pc? Is it intrusive, eg will it cause any harm to the pim.vol db when it runs? Does it properly include ALL phone numbers, and notes for each contact in the resulting .csv file? Etc, etc.
I didn't see a reference to your own tool in the BackupBible but I have to admit I didn't read it thoroughly. If it is there and you could direct me to it that would be great. Very informative article btw.

Did you try to restore a backup from WM5? The WM6 and WM5 PIM databases are different and you will corrupt WM6 by doing this (so if you use like SPB backup to restore your contacts from WM5, it screws it up).
Here's your fix:
Start>Settings>System>Clear Storage
Type 1234 and hit yes. Reboot and voila. All done.
I promise this is your fix.
i didnt use a spb backup but i did move everything from old xda could i of accidently moved my old pim database? if so where is it located to remove?

You don't (or can't) use a WM5 backup on WM6. You would have needed to us a program like PIM Backup to take the backup on WM5, then you can restore that on WM6. Or, just resync with Outlook (if you use that).
As to your other question, what do you mean you "moved" everything from your old XDA? How did you "move" stuff?
i dragged it off in file explorer to my pc and dragged it all back on
basically i need a clean wm6 pim file by sounds of it and need to know location to move it to to get it working again

pim.vol is located in the root of your drive. Use TotalCommander and you can see it there in / .
I've never messed with the file, but you might try renaming it, then do a softreset and see if a new one is created (warning, this could screw up your phone, but it sounds like its screwed up anyway). The other is do a hardreset, or reflash the device.
