Hi, i'm looking to buy the i-mate JAM from Amazon, i would like to know all the problems that people have faced with their devices and those which cannot be fixed. for example, i know there's an audio problem which can be fixed in which case i would return the device for a replacement, however, there's apparently a problem with slow SD interface which seems to be in all versions of the Magician, how serious is this problem. and finally would you recommend and even encourage me to buy the device......I would hate to be dissapointed with the device especially when i am cutting down on alot of things to save for this device.....thank you very much for your response
slow SD is not a problem xda2 is slower then the xda1 and the imate is slower then the xda2 lol
Does that affect the mp3 and video play on the device?

I have a problem with the microphone gain when in a phone call. The gain is far to low. According to Qtek in Sweden a new rom will be available soon, which will fix the gain problem.

Yup... I agree... My current problem is the volume when the Mini acts as a phone and then I get screwed over by another volume setting as an MP3 player.
Yes, I recommend this deivce to you. Size is good and the screen is acceptable.
How does it compare to the Blue Angel in your opinion?

- wrong white balance in the camera (a patch should solve it)
- you can't listen mp3 while using vibro
- in conclusion nothing special
provided you don't get a lemon, you should be fine... my experience is please check the battery life! :shock:
I had my XDA II stolen at gatwick airport last week (sniff sniff) and am now looking to replace it.
From the complete range of HTC PDA's the XDA IIi seems to be tickling my fancy the most but I haven't really come across a single comprehensive review.
So are people who have purchased it happy?
Whilst I am aware that there are problems with the camera I can live with it as long as it is not worse than the XDA II .
So what say you O Ye owners of the IIi?

I got mine last week and I'm honestly torn...
The camera is CR*P, completely so! But as I never used the one on the XDA2 for more than the odd picture message and photo record I'm not particularly bothered - though it's a cheek for O2 to pronounce it as a major step forward when in many ways it's a regressive one.
My major headache is the IR and Bluetooth...IR seems even worse now than on the XDA2 - unless I'm missing something - and the BT stack currently on my phone means I cannot use the O2 BT clip headset (made by iTech) due to this (in my opinion) stupid handsfree obsession. Surely it would be a good idea to have a headset AND a handsfree option that WORKS. I understand on some headsets it works a treat, but given I've got one being sold by O2 on their website I would normally assume it would work.
That said, the 2i is a great phone in itself and if I weren't already spoilt having had the XDA and XDA2 before it, I would be in absolute amazment.
They've finally managed to get the o2activeui thing in a state which isn't too bad and I may even consider keeping it - though it's harder to remove than in the past.
If you have to upgrade which it sounds as though you do given your circumstances, I'd choose the 2i over the 2s...at least the 2i is a better phone spec wise though without the keyboard (gimmick if you ask me).

Thanks for the feedback Anthony. One thing that's slightly irritating me is a few places i've visited on the net state how previews often have some of the specs wrong on the O2 site it states that the IIi has 128MB SDRam and 128MB Flash......is this accurate?
Have you tried out the Wifi and if so what d'you reckon?
Does the faster processor make a noticeable difference? e.g on my XDA II I was running loads of today plug ins as well as several applications by default I'd do a soft re-set at least once a day
As for the IIs even though when I compare the II and the IIs side by side it doen't appear that much bigger it still has a bulky-ish look about it and I just don't find it appealing enough to contemplate a purchase.
Your feedback on the above would be appreciated

I have tried out the Wi-Fi and it seems OK to me, certainly it's a welcome feature. However I don't have a Wi-Fi card that I can compare experiences on...all I know is I didn't have one before and now I have a wi-fi connection. That can't be bad.
I don't have enough stuff loaded onto the phone to make a judgment on the processor. With the 2 I had lots of things running such as WeatherPanel and KitaraGenesis - also at one point Pocket Plus. From what I've seen so far the 2i does feel a bit faster...there's also a Turbo feature which does seem to further increase performance.
The 2i is exactly the same size I think, perhaps a smidge heavier. Having said that, if you compare most mobiles these days, the XDA series is no longer heavier than the majority. Besides, if you've got a PDA phone you're not expecting it to be light as a feather.
As I said previously, now you've got no option I would definitely go to the 2i...

As to theWiFii hadaXDA2 witha SandiskWiFi Card, then changed to the XDA2s, then after 4 replacements i now have a XDA2i, ifind the XDA2i range and speed of reconnecting to WiFi very very good, the XDA2s worked as well asthe XDA2 + SD WiFi Card.
I like the 2ivery much, only problem is i gave away all my XDA2 bits when i got the 2s, so now i have lots of bits for a phone i dont have and a 2i with no spair bits, got i wish i haddent got rid of my old XDA2 bits
i still soft rest a few times aday, but i am used to donigthis now and dont have a problem doing it, The Bluetooth for headsets (jabbra 250) works as well on the 2i as it did on the old XDA2, where as the 2s was total crap

Has the bluetooth improved at all? With my XDA II I also has a Jabra BT250 whilst I found it excellent at close range as soon as the device was in (or out) the metal proporta case and in my pocket I got alot of static...also can you now hear the different ringtones in your bluetooth headset or is it still the same generic one?
Finally, if I get the phone from O2 with their minimum line rental fee it works out to about 407 quid in total....anyone know of any cheaper places?

After hearing about the new XDA2s i purchased a sim free PDA2k, but the microphone on it was crap and the bluetooth (headset) range was like 6 inches after that it sounded terrible.
So as soon as we could get a UK XDA2s we did ( we are a small phone shop) i got it sim free, This was just as crap as the PDA2k, Sothen i did a upgrade to a XDA2s with o2 Select, and of corse this was crap as well
(by crap i mean the mic was terrible people had problems hearing me, and the bluetooth headset only worked if you held the phone next to it, as a PDA it was sort of alright)
so after speaking to o2 about its problems and the fact the keybopard soon comes loose, it was changed probley every 2-3 weeks, never any better for phopne calls but of corse a new one the keyboard is still tight (for a while)
anyway after the 6th phone (4th o2 replacement) i changed it to a XDA2i
The camera in the XDA2i just gives a bigger crap picture, but at leat i can make phone calls on this one and people can hear me, and i dont have to drive down the road with my bluetooth ear piece in and have to hold the phone to the ear piece to use it

Does the movie function work better?
I know the camera makes a bigger "crap" photo but how is the video? On my XDAII, with all the today plug in's, the thing records crap even at the best settings. With a fresh ROM and nothing installed, I can get a decent video if I set the refresh rate and set it to daylight, (even for night shots), but after I install some programs, no settings can keep it from being choppy and slow or keep the sound in sync with the video.
Believe it or not, the video function, as bad as it is, actually saved my ass from going to jail.. If the XDA2i has better video performance, and it sounds like the BT is better, I want one... Is there any place besides eBay and O2?
Could someone tell us what version of the BT stack it is?
Any body try it with two serial ports yet? (One for a GPS and one for a Printer or POS device (like from Merchantanywhere.com).

the bt stack on my xda2i is 1.0.0.3900
Mine is also 1.0.3900 and I can't use o2's bt clip headset with it....refuses to play ball yet others work fine.

By clip do you mean the earpiece, with a foot of wire then a clip on bluetooth reciever? If you do O2 sent one of them out to me but as i use a jabra 250 i never tried the clip thing.
Would you like me to try it with my XDA2i (also version 3900)

I have both an XDAII and an XDAIIi and would be willing to give some comparitive information regarding them. Or try to answer any specific questions you have about them.
On another note, what alternatives do we have here with regard to a Windows Mobile device?
For Skype user, which version did you put on magician? Low CPU version, or the normal one?

I used the normal one not the low cpu version - with the most recent build the performance is great over wifi on the magician . I can walk around with the headset and talk . I can't get bluetooth to work yet on pocket skype.
I have my PDA running at 585 with pocket hack............ but even at 416 I get no break up at my end of the telephone coversation or from the other party I am speaking too.

I noticed skype gets sluggish in my mini if I use it continuously. However, when I use the low CPU version, I get better performance. YMMV.

I overclocked my Dopod 818 pro to 276 Mhz and Skype works like magic without hassles

don't overclock for too long. The most feasible setting that is observed is 240MHz. Your battery wont die on your all at once and skype (low CPU) will work perfect
Be careful not to fry its motherboard!

Recently I attempted Skype (at 228mhz) on the local GPRS/EGDE network ...I was able to dial/connect and receive the voice from the person I called but they were unable to hear my voice.

I tried the Low-CPU version since its meant for 312MHz PPC versions
But...I can barely hear the other party. The voice seems badly distorted.
I then switched to the High-CPU version and I can hear the other part lt least.
Anyone had similar experience as above?

This is so amazing....I can only overclock mine to the max of 263MHz anything more it will go bonkers Immediately.
How u manage to push it to 276MHz....any pointers?

I was able to get the original Skype that came with my Jamin working. The program is installed on a Sandisk 2gb Ultra SD card and I overclocked the processor to 240mhz.
What is more interesting than Skype is a service called SIPDiscount http://www.sipdiscount.com/en/index.html . Go to that site and sign up for 10 euros, or you can use it free for 1 minute at a time to test it.
You can run the SIP service on a program called SJPhone for PPC http://www.sjlabs.com/sjp.html download the 2003SE version for pocket pc. They work great together and you can even call out to a US land line for free! No overclocking is neccessary because it is much lighter than Skype.
I've attached a text file that explains how to set up SJPhone to work with SIPDiscount. These directions work for the normal PC computer version of SJPhone also.

P.S. You should always use a good headset with microphone for the best sound quality, without a headset there is usually an echo.
on my JAMin with SKYPE 2.00 Higher CPU one, the other person's sound comes out of the SPEAKER PHONE, is that normal or can I somehow switch to regular earpiece
I have a JAMin overclocked to 240, using Skype latest version low cpu, and over Wifi I have a decent, usable sound quality. I haven't tried it over Gprs/Edge.

I was using Low-CPU (312MHz) version, I can hardly hear other party also. I will try to over-clock and see if it works or not. Or should we use High CPU version? Can anybody provide us the correct version and procedures in a more systematic way?

I don't overclock my S200, but it's running Skype perfectly. I've downloaded the latest 2.0.0.51 Skype version, installed and started without any problem. I made a voice chat with my friend via Wi-Fi network, he heard me and I heard him clearly.
It's just for people who want to buy Prophet but afraid about Skype not working.
Well, in my Qtek S200 i make a shortcut to overclock the cpu to 240Mhz and run Skype. When i exit skype the cpu clock becames 180Mhz.
I tested in a wifi connection without any problems. With GPRS i haven´t testet yet, but i think GPRS doesn´t have enough upstream to make Skype work properly.
This is my 50 cents!

Skype for ARM
Hi Guys
Well, first of all, I don't have the S200 yet, I'll get it today or on tuesday. I did some research before ordering it:
When it comes to Skype, there seems to be a lot confusion about how to run it smoothly. The problem seems to be, that Skype is compiled to run on an Intel Xscale processor. Well, as we all know, the S200 has an TI OMAP processor and that one has an ARM architecture. Search on Google a little bit, and you'll find out the differences. A TI OMAP 200MHz Processor is comparable to an Xscale 400-450MHz Processor only that the OMAP uses less power.
Naturally, ARM has a lower CPU frequency, but the benefit of it is, that it is multitasking. Xscale is a straight-forward processor, ARM does many things in parallel. This difference in architecture causes problems if one runs an Xscale Program on an ARM processor, because the program does not delegate the different tasks to the different units on the ARM, but only forwards them to the main ALU. That one, of course is overwhelmed, while the rest of the Processor doesn't know what to do.
Conclusion: Skype is for Xscale --> does not use the OMAP all the way and with all the available features (Sound ALU, WIFI ALU, ...)
What we need is a Skype that is made for the processor architecture of the S200
Search on Google and you'll find the following:

Of course it is an old version, I don't exactly know what has changed with skype, but as far as I know the protocol is still the same, so calling should not be a problem.
Anyways, I think I'll try the new Skype version first, and then the old one and will compare it.
You'll hear back from me, of cours I'll be happy if somebody else could try it as well and tell us what he or she experienced

Im using skype 2.3 on my HP RW6818 with a spectec minisd wifi, and everything is working perfectly. Though you need to set the AGC to 3, Skype echo cancellation on and the volume to 30% in order for it to work, i wouldnt recommend using the headset as it may do damage on your phone.
Now you just need to put the phone upside down, so the speakerphone becomes the earpiece, and have a normal phone type conversation. Dont worry about the mic, it will still function normally eventhough its on top.
I tried using the Skype for Windows Mobile version on Atom Life. Seemed to work fine for text. The voice call worked fine for about 15 mins but by then the device became very hot and it switched off. It wouldn't come on until it after some time when it cooled a bit
I have no plans of using the voice comms again.
