Using a Port other than 3389 for Terminal services ????????? - Networking

Hi,
Is it possible to use a port other 3389 with the Terminal services client?
Or is this hardcoded into the client ?
Thanks
Rob

No its not possible. Also the server always runs on port 3389.

REALLY!
Please explain ? As we run a multiple server network with Terminal services running on various port from 3385 up to 3399. We also change the default port on our workstations (XP prof) from 3389 This a well documented item. You then specify in Terminal server client:- IPORT. Example: 84.234.456.789:3396. Use it everyday!
Rob

two ways that you can do this:
1: on the host machine, regedit to here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp
Find "Portnumber" and open. Click on "Decimal" and change to the desired port. The PC will now listen on your specified port number for incoming terminal service requests.
2: If you have a router you can use port redirection. (virtual servers etc)
Specify the ext port number (eg. 3390) then the int port number (3389) then the IP address of your target PC. This will redirect all traffic recieved on port 3390 to port 3389 to your specified internal IP address.
To access remotely for example using remote desktop connection, enter your IP address (or dynamic DNS address) followed by :3390
Hope this helps
J

Thanks Codiac,
So you can't specify the port in terminal services client connection box (as per a Full size PC runing XP Prof) only as a registery change.

Your piccy is right, you can enter IP addresses followed by a port number.
eg: 81.33.44.55:3399
The problem with, for example XP Pro is that it will only listen on 3389 by default, the registry change is necessary if you want to access more than 1 PC on a network.
As per your piccy, once you have edited the registry to a chosed port, the PC will then listen on that port (eg. :3390).
I personally use Option 2, this requires no change to the registry of a PC, the router does the redirection for you.
for example:
PC 1 = 192.168.0.1
PC 2 = 192.168.0.2
To access PC 1 allow a rule in the router to pass port (external) 3389 to (internal) 3389 to 192.168.0.1
To access PC 2 allow rule in router to pass port (external) 3390 to (internal) 3389 to 192.168.0.2
this way, when you open the remote desktop connection client and enter say, 81.44.231.22:3390 the router will see 3390 and redirect it to 3389 straight to 192.168.0.2
Hope this helps
J

Hi Codiac.
I think I'm confusing you here. Port change, at the host is not the problem. Either by router redirection, or registry edit of the listening port of the HOST. Its the CLIENT in Win mobile 5 wont let you specify a port when connecting to a host. You can with a registery edit of the Win mobile client on the Pocket PC, change the port, but not at connection IP 'time'

Remote connection to home PC or work

How can i connect my home pc or work pc through my Pocket PC through GPRS.Is it possible by any software.
Yes, this is assuming you have set your home PC to accept incoming Remote connection, and selected which users has the permission.
From your Pocket PC, you can use Terminal Service Client:
- First of all, you must know your home PC's IP Address.
- Launch Terminal Service Client, key in your home PC's IP Address, click connect.
- Once connected, you'll be prompted username and password to log in.
- Always use a different username than the one already logged on, as this will log the current desktop session off.
Well, since most of us use Dynamic IP DSL connection, the IP address changes everytime the PC reconnects. Therefore I have made a small Windows program to be run in the home PC to constantly update its current IP address to a website. So, from anywhere you can log on to this site (just bookmark the site) and check your home PC's current IP address. If you're interested, you can try my program, it's free.
http://www14.brinkster.com/MyLastIP
It's designed to fit a PPC browser.
Iam using XP prof.Where is Terminal service there, can u loacte.I want to test first with ActiveSync to connect my PC from Pocket PC.I have launched Terminal service in Pocket PC.It asks for Server. Its my Home pC IP address?
Please help again iam new to this!!

Make sure, your XP Pro is set to accept Remote connection, from your XP Pro PC:
- Start > Control Panels > System > Remote > Remote Desktop
1) Check "Allow users to connect to my computer"
2) Click "Select Users" to add users which you allow for Remote Connection. * Strongly advise you to set password for each username
Once this is done. You can check your PC's IP address:
- Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
1) Type in ipconfig
2) You will the various IPs for your PC.
If you want to test using your Pocket PC, use your PC's LAN IP. (Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection).
However when your on WiFi or GPRS, you'll have to use your PC's WLAN IP, which you can obtain by using my program I mentioned earlier.
Thank you so much. But can itry to browse my PC dekstop while i have connected to Intenet and using Active Syn while i have docked my Pocket PC in the cradle.

Yes, you can. However, you'll still use your home PC's LAN IP when the PocketPC is docked in the cradle.
I have come out with the guide on how to use MyLastIP client and thet website:
http://www14.brinkster.com/MyLastIP/guide/guide.asp
Its realy nice job!!As you said to use Home PC Lan IP.I dont have netowrk on Ethernet card no cable pluged in.So i cant see Lan IP address. When I tried POcket PC Terminal its not connecting to Server,i was trying by USB Docked PPC.What to do
I gather your not connected to a LAN nor having an Ethernet card installed.
If you want to try out Terminal Services Client from your PocketPC, you may want to download this program called vxUtil from http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html
Once u get this program, you can view your Pocket PC's current IP addresses. If you want to use TSC via USB cradle, take a look under "Serial on USB", the IP address for its Default Gateway should be your PC's IP address.
VPN?
Great thread for me guys. Really helped a lot. Now I can use Terminal Services to remote control my VPN Server which has the public internet IP address.
Next, however, I need to remote operate one of the workstations on my VPN. I tried logging onto the VPN through GPRS that worked. I can TS remote the server, but cannot connect to the workstation. After connecting to the VPN I tried TS with the workstation ip (local network ip of 168.192.xx.xx All I got was a could not connect server timed out message. Any ideas?
Thanks
BTW the LAst IP Address web site is a great idea for us that travel constantly. Thankfully my cable modem keeps my IP address fairly static for long periods at a time. But this will make a great backup for those Murphy Law times when I gotta get on and the modem rebooted! Thanks for a great service.
Steve
Did anybody tried J-Desktop to access via Pocket PC?

Could it be a built-in or personal firewall installed on the workstation? or maybe the workstation's port for Remote Desktop is not opened?
VPN
No, no firewall and remote is open. In deed, I have VNC running on the workstation and after logging on to the vpn i can remote the workstation using vnc viewer. but i hate the interface compared to TS and don't really want to run another server if not necessary. btw i can run the workstation from my xp laptop using remoe desktop connection after logging ono the vpn
thanks for any tips.

LAN access USB

Hi.
I need to have lan access from my pocketpc 2003 (Qtek s110 / magician) using usb cable.
Activesync is version 4.0
When using internet explorer i am able to navigate using the usb cable, after specifying the proxy server, username and password(!!).
using the vxutil i see that the ppc IP is 192.168.55.101 (Serial on USB)
default gw is 192.168.55.100 (is the pocketpc, or the host conputer??)
My computer's IP addres is 10.0.100.108 (given by the enterprise DHCP)
on Vxutil, when i try to ping my computer (by the name) or any other computer on the nework the name is resolved(!) in it's IP address but ping times out everytime. Strange because DNS server is 127.0.0.1 (localkhost) and dont have any hosts file (at least that i know of).
Can it be a route missing on my local computer? but there is no network interface to the qtek when i do ipconfig on my pc!
please help!
thanks!

** make sure that you have windows xp pro**
1. download this file onto your pda and run it.
2. make sure that if you are using a router the you open up port 3389... it has to be this port and no other
3. on your desktop goto start/settings/control panel/system/remote and click the box that says "allow users to connect remotely to this computer", that is it you don't need to click anything else
4. open up the program and type in your ip address without the port number then username and password - which must match your windows login and password.

All good advice but this may not work if your office PC is behind a firewall / your office network uses Network Address Translation or you need a VPN to access the network. Give it a go and see what happens but if the IP address of your office PC starts 10.0.0 or 192.168 or similar, it is unlikely to work. You will then have to use a remote access service.

If you're just using 3G/HSDPA you shouldn't have any problems connecting.
If you've got a DSL connection with a dynamic IP address (like mine with Virgin Media) Just register and download the NO-IP software (www.no-ip.com - it's free) then instead of typing in your Ip address on RD you'll put "....no-ip.biz" - or whatever they assign you.
As already stated you HAVE to open up port 3389 on your router and assign it to the relevant pc. This number you will find by entering "ipconfig" in the cmd window. Be aware that if your router gets turned off you could find that the IP address of your computer changes, so you'll have to go back into your router settings and change it to the new ip address for that pc.
I've tested RDP on XP Pro, Media Center 2005 and Vista. I found it to be a little better when the host was a Vista pc - whether this is my imagination or because it is designed with Vista in mind I don't know.

Of course, this only applies if you are not behind a corporate firewall using NAT or other dynamic IP behind the firewall. Also, if it is a corporate network, opening port 3389 may be (a) very difficult to convince your IT dept to do and (b) not very secure!
If one iof the dynamic dns systems works for you, you might try dyndns.org

When I tried to connect to my PC with address 192.168.x.x (or 5.129.252.10)Remote Desktop Mobile return me: Cannot connect.Likely reasons are: 1. The remote computer...
I wonder,what should I do,to make this thing work?
Which IP addres I should use,do I must install Remote Desktop Web Connection from Add/Remove Windows Components/Internet Information Service/World Wide Web Service,...should I forward some ports,NAT,what add in Select Remote User...WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!?
PS I tried with Hamachi!Unsuccessful!Also tried VNC,Logmein
Please help!!!
First of all this forum is actually about HTC telephones and windows mobile.
But to answer your question :
You first need to make sure the router is setup to forward port 3389 (RDP port) to your ip address of the pc which you enabled RDP on.
Next thing to do is check if there is a seperate firewall (software of hardware) which could interfere with communication. Keep in mind port 3389 must be open to accept connections.
As a general rule it is not advisable to post your ip address to the public like this , esp if your posting about RDP, beacuse RDP will open your pc to the world.
Good Luck !
BTW , google is your friend.
Re:
Thanks for the answer,and advice!
I agre! It's not realy smart from me to public my address!!!
But!
I'm desperate(housewife)! )
Do you know, how to forward port on my ADSL modem, and which address i should use?
I tried all this with disabled firewall!
What is with Remote Desktop Web Connection, should I install it?
Googling almost 5 days and nights!
Xda Trion=HTC TyTN
As i don't know ALL ADSL modem in the world , i will try to explain it.
You should not need to install the web connection , this is only needed if you want to make a webpage which has an option to use the RDP inside the webpage.
Most routers/modem have a web interface. You can get into the interface by entering the ip addres of your router into a webbrowser. As you already setup port forwarding for Torrent I thought you already knew how to do this.
Once inside the webinterface , you should look for port forwarding / nat translation or similar. There should be an option to add a port forward.
Add as outside (internet) and inside (your network) port 3389 and TCP as protocol.
Next you need to know your local ip address. You can get this with opening a command prompt and entering ipconfig. The ip addres is usually something like 192.168.x.x (x is a number)....
Add this number to the forementioned line and you should be good to go. Apply the port forwarding (sometimes it's needed to save the settings to get them applied).
Blody Huawei MT882v2.0
Before my current ISP(Telekom Srbija) I use Neobee ISP,and with Neobee I didn't know for port forwarding etc.
Everything was Plug&Play, like it should be!
My torrent work for straight A,DHT status in torrent was green like Greny Smith apple without port forward...Those Were The Days...
On some Serbian forum( http://www.elitesecurity.org ) I find useful( i hope ) thread about port forwarding, and i hope that my Chinese sh.. modem Huawei can handle 2 port forwarding at the time, and also hope i don't screw my formerly port setup!
I write, if success!!!
Thanks P.
go to your router, and click on "port forward" tab.
port: 3389
protocol: both
ip address: 192.168.1.140 (based on your screenshot)
also need to enable "remote" on your Xp or Vista, and must have a user with password logon.
Forward port 3389
I just forwarded port 3389 on my Huawei MT882!
Nothing happened!
All same shi...!
I can't connect to my fuc... PC!!!
Some ideas???

Use LogMeIn free instead i#d say, its really simple to use and much more secure.
LogMeIn
I'v downloaded LogMeIn free,create account,bla-bla...
When I log in,somewhere on the page i read something like... three more try...
What's the catch?

Thanks in advance!
There is no catch I've been using it for over a year with no worries, you might have signed up to try out pro version. But after that's finished will revert to free.

[Q] Help me access my server over the internet

I want to visit this page on my server
http://192.168.2.53:8080/tma/majBtm/androidToDesktop
Since it's a dynamic IP, the above mentioned IP address keeps changing everytime I reset my connection. I replaced the IP with a DynDNS hostname I created
http://tmagrails.dyndns-ip.com/tma/m...droidToDesktop
However, I'm unable to access this page from a remote machine (any machine outside the server's network)
I was asked to forward the port 80 to 8080. I'm unable to do so as there is no port forwarding option in my router page. I use a UTStarcom UT300R2T modem/router.
Is there any workaround for this?
Please advice.

This IP Address is a local-only IP address.
IP addresses in the 192.168.x.x ranges cannot be accessed from the internet.
You need to port forward a particular port on your router, and map that to the internal address. Your router has an external facing IP address, and you need a router that supports DynDns in its control panel.
You can find your external IP via www.whatismyipaddress.com but to get this working you need to be able to setup an incoming port forward, so port 8080 is directed by your router to your PC. The DynDns is currently pointing to
tmagrails.dyndns-ip.com (117.192.174.157)
So you just need to somehow forward all incoming connections to port 8080 onto that desired computer, and give that machine a static IP address on the internal network via DHCP pre-allocation.
