VPN using new T-mobile UK ROM - cant get it to work - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I work in IT and often need to conect to customer sites to resolve issues.
Many of our custoemrs allow me to have VPN access in.
This works a dream from XP PRO.
However I thought I would try and access 2 customers via VPN over WIFI from my MDA PRO which I have just upgraded to the latest T-mobile UK ROM.
I created my 2 connections both use PPTP.
I then tried to connect one of them , holding the stylus over the connection I wanted and selecting connect.
Nothing seems to happen.
Rebooted
tried again the same.
Disabled WIFI and tried over the usb connection and activesysnc, nothing.
How do you know when you are connected.
I removed the password info and tried to connect again.
Exepecting to be prompted for password.
nothing appears on the screen.
no error messages, I would expect to see conenction failed, or a disconnect option once you connect.
Am I missing something.???

I dont think your missing a thing, ive tried it before and never got it working through any connection method. bag of pap as they say

VPN only seems to work over t-mobile 3g not wifi
I can conenct via 3g but not wifi
Seems to be a device limitation

Update
I understand from T Mobile UK this is a problem that their UK partners cannot fix so they have passed it onto T Mobile in Germany who will raise it with their suppliers.
There is no promise of a fix or any idea of timescale

This works fine for me:
1.Set up VPN Connection in connection settings for th server you wish to use
2. - most important - in the advanced tab relating to above under Exceptions you need to enter the IP address of the computer you are trying to connect to
3. Go to Terminal services in Programs and enter the IP address of the cf the computer yo wish to connect to - and press Connect
Hopefully that may work for you
johntheo

What am I missing? Where can you obtain the updated rom from? I cannot find it on the T-Mobile site.

T-Mobile MDA and home wi-fi not working

I just really started playing with my T-Mobile MDA today. It still has the stock firmware from T-Mobile.
When I'm at home I like to turn the phone off and just use the wi-fi on the device. The phone sees my wireless network (802.11b) and I enter my encryption key. The phone connects to my local network and gets a valid IP address. However if I try to use Pocket Internet Explorer to navigate to a web page it never works. It always says "Locating..." and eventually says that it cannot open the page. GPRS works fine.
I have T-Mobile's internet3 APN for my GPRS so I don't use any kind of proxy for it so the trick of having a proxy for GPRS and none for wi-fi won't work for me becuase both have no proxy.
I have Linux as my firewall/gateway system so I told it to show me the packets it's getting from the phone when I try to go to a web page. It looks like the phone is correctly looking for the default gateway and my Linux system responds with what it is. However the phone keeps asking and eventually gives up. It then sends the DNS request to the broadcast address and that will not work so it's unable to resolve any names.
This looks like a pretty serious bug in the software of the phone. I've seen other threads where people mention the same problem but no resolution really. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm guessing my only resolution for this is to try new firmware. This is pretty annoying since this is basic functionality (the low level network stuff).
First is your phone a mda vario = htc wizard or mda = htc wallaby? you may be in the wrong forum but a simple suggestion if it is a mda vario is try it on wifi g mode fix is here (only for vario) http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38898
My phone is the Vario. I actually have a custom ROM that has the enable for 802.11g but I went into the registry and turned that off thinking that was part of the problem because I have an old Netgear access point that is strictly 802.11b. I just tried unplugging the access point and plugging it back in. The phone connected to it for a minute and then suddenly the network went "unavailable." Now it won't connect anymore. This is driving me crazy! I am running the 2.21 custom ROM that's put together by another member here (sorry, I can't remember the name). I wish there was a way to get some diagnostic information from the MDA and maybe I could better see what's going on.
Did it connect with the original rom? and maybe its better to try qtek or imate rom like most of the vario users who have upgraded are using. (which will default to wife b mode)
The original T-Mobile ROM did not work very well either. It continually asked my DHCP server for an IP address and it replied but it just kept asking.
Can you make a ROM recommendation for what you're referring to? I've been through the FTP site here and there are a dizzying array of ROM choices.
Most vario users seem to upgrading to qtek 2.17.7.2 ROM here you can download ftp://xda:[email protected]_2170702_21707102_20710_QTEK_WWE_Ship.exe
user name xda, password xda hope that works for you.
Given that's a generic ROM is there another package that will install all of the US T-Mobile settings?
There are cab's available to install GPRS, MMS settings etc but to be honest it is just as easy to do it manually (many websites give these settings) - I did it with my qtek, came with no settings - did it manually for O2 UK.
I've got the same problem with my home WiFi.
Panera - Good
Starbucks - Good
Home - Not good.
Like the others. I put in the WPA passphrase, connect to the home network, and wait, and wait, and wait....
Now, in some cases I've been able to hard code my ISP's DNS servers into the WiFi card on my MDA and soft reset and presto. Working. But after that if I disconnect the WiFi and go GPRS, doesn't work, because my ISP's DNS servers aren't accessible from the T-Mo (Voicestream) network.
Any help would be good.
In case you've not tried; Setting the Wireless power setting for 'best performance' finally enabled my home connection.

VPN driving me mad!

Over the last year I have tried many times to set up my Windows Mobile devices to connect over VPN and then use RDP to manage my clients' sites. To date I have never managed to get it to work. My config is as follows :-
Within Start \ Settings \Connections \ Advanced \ Select Networks
Programs that automatically connect to the Internet use MY ISP
Programs that automatically connect to a private network "My Work Network"
a VPN is configured under "My work network" and the device can connect to this and using vxutil I can ping the server I wish to RDP to - 172.17.3.3
Supposedly the important bit is to add the exception under "Work URL exceptions", I have added 172.17.3.3 in here.
Once the VPN is established if I enter 172.17.3.3 within IE or Terminal Services CLient the VPN connection is still dropped.
If I enter this IP address without connecting the VPN first then the device will not connect the VPN automatically.
If I enter a non qualified domain name such as ids-vs then the VPN is connected but the name is never resolved.
Can anyone shed any light on this, if I could use a local lmhosts file on the device as with XP then I may be able to work around the above. It appears to me though as though the exceptions list is never processed. I did a hard reset last night just in case, but this has made no difference.
I cannot believe that the above can be so complex.
I am using a HTC Tytn and using t-Mobile in the UK.
Any help greatly appreciated since it is driving me totally mad!
I would love to figure that out.
I was trying to connect to my pc at home like this and suffered from all the same symptoms your having. In the end I gave up, mainly 'cause someone told me that I needed another type of data plan to have vpn (at the time I had the $29.99USD plan) in other words it might be your plan, or something to do with the proxies or something, I hope someone would find out what you need to do in order to get this to work.
It's strange, looking around the web there are loads of people that struggle with the setup, but most seem happy once they are told to add the server name or IP address in the exceptions list.
I have ruled out the data plan since I can establish the VPN connection and can see it authenticate on the other end, as well as being able to ping the server on the work network from the phone.
I have just opened a support call with Microsoft as well, but I am not holding out much hope since I think they will point me at HTC. Assuming HTC ever responded they will just point me back at Microsoft!
Well it would be cool if they could help you, I tried everything myself and zilch. I could also establish a connection but as soon as I would try to access a file on my pc it would disconnect. I would try to help you out experimenting on my side again, but I changed my router to a cheap piece of $h.. and now I can't access my pc via vpn..... I really need to get a decent router
This may sound stupid, but I could swear someone told me something about the speed of the connection. If the connection speed is too low then DNS would fail, although that wouldn't explain why we are able to establish a connection, but not access anything else.
OK, I have made quite a bit of progress :-
1) I was using a cab file to configure T Mobile settings on the phone. This was somehow configuring the exceptions list to be ignored. Hard resetting the phone, installing this CAB the problem remained. Hard Resetting the phone and setting up GPRS manually - everything worked.
2) There is a fault with Windows CE 5 routing over VPN - the subnet information is ignored. Hence for example, if your GPRS provider give you a NAT 10.x.x.x ip address and your corporate network uses 10.x.x.x then you can never route to your corporate network.
And what cab file is that? do you know if it's on the extended roms for the t-mo roms? Glad to see your making progress, keep it up.
It was a Cab file for the Tmobile settings. It either came from these forums or over at modaco, can't remember which.
VPN
I was able to successfully use the Movian VPN to connect to my work using my XDA2.Worked fine for 2 years. Apologies, but I can't help with the settings and my work migrated to an M-notes server so I was able to connect without a VPN.

Same Old WiFi Problem???

Having looked through the forums i'm not alone in this problem?,i have always been able to connect to the internet through my home wireless network and veiw wap sites while out & about, until yesterday i can now no longer connect to my network? All i have done is to configure it so as to be able to browse the web via gprs via a remote server as shown in a thread on this site. That worked a treat but now no wireless access, just keeps connecting but not able to connect. tried various fixes as stated in numerous threads, no joy. put it back to original config still the same. as far as i (novice) can tell it can't get a ip address of my linksys WRK54G router. haven't touched that so doubt if that is at fault. All other laptops in house still able to connect? DOH Any advice would be appreciated. Going to check on brothers network if it can connect? will let you know.
It would help if you post links to whatever advice you followed to change settings, so we would know exactly what you were trying to do.
On a side note we have a linksys router at work (fortunately not on the main network) and sometimes it refuses to let my Jamin connect for no reason until I reset it. (Pulling the power supply does the trick)
I know it is not much of a solution, but worth a shot (router configuration will not be effected) specially if you manage to connect to your brothers network.
Sorry here is link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=269023&highlight=T-Mobile+GPRS.
Also had error message appearing about ip address not being assigned, after/during activesync? fixed this. Could it be related?.
When connecting to network all details show correct in the WiFi settings page, but in the advanced tab ip is 0.0.0.0 and status assigned to network. If i tap renew nothing happens?. Hope this helps tia
Guess you would like to no how i fixed the other problem, "http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.pocketpc/browse_thread/thread/d6df3cc438b9ca5f/8bd321e9d0200967%238bd321e9d0200967?sa=X&oi=groupsr&start=0&num=3"
Have got it working, tried powering down wireless router - no change, thought about a hard reset, not today thanks, tried a soft reset, bingo! it works. swear i had already tried that??, thanks for help great forum.
Oops Must have been a hiccup, was still unable to surf web through WiFi, managed it once then kept getting message unable to connect, check connections. Finally sorted it.
Set up internet connection through my ISP using o2 payandgo details, but with out proxy server info. Kept gprs settings the same in My Work Network.Seems ok after a couple of minutes testing.
If anyone needs the exact settings send me a message and I will post them.

I'm sure you'll get other suggestions to solve this but I have found that sometimes the regular WM5 connection settings get corrupted and it loses the network WEP key. Rather than spend time trying to fix it I use the following freeware download which does it all for you - i.e resolves conflicting IP addresses etc. Only thing you need to enter is your network key. Hitchhiker is designed for those that like to wander about looking for Unencrypted hotspots to log into but it's just as good at logging into work/home networks. It does remember settings and can be set to log in automatically.
The first time I used it, it came up with some error or other but I think I just did a soft reset and it worked fine.
Hitchhiker v0.4 beta 1
• "Summary: "Hitchhiker" helps you to connect your Pocket PC to the wireless Internet. Simply click "Connect" and it will try all nearby public access points. Hitchhiker will handle all settings for you and perform complicated tests to ensure you can connect" (Their words not mine)
Available from
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-hitchhiker-v0-4-beta-1.html
Hitchhiker requires that you have installed:
.NET Compact Framework 2.0 Redistributable
This is obtainable from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6b-356b-4a2c-857c-e62f50ae9a55&displaylang=en. I suggest you install this first.
Whether you choose this possible solution or not, I find Hitchhiker a quick way to connect to networks without putting the settings in yourself and just a useful tool to have.
