Trouble with GPRS connections on EXEC - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

hi everyone, i got my brand new xda exec today..
its a great fone and i like it very much.. but i am having some trouble with my gprs connections.. i have setup the connections as i wud on my late xda II mini.. and the connections seems working just fine wen the are connected automatically for use (like for receiving/sending mms, messenger.. etc) but as i hav a different connection for browsing the internet, because of my operater (damn operator!!!), i had to connect it manually (i did the sam on the mini too) by tapping on the G icon and choosing it from the connectivity bubble which pops up..
but wen it cam to the exec, it doesnt show any connections there, eventhough i already had the two connections from my operator.. it just says, "to connect to either the internet or work, set up a new connection in settings" .. as if i had no connections made..
why doesnt it shows the two connections like it used to show up in my mini :?: i feel its a problem with my fone / OS.. is this how it is in windows mobile 5 :?: if so, is there anyway i can show my connections there in the bubble which pops up wen i tap the G icon :?: any help wud b appreciated.. thanx in advanced..

wont anybody say anything?

still nobody?!? i'm sure there wud b ppl, hu can help me here.. or ppl hu've got the sam problem.. wont anybody just say anything???

I have the exact same problem! A bit stupid how nobody will answer!?? At least tell us if your own one works fine, people!?
I have a feeling that it is a problem with our phones, as I upgraded the ROM to a Qtek and Imate rom but still had same problem. Mine is an Orange SPV M5000 btw.
Hope somebody will take some notice....
cya

No I'm afraid I don't have that either unlike on my BA which did list the connections and a connect to... button.
Perhaps someone (or even I) could write a little program that pops up a list of connections and allows you to connect them.
But why would you want to do this. I too have a different mms and internet connection - just set one to be the default for internet and work (under connections control panel) and tell the mms program to dial the mms connection. Works for me on orange. Do you really need two different cellular connections AND an mms connection?
Pete

Because I want to use GPRS, MMS, and my own VPN Connection..... a bit annoying. Oh well

@appu, you know the bubble you get when you click on the "G" allows you to access a WiFi connection and that is why you get a query about internet/work. Are you saying your SIM has two phone lines, one for calls and one for data? If that is the case I have not seen any one mention this situation before. Would you need to switch off youe device and select the second line?

No No No. You didn't quite understand what I was saying. On my Alpine, when I tap on that bubble I get a connection menu for Wifi, My ISP connection, and my Work Connection. On the Universal, the last two do not appear... I was just wanting to find out if that is the case on EVERY Universal.
No two line business etc!? Don't know where that came from?!
Cya

@moghisi101, you can change the selection of the GPRS/3G connection from start>settings>connections>connections and select "manage existing connections"
Same on the JasJar and XDA Exec

Yes I know, but that seems much more 'involved' compared to what it is supposed to do; show them in that bubble. I think it may be a glitch in WM5. Would be interesting to see if people that have Wizards have same problem.
Cya

all wm5 have this issue.
it is known, there is no fix, and nothing that can be done at this point except follow the directions as indicated.

GPRS/3G connection problem with o2 XDA Excec.

Hi guys,
I'm all new to your forum...
I have the o2 xdII, xdaIIs and now i'm using the xda Exec.
I have a strange problem that even o2 technical support team can't fix...
When i start internet explorer it will connect to either gprs or 3g (whatever is available). when i finish browsing the internet, i just close internet explorer and then close the connection by clicking the disconnect button. Where my problem is, is when i want to reconnect to the internet again (say 5 mins after i close the last connection), i cant get any connection whatsoever. I have a good receiption (gprs and 3g). And i have this weird message :
Dialed: mobile.o2.co.uk
The answering modem has disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings.
So after a lot of talking with o2, i still have this problem.
I have tried to uprgrade to the new rom, and nothing, i have change the settings of the cennection, still nothing. i even changed the handset as i and o2 thought it could have been a faulty handset, but still nothing...
The only solution at the present is to do a soft reset everytime i want to connect to the internet... Its very annoying !!!!
Would annyone have a solution ??? Please ?????
Thank you in advance for your help....
Personally; I wouldn't suggest closing the connection and you won't get charged any extra.
this is easy to fix, but you will lose some software you've got installed.
I had this problem and have worked it out to be conflicts between software that handles the phone line. I had mortring, phonealarm and photo contacts pro installed and my gprs would not reconnect after the 2nd attempt. Putting the phone into flight mode and then back into normal mode would allow gprs to reconnect but only once.
So I uninstalled the above 3 applications one by one and found the gprs would reconnect great with only one installed (any one it didn't matter)
So try removing software that handles the phone line until your gprs reconnect works.

just need some help with 3 problems with the o2 exec

hello all,
problem 1:
recently my exec has been dropping calls just as they connect. signal seems to jump up and down quite frequently and i'm not receiving some messages from abroad and some messages sent abroad don't make it to the receiver either.
that last issue may be a network issue as it seems to only happen randomly but is getting worse.
would a hard reset help much or is something else wrong here?
any insight would be much appreciated.
problem 2:
i want to disable or remove the voice command application that comes built in the exec (cybertronics?), i don't use it but it locks up the phone on odd occasions.
anyway to remove it without some extensive tinkering.
problem 3:
i remember a friend used to be able to connect his ipaq to his pc then run msn messenger on the ipaq (whilst cradled). is this possible with the exec as it doesn't seem to get a good wifi signal unless i'm right next to the wifi router.
i would have had a 4th problem but i just got AS working finally and jeyo mobile companion to go with it Very Happy
again, any help with any of these problems would be much appreciated.
regards,
haji.
having the same problem with signal. If i was in a location with no signal and i move to a location with good signal, the phone does not seem to detect this change. I have to reset the phone for it to get signal. so disapointed.... just sharing, sorry, ive got no solution.
For problem 3:
If you right click on ActiveSync icon in your system tray (version 4.2 not sure where the option i is on older versions) and choose "Connection Settings..." then there is an option which says:
"This computer is connected to:" and my copy was defaulted to "My work network", changing this to "The Internet" allows me to browse the internet using my computers internet on my XDA Exec.
I think this is what your friend would have been doing.
Regards
G
thanks gquipster! i'll try that out.
raffy, i've switched the phone over from 'auto' to gsm, that seems to have improved signals and i don't lose txts anymore. when set to auto it keeps trying to find the best 3g connection (i think).
if you don't need the 3g connection then try this:
start > settings > phone > band tab > change network type box from 'auto' to 'gsm'
i hope that helps a bit mate.
still got problem 2 to go then, any takers?

The battle for wifi

Hi guys. If you don't remember me - here's my story in a nutshell. I got a 8525 about a week ago. Since day one I tried and tried and tried but never managed to get the wifi working... (as you can imagine I am beyond desperate at this point)
Anyway last night I got thinking and decided to give it another stab. I hard reset, messed with the settings again...and this time manage to get a little further. My phone is now showing me as "connect to network", only problem is I get a message saying "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change connection settings, tap Settings." each time I try to access anything internet related. I know I'm close especially since I'm actually connected now, I think it's just AT&T's rom doing everything it can to get me to use their networks (I'm on T-Mobile and don't have a dataplan anyway...).
Anyway can you guys think of what the problem might be? I'm so close I can taste it! Thanks.....
Bump... Anyone home?
where did you get your 8525? my wifi on my 8525 works perfectly fine, have u tried upgrading to WM6?
I have WM6 already. I got it off ebay. Everything is perfectly fine with it, it just doesn't want to use the wifi connection to get online.
Try a hard rest.
my 1st 8525 i got off ebay, and it worked great up until a few weeks ago, when the screen stopped functioning it just turned white, i called AT&T and they sent me a new 1 i just got it this morning and now, i cant make calls >.> it will ring then my phone will say i have no service when i have full service and the call will end. but my wifi is fine... did u use the WM6 upgrade that was released by AT&T
No thanks re: the hard reset. I've already done that... If I can't figure this out I'm going to sell my phone and steer clear of ppc phones. I like it, but I bought it for wifi and this is just getting ridiculous. I have tried everything. I've spent hours and hours on this. I've reset my router god knows how many times, played with security settings, reset my phone over and over to start over.....
The worst part now is that I know it's connected. The wifi aspect is fine. It's just the stupid phone not wanting to use the wifi connection for the internet.
Maybe someone with a 8525 and a Linksys router can post ALL of their wireless related settings for me.
Ekh
Yes I used the AT&T update.....
i use wifi and my linksys router, the 8525's range isnt that great u need to be within a few feet of the router to get good reception, im about 30 feet from mine and i get 2 Wifi signal bars and an ok speed. but try this
Start > Programs > Proxy Manager > Disable Proxy
then try to use your wifi, then go back and restore the proxy when your done, i think some 1 told me to do that because att uses that so u can use their internet service or sumthin
Thanks but I'm way ahead of you. I've already tried every piece of advice I've come across on xda. My last hope is someone elses detailed settings.
is your network passworded by a WEP or TKIP ?
It's WPA... My device has the password, and I added the MAC to my router table. It's connecting to the router/wifi...
...it's just that my device won't use the connection
* Sigh * Looks like another one of my please help me posts has gone dead...again...

Your problem may be one of the following:
1. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "work" and programs are set to use an internet connection.
2. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "internet" and programs are set to use a work connection.
Nope that's not it. But it does remind me of something so thanks. I deleted all the connections seeing as I don't have a dataplan... I made a new connection called "Wifi". BUT, it's not like I can specify any connection for it so it's just blank (no connection specified). By this I mean the options for a connection are:
bluetooth, cellular line, cellular line (GPRS, 3G), Generic IrDA, Hanes...COM1. No option for wireless...
Does that help?
Check that your router is set to allow connections by devices with 802.11b, which the Hermes uses. Most default to 802.11g only.
It's set for b and g
Helloooo...?
Hallelujah!!!!!
People, I have WIFI!!!
Thanks to everyone who tried to give a helping hand... It's really appreciated.
For future reference to those who are suffering from the same problem - this is what seemed to fix it... I entered google into IE via it's IP address rather than it's name (open command prompt, ping google.com...). To my surprise the page quickly loaded. I then instantly realized that the problem was with the DNS settings. I opened up "Wi-Fi" in settings, went to the "Network Adapters" tab at the bottom and entered in the DNS addresses for "IEEE 802.11b/g...". If you need help with this just PM me (I consider myself somewhat of an expert on this topic now).
I thought I was never going to get online. There IS a god!

When on WIFI tytyn STILL dial GPRS..Why?

Hey,
I have my tytn set to check emails every 5 minutes using my homes wifi connection. My problem is every once in a while i'll look to find GPRS has connected... this is really annoying me, as i don't know then if email is being checked using wifi or GPRS which costs. MAINLY though bcause I don't know WHY it is doing it.
In connections, my top selection is CONTRACT INTERNET which holds my gprs connection settngs and the bottom one is my work network. the slightest change in either of these STOPS INBOX from checking over wifi giving me an ';error synchronsing message;'
Can anyone tell me WHY my tytn persists with this?
thank you
hey, well incase anyone is reading and looking for a short term fix, UNTICKING the remember password box in gprs settings means if it attempts to dial, it CAN'T connect without the password being ntered. not ideal, but it at least stops any nasty surprises when you don't expect them
I had the same issue with WM 5. After upgrading the device to WM 6 this problem was solved for me.

Orange 3G - stopping GPRS ?

Hi
Just got an Orange 3G. One annoying feature is that if it drops a WiFi connection it goes automatically to using GPRS without any indication (which thens starts to cost !!!)
Orange say you can't stop this happening. Does anyone know any trick to stop this (there is no way to keep the GPRS off as there was on my old Touch)
Be grateful for any help
As I said to the person who asked the same question a few days ago *sigh*, google nodata

You need to check how your phone is connecting.
AFAIK the orange ROM uses the unique manager not the normal HTC connection manager.
This means you dont really have a WiFi connection. Orange unique is their VOIP(??) implementation.
If you have a livebox and orange as your ISP your phone will automatically switch to using your WiFi connection for phone calls saving you money, the downside is you cant use wifi for anything else.
The only way to sort it is buy flashing a different ROM.
Orange Unique ----http://www.business.orange.co.uk/services/broadband/unique-for-business/
Hi
Thanks for the info. Been trying to sort out with Orange and same answer - disable GPRS and the WiFi stops as well !!! (One of the Orange guys even admitted that it was because they don't make money on voice now, only data). The 'nodata' fix doesn't work as it also stops the WiFi. Any thoughts on which ROM I might flash?
Thanks for your help
I'm actually an Orange employee, working for Handset Faults, and looking to solve this for a customer.
There is a rom update available from HTC, which apparently fixes this, however the customer I'm trying to resolve this for, has tried updating and his serial number shows as no available ROM.
I don't think the No-data resolution will work, so hoping if theres any other solutions you guys could suggest?
I know on my current HS, which is a Hermes, I've the communication manager, which i believe isn't available on the Touch 3G, unless debranded.
Really, I'm just trying to get more advice, so would appreciate anyone's tried and tested work-around, as i've to call said customer back tomorrow, with hopefully a resolution, but if not, then he'll have to wait till a ROM update becomes available from HTC/Orange for branded handsets.
I found a solution to this problem last night that works for me on my Touch 3G with Orange.
Enter Unique Manager - Advanced Settings - Network Adapter - My Network Card Connects to - and ensure they're all set to connect to The Internet.
I have also setup a Block GPRS connection under Settings - Connections - Conections which stop GPRS connecting and can now connect via Wifi no problem.

Thanks for this - going to give it a try but when i go into Settings - Connections for the second part of your fix, where do I go next (I can't find Conections which stop GPRS connecting)
Thanks
Thanks Bob,
Will copy this and put it on my phone somehow!
Thank you very much for the advice!

Did you manage to make it work?

Unfortunately, the customer cancelled their upgrade and got another handset before trying this.
Shame really!
Thanks for the help though!

Still haven't been able to work out the second part of the fix - can you help?
Thanks
I've no suggestions tbh, cause I don't own a Touch 3G, I personally run a Hermes.
I'm actually trying to follow this up, and check what Bob meant by blocking GPRS on it.
Also, would you chaps be so kind to advise me if GPS under the HTC Touch 3G uses GPRS to connect, or does it use Satelittes like a normal GPS?
Just another question my customer asked today.
Thank you,

The GPS will use the satelitte to get a signal (just like proper SatNavs), but if there's an A-GPS feature, it will use a tiny bit of GPRS to speed up the process.
It'll then use the GPRS (if enabled) to download maps for the local area if it there isn't a map already installed on the handset.
That's why it's always a good idea to disable GPRS when roaming, at £8/mb- it's a pricey thing to use.
However, you can normaly download maps using WiFi before you leave (if you know where you'll be going), which will save time and money on using the network for data.
I get asked that question alot too (I work for them too, in NT1- First Impressions)
It will use the GPRS for the GPS locator if you leave A-GPS selected. Fortunately you can disable A-GPS to stop this happening.
Interestingly, I can't find any real difference in the speed of 'finding' satalites between standard GPS and A-GPS.
Thanks for the advice guys.
So any ideas how to fully block GPRS traffic outgoing, unless wanted? So its WIFI only when my customer is at home?
No further movement on this one...
Anyone got any ideas, how to utilise the WIFI facility switching the Unique Phone part off, and blocking GPRS traffic?
Thank you,
NoData works on fone.......BUT
Hi I got my touch 3g couple days ago its on orange contract brilliant fone apart from cannot connect to wifi as you all know it still connects thru gprs so I downloaded Nodata installed on fone disabled gprs with it. So good so far switched on wifi thru unique manager then checked that data connection was still off and it was BRILLIANT I shouted.
My wifi was connected to my hub and data connection was off woo hoo
Started web browser and lo an behold Get the message "cannot connect with current connection settings"
As far as I am led to believe at the present time there is no way round this problem apart from installing a clean version of windows but if I am mistaken please tell me how to get around this problem.
Cheers Biggles
HTC touch Dual An a HTC touch 3G
I have the Touch 3g with Orange - but thanks to the guys on this forum I got rid of the Orange branding/mess by using a 'stock' rom and I am not now using Orange Unique. Then I did the following........but not sure if it works with the Orange Unique stuff.
As far I as I can see there is no explict way of turning GPRS off - if it is set up then it will connect to it when a program requests data. I have unlimited internet on my home network but I need to turn GPRS off when roaming abroad so I don't get charged silly amounts.
I found that the only way I can guarantee to stop the phone using GPRS is to change the name of the Access Point Name - then it cannot connect to the service. On my phone (a Touch 3g) it is under Settings, Connections, Connections, Manage Existing Connections - then edit the connection details. On mine it is Orange Internet - so edit this and get to the Access Point Name - which is orangeinternet in my case - i just take away a few letters at the end and save the settings.
At this point GPRS will not work because the Access Point Name is not correct and you will get a message from any program trying to access the internet if wifi is not enabled. To get it to work again just edit the Access Point Name back to what it was. In my case I do not have to switch the phone off/on - I can just change the Access Point Name at anytime and it works or dosn't as I require.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
With Orange Unique there isn't any "Manage Existing Connections" that I can find - just addding new modem or VPN? Am I in the right place?
Thanks
for the benefit of people who may be subscribed to this thread, I think I have found a fix for the orange rom using data connection instead of wifi, read on here:-
