3G Signal

I have been using my new o2 Exec in many different cities in the UK but not once have I been able to use 3G.
1) How would I know I am connected to 3g as I only see the GPRS symbol.
2) Has anyone used this device in 3G?
If the device is connected to a 3G signal, the network name would appear as 3G O2 - UK instead of just O2 - UK.
Also the little "G" would change to a "U"
I have a 3G signal on O2 in London a lot. A very strong signal at Waterloo and I even have one at home in Camberley (Surrey). The Vodafone 3G signal in Camberley/Farnborough is very good.
I get 3G at home (Didcot) and have also elsewhere (eg Reading, Sheffield, various parts of London). Don't get it at my workbase, but that is in a rural Oxfordshire location.
Other 3G service at home are 3 and Orange. No sign of any 3G signals from Vodafone or T-Mobile.
The only time I have even tried, West End of London and I had a U signal with Orange... just no-one else with a Video capable phone to call...
Well it must mean they have given me a GPRS SIM because at the time I was asked do I want a 3g or GPRS connection - which I found strange.
I have not had 3g reception in Leeds, Oxfordshire.
3G SIM's usually (in my country) have a BIG "3G" on them. Check. Can't believe you;ve never seen a U if you do have a SIM.
3G SIM's usually (in my country) have a BIG "3G" on them. Check. Can't believe you;ve never seen a U in the UK if you do have a SIM. I'm in darkest Africa and have UMTS almost wherever I go... (OK, for busines that is - not much need for it when watching lions)
Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but have you checked the device settings to make sure that it is not locked to GPRS?
Settings, Phone, Band tab.
I leave this set to auto most of the time unless the phone has a borderline 3G signal and keeps switching from 3G to GPRS all the time.
If you find that this is greyed out, hold down the reg 'end call' button until it 'un-grays' its self ;-)

Dopod Trinity in Toronto

Hi, i currently live in toronto, canada, and i use rogers as my provider. when i put my sim card (from rogers) and turn on the phone, the phone says that it the network cannot find something (provider i think), and i should update my software. it then takes me to the "network connections" where i choose my country, and my provider. i notice that Canada is not in that drop down box. can someone please tell me how i can go about choosing Canada, or do i have to flash with a modded firmware instead of an original firmware? please answer!

Same thing happened here, I live in Brazil and it is not in the drop down list. I just choose dismiss (or something like that) as soon as the first message appears, followed by "do now show message again" (or smth like that).
Been using the phone without any problems so far.
oh yea? ok t hats cool. do you think you can help me out then..
i dont understand what 3G EDGE GPRS are.. like because im with the provider, i do not want to be charged more than just calling people.
when i plug in my sim card, do you know what is supposed to be displayed on the top of the dopod, near the Signal strength?
and could you tell me what each of those three mean? thankss

Answer:
3G-Video calling using the secondary camera (which we can't use yet in canada)
EDGE- Basically high speed data transfer (since you are with rogers, I believe there are data plans that support that feature)
GPRS-Never use it, cuz it charges on your airtime using the towers

ok, then normally if i dont want to be charged with anything other than having signal strength and making calls, what normally shows near the signal strength? i guess my question really is: if i dont want EDGE, 3G or UTMS or anything, what should i be seeing beside the signal strength?

You can call Rogers and tell them you don't want any data services, then you should see a X icon right beside your signal strength level...
Ok when i put it in it says:
Network Wizard
Your current operator (30272) is not supported. You should obtain an update from your device vendor.
Would you like to select another network provider?
I want to put canada in it.. if anyone knows how to do it please post!!

Oh really?? Is that the 3G will be available to all Canada customers or just a few cities only?
But I cannot see this announcement in the Rogers website though.

I'm running original HTC WM5 firmware with the GPS it works great on Rogers =/
3G was available in Toronto since early 2007, but at the prices Rogers charges, they can go and **** themselves with a large steel pipe.

i called fido, and apparently (the perosn on the phone told me) that one of the two (3G or EDGE) is not charged. he said something about a price/kb for one of the two, and that the other one doesnt have a charge..

Agreed. I disabled all data way back when I had a regular phone. I kept getting random data charges when I never loaded my browser so I just disabled it. Anyway, I get the 3G logo, however, I haven't tested out the transfer rates or anything like that. I don't know if you can boost the signal or anything, I manage to make calls (which are surprisingly perfectly clear) with 1 bar.
I get the Edge logo on my phone in vancouver. I do know that they charge for Edge usage here and there was a big promo for unlimited Edge usage for about $40 bucks per month posted on craigslist.com. I know 3G network has been built, but probably a few good years before it's affordable to use.

Help me with a symbol in status bar

A new symbol has begin to show on my phone. Its the triangle shaped one in the top of the screen. To the right of the text "TELIA S Telia".
Anyone who knows what the symbol means?
normally that means that your X1 is in Roaming - that you are using another operator than you default operator.
i have this symbol all the time, while i am driving through Germany or Italy and logged in to one of my home-network's roaming partners
While using 3G in Sweden you can be on another operators net without extensive charges. They have a roaming agrement because they use oneanothers cell stations, e.g Telia - Tele2. The problem is that WM sees it as roaming and displays it as such.

Not that I know of, except turning off 3G and only use GPRS.
Anyway, it's only the symbol thats annoying, unless you use some program that prevents data connection when roaming. The price is still the same.
Every time I go abroad I turn off the automatic update features of these programs.

Turning of Roaming completely

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

Dave

[Q] How to disable roaming indicator?

I have tried to search a lot for a solution both on xda and google, but couldn't find an answer.... is there a way i can get rid of the roaming indicator ("R" just above the signal bars)?? I am on a roaming location but the data on roaming is at home rates for me... but due to this R sign, i'm unable to see whether i'm on 3G or 2G...

Is there any MOD/CUSTOM ROM which supports the possibility to have 2 indicators (1 for signal strength, 1 for data connection) like it is done for HTC Sense or Samsung Touchwiz?
