Fixing speaker and downgrading ROM from WM 5.0 to 2003 - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

First of all I've been picking my XDA2 up, to put it in the cradle, by the speaker since everywhere else on it seems to be either buttons or touch-screen, now the plastic cover bit's got pushed in and I need to get into it to push it back. I'm assuming I need those star shaped allen key things and if I do then what should I ask for in a shop, what size and whatever their special name is?
And also, I'm planning on selling this phone to my cousin soon enough but he doesn't know much about computers and whatnot and I know that he'd prefer to have it as it's meant to be in case he needs support. Is it simple to put the old ROM back in after the upgrade, would it just be a case of backing mine up and then installing it back afterwards? I'd love to fiddle round and install WM5 on this phone, would like the persistent memory feature. And one little thing, what's the risk factor of ROM swapping like, I read somewhere that there's a chance I may just be left with a plastic brick of spare parts.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, but where in freakin hell do I get that plastic stick thing? I'm assuming they won't sell it at the O2 shop.

Replacing Screen + frame

Hi,
Broke my screen a couple of days ago. I have a lot of information and programs installed on my universal and dont want to install everything again.
I have therefore bought a used universal and I wonder If I will be able to replace the screen + frame without hardresetting the unit. I have downloaded the service manual but I couldnt find any info regarding that. If any one have any useful tips on replacing screen + frame plaese let me know. Do I have to take the phone apart or is it possible to replace screen and frame only by loosing the screen by the hinge?
Is this a difficult task, (looks easy in the manual)?
Thanks in advance,
Miki
Just need the right tools. Not too difficult and you need an antistatic arm band. Goodluck! How bout selling me your extra mainboard?
first post here but i just found the site.
I broke the screen on my o2xda exec and took it too my local Carphone Warehouse. I am not one of their customers anymore but they looked the repiar up on their system and it showed that the repair cost was going to be £40. I authorised repair and got a written copy of the cost and confirmed the cost about 10 times as i didnt belive him. The phone went off to HTC's repair centre and came back three weeks later with a new screen and a complete upgraded rom. I paid £40 job done.
Might be worth a try if you have one near you.
No prob.
All parts will be for sale as soon as Im ready.
Is it possible to switch screen with frame without hardreseting?
And is it possible to switch screen without taking the phone apart?

There is a way to just open up the just screen part of the clamshell but you risk breaking your flex cable but it can be done if you are really careful. I dont recommend doing it this way though.
I suggest you follow the instructions as per manual by opening up the keyboard part first and then clamshell then replacing the screen. It's not too difficult. Don't forget the anti-static thing so you don't mess up the mainboard.
Also, you don't have to hardreset to replace your screen..dont forget the anti-static thing!
Please reserve the mainboard for me...Thanks!
I wouldnt mind the flex cable!
Its easiest to leave this in the plastic housing, thus most of the actual shell (top lid, hinge, bottom keyboard housing part etc.
Let me know if you have this spare as my touchscreen doesnt work now and im desperate!
I'd be interested in the camera flash (flashlight)
IF/when you're ready to part out the remainder of your device, I'm in desperate need of a replacement camera flash (flashlight).
-Kevin.
Please let us know how your replacement went. Still would like to purchase that MB from you.

'hope this'll help you guyz
you'll only need a small torx screwdriver (like the one all cell phones use), a small " X " screwdriver, a small flat screwdriver and a whole bag of skills ;-)
nice link!
Selling parts?
So will you be selling the parts? Interested in your extra mainboard. You can email me at clemsynatcharterdotnet.
Thanks
Sorry for the delay.
The screen replacment worked without any problem.
If any of you still are intrested in parts, let me know.

Wizard Repair Guide?! Mines Broken :(

Hey Guys,
Well, I'm a bit gutted really! I dropped my XDA Mini S on the floor with the charger in and the connector IN the phone has come apart from inside the phone. The little metal bit is practically hanging out. I'm wondering, if i were to take the phone apart could i re-connect the little part? (I have a soldering iron if thats as simple as its going to be?)
Just wondering if anyone had any guides on how to take the phone apart and take a look at whats wrong?
Any help would be so much appreciated!
Many Thanks,
Tom
The service manual is hosted on the ftp site.
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Wizard/Docs_Tutorials/
Hope this helps.
I suspect you probably broke the socket off, but if you have a soldering iron, you might as well try to get a new mini USB connector to work with.
You might try Pocket PC Techs:
http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~UTStarcom_XV6700-554~area~repairs~item~REP-USBCON01~name~UTStarcom+XV6700+Mini+USB+Connector+Replacement+Service.htm
I rang them up about an issue I had (screen on the fritz) and they seemed pretty knowledgeable and helpful.
Alternatively there's a company I found today in the UK. I can't vouch if they're good or not.

Good luck.
Well I also have an issue with my wizzard... the mini jack connector (of the handsfree) is a bit loose.
What I am saying is that it does have a good connection with the rest of the circuit and sometimes the sound of the speaker goes off, then I have to insert the habdsfree and tickle it a little bit until it has a good contact.
? have some basic soldering experience,do you think I should give it a try?
Given my device has been apart too many times for me to admit to I thought I'd crack it open to take a pic for you guys. Not sure if this pic will help for those wanting to do some soldering:
Very large pic: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/216/452691530_f47801708f_o.jpg
Excuse the dust.
Ah! That picture at the bottom is exactly what I needed. The metal but at the bottom (the big sqaure) has totally sheared off....bloody thing. Thanks so much for the info on the repair guides. I may give those repair guys a call if i can't get it to work myself.
Thanks alot you guys
As for you WizeMan, it all depends on if you wish to void your warrenty or not. At the end of the day, I installed WM6 on my device so O2 would give me the finger if i tryed to claim. If I'm honest, I'm getting an upgrade next month so I'm not to bothered if I balls it up! Would be nice if I got it working though....

Let me tell you my news, my friends.
I opened my Qtek 9100 and fixed two serious issues regarding this phone, using... sponge (the one we use to wash the dishes)
1. I put some into the stylus socket (from the thin space it has) and also
2. On the top of the mini jack socket so when i assembled the housing it blocked it from moving (2 of the contacts are no more soldered and i dint have a soldering iron at that time)
Anyway, both operation went ok and my phone is more than fully functioning. Now the stylus is hardly (in a good way) comming out (it first gets longer then comes out).
I wanted to do also the safe singal fix, but didnt find the photos to apply it correclty, so if someone has them, please give link. If you need any info about the "Sponge" Hacks, just post or pm

I'm still trying to get the a new fascia and will probably shove an eraser bit into the stylus spring mechanism to ensure the defect never happens. Also how did you discover the break in the solder joints on the headphones jack? I have a funny situation where the left channel of the headphones doesn't work but I suspected the headphones (the plug has to be pulled at an angle to get any sound out of the left) but now I am thinking it may be the socket itself.
By the way the reception fix pic doesn't load for me either but I unless you truly need it, don't waste your time doing it; I always have all 4 bars and sometimes have 2 bars.

Allright here is the deal.
1. I found out the break in the soldier joints when i opened it. I was really suspicious about it because when i inserted my headphone jack into the connector, i had problem with the contact; the connector was loose and it muted my phones speaker. When i disassembled the phone using the service manual i saw with my eyes that the the joins where f-ed up.
2. I dont really need the signal hack i just wanted to experiment, i have 2.25.11 cingular radio rom and its great.
Btw i suppose you should better use the sponge, because the rubber may wear off but not the sponge...
Thanks for the tip on the sponge. I am going to grab a used but allegedly "like new" body from eBay and also get one of those covers as well.

Taking the MDA Apart?

hey i have the tobile MDA and i just wanted to know if anyone has any information about taking it apart because after a while ive gotten stuff in to the slider and i just wanna clean it a bit.. can anyone help me?
Google 'prodigy service manual', that should be what you're looking for.
Be very careful - I managed to snap the little lever that fits into the slider by not being careful when putting the motherboard back in. You might not have to remove yours, but bear it in mind.
wait wat little lever? cause theres this little peive sticking out of the top of my fone where it slides and its been bugging me thats part of the reason i want to take it apart
the manual is available in my signature
i also broke my volume slider taking it apart to do the stylus fix

MDA DEAD!!!!!

Well ladies and jerks, I regret to inform you that my MDA is completely dead. I was in a car accident the other day and it went flying through the air and when I grabbed it off the floor of my car the USB charge plug was loose and had trouble connecting to the computer but still worked. Since then I had put a drop of super glue in there to hold the plug still and everything was fine untill this morning. My phone was left off with no battery in it untill the glue dried and still, everything was fine.
Now this morning when I went to grab my phone it was completely frozen and had 1% of battery life left so I soft reset and plugged the phone in and it was charging fine. I connected it to the computer and it would not connect at all. Now after playing with the cable a bit to get it to connect to the computer, the charge port is completely dead. It will not even let it charge with the charger and the little silver piece inside the plug is falling out.
Does anyone here have any idea what I should do to save my Wizard? I fear it may be the end for it.
Here's the big problem though. My device is CID unlocked and still has the TNT.1437 firmware on it so my warrenty is completely void. T-Mobile will not send me a handset exchange like this.
hi
t-mobile wouldn't send you a warranty replacement even if you had the official windows mobile on it. that is because, after you read the terms and conditions of the warranty, it does not include and in fact states quite clearly that 'excessive' use of the usb cable resulting in damaged charging port will not be replaced.
i realise this is not very helpful, so allow me to be helpful!
download the wizard service manual, if you PM me your email address i can email you a copy of one
what you will have to do is first obtain a new mini usb port from ebay or somewhere similar, i will try to hunt one down in america for you
following the service manual, you need to dismantle your handset, use some sort of rubbing alcohol (nail varnish remover) to get rid of the super glue you put on, first try to re-solder the old connector back onto where it came, or if not solder on the new one after removing the old one.
to be honest, you dont have anything to lose, but you could gain a working mda again!
good luck, and just a disclaimer to say im not responsible for any damage done to yourself, your device or anything else.

hi
so sry to hear about ur accident and damaged MDA
t-mobile will certainly wont give u warranty replacement. It happened with me once also and only way out was ,I took it to a mobile repair shop and got the usb connector replaced for very nominal price.
duke_stix is right, get a mini usb and solder it. If u can do it,very well or take it to a techy to do it properly.
Once it's repaired it will be as good as new, goodluck

Good advice except don't use rubbing alcohol, it damages plastic. Use adhesive remover instead. (At my hospital we use little adhesive remover wipes similar to the alcohol prep pads.) We are told to use this method when cleaning adhesives from plastics and it works.

Thanks. Have you had any luck trying to find a service manual? I have been looking but with no success...
Well I managed to find a wizard service manual written in English for the US and got my MDA taken apart correctly without damaging it(I hope) only to find that all 9 contacts for the USB port are completely severed. Unfortunately I don't have the soldering skills to fix this on my own and there are no local repair shops where I can get it fixed seeing as how I am also out of a car...(see first post) so I am back to a Razr... UGH.... Anyways, I will remain an active member of the community and continue to help others with issues they may be having and help others flash roms because I found that I enjoy helping others.
I will, however, be leaving for a period of time in a few months because I am being deployed and most likely will not be returning with a Wizard but an HTC TyTN II. Don't worry though, I won't forget my friends back here in the Wizard forum( I know too much about these things to just pack up and leave now...)
Hi
sry to hear that,
But just another idea popped in my mind,if u can manage to get mini usb port than u can take it to any electronics repair shop, like tv,radio or any pc repair shop,it can be soldered, since u say u have the service manual u can show them the circuit layout, they can fix it.
yet,if u happen to have any sort or make of mobile (Motorolla,Nokia, samsung) which is pretty old and spent,of which u got no use,c if it has a mini usb port, usually every mobile does have it,and it has 9 connectors, take it out and get it soldered to ur mda.
Well, since its gonner, there's no harn in trying,

Thats a good idea, but I will probably just end up buying a new one off ebay for my girlfriend and play with hers all the time and then I already bought a TyTN II for myself.
Thanks.

First and Foremost,
Thank you sir, for answering the call of your nation. This American & his family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.
In my ancestral culture's view, a patriot is second only to Saints & the Lord himself. May God watch over you & your team members.
I HAD to tell you that because every serviceman needs to know just how much Americans honor and cherish you!!!
(NEVER pay attention to the liberal media, they are sick diseased haters & hypocrites who are lucky to live in a land where they are allowed to lambast & denegrate those who are truly honorable.)
About your wizard, there are several ways to connect electronic components these days. If an adhesive was used, forget about it. If it was truly soldered, nothing can be easier! You can do it yourself (make sure to get a bulb vacuum for removing old solder and a modern soldering gun). It is so easy, in fact, that a authorized repair facility may do it for you for cheap! And you could always mail it to them, too.
Good Luck & God Speed dharvey4651.
similar problem?
My MDA will charge fine through the USB cable, but will not sync/connect -- it's not even appearing in Device Manager.
Does anyone know if this is definitely a hardware issue, presumably involving the USB port?
Thanks in advance,
Will Stewart
it is possible, your USB cable has problem or try another PC.

Dissasembling the HTC 8125 (Cingular version in preticular if it matters)

First, I would like to say ello!!!
Anyway ^.^ I recently aquired a Cingular branded HTC 8125, and was wondering if anyone had a good disassembly guide(or even a bad one really) for it. The one I got has a few.... bugs. Some of which I should be able to fix... Some of which... Well ^.^'
Actually isnt the first PDA type device I've opened up... I even have the nessary tools within reach atm ^.^'' Just always nicer to know where the delicate ribon cables, or randomly held together by plastic tabs/glue spots are when going into something like this...
Anyway. Oi!
check out the service manual available from the wiki it gots the disassembaly guide its preety straight forward nothing hard to it just make sure u dont lose the screws and dont break the tabs.
Thanks, didn't notice it there.
Just a note that should probably go up somewhere, the Cingular 8125 has a slight variance to its disassembly when you get to removing the main PCB, it has a sqrew holding it down near the middle of the board that the version of the wizard that document was for lacks.
Other than that very educational. And got rid of the horrible screen corruption when the face plate buttons are pressed. Completely. ^.^' Stupid loose ribbon cables.
