Will magician ever be upgraded to WM5?any chances? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

hi there
I know it's WM5 upgrade not available right now but I was just wondering that if it'll ever be possible that mini would be upgraded to WM5.Is it possible or mini doesn't meet the hardware requirements of WM5?your ideas?

Read the forums This was discussed all over the place!

However
You can always hope, especially as teh o2 atom specs ate similar.
I get mine hopefully next week when I am over in China.

Nope, never, jamais, nunca, nie, никогда, nooit, ποτέ, mai.

I hope that you are aware that Magician and o2 atom are not only different devices, BUT ALSO FROM DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS.
I will not be so naive to hope for WM5 on Magician, instead I hope for a nice brandnew WM5 device under the christmas tree. This hope is more likely to become true

Oh, another one!
  BWAAA HAA HAA HAAA HAAAA HAAAA
Sorry, but I find people who ask this funny!

Especially because WM5 is absolutely uninteresting. It has been very slow on almost any new devices and the "nomore backups" issue isn't important to most of us people since we know how to make good backups - don't we?

I think WM5 is interessting! Not because of the Backup-Options.
Look here:
http://mobile-review.com/pda/articles/wm2005-1-en.shtml
The Outlook Contacts for example are _much_ better in WM5.
You see the Contact's full name _and_ the numbers and calling is so much easier!

Hate to sound like a newbie (which I am, just got my Mini/Magician today and first post to the forum), but according to some websites (http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_xda_atom-1372.php), looks like the new Atom will use the same processor as the Mini? Only difference is 128MB ram and possibly wifi (although another thread is debating that issue).
Wouldn't that be reason enough to expect a way to install Atom's WM5 to the Mini?

Stupy, the problem is not just the processor type. The OS has to interface with all the hardware on your device such as Camera, BT chip, WiFi, Screen, etc. All of these require "drivers" that have to be written specifically for your hardware.
Unfortunately WM5 on the Magician is almost impossible. Unofficial upgrades for other devices occured simply because M$ and/or carriers were testing the new OS on these devices and the ROM got leaked. Now that the testing is over who do you think will take his time and effort to develop this interface for free??? And that's providing he/she has the necessary resources.
At this point the only way to upgrade to WM5 is to sell your device and get a new one :-( I will probably go for the 02 XDA Atom or HTC Prophet fairly soon.
(btw, I really really hope someone proves me wrong )

look at this link
http://www.shinyshiny.tv/2005/12/pink_pda.html
the specs are almost identical to xda2mini except for the 128mb, does this mean there is still hope that wm5 would still be possible for mini?

No. How may times does it have to be said. Read the post immediately before yours.
It's not going to happen.

Thanks kta for sorting that out. I just got the Mini, so it'll be a little while before I get the Atom - they don't sell too many of these types of phones here in Canada. No matter, I'll be happy with what I've got. Cheers!

WM2005 for Magician?

Are there any plans from distrubutors of the Magician to release WM2005?
Or is will be there any unofficial release like on the Himalaya?
As it was written probably A MILLION TIMES in this forum:
NO, there are no plans to offer WM2005 officially on Magician.
NO, currently there are no known plans of some unofficial source to offer WM2005 on Magician.
HOWEVER: When WM2005 comes for Magician, you could easily find the information using the SEARCH function of this board.
BTW: What do you need WM2005 for? Is it so much better? Has it less bugs than mature WM2003SE?
Didnt mean to hit a nerve there, was just a simple question...
Even if we found a way it would be a pain in the *ss cos it wouldn't fit in the amount of ROM. Face it: the Magician is too small!
The Qtek S110 is a different story tho...
it will fit, as W2005 will be released for Dells and HPs with same ROM size(64MB)
Hoping somebody will cook it for magician

I hope you made same brilliant remark to all the HTC Typhoon users?? who will never ever recieve a official w2k5 rom! but are all playing with w2k5 now. It is very well possible that HTC has already made a rom available with w2k5 we don't know it's up to the providers to release it for the magician, but I guess your right they never will. Maybe next time it's more helpfull to say nothing then to point someone out the search function, because this i a forum for a bunch of wackos who try to do the impossible with their phones hehe
I'm waiting for the next Magician sized device with WM5.0, so far the only thing I've heard about is the ETEN m600 (or was it 700).
It will happen soon enough when the next devices become available. I don't see them releasing it on this one though. There is already a 128MB one on its way and the spec for that still says WM2003.

wm 5.0 how to istall

Please? help to install wm 5.0. I have vIsual Studio 2005 and Windows.Mobile.5.0.Pocket.PC.SDK> but don't now what to do with it.
I don't know what device you have but, if you own the HTC Magician (or a variant of it) you cannot install WM2005 because the HTC Magician doesn't have the proper memory specs.
If you have a different device, i suggest you look in another device board.

There isn't a build of WM5 for the HTC Magician, which the QTek S110 is a variant of.

The Magician does have the required memory specs as published by Microsoft. The problem is the drivers for the hardware found in the Magician such as the CPU, TFT screen, camera, etc.
And quoting Mike Calligaro from the MS Windows Mobile Team:
"A "typical" WM5 device will have 64M of RAM. 32M of RAM is very reasonable, especially if the device uses "NOR" ROM (more on that later). Because of the power drain, there are downsides to having "too much" RAM though. And, for that reason, 128M of RAM is unlikely, but may be done for certain "power user" devices.
A "typical" WM5 device will have 64M of ROM as well. Other than cost, there's no downside to having more. So, assuming you can afford it, it'll never hurt to pick the model with more ROM. "
and
"While Microsoft writes the bulk of the software on a WM device, a significant amount of it is written by the OEM or ODM who created the hardware. And the part they do is the most complicated part of the device: the drivers, parts of the kernel, and the radio stack. On major OS revisions, many of these parts need to be changed, sometimes dramatically. And, any time they need to be changed, extensive testing needs to be done.
"
and
"I've had people accuse me of lying to them. "I know you can upgrade my device, because this web page has the upgrade on it." Remember, I've flat out told you that every WM2003SE device is capable of being upgraded. The upgrades don't happen because the cost of doing the upgrade divided by the number of people willing to do it is too high. When you see an unofficial WM5 upgrade on a website, what you're seeing is an image where that cost was not paid. It's a bare minimum effort, intended only for people willing to put up with a bad experience, and never supposed to be seen by actual customers. Think twice before letting it anywhere near your phone."
Thank you KTA. This is what I have been saying all along... From where I stand, I believe that a COOKED wm2005 Rom for the magician will eventually show up. How stable it will be is a different question, But By the shear number of Magicians out there, IT WILL SHOW UP ! Eventually....

I have a different opinion on this one. What I'm saying is that the Magician satisifies the hardware minimum requirements, therefore IT IS POSSIBLE to run WM5 on it. But I think no one has the resources to build the extra code for FREE. The leaked ROMS for Himalaya, etc. where developed by Microsoft and/or its partners for testing purposes. The testing is now over, so if it hasn't emerged by now, I think it will never show up
At least we agree that it is possible. I also agree that every day that goes by where it is not made available, makes the chances less and less. But IMHO it will happen. We wait and see

OFFICIAL WM6 Coming to SPV M3100

Having spoken to HTC Europe they have confirmed a new firmware release for the Orange SPV M3100 due in april / may, this release will be WM6 / Crossbow (I asked specifically)
Unsure as to whether there are any extras / enhancements planned so far but it should be interesting.
(Orange were unable to let me know of any planned firmware releases and gave me the number for HTC as - to quote orange - "They build the devices and build the firmware upgrades for us, we have no information on the systems at present but they would be able to help you further")
Would be nice however experience would suggest that hope rather than expectation is the better bet......
meh i won't hold my breath
I lol'd
I would assume that WM6 uses more processor and memory than WM5 (to stick with Microsoft tradition ) so if so how does it fair in that respect?
It's pretty pointless for me to upgrade to WM6 (even if it was possible) to find the device too slow for use.
At the moment it's surviving, but there are still a few small outstanding issues, but I think there always will be with software like this.....

I have stepped up from the stock M3100 orange uk rom to xda live2.0 and now to WM Black 1.2. I seem to have an odd issue on soft resetting which is documented in the relevent thread. I suspect it is to do with some of the software I am running. General responsiveness of WM6 is in my opinion much better than I had with the original set up. I would not go back - it is much more like what I expected it would be when I ordered the phone.

Is there anything new coming out from HTC that is significantly better than Hermes?

Hey guys, this is my first post, so please excuse my ignorance regarding windows mobile phones. I'm currently using a Sony Ericsson M600i, and I want to make the switch to Windows Mobile. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on ordering a Softbank X01HT. I'm just wondering if there is something newer and better than the Hermes that is coming out soon that I should wait for instead of purchasing the softbank now. I do have some questions regarding flashing the ROM on the softbank to a Windows Mobile 6 ROM, but I think it's best to start another thread regarding that specific question. Any help on this is greatly appreciated, thanks.
PDAdb.net is a good place for learning about coming models.
If I were to replace my JASJAM I would probably pick this one. Not HTC though, but with my experience with their hardware so far I'd say that that doesn't matter much.
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=733 HTC kaiser i will be waiting for this one
Thanks for the reply and I appreciate the link. Very cool site. The one you linked to looks nice. In terms of specs, the one replacing the Hermes has USB 2.0 and a built in GPS. That's about all that I can see in terms of differences. Well besides the cooler way the qwerty keyboard comes out of course.
I think I might go ahead and put the order in for the Softbank.

Besides that its going to have a 3.0 camera and 256mb of ram.
Can anyone tell me if this device is truly capable of displaying the alleged 262144 colours/scales?
My understanding is that WM6 only supports 65536.

Unpopular model?

Is it me, or has the herald never gotten popular? And why not? I mean it's a smaller, faster and better Wizard. Comparing to the activity on the Wizard or even the big, chubby Hermes, this sub forum is close to dead! I dont get it.
I'm thinking that too, cause If we see the other forums, the others PDA has a lot of movement in their forums. I think that model is so great, better than other models like the models that you said.
It's just a matter of time. When I joined this forum I already had my HTC Prophet for some time and the community was similar in size and activity like the Herald's now. If you have a look at the Prophet forum now its pretty huge and active, too. It also depends on the prices those devices are sold so people will jump faster on them. The Prophet is avaible for just 10€ with a provider contract here in Germany, the Herald not even close. At least we have some very active users already on our side experimenting in putting cooked ROMs on our beloved Herald's. Sooner or later we we will be able to choose which custom ROM we want to put on our devices.

Yep -i guess also. The wing in america is our chance for cooked roms. Because german romcooker are not very presented (look at ppc-welt.com)
Except you and me - lol
So what can the folks with the Wizard do that we can't as far as ROMs? I just quit using my Wizard (or should I say it quit), and bought my Herald. From everything I see it's the same phone internally. So doesn't it make sense to be able to use a cooked Wizard ROM in a Herald? Of course I don't have the balls to try this myself to see if it works, that's why I'm asking the question.

Wizard uses an "old" os file version = nbf
herald uses = nbh
and the nbh files have to be signed. and we cannot singd it.
That´s the difference. It is not such eays like oin wizard and on hermes they got a prefabricated bootloader with supercid.
for herald they amde it better like for vista etc.

Exactly, the newer devices follow a higher protected filessystem.
The differences might look minor, but they are effective from being modified.
As papamopps said, its comparable with WinXP's to WinVista's protection.
But I'm certain we will have our custom ROM some time soon.
Other XDA communities like PDAMobiz or PDAViet and many others
are having their hands on HTC devices, so I wouldn't worry much,
at least we will get official WM6 ROMs and that's something.
It's just a matter of time... the Wing is the hottest selling PDAphone so far in the US.
And believe me, I bring up custom ROMs for the Herald/Atlas/Wing every chance I get!

It's just a matter of time... i agreee
the ship rom sucks
I also hink it's only a matter of time but for the time been I have had the herald (tmobile Wing) for 3 days and I am soooooo frudtrated with the lack of program memory (not storage memory) on this thing it's a nice phone but geeees the rom on it sucks I cant even have half the programs I had on my Wizard installed 15 programs and the 16th one was igo gps nav and it wont run unless I do a soft reset from lack of memory so i am thinking to go back to the Wizard untill I REAL custom rom is available without all the T-Mobile crap in it I tried to get some of the stuff out but not much luck most of the Tmobile stuff is par of the rom as far as I can tell. 3 days and I really miss the core 2.0n I have on the wizard WHAT A DIFFERENCE.
Not sure if i agree about best selling, Dash still outsells the wing in my area of the us Minnesota. The low memory issues is still really annoying me. official rom is out there somewhere?
With the latest rom from the danish retailer Dangaard, my P4350 is running quite well, haven't had memory problems since flashing it.
Well i guess the people are getting confused by the herald... i bought it because i knew that there is an dual core inside + windows mobile 6! If you don't know that the processor is a dual core, then 201Mhz just seem to be a bit low... i'm running them now on 260Mhz - kinda battery drain, but the speed is awesome! DVD watching *jammi*
The WM6 fixed a lot of bugs and added features, that are very handy + it has long time support, because of the "windows mobile update" option.

Yeah - after 30minutes of researching i found that out too... but why does the xda-developers wiki state a dual core in the prohpet running on TI 850?
