Fault list for HTC, O2, i-Mate, Orange & T-Mobile - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

It seems to me that we have all invested a lot of money in the Universal and there are some basic problems it has. We need to give the companies that make and distribute the Universal a complete list of problems they must fix.
My idea is to start a list that is added to by members here. Then on 1 December we should cut'n'paste the list and send as an email to whichever company provides support for you device (o2 in my case).
So, to start the list my suggestion is:
1. The Bluetooth will switch off when the camshell is shut but the BT light indicates that it is on
2. If Pocket IE is left running it will run down my battery very quickly
Okay - now just use this as the start of the list and add the problems you've found (i.e. #3, #4, etc).

The keyboard backlight button does nothing that I can see.

4) Phone does not actually start ringing until 3rd ring when switched off
5) When closed, external start/end call buttons dont light up when call is recieved
6) MSN Messenger draws the text input pannel half way up the screen when started laptop style. Flip screen to portrate and back and the MSN screen gets redrawn correctly

7) IE doesnot allow u to open more than one page?

Not true for my O2 Exec. Whether the clamshell is open, closed, laptop or portrait mode, I can still use my BT headset to make and receive calls.
Good luck with this thread. TBH I don't suppose it'll make the slightest bit of difference. While people are buying these things and the manufacturers and service provides are making money, why would they listen to our tiny voices?

8) inability to configure own extended rom, or remove and install from cd to increase available storage
9) regular crash and resets to recover memory that memory manager doesn't give back
10) inadequate access to connections when stacking connections, eg vpn over gprs to many clicks
11) inadequate camera, the worst 1.3mp ever seen and camera fails to remember setting changes on soft reset except if you pick only standard settings
12) flash on camera is totally pathetic as to be not usable
13) flash should be promoted as a torch and allow some value from it
14) inadequate ram,no ram upgrade path
15)not true VGA should have the improved FGA function per ozvga without the bugs
16) wmp not play videos in full screen
17) gprs does not keep the connection open constantly all day thus incurring the recurring cost
18) voice dialler doesn't work if clam is shut
19) hi startup memory utilisation RAM
20) hi utilisation of storage ROM
and I am sure there is a lot more if we searched this forum

21) terminal services black spots
22) remove quick launch bar
23) terminal services not sufficiently full scree, top n bottom bars can disappear
24) scroll bqrs to big, take up to much room
25) program more of the buttons
26) should be able to tweak more without using registry hacks, eg a list, on off, more, less
will it ever really end

@Simon_Darley,
Voice dialler does works great in whatever mode you place the device in be it clam (open or shut) or PDA.
Stronger flash? Develop a nuclear battery and you can even put a xenon bulb in the device.
Configuration of Ext.Rom is being worked upon by our very own super-cool Buzz. It should be here soon.
If i am not mistaken, the camera in the Universal is much much better than its predecessors. Yes, the cam is not as good as SE or Nokia's but SE or Nokia on the whole aren't even near as good as my universal The Atom with the 2MP cam will probably be a little better than the Universal.
WMP will play video's in full screen with the next RUU.
@Veletron,
My phone rings instantaneously. So, i wouldn't call this a bug. Could be device specific or something to do with O2 or T-Mobile presuming you have either of these. I own a JJ btw.
UD.

Okay list so far (please delete the faults that don't apply to you but those that require a workarounds are faults):
1) The Bluetooth will switch off when the camshell is shut but the BT light indicates that it is on

3) The keyboard backlight button does nothing that I can see

For me the following is annoying:
1) when the JJ rings with the lid shut the green and red buttons do not light up. At times in the dark I have by mistake pressed the red button and forced the call to end
2) about 20% of the times my JJ freezes when a new SMS is received. Makes the thing very unreliable because you never know that the JJ has hung up when it failed to receive the SMS successfully last time.
Kind Regards

rejects call when you answer after opening the clamshell
I find that if the clamshell is shut and I open it to see who is calling me, and then press the green button to take the call, it just hangs up on the caller. Annoying to say the least. Otherwise pretty happy now I took off the O2 set-up for the corporate one and have got used to it. Bit heavy though!

This never occurred on mine. It must be caused by a third party software. I always open the clamshell to answer a call, never had the problem.

Wow what a list of bugs ! how the hell did this device ever get through quality control and acceptance testing
if you guys are here to make a list of bugs spotted on this device, i guarentee you the list will be as long as the hills. Imate also seem to be making very little progress.
They really do need to get their skates on and start cracking out some ROM with all these updates in them

Being new to all this i can't find the backlight button for my keyboard. There is a button on the front edge, which turns on the backlight button for my screen and a light sensor near the hinge for turning on the keyboard backlight in low light. Any help identifying where this button should be :?:

Its on the front - to the right of the IR sensor window (which I must confess took me far too long to find) and has an icon that looks like a bulb.
Its doing nothing I can't do otherwise by tapping the screen or pressing a button. Now if it was mappable...

it is mappable
add the following key to the registry:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\40C8
and create values just like another key (i.e. 40C5)
soft-reset and then you are able to program the button.

Stupid Questions: 1. how do you turn the xdaII off?

This is my first pda so please forgive the stupid questions...
1. I am at a loss as to how i can switch off the xdaII completely. I can dim the screen, and switch off the screen, but not the entire xdaII. The bluetooth light and the green light flash continuously, unless i remove the battery catch down.
2. is there a way of getting a better battery indicator at the top, without having to go through the settings menu all the time. I can't seem to create shortcust of any kind.
3. ultra profiler... is it just me... i switch it to silent and it makes no difference.
Thanks...
Why would you want to turn it all the way off? This results in what is known as a "cold boot" - everythng in RAM (even the current date & time) is erased and the phone goes back to the way you bought it.
I don't know how to do it on the XDAII. On the XDA you press a piece of the stylus into a little hole on the bottom.
Fais, on the XDA 1, to switch off both phone and pda, first either hold down the red handset button for a while or tap the signal meter top right of screen and switch off radio/phone, then hit the power button once for a very short time. This will switch off phone and pda. I cant comment on xda2, dont you have a user guide?

Well, you must turn off the PDA part and the telephone part separately. For the PDA part, there's a hardware button (which I guess you knew already... ). To turn off the phone part, tap on the antenna indicator and select the first "link" in the bubble that appears. On an MDA I, the phone could also be turned off by holding the red "hang-up" hardware button for a few seconds. This does not work with the MDA II. It's not clear if this is a bug that will be corrected through a software update or if it's a feature.
Note that all that does not really turn your MDA II completely off. But you don't want that anyway, because you'd lose all your data and installed programs, as they are in RAM only.
There are many programs that can display battery and/or storage indicators on your "today" screen. Try searching for "battery" at Handango. The only program I found so far that indicates the battery status directly in the navigation bar is SmallMenu (http://tillanosoft.com/ce/smenu.html)
Cheers
Daniel
1. Tap on the network indicator, on the right middle part of the Navigation Bar (at the top of the screen), then click on "Turn Wireless Off". Then click on the Bluetooth connection on the right side of the command bar (bottom bar), and select OFF. All your flashing lights will go off.
2. Download "BatMemTime" (find it on Google). It is a free today plug-in
3. I don't use ultra profiler. You may try "My Phone Profile" by JGUI, I think it has more features.

Thanks everyone for the replies and links to batt indicators... that was a big help!! i've been so used to the p800 that all this is so new to me... The manual doesn't make it clear for a non-pda user about switching the xdaII off.... not to me anyway.
Tekflow thanks... i can switch off the bt quickly and switch on just as easily now... and more important sleep without having to cover the phone with by jacket at night

XDAII bugs - will the new ROM 1.60 fix these?

Over the past couple of months I've noted a few bugs with my O2 XDAII running Windows Mobile 2003. Are all these bugs well known and have they been fixed by the ROM upgrade 1.60?
- XDAII crashes occasionally when asking for a password just after being switched on, showing a blank white screen or flickering password entry screen even after the password has been entered. I have my password set to a 4 digit code and 5 minute delay. This seems to happen when a reminder or call wakes the device up.
- XDAII sometimes doesn't wake up for reminders (the XDA also suffered from this problem)
- when the GPRS connection is active, there is no option to "disconnect GPRS" within the radio menu pop-up box (which opens up when you tap the signal strength indicator). The only way to close the GPRS connection seems to be by holding down the red "end call" hardware button for 1-2 seconds.
- no "x" at the top right of the phone skin sometimes, when a call comes in that wakes the device up. This means you have to open another program to be able to go ack to the phone skin and close it.
- sometimes XDAII device doesn't switch off after 3 minutes, although the screen does dim after 1 minutes (the 3 minutes and 1 minute are what I have set in my power settings). This seems to happen after GPRS use or Bluetooth being switched back on?
- the phone skin doesn't always recognise the caller from the contacts list and just shows the number, even if the contact is in the contacts list.
- when looking up a name in contacts for sending an SMS message you need to add "+" in front of 44.... as this doesn't seem to get included, which prevents messages from getting sent properly
- the bluetooth headset does not interact properly with the XDA II, it sometimes doesn't connect or disconnect the headset properly, you cannot flip out the bluetooth boom to answer a call, you cannot voicedial (this is a big disadvantage, is there any software available which makes this possible?) and you cannot long-press to reject a call. Although I use a Motorola HS810 headset the problem is with the XDAII headset profile.
I am aware that the bluetooth headset and SMS "+" problem have been discussed in this forum but have the others been noticed and fixed in the new ROM?
Regards,
Rafil.

I got my wizard :)

It does feel alot more chunky than the jam - but it is fast and a non-xscale version of skype is preloaded. I'm just setting the device up now.
Paul
How did you get it? is out already?
Yep, sent out from expansys yesterday.
is it as big as the PDA2K?
Never had a PDA2k. Its roughly the same height and width as the jam but feels alot bulky, however it seems to fit in my jacket pocket just fine.
The device is nice and fast, although writing to the persistant storage is a little slow.
The build quality seems alot better then the jam, no rattles
Also voice dialling over bluetooth works just fine, the audio now gets routed through the BT headset and BT mic.
It's nowhere near the size of the pda2k! I received mine today as well, as you said alot chunkier than the jam but it's still small. Very tidy looking, just hope the sliding keyboard holds out!!
the audio now gets routed through the BT headset and BT mic
Psneddon,
Does music also work over bluetooth headset? I've always wanted this to work on the Jam, but didn't.
Ken
HI psneddon,
are there any PDF user menu come with your NEW K-Jam ??? would you upload it for us, Thanks
If file size is less than 25Mb try
http://www.mytempdir.com/
Thanks a lot
Found the manual here :-
http://www.clubimate.com.nyud.net:8090/support/KJAM/MANUALS/MNL/050905_K-JAM_manual_english.pdf
The device actually comes with a nice printed manual.
The answer to the music over bluetooth is sort of yes and no. If I have the device paired etc and play media player the music comes from the speakers, however if I press the headset and it lauches the voicedial app the music comes out the headset. It switches back once the voicedial application stops though
Paul
I notice, it swith automatic to landscape mode, if you slide the keyboard open.
But if you want to go in landscape without opening the keyboard, there isn't an icon on the right where you can tap on for switchin screen. If you want to switch screen without opening keyboard, you need to go thru the menus to change it.
Anybody know how to bypass this?
thnx
I've found my device to be a little unstable and a little buggy. Sometimes it just resets itself. Although the weird thing is sometimes when it soft resets its self it comes back and the radio gsm part of the phone survives the reset (its on and got a signal before I've even put in my device password)
psneddon,
The music over bluetooth sounds like it has improved over the Jam, I'm sure someone will come up with a fix for that, however I have heard that the A2DP profile update is coming out for the K-Jam, which would allow us to use stereo bluetooth headsets!!!
What is your overall opinion of the K-Jam? Coming from the Jam, with 128meg upgrade, what do you think about the memory? I heard something about when programs are loaded in persistent memory, the response is very slow. Have you seen this?
What is the overall response of the unit?
What is the battery life like compared to the Jam?
Thanks,
Ken
Yea ive got a 128mb Jam and would like to know the above Q
Thanks
Does the K-Jam come with a voice dial app like the Universal? If so, what program is it?
I have the Apache (basically the CDMA version of the Wizard) but it doesn't come with voice dialing software and even after installing MS Voice Command it cannot be activated via BT headset.
However, when pressing the button on the headset, the audio does come through the headset speaker indefinitely.
Dan
I'll mainly list the negative points... Heres a very unstructured review.
The device seems slightly slower than the jam, sometimes its really quick - other times it crawls along. One reason for this could be that WM5 seems to never close a program - when my device slows to a crawl i usually check the memory manager and there are like 15 programs running!
It is a little to thick for my liking and I'm not using the keyboard as much as I though I would. When I go back to holding my Jam it seems sooo thin and light.
When I install pocket plus 3 and soft reset my device freezes and i have to hard reset which is a pain - even tried installing it without any other software installed.
The side and top buttons on the device (e.g. power, camera) are all now recessed into the unit, which is good for stopping accidental presses but sometimes its hard to feel where the buttons actually are and its hard to know if your actually pressing them when you try.
The build quality is very good - better then the jam. However getting the miniSD out is a bit of a struggle - it seems to be sticking on something.
When you use the camera you can ONLY use it landscape - which is a pain.
Wm5 does seem a bit buggy here and there and yesterday my device was soft resetting itself every few hours although after a hard reset it is not doing it anymore (must have been a software problem).
Having all the storage space for apps/file and all the memory for running programs is how it should have always been.
Battery life is great compared to the jam, however if you have wifi on it does eat the battery a bit.
The wifi works no problem with my belkin router - no problems at all. Only think is that if you suspend the device (or it time out) the wifi gets turned off (thus saving battery) but you have to manually re-enable it. Would be good if it would automatically re-enable when you un-suspend the device.
The bt headset works much better then the jam. You can change a registry key to change the program that gets loaded when you press the headset button. Also the problem with the audio getting left open when you use ms voice command is fixed as you simply press the headset button again to close the audio (however its hard to tell that my headset it active in a noisy enviroment.
I remember when I first got my Jam, it had LOADS of bugs with the inital rom that were fixed in the next rom. I suspect it will be the same with the k-jam.
Another nice feature is that you can press and hold the "comm manger" button on the left side of the device and this switches the device between "sound on" and "vibrate" modes.
The keyboard it quite good although the backlight doesnt really light the alt-keys (each key has two uses).
There is now a little batter meter on the bottom of the screen which again makes it feel more like a phone
Overall the k-jam is a nice evolution of the jam - the speed is a good compromise between processing speed and battery. On the whole I would rather have a slightly slower device and a greatly improved battery.
I only wish it didnt feel so chunky - if you could detatch the keyboard and leave it at home - now that would be fantastic
Paul
Also putting the stylus under the device towards the back is a pain. I would have been much better if it had been left in the same location as the jam
A few other things...
You can now turn the device completely off just like the smartphone (hold down the power button for 4 secs)
You can cancel the device customisation when you hard reset the device by simply pressing cancel on the ext rom setup screen. However most of the software included is built right into the rom and the cab files simply contain shortcuts and reg entries
Thanks psneddon for the update,
That was a very good update you just gave. I want to know what programs you have installed and how much memory is left on the device?
How much is in program, storage and flash rom?
Do you install your programs in flash rom or what?
It sounds like this device is a little larger than the Jam, do you think this was a good upgrade considering all of the new features available on the device?
psneddon, bottom line: will you prefer it from your JAM (if JAM had WM5)?
The device has about 50mb storage space and it seems to have 50meg fo user ram (according to the device info). With just activesync running I have 30mb of memory free and 29mb in use. But going by the way Wm5 manages memory I wouldnt say that data is very meaningfull.
I install some stuff like today plugins in the storage memory but most of the stuff on miniSD card since its faster.
Since the storage/memory is now seperated I dont really think we have to worry anymore about what we install to main storage 50MB is enought in my view.
One good thing is that when you install software via activesync or by cab file the install process is much better - the device now asks where you want to install the software - activesync doesnt prompt you for any information.
Overall I really think that for being one of the first WM5 devices out it is stable enough - it should be rock solid after a few updates.
My only REAL gripe about WM5 is that I was really looking forward to the new "one handed operation" of the device - which is mostly very good - just like the smartphone. except that for programs that use the "ok" button in the top corner you still seem to need to tap the screen. Saying that there is an "ok" button on the keyboard

Known issues as listed on the imate site.

For anyone that is interested, here are the imate known issues for the k-jam
Under Investigation
• Customers may find that occasionally SkypeTM is not able to start up on their K-JAM. This can normally be corrected by Stopping other applications and hence freeing up Program memory before trying again. Use Start > Settings > System > Memory > Running Programs.
• In some cases the built-in flash light is not intense enough for taking pictures in low light conditions. This is currently under investigation but quality can be noticeably improved if pictures requiring flash light are taken using Night Mode, instead of automatic mode.
• Some customers may find the in-call speaker volume louder than may be required.
• When running Arabic, the SIP (Software Input Panel) icon is slow to respond after it has been tapped. It can take up to 20 seconds for the pop-up menu to appear providing the user with the option to select block/letter recognizer, phonepad etc.
• During the Hard Reset/ROM Update procedure the initial tap on the central cross for screen calibration is not detected by the device. This issue is currently under investigation.
• In the Arabic K-JAM, the “Back” and “Stop” options are not displayed on Internet Explorer Mobile. A workaround is to tap on the address bar, which will refresh those buttons to show the “Back” and “Stop” options.
• The saving of multiple entries from the Contacts list to the SIM card is not available. This issue is currently under investigation.
• The activation of the Camera automatically places the screen into landscape mode. This is standard functionality for the device.
• When the SIM PIN functionality is enabled and the customer chooses not to input the required PIN and cancels instead, so that the device can be used purely as a PDA, any attempt to subsequently make a voice call, will result in the phone attempting to establish the call and failing. The device will prompt for the SIM PIN after the call has failed, rather than before the call is initiated.

Resolved Issues
• Some improvements have been made to the audio carried over the Bluetooth link from the BT Headsets to the K-JAM device.
• ActiveSync synchronisation of Contacts Email and Calendar entries, from an Exchange server, has been improved.
• There is no Bluetooth option on the Modem Link application. This is by Microsoft design. The i-mate document ‘Guidelines for using i-mate K-JAM as a Bluetooth Modem.PDF will illustrate the procedure the user should follow.

• In some cases the built-in flash light is not intense enough for taking pictures in low light conditions. This is currently under investigation but quality can be noticeably improved if pictures requiring flash light are taken using Night Mode, instead of automatic mode.

surely thats a hardware problem not anything that they could fix via a update!

if its "standard functionality" why is it "under investigation"?

does that mean theres a rom update already for the k-jam?
whats the deal with rom updates in general now for the persistant storage phones? if you do a rom update will it have to wipe everything or will it just update and keep all your settings?

lol oh ok
have to say i am pleased to see that imate are at least posting info on bugs, and not trying to pretend that nothing is wrong,
now days the buyer is the guinee pig (tester) because we are so impatient for a product, if they wait to test everything before putting it on the market, another will come out and theres will be out of date before it arrives.

This one is actually amusing, especially after HTC/I-Mate basically pretended that the speakerphone on the Jam was not obviously too low. Despite all the complaints, we never got an acknowledgement or any restitution or fix for it.
So now they've over-corrected or something? Or are all the complainants actully ex-Jam owners who have adapted to their Jam's phantom speakerphone by developing bat-hearing?
I think the 'initial center tap' issue is just that - the first tap you'll try won't work, but you'll tap again in the center and it will continue. It probably just freaks some owners out thinking that there's a hardware defect with their touchscreen, that it was brought to i-mate's attention.
potentially another one to the list of problems
I'll start by saying I am VERY happy with KJAM. It really is such a huge improvement over my PDA2k. Having said that I wanted to hard reset it today and after following the very basic instructions on how to do that (press the comm button, the voice command button, and the reset button simultaneously) it does reset but only does a soft reset. Arrrgh. Can someone help here?
on hard resetting
sorry folks, found the answer to the hard reset question on this forum. After touching the reset button keep the two side buttons pressed for 5 seconds (while releasing the reset button). It will then pop up a message to press the SEND button to continue. The send button is the green phone button (in case you're interested).

How big of an improvement is it? I like my PDA2K but hate the short falls of it's bluetooth and directional pad. Really want to move on but am scared to buy another HTC phone right now.

in Settings/system there is a "clear storage" icon, is that the same as a full hard reset?

Faulty HD2

my Hd2 recently broke, it had a lot of things wrong with it.. 7 in total if you interested you can read the faults bottom of the post, im interest to know if anyone else had the same problems as me.
i sent it off for repair. all is ok now but on the cover letter they sent back with the phone they said the fault was "program abnormal excecution/ termination (error message pop up or etc.."" repair was "Replace main board" however i know i had a scratch on the back of the phone that is no longer there (there is also no dust etc in the bottom buttons or the top speaker), does that mean they replaced the whole device?
thanks
1) Whilst texting- The keypad is generally glitchy.
- When pushing the delete button other buttons are triggered too such as the B & M keys.
- The directional arrows do not work.
- Even though XT9 predictive text is selected it doesn’t always work.
- it takes numerous taps on the screen to start the write reply feature.
I have tried calibrating the screen and aligning it, this was unsuccessful.
2) The home button below the screen has stopped working.
3) The camera has suddenly developed an intermittent red tint, sometimes the camera will be fine other times it is not.
4) When trying to launch the camera/ video camera it sometimes says error unable to to connect. I have to switch the device off to fix this, sometimes it takes 3 attempts.
5) The phone can only be set to vibrate.
6) When pressing the phone down key to get the lock screen to appear it sometimes takes up to 30 seconds to appear.
7) The battery life appears to be getting shorter after every charge, for eg. It finished fully charging at 1am, i then left the phone in standby mode (no programs running) and by 8am when i woke the battery was a 40%
