Dopod 838 is the chinese version of the HTC wizard, it looks very nice to me compare with the Qtek/imate HTC wizard. Nevertheless, it's only available in chinese ROM....

The one thing I really like about it is the fact that the soft keys are placed further away from the call & end-call keys. I keep pressing the soft key accidently when I try to end a call - it's pretty annoying!

ouch that dopod was really ugly =) love my qtek 9100 =D

Isn't this just the HTC WIZA100 series design? Same internally as the WIZA200, but in a different plastic case, as used in the cheap Cingular version?
http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000217064619/

Actually, the Dopod 838 is available in both Traditonal Chinese and English ROMs. I live in HK (Australian) and have played with an English version Dopod 838.
Hope this helps. I personally prefer the look of the I-Mate/QTEK version.

so is the Qtek 9100 has a plastic case or metal one ????

Both (the front bezel is alloy). But if the WZA100/Cingular 8125 is $100 cheaper, who cares?

1st impression of Dopod - Sony P900(i) & Urgly...
That's why I bought a K-JAM via eXpansys even no official support center in HK & no interest free installment.

Want to clarify: Dopod 838 is Wizard, and K-JAM, Qtek 9100, etc - are Prodigy. Dopod keyboard is much like Universal keyboard, IMHO better then Prodigy.

True, the Dopod/Cingular is the "original" Wizard design. Not convinced on the keyboard though. It might look nicer, but the photos show that, unlike the Universal, the keys are totally flat. To me that suggests zero tactile feedback, and so a high risk of pressing adjacent keys,
a) because there is no space between them, and
b) because of the lack of a "dome", no way of feeling that your finger is central on the key.

i like the cingular/dopod one more but i have a couple of questions. anyone know of the cingular release date for it? cuz i know it was supposed to be mid november then they kept delaying it now some one said feb 1. also why is the dopod $950 on ebay and the k-jam around 700$? also is the dopod 838 802.11b or g like the k-jam. one last thing anyone have a pic with the dopod/cingular model next to the k-jam? because it looks like the dopod is smaller.

Club i-mate sucks...

Itried to become a member to the club i-mate.
But i can´t, because my device is called Qtek S100 not i-mate jam, It´s the same device, but the only says that i have to contact the store from where i bought it, but what can they do?????? Change the name on my device????
Conclusion:: Club i-mate sucks. :evil:
Club I-Mate is only for I-Mate Jam owners. Not for MDA Compact or Qtek owners.
Although clubimate does have many issues due to which you can fairly conclude that their support sucks, your problem however does not seem to be an issue with imate but rather with Qtek.
cubimate is for people who have bought an Imate branded device and you clearly have not. So you should be looking for a clubQtek (if one exists)... and if there is none then its the Qtek people you should be complaining to.

Hmmm. Since when is Toyota and Nissan the same???
The difference between i-mate jam and the qtek s100, is mostley cosmetic, they are made in the same factory, it´s the same on the the inside, Atleast that´s what the Swedish manufactur said.
The biggest difference is the text on the outside.

Imate and Qtek buy the magician from HTC and rebrand it. Since they sell independently and are rivals, Imate has no business serving Qtek customers.

Ι understand what you say, but think about I-mate. Why allow you to enter in their forum, get their know how, their info, their applications, their firmware... when you haven't paid them for buying the S100???
It's all about branding... I also have a Qtek 2020, which is the MDA II... I cannot enter in the i-mate forum like you...
Don't bother though there is nothing important to find there... The firmware updates cannot be loaded to your S100. You can download them from an official Qtek website... We in Greece have one: www.qtek.gr

No, the difference is also in the content of the Extended ROM. For the Hardware, it is HTC that you can contact...
If you have a PC running Windows, you can't say that unix sucks, right ?
Fairiness in bussiness
You are all right!
I've learn the hard way that Qtek IS NOT iMate. I ordered an XDA-II from Expansys, that was out-of-stock and re-routed to be iMate, that ended up being a Qtek 2020, the price difference was even in my favour, Right?
W-R-O-N-G!!!
Qtek is almost a fake brand, (at least for my WWE version): No web page, no support, no upgrades, no forum, no----- NOTHING!
More than a year later, I gave up trying to get BT Handsfree support for my Qtek 2020, and get BT syncing at same time, so I ordered an iMate JAM from Expansys, Guess what? I just received a call from Expansys, offering me to switch to a Qtek S100!
I REFUSED!
I prefer to wait two more weeks rather than feel myself again in the wild, with no one "official" to help (Thanks ONLY to XDA developers and you guys here)
Conclussions:
HTC really sucks, since they are the ones who know how "hadicapped" their devices are, and provide no help.
Qtek sucks too, since they are making money for branding the devices and letting them unsupported.
Expansys sucks a bit too, though just for being un-informative and not advising their custommers that "manufacturing" is part of the thing, but "support is paramount" when you are talking about really new tech products that are going to need a lot of tweaking.
iMate might have their share too, but obviously not for my choosing of my Qtek 2020.
And iMate is even cheaper!

Any chance you could tell us what is new in the firmware available on http://www.qtek.gr/s100_firmware.html?
It seems to be of a later version than that of my swedish Qtek, and I would very much like to know what is in the update so I know if I should bother calling Brightpoint and ask them to put it on their web site.
Thanks!

Qtek S100 Firmware Update
ATTENTION! WITH THE UPGRADE ARE EXTINGUISHED THE DATA OF YOUR APPLIANCE! CONTACTS, PROGRAMS, SOUNDS OF CALL, PICTURES, VIDEO THAT CAN EXIST IN YOUR APPLIANCE, WILL ERASE!
Who can use Greek?
The Greek publication has been manufactured by the Ace-Hellas. The Greek publication is been disposed only for appliances that have been bought from the Ace-Hellas or her network of resellers.
What it needs I am careful?
The Qtek fortj'zej when becomes the upgrade. It should you attend it is completely fortjsme'no front you begin the upgrade.
That does become the upgrade firmware?
Attend to have passed the Activesync and exists communication with the computer. It is proposed you use some computer with Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Terminate any program you have open! Afterwards simply you execute the file that you lowered/you will lower and you follow the directives in your screen. If you face problem with the upgrade you try in some other computer. When it finishes the upgrade it will be supposed you realise hard-reset (the photograph in the end of upgrade in your computer, you shows how him makes).
I began the upgrade and in the middle to me it was cut the current and extinguished the computer (or more simply failed the upgrade).
Do not worry. The Qtek has his bootloader therefore it will be supposed after a reset you see white screen (the screen is not litted up therefore sees carefully from near distance) and is entered Serial.
1. You remove the Qtek from the base. Remove the battery for 30 seconds and xanatopoceti'ste.
2. You begin your computer regularly
3. You activate the Qtek and place in the base. The clue Serial should change in USB.
4. You execute again the upgrade.
I began the upgrade for 2nd time but failed again.
Try in some other computer. Try in computer with Windows 2000 or XP. The upgrade does not probably work rightly in Windows 95,98,ME. Also a other factor are the problematic USB Controllers (eg VIA)
Exist some does background for what it changed in the new publication?
We unfortunately do not have the changes that realises the Qtek. It follows however background for Greek:
1.1.1 (03/02/05)
- With publication 1.06 is corrected the problem with the MMS in the network of Cosmote. - Correction of orthographic errors and other errors in fo'rmes.
- Automatic regulations GPRS Internet/MMS and on the 4 networks of mobile telephony. In the Q-Telecom exists only service MMS. Attention! It should you have activated your services from pa'roho'!
- Choice permanent report in the SMS. Can activate the possibility in each new SMS is preselected the report. This him you will find in the Regulations in the choice for Language.
1.0.0 - Initial Publication (20/12/04)

You mean Nissan and Toyota aren't the same? They're both transportation devices, aren't they?
Same goes for Qtek branded phones & I-Mate branded phones. The guy who started this thread is pissed because he owns a Qtek branded phone, yet can't log into the I-Mate website to get support for it? Come on.
Toyota and Nissan are by far more different from eachother than the Qtek and iMate.
If you need to use cars for your example you might want to go for something like the Opel Agila and Suzuki Wagon R. Built by the same company, looks identical, but marketed by different companies.

Orange SPV M500 - novice questions!!!

hi all,
simple questions i know but i just wanted to make sure of a few things before i go ahead and purchase this!
is the SPV M500 basically the same as the imate jam and Qtek s100 etc??? because i hate all the orange branding crap they put on their phones so will be lookin to put the qtek or imate rom onto the phone asap! will this be possible? i also need to unlock it so i can use a dual sim adapter and use both my o2 and orange sims in it - will the unlock solution for the rest of the magician devices work for the spv m500? has anyone tried?
secondly have people used Tom Tom 5 with this phone? can you report if the devices worked well together and give a stable solution?
thanks and SORRY for the stupid questions!
Tom
svp 500 vs qtec s100
the svp 500 is similar to the qtec s100, but not the s100. The svp 500 is also known as the Qtec S110.
I might be talking under correction here, but I understand the S110 has a new ROM which is not the same as the latest S100.
I don't think there is much difference the 2 phones, other than that your memory is 128 instead of the 64 for std qtec s100s. The outside of the svp has also changed slightly, so has the colour.

This is not true! the Orange M500 is exactly the same as the MDA Compact, Qtek S100, VPA etc. The only thing that is different is the looks. The M500 is somthing less round and is in darkish gray. The Qtek S110 is a Qtek S100 with 128Mb Ram Thats it!
thanks for that rvbcrs,
I did mention the differences which were the same as yours.
For instance, you can not buy the mda compact / vpa compact / ijam or any of the other's stylusses, since they've changed the s110's stylus and it will not fit. I've also been told the the Rom is versioned otherwise, which may be so / not.
It is really the same thing, but what i tried to say is that it is definately improved (only a bit) and like the rom hacks might be different.. those type of things.. but hey, if you've got the same phone you probably know better.
thanks again for your input on this
The vpa compact/orange spv have much better sound quality than jam/mda etc! Also they are only 64mb just different housing!
The vpa compact/orange spv have much better sound quality than jam/mda etc! Also they are only 64mb just different housing!you'll be able to get rid of most of the orange "crap" once you get it.Just go to add/remover programs and remover the orange software that gets rid of the visible things + interface etc
thanks very much for the replies guys!
in general does anyone have any experience of Tom Tom navigator 5 and any of the magician devices? do they work well together? i have heard that tom tom 5 drains the full processor power for the entire time it is running which has led to critical overheating of some devices and the phone functions and for that matter any other functions cant run at the same time due to the work that tom tom 5 puts on the processor!!! is this true?!
thanks,
Tom
i'm running tt5 on my vpa.it works fine.lt does use a great deal of the cpu but you can't use other programs when the navigator is on anyway!no overheatirg problems.tt5 works better than tt3 for me when all patches are applied as l struggled to answer calls on tt3 as it ran so slow but tt5 is better!pm me for more

Difference Wizard vs. Prodigy

Hi Y´all!
As I understand it the HTC Wizard came in two different forms; Wizard & Prodigy (or Wizard 100 and Wizard 110 as I´ve read they are sometimes called), with the groups being as follows:
Wizard:
i-Mate K-Jam
O2 XDA Mini
Orange SPV M3000
Qtek 9100
T-Mobile MDA Vario
Prodigy:
Dopod 838
Cingular 8125
Vodafone VPA Compact II
What is really the difference between the two of these groups (besides the slight difference in shape), are there any at all?

As far as I can see, they are actually the same (including the shape). HTC Prodigy was the original Code Name which was then changed to Wizard on its release (like Hermes is TyTn). Certain vendors may have the case recoloured (QTek) or have it slightly changed (O2 has the O2 logo embossed on it), but they are essentially the same.
ok so I accidentily mixed up the names of the two groups, according to geekzone (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/smartdevices.asp?phonemodelid=17 && http://www.geekzone.co.nz/smartdevices.asp?phonemodelid=156) the prodigy are the five devices in the top list and the wizard are the other three.
Plus they do look a bit different as seen in these pics:
cingular 8125:
http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/cingular-8125.jpg
qtek 9100:
http://www.joncollins.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/qtek-9100.jpg
The thing is that we develop an application running on these devices and now my development crew tell me that our application is handled differently by these two groups...

From what I have read, the K-Jam and the XDA Mini S ARE both Wizards. Of this I am fairly certain. (They look like the one you posted from joncollins.net)
The HTC Prodigy in most pictures looks like the Wizard and in the Specs sounds like the wizard. In one set (on www.phones2udirect.co.uk) it says the Wizard has Windows PPC 2005 while the Prodigy has WM5 (and I know my "Wizard" has WM5).
The images of those with a different case seem to be few and far between (inlcuding the ones on the geekzone.co.nz pages you posted which have a different shell, but otherwise the specs are the same). Try Google images for more, but they all seem to look like my phone (XDA Mini S) too.
I'd recommend getting it to work on a standard Wizard (which seems the most prevalent design) and if someone can say that there is a problem with Phone X, get one in as there seems to be confusion over which is which (and there is also the HTC Prophet, just to try and confuse people more....).
{Edit} Maybe this will help -
European products - http://www.europe.htc.com/products/
Japanes product - http://www.japan.htc.com/product.htm
American Products - http://www.america.htc.com/products/default.html
The american one seems to have the phone you are on about and the T-Mobile MDA then everything else below that is something else I have not seen before.... but they are actually a different machine.{/edit}
thanks for the answer, very descriptive

Mda Vario - Wiza100

could it be possible that a T-mobile MDA VArio is a wiza100?
i am looking for a defective unit since i need it for parts for my dopod 838(wiza100) and could the hardware or main board parts be used from the MDA Vario to the dopod 838?
any reply would mean great help. thanks.
On the home page of xda-devs forum it lists all the other names that devices may be known as. According to the front page of this forum, yes the dopod 838 is also known as the MDA Vario. As far as I know parts are interchangable regardless of what branding they may have.

Software wise they are 100% the same..hardware wise there are minor differences between some of the models..for instance the stylus on cingular 8125 and tmobile MDA (vario) is not the same..the keyboard is slightly different...you may have problems using some of the parts..outer casing etc.
I am concerned if the parts of the board is the same for both the mda vario and cingular 8125/dopod 838. I need an IC component for the USB module and i found a vario that has a broken LCD, i was wondering if the electronic components of a wiza100 and the wiza200 would be the same or compatible?

can HTC Softbank X01HT change casing?

is this correct?
HTC Softbank X01HT = HTC TyTN = Dopod 838Pro??
is this is correct then can i change the HTC Softbank X01HT casing to Dopod 838Pro?
Hmmm, not sure if that makes sense!
The differences are not that much and I think that you are even more lucky by having the SOFTBANK version since it provides you with larger buttons under the display!
Also you might consider that you need to be almost an expert to get the device packed in a new housing properly. Well, your choice anyway!
I wouldn't risk it! It can be that the front part hardware under the display differs from a dopod since the keys are differently arranged!
Well, once more: I wouldn't risk it except my housing would be broken or so ... !
actually the phone i got is a 2nd hand... and also i prefer the 838pro looks...
i will goto dopod service center and check with them first before i change the casing.
anyway... thanks for your advice...
