Utilising the Volume slider - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Does any of you guys know how to utilise the volume slider to do different things - especially scrolling within menues and applications :?:
Also, is it possible - i.e. is there any software available or any other means, such as 'hacking' into the system - to constantly modify and change the button functions on the device :?: :?:
As a newbie (and somewhat WM-challanged ) to the Windows Mobile/PPC platform I would greatly appreciate some detailed explanations rather than simplified one liners... Thanks in advance

Sadly, the Volume Slider can only be used in Pocket Internet Explorer when in FULL SCREEN mode to scroll up and down. Till now that is as far as anyone I have seen come up with for the volume slider.
As far as the other hardware buttons are concerned, don't know how much of a newbie you are, but WM5 allows you to change them, if you go into Settings, Buttons.
Beyond that there are several software applications available for WM2003 that map the hardware buttons, but not sure if they are at all stable with WM5 and the Jasjar/Exec/Universal - they could cause your machine to lock up and then you need to do a hard reset and will lose everything, so keep that in mind if trying.
Software apps for WM2003 include VITO ButtonMapper, buttonMax.

AE Button Plus seemed to work fine for me. I re-mapped everything; it's very nice in Isilo on VGA mode to be able to "zoom" in and out by scaling the font with the volume control.

Damn. just shelled out for Vito Buttonmapper too...
Doesn't allow mapping of the backlight, volume slider, although got the backlight button sorted with a simple wee reghack got on xdadev.
Volume Slider is something I'd love to be able to map now...
EDIT: Vijay, is it working for you in WM5.0 on a JASJAR-type device?

hmm, i just got asked this by chakra via PM and i think i was confused. works fine on wm2003. not sure if i'm using it on wm5 because i'm working on something to improve scrolling in PIE using vol buttons. AEButtons shld work on wm5 i imagine, but check out the thread on assigning apps to backllght button. this should help you to assign apps to any button.

Yup, got my backlight setup as a free button for any use now, thanks to the reg hack I d/l from here... - What would we do without you guys?
vijay, what language or utilities do you use to program these utilities, how hard is it, and what's your background to make you get to that level of ability?

biker: glad you got things working. i program in c++ for the pocketpc and VB for the pc. My background is entirely non programmimg, I'm a lawyer working in the UK.
I've been into computers for years, but only got into the pocketpc this August (i had an ipaq 5years ago but didn't get into it).Since August i managed to upgrade from a p900 to Magician, which was great. but very quickly i realised there were many features missing that i wanted. evb is very bad, and to program today plugins i needed to face learning c++ for the first time.
i've grabbed a couple of books and some online tutorials and started hacking away. it's a steep learning curve but rewarding. i consider myself incompetent at
c++, and still have lots to learn.
Easy? no. requires lots of patience and a mind not easily frustrated (and can survive without sleep!), but as i said, i am happy when my stuff works, and a hundred times more so when you guys find it useful!

Just uninstalled buttonmapper.
It worked well when I installed it to SD card, but that's not recommended apparently - I got an error message each time I rebooted.
So, uninstalled it, and the error message was still there. So, reghacked that away, and also the fact that it had mapped my right softkey (which it can't do!) to something else - got round that.
Anyhow, installed it to main memory, and it appears to work, no error messages, but none of the button reassignments work. At all. Useless.
And their support site has to be seen to be believed - it is clearly written to put people off looking for support. It's terrible. I've used easy and comprehensive support sites in my time, eveything from a simple email to a ticket based system., and this is the worst I've seen.
Waste of money for me, and more annoyingly, a waste of time.

Believe me, it's appreciated!
Nothing like simple utilities that fill a gap, that just work, extremely well...
On the other hand, I've no time for stuff that refuses to work, as the post above shows!

Just did....
Serious stuff!

have to say, although it's a nice app, it's the only app then ever forced me to hard reset. i lost my my buttons control panel and various other problems.
buttonMax was very clever on wm2003 and i think is now out for wm5. worked well except it had an arbitary limitation on customisable keys other than default 5. great app though.
in the end, i just just smallmenu assigned to one hardware key and programmenu assigned to another, for 2 custom launcher menus

actually i have found - going back to the original question of the thread -that you can scroll with the volume slider in any program that supports going full screen!

How are you guys customizing your today screens?

I know you can download different today plug-ins, and i know about VisBar and such, but I don't see how your today screens look so different from mine (after looking at various 'today screen' threads).
My screen is just several horizontal lines, with the usual "no new messages", "active tasts", etc, and a couple of plugins.
I see people's screens with a completely different layout.
Cheers for any replies

Thanks for the link, very helpful.
How do you get rid of only the bottom toolbar in WM5? I downloaded the program that other people had used, but I could only get rid of the top bar (which i'd prefer to keep), and not the bottom one.
Cheers
matheprat: If you're referring to the program ToggleToday, I haven't released it yet for WM5, but it's coming very soon.

If you need an alternative, try Wisbar Desktop Advance.
V
Note: Wisbar 2 or desktop is very very laggy
Use PPX instead if you want better speed, its just as good as WisDesktop.
This is the skin I m currently using
Does PPX work on WM5? Looking on their website it doesn't mention specific compatibility, but has anyone got it runniung satisfactorily?
Cheers,
Fin
Yes, I forgot to mention PPX. It takes quite a bit of headscratching to get it set up, but it works well in the end. Never tried it on WM5.

There's so many program's out there that can change the way you're today screen looks
- PocketBreeze
- PocketPlus
- RescoExplorer
- and many more
I'm still looking for a alternative interface for my phone to operate more easily with my fingers instead of my stylus.
It's so hard to quickly find a contact in my contact list while on a bike, in my car, etc since the scrollbar is like 3 pixels wide. Or to lock the phone or close an application, the icons are to frigging small
Not that I have big hands, rather small for a guy even but still...
Any suggestions?
matheprat: not sure when it'll be released, when I get time!
I'm working on too many other things as well, it's really just when I get a few minutes to work on each bit. Hopefully release fairly soon, as I said, WM5 is done, I need to join it to my old WM2003 code and then check it against a companion today plugin I wrote. Quite a bit of behind the scenes stuff involved

I didn't mean to come accross pushy, sorry if I did. I know there's a lot of work needed in developing programs, and no doubt it will be worth it when it is released.
Many thanks
matheprat: no offence taken at all, didn't think you were being pushy.
ToggleToday was one of the first programs I ever wrote, and then I bought myself a Universal to start development on, but accidently wrote VJBigPhone and that kept me busy for a month or so
Now VJBigPhone has gone quiet, I'm finally getting around to re-writing ToggleToday! It's a messy program to write, particularly for dual WM5/WM2003 compatibility, but the basic code is written. Now I'm wrapping it together and will work on a GUI for it.

The MOST stable Today Information plugin eva
By the way, can someone recommend the most stable Today Information Plugin?
I was using latest PowerLevel plugin by ScaryBear but it has lots of memory allocation/deallocation problems. Then I switched to simple 15Kb "TodaysInfo" plugin by Lou Terrailloune (v1.7) and it is quite stable but it has significant rendering delays when rotating screen. So, what is the most stable/fastest one to show battery/memory levels and perhaps it can inform you when your battery charge completed (aka PowerLevel/AudioInformer)?
Thanx!!!
Sounds good - any chance of a link?

Today Plugins: which is most used?

Cause of low memory space i need to know how many users prefer a today plugin instead another.
Ps: If is Others (must have similar today functions of the softwares in the poll) , please write something about it!
Thanx for your contribute and sorry fotr my BAD english!
SkizZO: that's a very big question. What do you want your plugin to do? Many of us use many different plugins for very different reasons.

ok you've right! but all the software in the Poll has this function.
xcuse me
Calendar+ and PPCprofilesPRO.
Regards,
Arto.
Currently ?
- JGUI Zodiac Date (jeus for the date, and it doesn't pop up anything if you accedently tap it )
- tAgenda (used to have Tasks, Inboy and CalenderPlus, tAgenda makes all three obsolete)
- Oh, and Nakka's TDLaunch, because it let's can configure Iconsize and margins !
Not really a Today Plugin, but it replaces Todays info perfectly : W-Tools ResInfo (yes, Battery stats, Storage and Mem gauge in the Tray! It even shows charging )
My taskmanager is PocketNav, and i use the camerabutton as TodayToggleOFF and the memobutton for TodayToggle (Hi Vijay ! Great tools ! Normaly i would have taken a dozen pictures of side of my pants !
Now nothing really serious happens if the buttons get pushed accedentaly!)
Wow, someone actually uses TodayToggle?!
There's a name I haven't head for a looong time
I like it, but I will really have to think of something useful to do with that app some day!
V
Well, it's usefull enough for me.
I used to have "Today" under a button, but always shutdown the PPC afterwards, so.......
And if i use TTN5, i don't want to PPC to trun of, hence....
AND i always had a problem with accendently pressing the side buttons, and now the at least don't open "Tasks" or like i said, worse; the camare and starts shooting...
Btw, i tried Hidestart, but it doesn't seem to do anyting but temp. show time and batt %....
I'm still looking for all kinds of "Thumbs only" or "Thick fingers" solutions, i use my PPC a lot 'one handed' or in the car...
Espec. setting snooze to 15 min. or so in the car is considdered 'reckless driving'
I haven't developed HideStart any futher than a very early preview a long time ago. I've got some ideas about changing the way notifications are presented, particularly in VJSihaya, but I still like the idea of HideStart.
However, I think that when you "ghost" reminders, they still try to silently activate themselves from time to time, which causes your current app to lose focus, which is irrititing if you're typing something. I thought it was a bug in my code until I realised this. However, I still use it to ghost reminders from time to time when I'm too busy to snooze them all
It's possible some code I wrote for the upcoming release of VJOkButt (used to get around incoming call notifications) might be of help here... but HideStart is not a priority right now unfortunately. I actually just developed it for my own use in a modified version so that I could switch between Start Bar, New Bar and ToggleToday. It shouldn't really have been released, but I thought the reminder remodeling code was a useful idea to demonstrate... more later, I've got work to do

And i'm not really a programmer, more like a scripter... Maybe i should take some time to dive into VB or eVB (I can do quite nice things in Acces on the desktop !)

Doesnt thebuild in tasks plugin work for you?? Or you want a more "post-it" notes kinda feel??
I just want like one line on my today screen to write whatever I want....for example......like the owner informations with phone number is 2 lines.....I want to disable that and write my own information in one line.....doesn't have to be owner info....just anything I want.....it's kinda hard to explain.....and I want to to be able to use chinese characters to write too.....

hey vijay, very interesting the way you made it look so small and efficient! mind sharing it? interesting little application; although i don't use it as much it's good as a quick scratch pad for all occasions...
Someone just emailed me about the skin.
I've found a copy on my ftp - I haven't used the plugin for a while, because I'm still migrating my setup to WM5 and deciding on new plugins.
But hopefully this is the skin shown:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/!tools/notestodayskin/notestoday_skin_new.zip
I modified the skin to take almost no room, but be stylus selectable, but particularly selectable with the dpad. I can't remember if I had to edit the registry, but basically you can switch minimised and maximised mode by scrolling down the today screen with the dpad and clicking enter. It'll shrink/expand accordingly

Hi Vijay,
I Guess this is off topic. But on one of the screenshots your have an extra blue bar underneath the start button. With two arrow vertical up anddown at the start and sms, phone, and bluetooth etc. in it. I also saw some sort of profiles program with the same arrows in a later screenshot. with seems like profiles to me.
Are those programs the same and if yes, which program is it? I'm tried several programs Pocket Zen phone and WM Profiles. But wasn't happy because the vibrate function didn't work properly on my wizard.
Let me know, thanks.
Cheers
Shah
Shah, the blue bar near the top in my 18 August 2005 screenshots is an early version of my PhoneAlarm skin. This was refined into the one you can see in my 5 April 2006 screenshot, at the top of the screen (being used via my VJToggleToday program).
This is used to select profiles (where the normal "Vibrate" icon is at the top of the screen, clicking this brings a drop down menu with my profiles, Work, Home, Silent, FlightMode)
PhoneAlarm is excellent, generally. Profiles are a very basic feature on any phone, and it's mindboggling that it's not a standard feature, but I like PhoneAlarm, and Bruce, the author (you can also see my slightly hacked version of AlarmToday as well in the screenshots).
My 5 April 2006 screenshot also shows claunch at the bottom (apologies for the stupid icons, I lost some icons when I changed phones), being used to change PhoneAlarm profiles with my thumb. So I can make calls/send SMS using VJPhoneTools, change profiles (PhoneAlarm), and launch selected apps all from the same plugin.
V
Vijay, do you not find PhoneAlarm is resource-heavy?
Also, is that skin on your home page? (I've had a look and can't see it)

Webreaper:
My phonealarm skin is towards the end of the first post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27331&highlight=vjtoggletoday
I've used PhoneAlarm for pretty much my whole year on XDA devs, and never found it to be a problem on resources. There are simpler ways of doing what it does, but it's useful, and gives me easy control of profiles etc. Bruce is filling it up with stuff I can't imagine needing, like cell based profiles etc, but I'm happy with the basics - notifications, mail count, profiles etc.
PhoneAlarm or a similar app is essential IMHO for effective use of the phone.
I've had trouble with AlarmToday since upgrading to WM5, but the old WM2003 version was flawless and very useful too.
V
Thanks Vijay. Your skin looks the simplest and neatest I've seen.
I really liked the idea of the cell-based profiles, in particular for things like enabling wifi for when I'm at home, but disabling it when I'm at work. Unfortunately, my house and office are both on the same cell.

Xperia Bluetooth Switcher

Since I mostly use the spb shell-panel I started to get very bothered with the amount of clicks needed to enable or disable bluetooth (in some SE panels this is available with a click on an icon and then an OK but not in spb shell).
Since I am used to develop applications in Visual Studio I got around to learn how to develop for the windows mobile platform and threw together a little application to do what I wanted.
This little application simply enables or disables bluetooth without any fuss or questions and then terminates itself. The first time the application is started you will be asked whether you want your cellphone to be visible to other devices when bluetooth is enabled. I have this app in my startmenu so it is always available.

Oh, thank you! I still don't have an xperia, but for sure when I'll have it, i'll install this cab^^ but could you do it also as a "panel"? This would be awesome, I think.. Because I really like the design, its very beautiful and as a panel it could be really useful^^ anyway, thanks a lot!!! Greez, cad

Thanks
Unfortionately I have no idea how to code panels at the moment. I downloaded SonyEricssons developer kit for panels but it was only for C++ and my coding language of choice is C#. But maybe I can find something here in the forums.
Personally I would say I prefer not having this app as a panel since I want it available all the time (It's in my start menu).
Ah, that makes sense. It would have been just a goody to play with, I would have really liked such a panel, but you're right, this is much more effective. Hehe, and you would've been the first one programing such a panel, isn't that exciting? anyway, don't hear me, I know really nothing about programing, so don't care what I say just thank you for this really helpful app!!! Greez, cad^^
Thanks alot! I really wanted to use the spb panel but it didnt have the enable/disable connectivity buttons so I had to stick with the sony ericsson one which is painfully slow!
Is it possible that you could make something similar, but for enable/disabeling wifi, please?
cheers mate

Hi!
I am actually thinking about creating such a program. What would be the prefered way to do it you think? To get a question when the application is started whether you want to work with wifi or bluetooth, or to have two separate applications, one for wifi and another for bluetooth?
I am leaning towards alternative number two, I like just having to click the application once and that's it.

Yes, thats what I would prefer. Keep it simple.
why not install SPB Phonesuite - then you have a plugin on the today screen with one large nice button to quickly turn wifi and bluetooth on and off

Me too, as few clicks as possible please
Too bad spb didnt intergrate connectivity buttons in their panel...
I use aebplus.. amazing program.
linked the "OK" button to bring up the "action list" when double clicked, and then scroll down to toggle bluetooth on/off. super fast and reliable since it only uses hard keys.
read about my other shortcuts here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441191
Thank you!
from the spb-panel:
- click antenna
- click comm manager
- start bluetooth
and now:
- press start
- start bluetooth
is it really about 1 click ?
- QuadWord
Does anyone know if mikelspikel's Wirelesspower originally developed for the Dell Axim will work on the SE X1. I'm about to retire my X51v in favour of an X1 and use it all the time. Its a pill-crusher.
Here's the link: http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/...t-switch-utility.html?highlight=wirelesspower

So was a wifi switcher created?
First nice work khaan!
I use PhoneWeaver, its really a profile tool. Where you can customize alot, sounds, connections and so on... manual or autoswitching profiles. But about the Bluetooth thing, you can add PW to you todayscreen, and there you see your bt-connection, press it to acitvate or disable it.
I found these whilst browsing the forum yesterday, seem to work well.

NOT FOR HD2/TOUCH PRO 2, the HD2/touch pro2 actionscreen has another bluetooth switcher.
Sounds great. Hopefully looks great too. Any screenshots please!
Great stuff!
I was really missing the Action screen from TyTN II.
The only problem I noticed was the camera app will not start in this menu.
Also BT is started as "visible" - good if you want to receive something quickly from an unpaired phone, but not good if you want to start it for longer time such as using BT HF and be visible for all.
Pretty good. I like it, but i can't find any options....I can't find the folder it was installed to either lol.
Is there eny way to use another button for this?
Tks
ok some answers here.
its installed in windows dir because some files require that.
you can change the application launched in regestry, will post reg file later, as im typing on my x1 at the moment.
i will look into bluetooth, if there is some commandline i can use with the bt app, otherwise you can point the regfile to start the application caalled btswitcher.cab (search for it) in that you can choose not visable.
you can make a shortcut to action screen, place it in program, and use ae button plus to allocate another button to it.
regarding the camera its made for my swe rom, so you must change it in the reg file.
you will find all the button in regestry here
\\\registry\HKLM\Software\HTC\Biotouch\ActionScreen\
The app works flawlessly thank you. I got 2 questions:
1 - Can i change the time-out time. Can it stay longer after i press the button.
2 - Can i change the buttons. Assigning programs to them, for example?
Editted the camera path to CameraRunner.exe to work on my x1a.
This is a very cool app which i think i will use for long.
Thanks smaberg!

sorry, time out can not be changed. The button graphics you can edit if you know how, the program launched when you press a button can easy be changed in regestry as descibed above.
Installed to my storage card at first but didn't work. Then tried again, but this time installing to device and it was ok. So it's gotta be installed to device?
WOW ..just.. wow dude....seriously. The more i use it the more i'm impressed. I can't believe i used my Xperia for so long without it . It ahs a problem with landscape mode though...can this be fixed, or is it something in my phone?

This cab, will let you choose first time you run it, after that it only starts up bluetooth, with the choice you made the first time.
And by the way no landscape support!
how about making this a penal?
great job though.
hey random idea, how cool will it be if you could bring up the "action screen penal" and some how activate an animation to spin the coloms around and have the ability to add contacts or apps? like the toshiba TG01 only simple.
I am starting the official "smaberg we want landscape support" campaign.
