to protect... or not to protect - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

a question for those of you who've had their Execs for a little while now: what's the screen like? I was paranoid about scratching mine with the stylus so put a screen protector after a day or two.
problem is it feels so thick that I might as well have thrown a big blanket over the screen... the exec doesn't notice the stylus unless I press really quite hard, so it might be defeating the purpose anyway
what do people think?
is there anyone who has been using theirs for a while without a protector who could say what the screen is like now?

you should use the screen protector. otherwise your screen will look like mine... however, i use it too much...
i've made a mistake and bought a GOOD protector when i noticed the damage on the screen.
So don't be that stupid as me and buy it before it's too late.
BTW, i bought one from www.Innopocket.com and it is still on my screen for last 6 months...
It is non glare, very hard surface, thin protector.
Writing is exactly the same as without it. Screen visibility is much better WITH it, thanx to it's non reflective surface.
buzz

Agree with buzz - you can be as carful as u want but dust on screen makes stylus scratchy.
Having said that, for my last few XDA's they all got scratched, THEN I put a protector on and they look as good as new!

I have had 5 or 6 different pocket pc's over time all of them for at least a year, i never ever used a screen protector and when i sold them they were almust as new without scratches.
My universal wont get a screen protector on that gives me a bad picture quality. i wanna enjoy the great screen on the device, not walking around with a bad screen so the next owner can have a good screen.
just my two cents

the best screen protectors are made by martin fields....you wont even know its there!
go here to buy... www.doml.com

yeah - that's the type i'm using... although i'm really not getting on with it - like i say, it feels really thick, and seems to make the screen far less responsive
i spent quite a bit on it, though - so am reluctant to try buying others, and gotta admit, i was hoping to hear that i could just pull it off and forget about it

you should get one from Brando HK. their ultra clear screen protector is the best protector I have ever used on earth.

Yes you should use a screen protector.
Not only does it protect screen it also reduces glair very usefull if you use GPS. I got mine from www.proporta.com ther also do a nice case.
Regards
Colin Bate

I had a wallaby for 12 months & a himalaya for 18 months, both without protectors & both looked fine when it came time to sell. I carried them in my pocket with the screen facing my leg. As you can close the screen on the exec, I'm even less concerned.
However, the anti glare part sounds like a good thing
;-)

screen protectors

how many of you guys are using screen protectors? im using one, but it keeps getting dirty every 2 weeks. im beginning to think if its even necessary to have one for my device.
It depends on what you mean by dirty. In a way you have answered your own question. If you didn't have a screen protector, your screen is potentially left open to abrasive scratches. My understanding is that once a screen is scratched, tough. It's much easier to replace a protector than a damaged screen.
I didn't realise how delicate screen protectors were when I applied the one that came with the MDA. I've just replaced my original thin protector with a Hightec one from durasec £7.95 from Ebay. They also do thinner ones for less. Like everything in life, you get what you pay for.
Bottom line is the standard motto. Prevention is better than cure.
I am using a Covertec one, and it is fine since a while (more then 2 month).
Boxwave
I'm very happy with the Boxwave clear protector.
I wouldnt go without my brando screen protector ... been using them since my P900 had no problems with dirt or scratches ..
Brando
I use Brando as well. It's the best.
I use 3M, is't 3M the best?
I'm using the brando ultra clear but the application was fudged up; for some reason there was already dust on the screen protector despite it still being seal . I peeled it off, start applying when I realized that it was leaving marks on the screen.
Washed it then reapplied and in the process, I managed to drop my cutter on it , blade first, and there's a small scratch on one corner.
Definitely going to have to have another go. With respect to clarity and responsiveness, I find it to be unresponsive if the application was poor but otherwise, suits me fine and nobody could tell it was applied except due to the fact that there's a scratch on it. Anyone got any tips? I washed with cool water and no detergents. Should I use any detergents?
what kinda protectors u guys use, i mean thin or hard. I had a belkin thin screen protector on my jam and it worked perfectly for more than a year, then i sodl the device and got the O2 XDA mini s, now i am looking for some decent screen protector.
what do u guys recommend, hard or thin?
This is probably heresy, but I have had my phone for 6 months and have never used a protector and there isn't one scratch. I travel about 80% a year for work to boot. But it usually travels in my pocket as opposed to a bag or something.
cool
i was waiting to hear that...6 months in your pocket and no scratch? thats pretty good..because i keep mine in my pocket all the time..if i ever throw it in a bag..i use the case it came with.
I just got a Martin Shields and love it. Took a little getting used to having to press a little harder, but it's great and I can't even tell it's on there.
by the way, how do I uninstall the old screen protector?
It has many scratchs over it and even more dust particles under it...
I'm using the BoxWave ClearTouch screen protector. I love it. I can barely tell it's on. I highly recommend it. It was kind of a pain to get on properly, but what screen protector isn't.

Best screen protector?

Zagg Invinsible shield?
Brando?
CP SCREEN PROTECTOR?
Other?
Which one is least visible and leaves no bubbles?
Expert Shield is by far the best i have come across.
shouldn't this be posted in Blackstone accessories ?
The best screen protector is BRANDO protector,
always buying this and definitely the best.
Durable, you can wash them and reuse, etc...

Proporta !!!
Hey ,
This one works realy fine for me . Not the easiest to put on.
But seems indistructible and washable.
And looks very cool on my Blackstone.

better think twice before using a mirrored screen protector! yes they do look cool, but the glare makes the hd impossible to use outside or in bright light conditions (much worse than normal), and occasionally frustrating in normal light. they also magnify fingerprints and smudges horribly. i'm constantly rubbing mine against my shirt to clean it
i bought a pack of two and gave one to my daughter and it didnt last the day before she pulled it off. i'm considering a brando non-mirrored in the next week or two.. i really dont like it. ifyour in a dimly lit office all day, it might work for you
Vikuiti DQC160 3M Screen Protector for HTC Touch HD, by far the best screen protector i have used. Not even one scratch after 2 months and very easy aplication.

This might be a stupid question, but that screen protector isn't on the us version of amazon. Google will not translate the page either... Therefore, how does a non-dutch speaking person order one of these?
I really like 3m products.. Anyone?
I'm quite happy with EXIM screen protectors :

My vote goes to Brando crystal clear - very good, can't see it there, and touch is the same.

I have tried almost all the above mentioned screen protectors but Martin fields and i can say with pride that if you want your device to last for years looking same GO for INVISIBLE SHIELD. With brando, you have to change every few month otherwise the scratches start to appear on the protector
Yeah, but the Invisible Shield just looks so bleh. No way to get the film to fit flush along the border of the screen where it meets the body of the phone. The film just floats in that area, basically creating a void that appears as an air bubble along the whole perimeter of the screen.
They really weren't thinking when they made the cut for that film. No reason not to have made one dedicated piece for the screen, separate from the side of the phone body. If they took one second to have actually looked at the phone itself, they would have realized this.
It does help give a better grip/handle on the phone, due to the silicon material. However, it just looks ... eh. Certainly not invisible. At all. It does change the look of the phone. Looks much cheaper. But I guess scratches'll do that too.
That silicon material also changes the feel of interacting with the touch screen. It does have some give to it. So it feels like you get more compression as the stylus sinks into it. And your fingers/stylus will not glide as easily as you might expect for this type of input method. It's not a hindrance, per se, but it will be different.
Installed the front and the bottom piece. Stopped there. Didn't want that glossy rubber-like material covering the flat-black rubber-tone finish of the back cover and the brushed aluminum finish surrounding the lens.
Would really like a dedicated film for the screen that kept the same physical feel of the screen - more like a glassy/plastic film - and a separate one that protected all the glossy black lacquer finished pieces.
The Zagg Invisible Shield is rubbish. It tries to cover the screen and the chrome bits around the screen with the same piece, so it doesn't fit as well as it should

I guess you got the limited bling edition.
are there any anti-glare screen protector around, like the iphone one? Been searching around but couldn't find any, would be good if there are plans for it.
there are many, almost all manufactures have a clear and a non-reflecting version. I use Exim crystal clear protector and Im very, very happy!! I have it since the first days I bought my blackstone (I bought it on November, 21st) and it lasts until now, without any issue!! I'm using my phone full-time, about 6 hours a day, non-stop, so I think this is a really good protection! and it looks like it's not there so, decide yourself, the problem with non-reflective ones is, that you have not such a clear view, but it's only minimal. For me anyway, I need to have a very clear one, cause I'm most of the time inside buildings and I want for watching movies, have absolute clear screen^^ that's it

thanks... but when i clicked to add one to the basket, google stopped translating, so i was stuck. so i ordered a brando protector. the mirrored one was way cool and very impressive, but i drive a lot, and it made my hd unusable when the sun was out. so bad that i pulled it off and my hd is unprotected untill the brando arrives

Going without screen protector

I've taken it off, everything's much nicer now, colors pop out much more than they did. The question is - I've heard that with the D1, even the stylus would inflict scratches... is HD any different?
from what has been commented here on this forum a couple of months ago is that the blackstone would scratch also, with as little as stylus usage.. dont know if anyone put it to the test, but thats what has been said atleast.
yes iv scratched mine with the stylus
i would recomend using a screen protector
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the screen protector you took off was well used? Every time I replace my screen protector I notice a huge difference but there isn't a big difference between the raw screen and the "new" screen protector
Yeah indeed. Going to put another one tommorow, after just 3 days without a screen protector I've started noticing very tiny and thin scratches on the surface, from just using the stylus.
Cytokine,
Get a good quality screen protector. The ones on eBay being sold for $1.00-$7-8.00 are not that good at all.
The best screen protectors are of the following brands:
1. Boxwave - www.boxwave.com
2. Javoedge - www.javoedge.com
3. a few more that i cant recollect.
I use the first 2 companies, and they have been the best so far, no problems at all! very thin and very clear.
I have had numerous shields on and one decided to bare back it. I never use anything other then my finger on my screen so no scratches on screen at all. On my other HD stylus did scratch screen. No nail just finger and I still have perfect screen.
Threads already exist regarding this issue and overwhelmiong response was that screen portection was required unless you want scratches

Scratched Screen!

Somehow i have managed to get a scratch of prob 8mm tall x 1mm wide x 1mm
deep. is the front protected by something or is that the screen?
its hasnt gone all the way through what ever it is. but i can tell its scratched due to
the light when moving the phone about.
Anyway to fix this ie a new front?
screen works as normal.
Cheers Rob.
why would you want to fix? it seems like a minuscule scratch.
Its near the middle of the screen. There must have been some grit on it when i put it in the
pouch :?

I doubt it. It's hardened glass. It must have been something heavy or very sharp. The only fix i know of is a new glass cover or may be a very good screen protector
My N1 got a bunch of hairline scratches from my the old ladies earring, I put a name brand name screen protector on it and they're not visible anymore. So that is an option for you if it really bothers you that much, my N1's scratches drove me nuts because they were right at the top.
I have a scratch on my screen too...It was bothering me at first, but quickly forgot about it.
Not even visible.

I agree and would try a screen protector. I found a Fellowes generic protector was best at hiding a big scratch on an old iPAQ I have. The screen on that is quite different but I don't see why it wouldn't work on the HD2.
Cheers people, I think I have a few protectors at work. only cheap ones. Will let you know if this helps.

I, too, have a nice scratch in the screen. Can't remember what happened, or what would have caused it. When I realized it was there I immediately shopped for screen protectors, and used member reccomendations from XDA forums. I purchased a recommended protector based on those recommendations and some further research elsewhere online. My results? DO NOT purchase the HD2 product from Gadget Shieldz dot com. It will somehow magnify the resolution refresh and create a rainbow pattern on the nice, hi-rez screen. Aarrgh! Does someone have a better product suggestion??

I'm pretty keen on Skinomi protectors, they have a Lifetime Warranty.
http://www.skinomi.com/
The only thing is that the HD2 protector doesn't protect the bottom part below the buttons. Wasn't an issue for me but if you want all over protection go with BestSkinsEver.
Thanks for the suggestion, IC. Both products look the same as others, but if the pattern isn't there (and sensitivity isn't compromised) I will be a happy camper. I'll update on this forum with the results!
anyone tried the ZAGG Invisible Shield? It looks nice on the ads but i'd like to listen from a owner...
I have used the Zagg shield for about 3 months then happily removed it from my HD2, After a while the protector started to get an 'orange peel' effect to it and as a whole it was very reflective. I also didnt like the tactile feel to it, it felt quite rubbery and so when draging your finger across the screen sometimes it would feel choppy in a sense.
I am now using the wrapsol HD2 protector (am currently writing a full review for it so check back soon) but just quickly i love it and alreayd am more than happy with it i dont even know it is on the phone it feels like glass to the touch.

[Q] Screen protector

Sad day in the life of SlightlyAmused. Put the phone in my coat pocket and it happened. One good size scratch down the edge, now it don't bug me too much but I figure it would be best to get a zagg on this bad boy asap. The problem is I cannot find any online!
Does anyone know where I can find some?
Also, for those who use them, will zaggs make my screen feel "draggy" or does it still feel natural?
Did you scratch the screen or the phone plastics? The screen's supposed to be scratch proof.
The screen. I have read that if there is sand between a credit card or something it can happen. I think its just resistant and not proof.
I had a Zagg on my N900 and it did feel a little rubbery/draggy. Either you get used to it or it wears off, not sure which but the feeling goes away.
I really want to find a screen protecter that is exactly like the ones supplied with the HTC Hermes and Kaiser in the box. Best screen protectors i ever had. Barely even noticed they were there and they lasted the time i had the phones.
I found a review on Steinheil protectors and they look good. Sadly they don't have any for Defy. Oh well, maybe next month.
Just be careful around sand and hard surfaces. I have read alot online so far that people have scratched the glass on other devices with gorilla with only sand in their pocket or on the beach face down. Everything else doesn't seem to effect it.
Hi,
for my Defy, i ordered Vikuiti (TM) DQC-160 3M
I hope it works well
DING!
Looks great and the reviews are all pretty good. The whole finger print thing dosnt really bother me as I usually wipe it off after I use it, or during it (hard to play casino kid 2 with finger prints imo).
Hopefully it covers a little of the scratch I have on the screen
Thanks!
and you believed them?

hmmm, those that believe that Corning Gorilla Glass is scratch proof are gullible, and mislead by Motorolas claim that the Defy is dust scratch and water therefore life proof, I have a Samsung Preston here that begs to differ thanks to the dirty big diagonal scratch down it's face
and I also have a still camera that Olympus swears to be "waterproof" despite the angry protests of almost everyone else who bought one which just goes to show you can never believe what a company says about their product
if you're wise you would fit a screen protector to it the very moment you unbox it like I did with my Sex1
and will do with my new Defy When I get it
(decision made!)
I wish realook made them for the defy. They are by far my favorite
Sent from my DEFY using XDA app
imo phone never feels as responsive with a screen protector on - I have always used them when I had non touch screen phones, and when I got my Hero I tried a number of different ones and always felt they weren't working very well, when I just decided to start using it without one, it felt like a different phone. I haven't bothered with the Defy, not because of the scratch proof claims. I think the best defence is just to get in the habit of putting it in an empty pocket etc.
I feel the same about them until I put a realook protector on my vibrant. It's pretty awesome.
Sent from my DEFY using XDA app
One I found in my search for protectors was skinomi have it ordered but still waiting.
Why not put your phone in an empty pocket? Hell, I did that with my dumbphones before touchscreen was a readily available feature.
Plus, isn't putting a screen protector on Gorilla Glass like putting tissue paper over kevlar?
for what little protection
where work is always better ... and is not an office
if you happen to a simple scratch , throw away the tissue paper
I am so used to just tossing it in my pocket that I dont really think about whats in there. When I rocked my BB9700 I would always throw it in the holster and I think I will be looking around tomorrow for either a generic screen protector or case for the phone.
I must admit the phone can take a beating.
I got a couple of decent sized scratches from a lighter in my pocket within 3 days (the perils of smoking!).
I just received my skinomi a couple of days ago and am most impressed so far. Using the wet one, I have no bubbles and cannot see the scratches now. It feels smooth on the finger, shows less finger prints and I have lost no accuracy. I will be interested to see how well the self healing thing works, as every other cover I have used ends up covered in scratches within a week.
I will post how it holds up over time

I can understand that. My new years resolution is to quit smoking.....year 15 of failed new years. I'm starting to think this whole "sticking to it" isnt for me.
I've had the skinomi on for a few weeks now. It is the most impressive protector I have ever seen.
I can't see the original scratch, nor can I see fingerprints much. I can see better in light and it feels better than the gorilla glass- smooth but rubbery with no grab. It is as responsive as stock and has no dulling effect on the screen.
I do have some scratches-more like pits from having it in my pocket with keys and a lighter and other stuff while climbing around at work. I realized I had my full bodyweight on it and I feared I would crack the glass, and it's hard to describe how I knew I had given it way beyond normal abuse, and I have cracked a screen before with half the pressure- these pits haven't gone away so I ordered another one without hesitation even though I can only notice them on angles, and even then not much (I could have gone for the lifetime warranty replacement but I feel I really pushed it beyond its purpose, and it's too much hassle -with the GET25 discount it's only $8 anyway, and I was getting one for my wife's Desire that I gave her when I got the Defy). If I had my Desire in my pocket that day, I would guarantee it would have cracked.
I can see no other scratches, and one's I have had just fade away in days, as it is self healing.
Does anyone know if there is any good "anti-finger print" screen protector?
The finger print just drive me nuts...
The anti-glare one from PDAir works a hoot!
