The techical document says hard resetower + reset.
But it work like a soft reset!
How is it possible?

To perform a hard reset
• Press and hold both SOFT KEYS shown enclosed by circles in the picture below. Keep these keys pressed, and at the same time, use the stylus to lightly press and hold the RESET button on the left side of your device. Press either 0 to restore to factory default or X to exit the hard reset process. reset button

soft reset - there is small hole at the bottom right, use stylus to pin into it
hard reset - same as soft reset + press the power button

Otherwise if I remember correctly hold both context keys (softkeys), do a reset with stylus (still hold the soft keys). After menu appears release the keys and press green phone button.

I've read the manual, but i am unable to HARD RESET my HTC Herald, I always SOFT RESET the phone because I have software applications problems - but I want to do a full hard reset, hoping it fixes the phone - (the SOFT RESET doesnt work).
I know you're supposed to hold the reset button down with your stylus after holding the two soft keys, but the moment I touch the Reset button with my stylus it immediatly soft resets...
Any ways to get around this?
you should be pressing the reset button WHILE holding the two soft keys. Make sure you keep holding them. The hard reset confirmation screen won't appear until you release them though

witch keys are the soft keys
On my Herald one only needs to press the two soft-keys, NOT the reset button on start up. In conclusion, 1. turn off device 2. turn on device and directly press the two soft-keys. By doing this at least I get some text on the screen and that I should press send to do a hard reset.
erm ... izzit like tht hard reset?
1. Pull out the stylus
2. With the device turned on, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN and ENTER buttons, then press the RESET button with the stylus tip.
3. Release the VOLUME DOWN and ENTER buttons when Hard Reset message appears, then press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the hard reset.

To do a hard reset.
Press both soft keys and insert stylus into soft reset button and press.
Release the soft reset button and keep pressing the soft keys.
When the "This operation will delete all your personal data, to manufacturer default" appears on screen.
Press Green call button to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel.
The bootloader is invoked by pressing down the Power and Voicedialer buttons simultaneously, and using the stylus at the same time to press the RESET button at the left side. Continue pressing the two buttons for a few seconds after pressing and releasing the reset button until the bootloader screen appears.

Softresetbutton is the small hole on the left side of your device. On the top on the left side youve got voice command, under this the volume and down at the botton youve got the softresetbutton.
take the stylus to use it.
