Universal forums: What others are there? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Can someone please tell me what other good forums there are for the Universal and JasJar. Traffic is very low at present (as can be expected), so I'd like to ensure I'm trolling them all.
WM5 forums may also be useful (info on how to skin keyboard, backup solutions, preferred apps, tips n tricks, reg hacks, etc)

Only buzzdev.net as far as I've seen, but I haven't really had a proper look. And that's a very quiet forum anyway. (But a very friendly one )

Tekguru has some helpful threads.
I have found tekguru.co.uk to also be invaluable in many aspects concerning the Universals and HTC devices in general.

There are a good number of Jasjar users in the PocketPC forum at www.howardforums.com. Because of the K-Jam's recent release there is a lot of K-Jam discussion going on there right now, but there's some Jasjar information as well.

today plugins

ok, can u all post ur today plugins, for wm5, I want them all, to be posted here as cabs, I think it wud be handy to have them all centralised,
thanks
or.. you could visit the pocketpc software sites and download them right there
true, how ever, I wud have to search, I'm very lazy, lol, but seriously it is people on this forum that use the devices, most for numerous years, some also can develop them, this topic is for them to be posted but for ideas to be posted, there are always sum new ideas floating on this site that have been implemented, ie vj and his wonderfull aps, to name one developer,
thanks
Exec Man, it would be handy to have Today Plugins centralised, but remember that the majority of these are commercial thingies. Those that are free, are generally available here: http://www.freewareppc.com/
So really the better thing to do is start a thread on today screens and get ideas. For the Magician and generally, I very strongly recommend this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=26468&highlight=
I only learnt how to program on these phones because I wanted a couple of Today plugins to do some stuff I hadn't found available elsewhere. I still have a couple of Today Plugins in development but slightly on pause (VJAudioNotes and VJEphemeris), and many more to start

hello, i'm new here

Hello,
today i got my MDA pro.
Now i'd like to knew all about my new "pda".
I upgraded my mda to the Firmware from 12/2005 wich i found on the t-mobile-germany website.
I knew, all the questions i ask here are somewhere answered in this forum, but i think a link-list will help newbies.
My questions:
1. can i really use another firmware from the another provider (o2, orange ...)
2. wich is the "best" firmware?
3. I search some good internetpages about the mda pro/universal where i can find a lot of software. Du you know some pages?
4. Do you have some advices for me (hints, must-have-software...)?
Thanks a lot
Erik
Firstly:
Read This:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4534
Particularly point 2.
Then read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=31697
Which is now a bit old and redundant.
Both of the above are always at the top of this forum.
To answer your questions.
1. Yes, lots are available on the Wiki FTP site. Make sure you follow the process and understand if you have a locked phone. I personally dont cross upgrade, and am happy with the imate latest ROM with Push Email. Another is due out soon that will provide bluetooth headsets.
2. "best"!!! sometimes the one with with most functionality is not the most stable. I havent tried the others, and have stayed with Imate. I used to have the O2 XDAII and again stayed with O2, up until we got some hacked Roms that went above and beyond the only supported releases.
3. www.handango.com www.ppcfreewares.com www.buzzdev.net www.lakeridge.com www.spbsoftwarehouse.com
It really depends on what software you want. Just make sure that they are WM5 compatible. There are various forums here that discuss various software and its functionality on the devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32698&highlight=software+wm5+working
is a detailed forum.
4. good advice, monitor these forums daily, make friends with buzz and vijay, be nice to people be good to your mum

Calling all Wizard user!!!! New PPC user needs help!!!

Hello friends,
Im a new PPC user. I have a T-mobile Wizard. There are a lot of freeware available for the Wizard. Since there are too many pages to read and a lot of freeware to compare, I need some help from Wizard users who had their Wizard for a while now. There are only a couple of things I need from the Wizard.... Outlook Email, Internet, and a good Iphone Theme. Does it makes sense to upgrade to the WM6? What are the benefits of WM6? Other than that I just need my Wizard to be really quick.
Thank you friends in advance and I really hope you can help a new windows mobile user.

Well, you will need to spend some time reading if you want to glean anything from this site.
Anyhow, I would recommend upgrading to WM6. A few reasons being is it has HTML capable Outlook (since you mentioned you'd be using that). It's also less buggy, faster and just more stable than WM5 too.
So, you can leave it as-is, and have a perfectly usable device. Or plan on spending a lot of time reading, reading, and reading some more to upgrade and customize. I'd say it's quite worth it though.
Start in the WIKI. It has links to everything that will get your phone unlocked and upgraded.
Just please keep in mind that this site appreciates those that help themselves first. If you do get stuck on something and can't find the answer, don't hesitate to ask.
Good luck!
Maybe more time reading and less time on the '!' key would help.
I'm going to disagree with TaurusBullba on WM6 stability and speed. I tried a number of WM6 ROMs on my G4 Wizard and found them to have a more issues than my original O2 ROM. That's not to say the O2 ROM didn't have issues, but I found most WM6 ROMs to have more / more serious issues. My advice would be to look at a thread for a ROM you might like to install. You will almost certainly find users stating any issues they're having.
Furthermore, on the ROM front, it requires a lot more reading and a lot less '!' , so I would sit back and be content with WM5 for the moment whilst reading the forum.
You will find the most comprehensive iPhone threads in the General board of this forum, although I believe there is a thread in one of the Wizard boards too.
If you don't mind paying, I've found Opera is a good replacement to Pocket IE.

Thank you for the information. Im actually very familiar with opera. I had it installed on my blackberry and is so much faster. I think I'll Stick with WM5 since everywhere I read they mention that it has a lot more bugs I think I'll wait untill I get more familiar with my wizard and also when the fix the bugs on the WM6. Thank you guys for the replys.

And lastly, i really don't know where to start from as far as learning the phone and etc. Is there any thread where i can learn more about the phone?
thanks whole lot!

I'm relatively new to the Hermes 8525 board myself.
The first place you should look is at the Hermes Wiki page - lots of general info to get you going - and then detailed as you require, for either minor upgrading - or flashing, upgrading, etc.
Here is the link for the wiki page
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
If your phone did not come with any manuals, etc - you should search for the user manual - it is available all over the net, and available for download in PDF fromat.
Search is your friend - there are lots of very helpful people on these boards, and the majority of them have been where you are. But, you need to search the boards - read the "STICKY" posts at the top of each board.
Another member on this board also directed me towards this site - which answered the majority of my noobie 8525 questions.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php
Read as much as you can - there is lots of info.
Good luck and welcome

Where to start?

Hi all,
I inherited an old Orange SPV m500, and found this forum while searching for a way to unlock it from Orange. It worked and was very helpful, so you have my thanks for that!
Then I see all this skinning business and I would love to customise the phone a bit more; there's several things I'd like to do including installing a bigger dialler, a better 'homepage', etc, etc. So I went ahead and installed what seemed to be the latest ROM I could use (the WWE_O3 Cottula rom, which is the last one with a working camera from the looks of it - I need the camera). That's all fine and dandy and worked nicely (although it often tells me I've just inserted a memory card when I haven't).
However, all this extra software is an absolute mystery. It's all circular references which isn't helped by the lack of clear English (no offence, I know it's not everybody's mother tongue). I simply can't seem to find a start point that explains what software does what, how to install it, etc. All the threads seem to assume that you already know the software and what it does. Even the 'wiki' for the magician is limited to descriptions of upgrading the ROM. JMLToday Touchflo Manilla 3d 2d etc. etc.
I don't have a very modern device, so I don't expect to be able to install all of the latest whizzbangs on it, and to be honest I don't need a huge bundle of features, but I'd love to make my phone easier and faster to use and I know you guys have put huge effort into software to do just that. I just can't figure out what I need or how to go about getting it.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome to the forum xobby. First of all xda-developers is mainly a technical forum to help in upgrading and tweaking your device. There may be threads involving applications but , like you said, it's not very organized. So the first thing you have to do is use the search function to look for what you are looking for. If you can't find anything then you might ask nicely from the members in the forum for help. If you are looking for specific applications then there are other sites that is more suited for searching for applications.
I would suggest that you do a general search of the internet for programs, skins, etc that you would like to install in your unit and where to download them. It requires a lot of searching and looking I know but that is just the way it is.
Good luck!
By the way. Since you upgraded to WM6.1 by Cotulla, you will have no problem installing almost all of the newest applications available for windows mobile the same as those for the newer more expensive phones.
