Spectec SDW-820 on Magician - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hi everybody, I've just recieved my wireless LAN card and I'm having troubles finding documentation on how to do what I want to do. I actually want to do three things with my PDA once WiFi is working.
A I'd like to be able to ActiveSync through WiFi instead of connecting the cable. My laptop has a wireless LAN card, but I don't know how or if I need to set up a special connection between the two.
B I would like to be able to connect with my Magician through my laptop, so I can use its internet connection on my Magician.
C My Magician should also be able to connect to a wireless access point at my college, maybe I can have two network settings on my Magician so I wouldn't have to switch between them all the time?
Thanks very much from a Magician newbie .

Alright, scrap B, I managed to do that but I had to turn off WEP... If anyone knows how to keep the connection secure, let me know . But syncing still doesn't work via WiFi.
Edit: Scrap A as well, with a little bit of tinkering I think I got it done .

I can get all the items working but using my Wi-Fi network and not an Ad-Hoc.
All you need to do is go into Settings>Connections>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks> Here you select the "Internet" for both. This way you I use IE or email etc it connects into the internet and when I select Active Sync it also connects via the internet setting where it see's my "ActiveSync" running on my PC and connects. Make sure the tick box is tick against "Allow Network" in the activesync settings.
As for the Work side of things i dont have a wi-fi network but from memory once you set up the "Network Cards" on your PPC it will connect to which ever one it see's first, someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Hi, my spectec suddenly stopped working. The list show my wifi as available but am unable to go on the net. I have tried reinstalling the driver, doesn't work. This started yesterday, I have not changed or install anything else. Could it be a faulty card or faulty mini ? My wifi is working great on my notebook. WEP is off. What else can I do ? Thanks.

If all fails I try a hard reset and only install the Wi-Fi driver and go from there.
Do a complete backup with say Sprite Backup that way you can restore your PDA back to original.
The other option is to use the modified driver from the E300 Card found in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27069&highlight=spectec+e300
But you need to uninstall the SPECTEC driver first.

Thanks ampda. Have uninstalled the spectec and will use the E300 as suggested. See how this works. Will only go to hard reset as a last resort or perhaps just wait for the universal ???

Hellow, can you learn me how to connect active sync via wifi please ? Thank you. I have that same card

Alright, on your PC ActiveSync:
- File -> Connection Settings. I marked the USB and Ethernet options.
On your PDA:
- Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Network cards. Here select the network your PDA should connect to. It should connect to "The Internet", on the tab "Network key" I have selected Open and Disabled, because I use an ad-hoc connection.
That should do it, just hit sync on your PDA !
You may have to disable and enable your wireless connection on your PC to get things to work.

On my active sync 4 i don't see ethernet options[/b]

I'm using version 3.8 and I see that option :O! Here, let me take a screenshot for you.

ActiveSync 4 has no syncing over network, it has been taken out. Go back to 3.8 if you wanna use it.

OK thank you

You know MS developers have o get AS4 ready for the WM 5.0 release because WM 5.0 needs AS4. They were a little lazy so they got deadline problems and have to take network sync out for now. They will put it back in in a future update but AS4 as well as AS4.1 dont offer it right now.

it don't ghet it to work

ActiveSync Over WIFI

ActiveSync Over WIFI - does anyone know if this is possible.
I use WIFI at home on my XDAII for the internet, but would like to Sync it with my laptop without having to drag the cable home (or buy another usb cable)
Any ideas ?
Cheers
Yes, sure you could do it! Just make sure ActiveSync Connection settings on your desktop PC include Ethernet (right click on ActiveSync icon on the taskbar, choose Connection Settings and click on Allow network). Then, run ActiveSync on XDA-II and choose same 'synchronise via Network' setting - there is one on the 'Advanced' tab I think (can't say exactly, as my wife plays Lines on it right now ) - just type in your PC NETBIOS name (I guess it will be there already if you connected via USB before). I've tried it and it worked straight away (although takes few secs more to connect).

YOU BEUT ! I'D KISS YOU ... if
1. you were female
2. you were good looking
3. you were in close vacinity!
I had to run active sync, go to tools > Options > Server
And add "//myname" and untick SSL
However, my WIFI network card is set to MOBILE WEB GPRS (for IE and MSN, inbox etc) and it wanted WAP network GPRS so tried to dial up.
I changed the WIFI card to be WORK instead of INTERNET and it worked great.
Not sure if I have WORK and INTERNET set up correctly, it is basically how it came setup for GPRS access. But I don't mind changing it over now and then unless someone knows a better way?
(interesting that I managed to do an o2 Active update via the WIFI card! and not WAP GPRS - something I can't do while connected via USB? but can surf via USB )
Anyway... RESULT ! cheers
Well, obviously not female (while nothing is impossible in modern world - you could change sex, not only ROM version in your XDA ). As for the Wi-Fi card setup - it's quite simple, you'd better set it to 'Work' always unless you are connecting from Starbucks, and then change properties of 'work' connection, checking 'Connects to Internet' box and entering your proxy address. All these 'ISP' and 'Work' settings seemed to be pretty confusing to me first time until I understood how it works. You could not browse network through an USB cable (a mystery to me, since it's a normal PPP connection!), so Wi-Fi is probably the best option for all tasks - synchronisation, browsing etc.
Thanks for your help, I'll have a play

Connecting to internet through Active Sync

I am trying to configure my XDA2 to connect to my PC and surf the internet via a BT connection. I can Sync via BT but when I try to set up my connection it keeps asking for a phone number despite me saying it is over a Bluetooth connection and my IP is broadband. Sorry if this has been asked but I did search for any info on this.

Why do you need to setup connection for since it's already connected with ActiveSync via BT? Basically once you get connection between your device & activeSync, that's all the step you did. Unless a firewall has stopped your device from accessing to the internet; if it's the case, create exception for your activeSync, and retry browsing with your device.
hope this helps.
regards.
thanks for yor reply, Each time I try to connect the the interneet on my device it keeps trying to connect via GPRS and not through my PC via BT....
Go to ActiveSync, open the options menu & go to Rules tab.
At the bottom, you will find Pass Through Conenction, make sure its set to The Internet and not Work
Cheeeers 8)
thats it, it finally works. Thanks very much.
Glad to hear that, thomo
You're welcome anytime, dude
activesync through bt
go to setup in bluetooth and select the activesync in bt
pair the pda or ppc
give password
in wm2005 select activesync through the bt

I'm having a similar problem and have effected the setting as above, however IE on my IIs says "the page you are looking for cannot be found". My computer connects fine and I have the same issue when trying to connect the device via WiLan, although I do connect to the network.
I've been trying to fiddle with the settings for a few days now but no success...anyone out there got any ideas.
Many thanks
I have mastered it now, I sync using BT on my device, leave it connetced, close Active sync on my XDA 11, Click on IE and the device connects through my PC, super duper.........
Thanks, this is what i am looking for now. I will try it
i can now only online with cable, not through Bluetooth connection
go into the advantage settings for connections
there you should be able to change the network back to my isp insted
of my network
bluetooth-internet
Hai...iam new here..i have got O2mini and would like to connect to internet via bluetooth...
i try using usb cable and activesync program to serve internet and its working.
...i succesfully connect my pc and ppc via bluetooth by using ppc activesync but when try connet to internet its still go to gprs..
pls help me...TQ
like i said again and again in this thread it's all about which network is picked in advantage settings under network connections in systems
I also tried to make a connection to the internet with activesync and usb. But with my mda doesn't work. iexplorer says the page you are looking for cannot be found. But my ppc says "connectivity the internet Pc connection". What are the settings on your ppc, so i can check?
Somebody help me.
test with ping
and maybe messenger to see if it's a dns issue
and if people use pocketplus they prob should make sure that it's not set to close insted of minimizing otherwise the connection would most likely be closed when they close activesync
Thank you very much. You solved my problem.

Using GPRS while ActiveSync (USB) is connected

Just as the title reads, I'd like to know if there is a way to have ActiveSync enabled while at the same time piping all data traffic using GPRS.
I use Pocket Controller which requires ActiveSync to be used. The problem is my internet connection associated with my computer is always loaded with data traffic. I use my K-JAM for IM applications and would much like for it to connect to the internet via the GPRS connection I have.
I have discovered that after the Pocket Controller establishes a connection with the K-JAM, if I disable the ActiveSync connection by going to Connection Setting and unchecking the "Allow USB Connections" check box, Pocket Controller continues to work, while at the same time I am able to use the GPRS connection on my PDA.
The problem with this is that, everytime I disconnect my K-JAM and reattach it, I have to enable the "Allow USB connections" option, then let ActiveSync detect the K-JAM only after which Pocket Controller will detect the K-JAM and then disable the "Allow USB connections" option again for GPRS to work.
I hope sombody can shed some light on this.
Upgrade to Activesync 4.5.0 Beta (works fine as far as I can tell, been using it for a while now) and you can select for the phone to continue using the radio while connected, it's just a check box.
Thanks for that bro. I'd much rather avoid any Beta versions. Tell me, would you happen to know if ActiveSync 4.2 supports this feature???
Also, I don't really use any Sync Features. The only reason I use ActiveSync is because I need a way to interface my K-JAM to the computer and install programs... that's about it. So given this situation, will ActiveSync Beta perform ok???

Use the beta man... no biggie.
Well as per your instructions, I used the BETA version v4.5 BETA 2.
After installation, I looked up the connection settings, and there is a check box which reads "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop"
Unfortunately, even though I have checked it, once I connect my K-JAM to it and go back to connection settings, the option disappears and just like with the previous versions of ActiveSync, I can't seem to use EDGE / GPRS while ActiveSync is enabled.
Can someone please help?
TIA
Well...try active sync 4.2! Because in my case it does it even though I don't wish to. There is no more Internet Pass Through, so GPRS connection is started as soon as I try to access a web page.
I actually would like to know how to stop it! I will maybe try 4.5 as the registry hacks I found for 4.2 don't work.
Easist way i got it to do that a while ago (when i didn't want it to ) was to set the network card as a "Work" connection.
Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Network Cards -> change "The Internet" to "Work" and try...
All from memory so post your results
I finally figured it out.
The ActiveSync didn't seem to work. Everytime you connect the Wizard to the computer, it is assigned an IP (in my case it is 169.254.2.1). In the Pocket Controller settings, set it to connect via TCP/IP and punch in the same IP address. You can have ActiveSync disconnected. Pocket Controller will connect to the Wizard and you can use GPRS to access the internet.

settings->connections->connections->advanced->select networks
there are some texts showing "programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using"
and a dropdownbox
select the dropdownbox item which is not called something like "my isp"
but pick the one thats called something like "my network"
then all programs trying to access the internet will be forced to use activesync as internet connection and if activesync is not connected they will fail!
if i am reading your post right you are trying to use ur ppc as a modem to connect to the internet?
If so, use these steps:
connect ppc to PC thru usb, let activesync do it's work
on PPC go to Start>Programs>Accessories and open the Internet Sharing program
After this is done, it should allow you top connect to the internet by using the PPC as a modem. It's a slow connection, but it works

it's empty it just show
add network connection
add vpn connection
setup my proxy
i use bluetooth mind you if you use usb you have to
check Enable advanced network functionality
in usb to pc though
and your pc activesync should be set to not block it
and your firewall should alow it
usually you don't need to change anything in settings to get internet with usb, try hard reset your ppc and reconnect. Also, IP in your pc shouldn't be specified (keep it automatic)

[solved] Q about settings for internet sharing

I'm trying to use the factory installed Internet Sharing (not the new HTC Wifi Router, not WMWifirouter, just the regular factory installed Internet Sharing) to get internet access on my PC via USB (not Bluetooth).
I've spent hours and hours reading and trying different things but it still does not work. Can someone please explain the settings they used to get this to work?
Settings for Active Sync?
Settings for Network Connections on PC?
Settings on phone?
I have tried all possible combinations of settings and am absolutely STUMPED. I'd appreciate ANY help.
FYI: My PC's running XP
EDIT:
So, I got the Internet Sharing to work and just wanted to share what I learned in case it helps someone else. I'm using the HD with stock WM 6.1 and a PC running XP with Active Sync 4.5.
My problem was that even after applying all the correct settings, Internet Sharing was never able to establish a connection (it kept saying "check USB connection"). I noticed in my PC under My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager that there was an exclamation point beside the phone network adapter, so I updated/uninstalled/reinstalled the driver with no success. This driver is normally automatically installed when you first install Active Sync and create a partnership with your phone, so then I decided to uninstall and reinstall Active Sync and then created a new partnership with my phone (I didn't have to worry about losing any of my synced contacts, notes, calender, texts, etc because I also sync with Microsoft MyPhone, which I highly recommend). Afterwards, I disconnected my phone from the PC and closed Active Sync. Then I used the following settings/steps and Internet Sharing worked flawlessly.
Here are the settings I used:
-in Active Sync: unchecked "allow usb connection", unchecked "allow connections to one of the following", "this computer is connected to" set to automatic, checked "open active sync when my device connects", checked "allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop"
-in PC: disable Windows Firewall and all other 3rd party firewalls
-in PC internet explorer: set LAN settings to "automatically detect settings" (in Firefox under Tools>Options>Advanced>Network>Settings set to "auto detect")
-in phone: under Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC checked "Active Sync", unchecked "enable faster data synchronization", checked "ask me first about UBS connection type when I connect the device to the PC"
With these settings:
-connect your phone to PC (on phone, dialog box should appear showing Active Sync checked, USB unchecked, Internet Sharing unchecked)
-nothing should happen at this point
-then in phone, launch Internet Sharing, set PC Connection to "USB", set Network Connection to whatever data network your phone uses, then press "connect" (the status will change from "disconnected" to "check USB connection"); wait about 15-20 seconds while your PC reacts (it takes this long only the first time you connect because the PC is installing the appropriate drivers)
-the Internet Sharing status should change to "connected" and now you can use the internet on your PC through the data connection on your phone. So simple if everything works properly.
FYI:
-if you go back to PC under My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager you will see your phone network adapter (no longer with an exclamation point) called "Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device"
-f you go to PC Network Connections you will see your new phone LAN connection
-if your phone falls asleep while connected, the internet connection does NOT get interrupted; I also received a text while it was connected with no problem
To Disconnect Internet Sharing:
-close all browsers, press disconnect on your phone, then unplug your phone from the PC
-you can now turn active sync back on by checking "allow usb connection" and turn your PC firewalls back on
Wow, sorry so long, hope it helps someone.

If your trying to do this at work, there is most likely a firewall setup so this wouldn't be possible unless your knew access codes etc for firewall
If this is with your home pc, when connecting pc to HD using usb you should automatically be presented with a synchronization screen from activesync for setting up a connection. Ensure you select 'allow wireless data connections on your device while it is connected to your computer' before finishing
And also :-
On the Touch HD
Start - Settings - Connections - USB to PC
Check Activesync and uncheck "enable faster data synchronisation"
Spent a couple of hours trying to connect before I did this.
Hope this works for you.
r
Andrew
Thanks guys for your responses.
I've already tried each one of those things. I'm at home with firewall disabled, have the correct boxes checked in Active Sync, have the correct connection settings on the phone, etc. I've tried all possible combinations.
When I go to My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager I even see the phone Network Adapter but it has an exclamation point beside it. So I try to update/uninstall/reinstall the driver and it still doesn't work. Do I need to manually install different USD Modem drivers?? This doesn't seem right because these drivers should automatically be installed when I installed Active Sync.
I'm gonna try to update everything e.g. xp service pack and uninstall/reinstall Active Sync, etc. Hopefully after all of that it will work.
