Memory Problem I think

I just bought an I Mate Jam from Expansys, fantastic piece of kit, far superior IMO than my XDAIIs, but i have just noticed that my built in storage shows as only being 7.6MB in total, now i only have 2 resco apps installed into storage but i am only left with 4MB free, and also when i do a properties on the total device it says 28.63MB total storage, used 16.53, Free space 12.10MB
Now i thought I was buying a 64MB Ram / 64MB Rom machine, is this right or do i have a duff one?
I thought it might be something to do with all the operator stuff it must be storing somewhere as it gave me the option of installing all the stuff from any network provider until i chose O2 and it installed all the O2 stuff, where is all the Orange, Vodaphone etc.. stuff gone?
Can enyone shed some light on this for me?
Richard
No problem. You have a device which is 64MB ROM and 64MB RAM.
If you look under Start/Settings/Memory,
"Main" is your RAM. It's 64MB dynamically shared between stored programs and runnign programs. The more programs you load to Main memory, the less you will have for running them (making the machine slower). You can give priority either way by moving the slider, but it's usually best to let Windows decide by leaving it in the middle. All data in this memory will be lost if you Hard Reset or your batteries go flat.
"Storage Card" is your SD card. Capacity depends on the size of your card.
"Storage", , under the "Storage Card" tab, is your non volatile flash memory. This is what's left spare in the 64MB ROM which isn't used by Windows Mobile. You use it to keep valuable data or applications, as it will survive a hard reset or your batteries going flat. You can set your Outlook Contcats/Appointments/Tasks and Connection settings to automatically save in this area via the Start/Settings/Permanent Save icon. You have 7.6MB to use.

Jam Storage Memory - What the Heck is in There, Anyway?

I noticed that I have 29 MB allocated to storage memory, of which 23 MB is in use. But I cant recall putting anythign in there to begin with!! And I dont see anything in there when I look at it in file explorer.
ANybody know what would be in there? Does the Jam put things in there? Is there a way for me to see what's in there and clean it out.
Could be anything under My Documents, applications, photos or an accidental video or audio note recording. Or applications from the Extended ROM.
As often is the case with the Pocket PC - there is a utility to help - and it's free.
WIMR (WhereIsMyRam?)

i agree - the Storage folder is a comlpete mystery to me. why do we even need an extended ROM? what msft should do is simple:
1) a user storage area (My Documents) in which there is NO data that is not specifically created by a human (i.e. no application specific files or other machine made folders with obscure names - how often have you looked at something in "My Documents" and thought "what is THAT? and can I delete it?")
2) a device storage area where ALL other files are stored - i.e. Windows files, Program files, etc...
The only exception to 1) should be user settings, playlists, dictionaries etc... but those should be buried, hidden and difficult to access inside one folder in My Documents
Does the stuff in Storage stay where it is after hardreset??
Yes filest that you put in the Storage directory is permanent...and it will be there even after a hard reset.
Regards,
Primoz
Storage is permanent & is used for 'Permanent Save' which you can find under settings/system
Checking the appropiate boxes makes your device sync with this permanent storage after ie. a hard reset.
Works like a charm!
The availablle memory is allocated between storage and programs automatically.

When you hard reset and run the Extended ROM it installs those applications RAM......

Memory allocation problem

I've upgraded my Magician with Anansky's big_storage rom... I want to use as much of the memory as possible for Program memory as opposed to Storage memory, so I load up the Memory Settings and slide the pointer from Program towards Storage... however, it seems to reset the pointer straight to the middle if I leave it a few seconds... even although I am keeping the pointer between the two markers (within the blue area).
The only program I am running is Spb plus.. does anyone know why I can't set the program memory higher than the default?
Memory Settings reports:
Total main memory: 57.41Mb
Storage
Allocated: 26.64
In Use: 7.81
Free: 18.43
Program
Allocated: 31.17
In Use: 12.68
Free: 18.49
I face the same problem in Blueangel also,
by trial and error I found that around 92-95 megs out of total of 128 megs, remains stable and does not slide back. u can try yr optimum config.

Splitting up the memory

Hi there,
In the previous versions of Windows Mobile (e.g. 2003 and 2003SE) it was possible to "split up" the total device memory by yourself.
The available memory is devided into Storage and Program memory. If you needed more storage memory, you could simply use that switch to "steal" some of the program memory to add it to the storage.
Unfortunately Windows Mobile 5.0 is missing this switch, which - I guess - is due to the use of flash memory.
But isn't there still a way to adjust the memory allocation? E.g. by using some of your handy tools...?
Thanks in advance.
I doubt it since for WM5's new system, the actual hardware is changed. Before, storage and program memory both went into RAM, so you could freely choose how much each got. Now storage has ROM, and program memory has RAM. You can't turn ROM into RAM since they are physically different, so you can't move memory from the storage to the program memory...

compare WM03 and WM05: many problems and limitations

Dear All
I am very disattisfied from WM05 compares to my (XDA) WM03. I wish you can share some suggestions and advices.
PROBLEMS with Wizard T-mobile Vario (=Qteck 9100) and Windows Mobile 2005, version 2.17WWE:
1. Memory limitations:
Only 47 MB of Storage and only 44 MB for Program! Total 91MB
At startup, after hard reset, even with pressing soft reset within 3 secs, you have no more that 25MB of storage and 30MB of Program, very little!
It should be 128MB ram to 64MB rom, totale 192MB
Not only we are missing 101MB, what is worst is that the new OS don't let you allocate RAM or ROM
In my case some application (for example Chinese fonts) are heavy (8MB) and cannot be installed on mini-SD card. Simply you cannot choose, they install in main memory.
After a minium batch of required software are installed I end up with a super slow machine, with just 11MB Storage memory and 16MB Program memory
2. Memory cannot be re-allocated
I would be more that glad to get rid of most native applications (like intellidial, skype, etc). But it seems NOT possible.
Nobody was able to cook External ROM
3. TotalCommander
Even cooking external rom, what benefit?
By using TotalCommander it seems that cab istalled to external rom are very little in size.
So my question again: where is all the 192 memory gone? Who uses it, which programs? How can the OS be so large?
4. MS Contacts Problem
If you filter by using categories, the filter is NOT retained!
In wm03 it was (until next software reset, of course).
I mean if you filter using "business" categories, then you (without soft resetting) make calls, or do something else, at next time the filter is gone. You must re-select it
5. Installing application with Active Sync
Very funny: I have tested all my apps and they are ALL compatible with WM05. Also the software house confirmed to me.
Now look at Spb Backup V1.1.2. It is compatible to wm05, right?
Or Lingvosoft dictionaries 2006
Or Slovoed Dictionaries 2006
These sfw are fully compatible and in fact no problem with them.
But if you run low in memory (for example Storage free 15MB and Program free 16MB, like now) what happens is:
5.1 either the program install and then NOTHING appears in startup memu. Simply they are not there, even if no error messages appear.
or
5.2 the desktop active synct installation sees that your internal memory is too short and ask you where to install. You choose STORAGE CARD and INVARIABLY AFTER INSTALLATION THE RESULT IS: INSTALLATION IS UNSYCCESFUL!
Then you can free memory or erase previous software: YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO INSTALL THE FAILED APPS ANYMORE!, UNTIL YOU MAKE A FRESH HARD RESET.
After a fresh hard reset the application can be installaed without problem!
CONCLUSION: IF ACTIVE SYNC ASKS YOU WHERE TO INSTALL, THEN SURELY THE INSTALLATION WILL ABORT.
5.3 Active sync DOES not ask where to install the application.
The installation completes and then a message says: installation unsuccessful, because it WAS NOT digitally signed!?!
If this is the case, NO WAY to install the application, until next HARD RESET
After hard reset, the application may install and work flawlessy!
6. Installing application from mini-SD card
I tried with TomTom 5.21
Don't even start!
7. Zone Alarm
I still have to shut down Zone Alarm 6.1.744 in order to Active Sync to sync with Wizard. No way to accept the virtual LAN network. Do you know a solution?
8. OmapClock
how yo make omapclock to retain the new speed (say 240MHz)?
Sometime it will retain. Sometime after few minutes the speed reverts to 180MHz. I did not make any soft reset in between.
Please let me have your suggestions on some of these strange behaviours
Thanks and waiting
saulo866
any suggestions? Any solutions to these problems I mentioned?
I am c0nsidering to sell out my Wizard with WINDOWS MOBILE 2005, and look for an older WM03 model
Thanks a lot
Saulo
Memory problems: The whole concept of Storage and Program memory is removed in WM5, so most of your moans about memory are not valid when applied to WM5 - especially the part about allocating memory between storage and programs. Basically, now you have RAM, and Storage space - they are seperate, and unrelated. I suggest you read up on this major change in WM5.
4. True - a minor niggle though, in my opinion.
5. When I install by ActiveSync, I do not get asked by AS where I want to install the program (that's a WM03 thing) - I get asked by the device where I want to install it - and it either installs it in \Program Files or \Storage Card\Program Files - which is a major benefit, because before, if I wanted to install to Storage Card, it would often install just in the root of the card, which was invariably messy.
My suggestion to you is to keep a good chunk of your phone storage free so that the .cab files can be copied to the phone in the first place, from there you can decide where to install the program to. I can't believe you have that many programs filling up your phone storage that can't be moved to the storage card.
6. TomTom is a pile of nonsense, which was obviously programmed by idiots. It requires a number of hard-coded paths to be present. Install it to your phone, and the maps to the card, and leave it as it is, and you'll have no problems.
7. Add the ActiveSync network to your Trusted Zone, and make sure the 3 ActiveSync programs have full control in the Program Control section. See the MS website for more info.
8. Dare I say it, RTFM. There is a MASSIVE thread on OmapClock, where I'm sure you downloaded the program from in the first place. Try reading it before asking the same question that's been asked numerous times before.

Search for "SmartSKey". Freeware. Works great together with OmapClock and does what you want. By switching the device on, it works with e.g. 252 MHz. Switching off = fallback to lower MHz. Great piece of software!
thanks to all for your kind ideas...
Any more suggestions?
Saulo
I suggest you sell your WM5 device and go back to WM2003. It seems most of your issues aren't really issues. I agree, RTFM.
Does anyone know how to:
1. make CC and BCC fields appear in TEXT messages? (SMS)
I found no hint in help file...
2. How to make filter on categories persistent? At the moment when you select filter, on, say, BUSINESS or FRIENDS, the filter disappear after you change focus on aother apps
Thanks and waiting
