Best img editor for PPC? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

I just made some pics with my S110 and they are not that bad when photoshoped a little. So I'm searching something for my device that can do
- resize
- brightness
- contrast
- gamma
- levels
- noise reduction
ATM I use Imageer, is there a better one? I'm missing the noise reduction in Imageer and the pics are pretty noisy so that would be welcome to edit them a little and bring em down to 640x480 before sending by email.

Pocket Artist 3

Wow, first time I hear of that software. I'll check that out asap. Thanks again.
By the way, does this tool work on magicians? The office forum has posts indication it does not: http://www.conduits.com/community/forum_posts.asp?TID=406&PN=1

it should work on Magician, but anyway try the second option....it's a software called "Idruna Photogenics"...
RAGO

I know photogenics but its extremely old and has not been updated in a few years while the newest version from pocket artist is from this september. Not sure how good photogenics still is.

That's about v3.1. I have v3.0 and it works perfectly so. Check out version 3. Its really Photoshop in a portable form.

I use Pocket Artist 3.1 on my JAM with no problems. I do not associate any file types with it though, that may be an issue.

Tried the new one (version 3.11) yet? That one just came out a few days ago.
By the way, I have Imageer installed atm and if Pocket Artist is good I gonne remove that one. BUT Imageer is the viewer for img files atm and I'd like Pocket Artist to stay out (read that it is a little slow) as a viewer. How do I switch the file types back to album or the included viewer?
Edit: Tried Pocket Artist 3.11 and boy am I impressed. This is THE most powerful img tool for ppc. I'm off to buy that at once. Thanks again for that tip!!! Its not that good as a viewer (the first start is kinda slow) but HTC Album fills in nicely here. This is really the "Photoshop" for PDA.

You can also modify the registry to enable the "Editor" utility for the built-in Album program. It will allow you to resize, crop, change gamma, brightness, hue and contrast without installing any additional programs. It does not support layers of course!
Registry Modification as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/HTC/Album/Disable Editor: set it to 0

That is nice to know for sure. Thanks for that.
I was searching for an editor that has one important function/filter: reduce grain or reduce noise. And Pocket Artist is the only that offers that filter. Thing is if I take some pics with the cam at xl res and do some level correction, contrast enhancements and grain reduce and then finally resize them to 640x480 they look pretty good for emails. Without the grain/noise reduce they dont look too good at all so that filter is more important than anything else to me when I want to send pics away by email.
I dont need the most function out of Pocket Artist, I only need 4 or 5 after all but the noise reduction is very very important to me and I've not seen a PPC implementation of it besides Pocket Artist. And ancient img editor called Photogenics had that too but the latest version is from 2001 and that is bejond good and evil so Pocket Artist is basically the only choice. Besides the workflow is pretty similar to Photoshop, the filter options for level correction etc. work very much like Photoshop. So if you know how to get things done with Photoshop Pocket Artist is the best there is.

[03/29/08] Perptual v0.3 with image viewer

Perpetual is a simple image zooming demo.
You can zoom on any of the 200 images, and the pixels will turn into other images to zoom, perpetually.
What is it for ?
Nothing ! It's just a proof of concept and a demo I made...
If you have any images to submit to add into the demo, feel free to post in the forum and we'll update as soon as possible ! I'm looking for images that have nice colors and an overall dominant one (that'll be used for the color detection) Thanks for helping support this useless project !
Download Perpetual
Also available :
Perpetual Image Maker
Sexy Image Pack
Kaiser47's DeviantART selection (really awesome pack !)
SaintSeya pack
Zen nature pack
v0.3 (03/29/08)
- New prp format (old ones should still work though) with additionnal data : author, icon, etc...
- New menu using the new prp format data, looks much better !
- Now saves viewed purcentage !
- Now works with Smartphones !
- Fixed menu bug if you had too many packs
- Much higher image quality while zooming
v0.2
- Fixed image bug when you have more than 256 images (that was stupid)
- Fixed potential crash when moving around too much
- Fixed surface bug when you moved around
- PerpetualMaker updated, smaller exe
- Improved performance
- New image viewer to select start image
- Now over 300 images !
- New Image Pack maker : just put in any directory, and it'll take all the images from images/ (still requires 240x240 jpeg images) and do a pack (.prp file)
- New splash screen, with possibility to select pack to display !
- Fixed random crash when changing speed while in auto mode
- Speed button : x0.5, 1, or 2
- Auto button for lazy people
- Surface button to come back to the unzoomed image
A video is available on that page if you want to see what it looks like without downloading/installing
Thanks for the feedback, suggestions, and images !
Fascinating software - it works perfectly in portrait, its a bit slow and landscape, and it doesn't handle the change from portrait to landscape well.
Thanks for making my Kaiser much cooler however.
Any way the process could be automated, to make it into a semi-interactive screensaver?
Surur
Well, technically, it's automated on my PC (there's no way to add all the needed data for the colors of the 200 images alone ^^) : I just have a folder with the images, launch my .Net app, and it scans through all the images, sorts by color, and outputs both miniature views (to avoid overloading the memory) and a huge array with the number of the image to use for every 16bit color ^^
It takes a while to run on my PC, so it's unlikely to work on in realtime, would have way too much loading time. I have just thought of an alternative method to build the color array, it could work much faster, but would only be available for real-time if you have only a few images... and if you don't have many images, well... It won't work to well ^^ You need to have at least 50 or 100 photos, ranging in pretty much all the possible colors (my PC app outputs which colors are overpopulated and which aren't populated enough, to know which images to remove and what colors to search for) ^^
While it would be cool to use my own pictures, it would be nice to see it zoom through the stock images without me having to touch the screen with the stylus too, independently.
Surur
Well, this is a first release, I just wanted to have a quick proof of concept and that's it ^^
The future stuff that could be added :
- "Surface" button (to move back up)
- Auto button (could be nice to for lazy people ^^)
Anything else ?
A zooming back feature would be cool

Well, it should work on VGA, just that it's upscaled. I tested on emulator and the performance was good.
In theory, a 100% VGA version could be done. But the program is already 5MB, uses a lot of ram for all the images, and a full VGA version would just use 4 times more ram :s

*Edit*
Ok here are some random Pictures i found and had on ma system! I extra made them 240x240 so you dont have any work rescaling them
Btw i would like if the "zooming" effect could be more smoother and slower if its possible...
Hope you like ma pics!
Regards
Thanks, let me check that out.
As for zooming, the speed can be changed, not a problem I didn't actually test on hardware, just on emulator, so it might not be optimal yet...
TODO list (note to myself) :
- Auto-zoom
- Back button
- Speed button
edit : hey, nice set of pics I'll definately include most of them in the next release (either as additional pictures or as a remplacement. like flickr-color-picker.jpg which will be perfect to replace a sort of crappy image I had in the same style ^^) Thanks !

Better not or are you willing to made a "special" adult version ?

Could be fun if you know where to find nice pics (IE, with nice and different colors, won't be as simple)
edit3 (last one, I promise !) :
Still looking for a good theme for the icon and the viewer, if anyone has an idea, please share !
I found few random pics... hope you can use them
Yay, those are awesome !
I'm currently finishing a set of 50 sexy photos, then I'll see if it works good enough with those
Cool and amazing app! Works perfectly on WM2003! Keep working
I think that you should make other app like that: http://www.mazaika.com/mazdownload.html for ppc (WM 2003 support for sure! ).
Nice work!
Thanks for the link. That one seems nice too, but the images are in 64x64, whereas I use nice and big 240x240 images ^^ I'm thinking of modifying my PC .Net exe and redistributing it... It could produce a file like myimages.prp which would contain all the data needed, and could be copied on the PPC to open it...
As for SexyPerpetual, tested, it works pretty well ! The images aren't the best as I used the first image pack I could download on bittorrent. Not sure what the forum policy is for the kind of stuff, so I will not post a link to download it. Just send over a quick PM requesting the link and I'll answer back
As for the video, if you want to take a look, here the link for the normal version's video : http://www.palib.info/blog/flvplayer.swf?file=http://www.xflib.net/Games/Perpetual/Perpetual.flv
Just keep replace the name by the sexy version's name and you should be able to view it (if the admins don't want this posted, please just tell me and I'll remove it !)
yes it woudl be cool if you can provide a tool that we can use to compile "our" versions with our pictures. it would be simpler than having to make special requests to you and sending many pics ?
but also if you really want pics, perhaps we can all send some to you ? public ftp or classic sharing sites like rapidshare ?
SexyPerpetual is very nice But insert "more naked photos" xD
BTW: I like kaiser47s idea
Kaiser47, feel free to use any method to send of photos
Yeah, I know, the sexy version misses a few naked photos ^^ But I just took a pack found on bittorrent, and used the ones with the most colors (because if I use only naked women on a white background, the transitions will be crappy, so I needed to have blue, red, etc....). If you have a pack with nice naked photos, I'll add them to the pack
I'm currently modifying the PC part of the code to generate a special file which could be distributed and read by the PPC app, that way anyone can do an image pack
Cool idea
I do not have ones so I will w8 for new versions xD

Updated 3/26 : CEPhotoViewer - Small Photo Viewer

Folks,
I have created a small photo viewing application that I wanted to publish to the world. Key features are
- Native C code. No dependencies on .NET or any other library
- Tiny (just 25Kb)
- Full screen photos with gestures and hot-spots
- Slide-show mode
- Nice transitions (you can see them all in the slide show mode)
I have tested this on my GPS (CE 4.2) and PDA (Hermes) and it works quite well.
Gestures:
- Slide left to go to next photo in list (You can also use the wheel down for this)
- Slide right to go to previous photo list (You can also use the wheel up for this)
- Slide up to go to last photo in list
- Slide down to go to first photo in list
Hot Spots
- Top left to open a specific folder. Folder navigation is done by sliding up and down and select the <This Folder> to select
- Bottom left to open a specific photo. Again, you can slide up or down or go to a specific folder
- Bottom Right to start/stop slide show mode. Slideshow is 3 seconds. You can change the config file to specify different interval
- Top right to exit
- Right edge of screen to go to next photo in list
- Left edge of screen to go to previous photo list (You can also use the wheel up for this)
- Bottom edge of screen to go to last photo in list
- Top edge of screen to go to first photo in list
Configuration
CEPhotoViewer saves its configuration in CEPhotoViewer.cfg in the same folder as the exe. This file contains the last open folder and the slide show timeout
Startup
- On startup CEPhotoViewer looks for any JPG/BMP/GIF images in the program's folder. Else it prompts you to select a folder. Once selected the config file is created and subsequent runs, it will automatically pickup that folder
Bugs
- CEPhotoViewer uses native microsoft DLL to load a image. Depending on the speed of your CPU, this loading might be slow. Photos resized to the correct size (under 640x480) load pretty quickly. Large (2MP+) photos take a couple of seconds to load. Perhaps someday I will include native JPG loading codeDone
- CEPhotoViewer is built for ARM CPUs only. I can build for other CPUs but dont have a device handy
Looking forward to your comments. Im also working on finishing a MP3 player and a launcher (more appropriate for GPS devices)
Version history
- v0.67 (3/25/2008)
First public release- v0.68 (3/26/2008)
Integrated JPEG processing. Much faster in loading big images (although the size tripled from 20Kb to 60Kb)Added edge hot-spots to navigate in addition to slide gestures

What do you think of adding in touch Pan, Tilt, Zoom, & Rotate? Also, it would be cool if it auto rotated based on the original pictures orientation.
Thanks,
Curious G
i'll give this a shot when i get home

Forgot to mention, pictures are auto-rotated if they can fit better in the screen. Also auto-rotates if you change the display (like when I pull out the keyboard)
Nice but it wouldn't load my actual (2mp) photos. Sliding is a bit slow but very smooth. Wouldn't quit and at some point all corners stopped working.

Loading large images is time consuming, sorry, thats the way microsoft has implemented JPG processing. The corners are not 'not responding', the program is still trying to load the image.
Im trying to compile ijl jpg library that can loaded scaled images, that way I only decompress the size I want
3/26 - Version updated
Guess I'm in the minority who resizes images to fit in PDA screen. Due to popular demand, I have integrated the IJG jpeg library to considerably speed up loading of large images (largely due to internal image scaling)
Also added edge hotspots to navigate images, rather than slides which are bit cumbersome
my personal opinion(i havent seen program YET):
any viewer, that cannot show gif/animgif/png/tga/bmp files is pointless.
it doesn't matter how "touch"-ed it will be.
so - i am gonna update opinion after tests..

It does show gif and bmp. Adding png is trivial (libpng can be compiled easily in CE, both PNG and TIF take about 100Kb each). My intent is to what cover 80% of the people would want.
Just tried it on my Trinity and, while the transition speed is nothing to write home about, the software works. Not sure if i prefer this or S2V, but it has to be said this is a nice application.
Edit
Could do with more space at the top when navigating folders, the directory path disappers under the "This Folder" button.
Please could we have screenshots?

The main goal of writing this app was to have it working on all CE devices (including GPS that do not have the .NET framework installed).
Also, there are more transitions than just the slides that are visible when you are in slide-show mode
Amazing Program!!
I've just gotten myself a windows mobile phone. I looked everywhere for a simple photo viewer that could scroll through images by tapping on the left or right of the screen. I didnt understand why resco photoviewer or pqv or any of those other photo viewers didnt have this feature. It was so frustrating.
Also I wanted to browse folders starting at a pre-configured Picture folder. I didnt want the program to go scanning my whole PDA for pics including gifs and pngs for some other softwares.
Finally found this program and I'm really happy.
I wonder if you're still developing this program though? This thread doesnt seem to be active anymore. I hope you'll still continue developing this program.
If you're too busy, I'd be happy to help in some aspects of coding or improving the program. It really is that amazing to me.
Hope this program is still alive.

Glad to hear that this application is working well for you.
I have not stopped development on this, added additional features like PNG, GIF decoding and automatic rotation.
This being a PPC forum, there is not much need for this app since there are multiple options (including built-in applications). I had made this app and many others primarily for GPS and other low end devices without the standard libraries.
I will update this thread with the latest version and also add other applications I have built (including native MP3/OGG player, simple shell, GPS dashboard etc), all totally skinnable and configurable
The program has been amazing. Loads huge pictures with no problem. It's definitely faster than Vito's EyePhoto.
But Coolsva, I have a question. Now call me crazy, but I want to be able to set it up so that when I click a jpg file in file explorer or total commander, it will open up in your photoviewer instead of the windows mobile default viewer (coz it sucks). What're the parameters to do so? I tried the normal parameter "%1" but it doesn't seem to work.
I'm glad you're still working on this program.
Cool program , but zoom would be nice feature

Just now landed at this thread after spending a while checking out google results for "windows mobile picture viewer". Coolsva's prog sounds very worth trying, but I'm wondering if 0.68 is still the latest release?

Video editing software for our Diamond ?

Hi all,
I used to be really enthused by the small video editing app included in my Sony Ericsson fans. It was very useful to edit video, make personal editing etc... to send via MMS. Assembling clips was made easy and intuitive.
I can't find such an app for pocket PC. I stumbled onto http://www.trakax.com/software/mobile. It's a useful editing software with cutting edge graphix, but not free and quite cumbersome to use...
Do you happen to know a complete video editing software for our beloved pocket pc? It SHOULD exist but I could'nt find anything out there...
THX a lot !
I found nothing.. I hope there will be some video editing software some day, i had a sony ericsson phone, and they have this simple video editing software called VideoDJ. So maybe there will be one to ppc too...
I don't know about video editing for PPC (maybe there r some) , but I think You don't need such a program, you can
edit it by using PC (with many video editing programs) and export the file..

New Version of TrakAxPC for VGA devices
Hi Cormac here from TrakAxMobile.
Just a quick note to say we have released a new version of trakAxmobile for VGA devices.
Here is quick list of the improvements we have made.
1) We have improved the search function, allowing you to search your content by day/month/year. You can also highlight a number of days/months or years. This will allow you find the media on your device much quicker.
2) We have also improved the editing. We now decompress the file when you click on the edit button allowing you to access time positions in the file quicker and easier. When editing audio you can just highlight the area you wish to cut on the waveform with your stylus.
3) We now allow you to crop photos and you can add a ken burns effect to photos allowing you to Pan and Zoom into particular areas of the photo.
4) We have added a whole range of new transitions.
5) In the mixing screen, you can now control the tempo of the media by switching the slider function from volume to tempo. The slider now allows to slow down or speed up the clip. This is cool if you want a video clip to play in slow motion or wish to speed it up. The same applies to audio, you can speed it up or slow it down by adjusting the slider.
6) We now also allow you add themes and effects to videos or photos. You can also change the color of the text and add background colors to your credits.
You can check out the new features at our website -
http://www.trakax.com/software/mobile/trakaxmobile_vga_devices/
and there is a 7 day free trial available from the following link.
http://www.trakax.com/software/mobile/trial_version/
Check it out and if you have any question, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Best regards
Cormac
Been using trakAx for a while now - awesome app!!!
Just be patient when its rendering your clips as it can take a while - its got a lot of processing to do.
Output is only 640x480 though I think

Contacts pics - TD2 vs. Outlook 2007

Hi all,
I noticed that if I add a pic to a contact in Outlook 2007 I get a failry low res image on the TD2. However, if I add an image directly on the TD2 I get a fantastic resolution image on the TD2 which also seems to transfer to Outlook.
So, for the best quality pics use the TD2 it seems. However, this is annoying as all my images are on my PC. Is there a way to bump the quality in Outlook to the same as the TD2 - it can obviously handle it as it shows the images from the TD2 entered contacts great.
Ideas???
R
Had the same problem on my TD1, but haven't found a solution yet. I'm looking into it and will let you know if I find a solution.
EDIT: Seems like this is a Outlook problem..... http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP100137791033.aspx
is it not resolved yet??
note: it is not low quality. That's the problem, it's high quality and the phone tries to show everything and pixels go one over the other.
I just think so, but as a reason, I owned a SE K750i and copied a 2MB photo on it. When I tried to look at it, it would be pixelite and when zoomed, it looked okay.
Just a guess . And i know Topaz is no SE, but still ...
The solution is to import the pictures on the phone and not in Outlook and also not update the photo's in Outlook. Always from the device. Its an Microsoft Outlook issue since ever.
When you reinstall your phone and sync it you get also the good pictures, but not when you edit the contact picture in outlook
yes. That is the solution
Me too discover the problem adding the contact picture directly in Outlook.
So I did different test and, of course, it's better add pictures directly from the TF3d contact manager.
But, if the picture is too big, you get a selection square box for choose the face area, and many times the face is still bigger the area.
So I found that, at least for me, the best way is to edit the pictures on the PC to get a final jpeg file of 266x266 pixel to be choosen in TF3d contact manager.
Just use the zoom scroller to resize the box
R
dho!
I tried to resize the square box directly on the corner and on the edge....
And the solution is so simple...the ZoomBar !!
Thanks !
P.S. I tried, the box doesn't change the size, it is the image that zoom so you can center the contact's face !
It's so much simple than my way.
I usually use high quality crops of 250x250p and both Outlook and Manila display them pretty well.
The problem is with resizing mechanisms and their side effects. If you provide high quality image, then you minimize resizing impacts.

Increase zoom in album viewer

Is there any registry tweak that will allow you to zoom in closer with the album viewer software. It works great for the files I view but I need to be able to zoom in much more than it allows
Thanks
Mike
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can zoom in as far as the resolution of each image allows. I have some pretty high-res photo's (taken on a digital SLR) and I can zoom in on them until I start to see pixels. If you have low-res pics, you'll start seeing pixels much sooner.
Zooming in any further would be useless since it can't add any detail, you'll just see pixels the size of Lego blocks.
Edit: I realize you may want to examine an image pixel-per-pixel for some reason. In that case, sorry, I can't help.
Thanks for your response, If I could zoom in that close it would be great. I have some hi resolution files anywhere from 6-10 MB which open fine but I can only zoom in about 3 levels. If I could go to the level you describe, it would more than meet my needs.
Hm... Maybe there is a limit after all. I must admit I haven't tried any files in the 10mb region.
I've taken a quick look in the registry but I haven't come across anything that looks like it might solve this. Sorry.
I looked in the registry too but couldn't find any reference to HTCalbum at all. Guess I'll just have to start trying all the demos of the photo apps again...
There's a bunch of stuff under 'HKLM/Software/HTC/HTCAlbum'. Maybe you can find something I overlooked there.
Thanks, don't know why Resco didn't find that ref, I thought it scanned all directories. I couldn't find anything there either. I did change a dword from 2 to 3 in wheelzoomin frames but that didn't do anything obvious so I changed it back. Wonder if HTC support might be able to help, I've read that they're quick to respond to customer software issues but since this is more of a preference issue vs buggy software they may not offer up much.
Yeah, today I copied a 78 mega pixel image (actually a map) to my Leo and to my surprise, I can't zoom more than a certain amount in HTC Album. Anyone know a fix for this?
use resco photo manager, that one allows you to zoom in much more than the htc album. The newest version also supports multi-touch!
thanx! Tried resco; I'm flattered how they implemented multi touch this soon! only a month and a half after Leo's release.
It's really nice and fast (even faster refresh time than htc album) but I wish u could disable multi touch rotation. It's constantly confusing pinch with rotation.
