O2 (UK) Confirm XDA Mini Pro Release (& Great Deals) - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

In light of O2 Germany announcing that they will be releasing the wizard as the XDA Mini S, I have just spoken to O2 (UK)'s Marketing Dept & they Officially confirmed they will be follcwing suit, with a UK release date of late October or early November, (stock & supply pemitting, (haha, hehe), they also confirmed that it will be released in the UK under the brand name of the XDA Mini Pro instead of Mini S, GET EM WHILE THERE HOT BOYS (or not, as the case may be)
Regards & Best Wishes Ash'e.

October / November. Jeez that is ages away.
I'm now looking at the Tornado (i-mate SP5) but from looking on the Expansys site where you can pre-order this it is very very expensive.

O2 (UK) XDA Mini S Pricing
The Price of the XDA Wizard Pro looks like its going to be £199.99-GBP or less, sounds like a good deal to me, think I will leave the Tornado or XDA Phone well alone in light of that.

Don't get me started. I've had mine on order since August and I've been without a phone for a month :|

£474 actually: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=125518

Actually not with an O2 Contract
Actually I need a new O2 contract, so instead of buying the I-Mate sim free version online, think I will hang on that little bit longer & get the XDA Mini Pro version of the HTC Wizard & save myself £300.00 GBP, since I need a new phone contract as I will need to make phone calls next year.
Always beer an early (wait for a good deal) adoptor, not an early, early take what ever deal I can, merely to get my hands on the latest kit first adoptor, you no I have always found what a difference a month can make when buying newly released tech.
Besides which my contact at O2 said that there is a chance that with the right contract it could even be free, (best for business 250 or above).
Oh on a foot note 02 business is offering completely free of charge GPRS access within reasonable usage limits (not more than 38 megs download a month).
All in all if you get a free Wizard and free GPRS access and some exclusive minutes every month for 18 months, sounds like a good deal to me.
Regards Ash'e

Where did you see unlimted data?
I'm buying a jasjar now w/o2 plan, not busniess, though I can, would love the data bit...

Its only available when you buy direct from O2 & when it is an XDA branded product & is available from the 15 of October, ethical usage does apply though.
Regards Ash'e

Are you sure that ethical usage does not apply?
So it would mean unlimited 3g? Skype calls and all? Unbelievable. Also, how do you know it is only available from the 15th vs the 3rd as o2 say? ( I spoke with o2 business today)

Not quite that easy
Although in theory Skype should work on GPRS, they say on the Skype site that there are problems with it, & Personally I have never managed to get it to work, usually lock in to a free WiFi Zone to use Skype.
Besides Which a Skype call on GPRS, would be highly bandwidth/megabyte intensive, which would be in contradiction of the O2 ethical usage limits.
However as to the date that is what I was told over the phone, could have moved it up my contact is one of my best mates from Oxford Uni who managed to become a director of O2 (lucky sod) but he does sometimes get his dates wrong he works in IT not marketing,
Nevertheless there is (within certain limits) free GPRS, which with a free XDA Mini Pro, & some inclusive minutes & texts I think its still a good deal and a great money saver,
Regards Ashe

Free Grprs - Data
This is the first i hear about this usage policy, but I thought the free data, whether 3g or gprs (I am getting the jasjar on an 02 contract for minutes, not data) was indeed only for o2 business users, and not the o2 35mb data only tarif (35GBp). I am confused as where the data is free.
You can have a data only business tariff, but that has a 35mb limit, besides, I don't know how you find unlimited data on o2??? (I get GPRS bills)

Let Me Explain
My buddy at O2 lets me know what the best deals are that are coming up, however O2 has a strict policy of not releasing any information to even its sales staff untill at max a couple of days before they become active, because if they did a lot of people would keep waiting for the better deals and this could makes there sales eratic.
As a customer they want you to take the best deal that is available at the time not what is on the cards in a months time.
O2 are trying to get there GPRS usage up and have come up with a plan to get more of there XDA business users used to using GPRS and the internet on there devices, knowing full well that once they get use to it even when the offer ends they will more than likely keep using it after experiencíng its advantages first hand.
I am just lucky that a director at O2 likes to keep me sweet because of certain aspects of my work and my long freindship with him, because of this I get the luxury of a little bit of pre-release information, thats all, believe me I always joke with him about giving me a little bit more for old times sake, I never get it though, although I do with a little bit of patience always get a good deal, he has never let me down yet, it was him that told me to hang on for the release of the XDA Mini Pro, and the unreleased release date for it, although O2 UK will corfirm that they definitely are releasing the XDA Mini Pro, my buddy just let me know when and what good deals would be attached to it.
Regards Ash'e

Softly, Softly Catchee Monkey.
In Light of some of the Sim Free prices I Keep seeing around this site, I think that maybe it might be worth waiting for some of the contract deal with the big providers.
Regards Ash'e

Sorry guys if this has been mentioned already, but for anyone that's missed this, what do you think of the 'magicians' successor, o2s' branded xda Atom?
Same form factor as the magician, but with WM 5.0, 128 Rom, on-board wifi, 262k QVGA screen, integrated FM Radio and a .....yes...2 megapixel camera upgrade!
I'm getting seriously confused. If we can believe these specs, it really throws a spanner in the works for me. I mean, I've pretty much decided on the Universal (just not sure on MDA Pro or o2s' Exec) but this 'Atom' thing is a serious upgrade from the old Jam and remains 'pocket friendly'. Opinions anyone...advice would be appreciated.
Anyway check this link and judge for yourselves.
read more here: http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001703,39095540p,00.htm

i don't have any "sources" but i called up 02 and they confirmed that it will be released on the 3rd and the mini s should be out by the end of the year as they have it on there system as a near future release

To jaythemagicain:
if that post of yours was in response to mine,...thanks alot! I'll need to check out both the Exec and the Atom side by side, in person, to get a clearer perspective on things.
I was seriously contemplating the MDA Pro due out hopefully end of this month,...but now, can't wait till the 3rd! What's a few more days, right?

The Atom is Confusing Me To:
I have to admit that all the recent news as regards the XDA Atom, is confusing me to, had almost decided on the Wizard or XDA Mini Pro as they are now calling it unlike XDA Mini S there calling it in Germany, now however, the XDA Atom slowley creeps in and confuses us all again, a few confirmed specs would be really usefull.
Even Jag at O2 has heard nothing about it yet & I don't even know if it is anything to do with HTC.
Has anyone got any updated specs to put us all out of our misery
Regards Ash'e

It could be that it's the same sort of thing like voda and orange did when they basically made the jam but reworked it and made the vpa/spv versions.Perhaps one of the mini s's,but the keyboardless version, and reworked?

The Phantom Atom
Been searching for hours on the Internet & making lots of phone calls to everyone I know that may have any information on the Atom but to no avail, and no definative answer or information looks like we are just going to have to be patient, as I have said in other post this is almost like searching for the Holy Grail of Smartphones.
Every body loved the size of the magician, but wanted 128 Megs, WiFi & WM2005, but not to many people wanted the extra size, the slide out keyboard that caused the extra size or to have a slower CPU. Well it appears that the elusive XDA Atom fullfills all of these criteria, but is more elusive than the Holy Grail. However you can bet a pound to a dollar, that it will not reach Europe, and definatly not the UK, perhaps the operators are afraid to many people will buy them and start using Skype on WiFi, and effect there profits, it would certainly be easier to sell to the youth market because of its form factor.
Perhaps HTC should be listening to some of the comments on this forum as I reckon they could have a world beating Iconic device if they only thought about it and listened to what people are saying.
Oh well I will get down from my Soap Box now, any comments Chaps
Regards Ash'e

URGENT NEWS ON XDA EXEC

Todays i rang O2 online and they imformed me that EXEC is available as from Monday 26th of September at 8:30am this is not a hoax as i rang 2 different sales advisors and the XDA EXEC is now showing on there latest stock sheet.
I did question them about the 3rd of October date and they imformed me that they had decided to bring the date forward by a week.
O2 has imformed me that there are some seriously exellent 3g data and video calling bolt ons coming so hold tight......
If this indeed so, I'll be there in the morning! Can anyone else confirm this, as Tekguru has been informed that there may be a delay of 2-3 dats as of the 3rd October? Confusing?!?
Yay
Does anyone have details on the pricing structure that O2 will be using?
I don't want to be a killjoy, but I have used O2 for a month when I got an XDA IIs (before I knew about the Exec), and if you need their customer services, you will pay national rate for approx. half an hour before O2 actually get round to speaking with you.
This is the reason I have gone with Voda in the end. T-mobile were pretty good as well, and also Orange were good.
Just be careful in case you need support from them.
Joe
Not quite true
I've been on the phone to o2 last week and just thinking how much better they had gotten. They are much better than 'Club PenPal"
=> Hi, I'm Mo, how can you I help you today?
=> Sorry, please wait for the next rom upgrade.
=> When? When? I don;t know, but have a great day, thank for you using Club Pen pal."
The O2 UK website now has the XDA EXEC on there website!!!!
Bring it on in Australia!!!!
Rang Staff Accounts this morning (o2).
They confirmed that they have a release date of 26/09 but that they don't have it on their systems yet.
Also I've 4.4 months left on my current contract and would cost me about £144 to get out of it...
I would sell my 2i for about 200 quid, so I'm looking at around £170ish in total to get into a new contract with the Exec, though I'm not sure if I would get the Exec at the same price as upgrading from the 2i...
Hmmmmmm
Ant
Just been on the phone to 02 and they are saying that it is out today, but its not in stock and they have no prices for it till its in stock or a date/time it will be instock wtf they are going to call me back when its in stock so that will be sometime never i surpose lol
I just spoke with someone in sales department; today is only a provisional release date, the product will be in stock around 2nd week in october I really want one of theses things...it's driving me CRAZY  having to wait!!!
Anton.Valleyman, u think u could buy two units...I don't live in the UK so I can't buy one direct...maybe we can make a deal  any help?
Sorry, I have a stinking cold today, and I was coming down with it and being miserable yesterday.
I tried to call Voda to see if they can do anything appart from gratuitously skanking me for data (6 quid = 5 mb, 15 for 10, 25 for 42megs...), and when I ask why for 23 quid you get 70 megs on a 3G laptop card, I am put on hold for 45 mins and then I gave up. They have beaten my O2 misery record and now are the front runners in crap service.
My jasjar has a slightly loose screen and so I think it will be RMA'd back to Expansys and cancel the whole thing until T-mob release their one:
T-mobile seem the best deal to me with 200 mins and 55mb data for 35 per month. Any advances on the best voice data mix?
And youmeus, just save up yer $$$ and buy an imate or the other version outright - you don't want a slightly iffy Jasjar do you? only joking, I wouldn't sell it to anyone if it's not 100% perfect.
I'm going for my lemsip...
Joe
I know what you mean,
Upon waiting 8mins before actually speaking to someone i asked the simple question " is my multimedia enabled?"
15 mins on hold, before being told, they've just enabled it for me, and that they were having problems finding the sim update for my device, and me being ignored when saying i have the settings cab.
= 23 mins not as bad as you and i didnt get pestered for more of the hard earned, tell a lie, they did ask if i needed insurance, told em i got a 3rd party insurance.
i'm begining to see that o2 is terrible when it comes to customer care  oh well, will wait and see what t-mobile have up their corporate sleeves! BUT YOU MUST ADMIT THE BLACK o2 LOOKS "HOT"
Still not out
Well i phoned O2 upgrades this evening and was told that they don't have any details on the XDA Exec.
When i pushed his further - stating i've heard on this forum it should be available today - i was told that the product has been pushed back to next week 3rd October.
I hate the way O2 can give out different information to different people.
Does anyone have any more information on the release date and prices?
Thanks
Choose.
Which one would you like to have ? I think Mitac Mio A701 is a better choice the only drawback Mitac Mio A701 has comparing to Xda Exec is that Exec has QWERTY keyboard.
Theres no comparison dude, Universal is more of a lappy-style accurate data thing, and that Mitac is more like a mobile phone on steroids.
But, ppl like the phone-style thing, hence the phone-windows OS's success I spose.
For me, the Universal is the donkey's ding-a-ling, and the Mitac is a mobile phone.
Do you like the smaller form factor then?
Joe
I rang o2 today.
I was told available 30th October.
I rang back not believing 1st person and was told 3rd October.
Does the mitac not have built in gps? That is a cool feature that should be included in all ppc's

SPV M5000 in Orange October Magazine

They say I'll be out by the end out the month..?
No prices yet though
The dummy is available in the shops and wasnt as big as I was expecting..
Yay, I like Orange. I played with the Demo in their shop, its actualy a good dummy phone, close to the real thing.
Also, Go to the website and get yourself a £1 payg sim.
Then spend £1 on ALL YOU CAN EAT gprs for the day.
Its in their catalogue, you can buy £4 for 4meg for the month, or £1 a day for all you want. Thats the best gprs deal ive seen anywhere, including most of the contracts.
£1 a day for all day!? sounds interesting!
thanks for the info.

Last time i rang them (which has been quite a lot over the last few weeks) they said it would be November when it was coming out..... getting so impatient now, been holding off getting a new phone for months to get this!
spoke to oramge in paddington station, and there is an offer where you get 1gig a month fo 3 month, which is great, but then after that you are down to 25 megs for 25 quid or something. they weren't able to offer anything in between.
The 1 gig for three months is a standard offer on all new contracts, its to get you "hooked" on data so they can then sell you loads.
They do sell bundles on their 'data' tarifs, and not too bad, about £25 for 65meg i think.
guys iv been with orange for donkey years and get my devices free on an upgrade (pda's etc) but this time im going to get the o2 exec pro, i know i know same spec etc but the o2 device (to me) just looks great!!!
whats your opinions on the looks for the devices jasjar the m5000 and the rest what looks the best??
p.s orange upgrades told me today it could be 18 oct if were lucky or nov, but thats orange for ya, always last to provide
as far as looks go,
The VPA IV i havent seen in person but it looks plain white to me
not that appealing, it just looks like a gameboy ds, not professional at all
The MDA Pro looks smart with the (almost) aluminium appearance
not the best looking phone of the lot but theres worse (see above)
The SPV M5000 has a gunmetal finish
i guess it can be appealing, its not as good looking as the MDA in my opinion
but they are close
to me though its a tie between the Jasjar and the XDA Exec in terms of sheer appearance, the black simply looks far more professional, and in my opinion far less of a toy (like the VPA), the only thing that clinches it between the 2 is the blue backlight on the keys of the XDA Exec. It's all down to preferance in the end, but that's mine
quiltfish << NICE JIBE  at the m2000, mate i couldnt agree more! lol  i dont need a gun to defend my self iv got the m2000
just orded myo2 exec online cant wait till i get my hands on it!
I received a phone call today from a company (I can't remember their name) offering me a Free upgrade phone if I stay with Orange.
When I mentioned that I was only interested in the SPV M5000, he looked it up on his system and said that it had failed the testing by Orange and won't be available until February.
He didn't try to sell me an alternative, so I don't believe he was saying it to get me to choose another phone.
I hope he has got it wrong, but who knows. (Orange CS certainly don't) :?
I rang orange this afternoon and they told me it was just finishing the testing and would be ready for the end of the month!
I'm sure these people just pick a phrase out of a hat and say whatever it says!
If Orange mess about much more, i'll give up my 7 year relationship with them and move on..... I never can understand why they are always the last to release new phones!
drummer
>>> thats sales guys talking outa his ass. They will be releasing it as th chap here inoranges store has the device and let me have a play with it- the only issue he reported is that bcauses Oranges 3g Coverage is so poor customers will mainly be using 2g unless they are in a strong signal area(which are limited)but i guess they have to prove to the market that as always they are the last ones to bring out devices-mate iv been with orange contract for 7 donkey years and even though iwork for Vdafone I kept my main contractwith Orange as you know, you get used to having something around for so long(ABIT LIKE THE MISSES  -- scrap that o shel kick my head in!
and my bills on average of 70-100 a month so all my upgrades i get for free (m2000) so i calld them and asked what they can do as my upgrades due in march they said they will let me upgrade in dec the earliset and they will give me the m5000 free- BUT i cant wait that long an as i prefar the look of the XDA-exec iv just orded that with O2 online and when i get my m5000 im floging it for a healthy profit
and guys they are going to offer you the 18 month contracts when you try to upgrade as being the best thing since a micro wave! but becarefull-catches : you can not upgrade for 18 months! and your phones warrenty period isonly for 12 months! soon though 12 month contrats will be phased out. Vodfone strated itandORangeo2 have followed suit.

News for anyone who is considering the VPA version

I know that most people here already own a Jasjar or MDA and those who don't would much prefer the metalic finish of the SPV or the black XDA when they come out, but for those of you who are after the gameboy DS lookalike version, the VPA a word of warning, I have just gotten off of the phone with Vodafone as I was planning on getting my number transfer code... suddenly theyt start asking questions about why I want to transfer over to another network (no big surprise there) when I explained about the XDA Exec she slammed me on hold and sent me to her supervisor. She went through the options and hit me with some nasty figures...
First off its unlikely they will be getting it in before December
and far more scarily
Even if you sign up for an 18 month tarif at £99 a month (anytime 3000)they won't be selling it for less than £250 for either a new contract or upgrade, it would cost even more on the lower ones.
Although it is still up in the air as to weither they will be stocking the white device at the moment or rebadging the Qtek 9000 when they get their hands on it
something tells me voda won't be shifting many handsets
I've just finished a very interesting conversation with vodafone...
2 days ago I requested my PAC code in order to go for a deal I'd seen for a XDA exec via buymobilephones.com. I called today to get the pac code (takes 48 hours they said) and proceeded to signup with it on buymobilephones.com. Funnily enough their signup process died with an error on the final step!
Few seconds later, vodafone rung me... "We heard you're planning to leave becase you can't get an HTC Universal... we've made some special arrangements and you can have one, it's a Qtek..." he then proceeded to insist it was a Qtek 1620 (which *really* worried me because I think that's an HTC Blue Angel, not a Universal). We debated that for a while and he insisted that it's definitely a universal they're sending me - he described the rotating screen etc. So, it arrives tomorrow, new contract, fair enough, £70 cost, keep my wonderful 100mins for £15 a month tariff (was called online 100, and I'm not a heavy user so expected much higher costs to get a Universal).
So... I'm a very happy bunny (or at least I will be when it arrives tomorrow, and if it's a Universal), and I've only got good things to say about Vodafone right now! I should have asked whether the Qtek was going to be generally available from vodafone... but he did say it was a 'special retention arrangement'!
Matt S.
Let us know when it arrives please and what did you actually get
I am a business user and trying to get info about any smartphone devices is like getting blood out a stone. However they say the Qtek V1640 is imminent and "is the same as the O2 Exec". What finish it is I do not know. I presume it is just a rebadged QTek 9000
I would go and get one from another network, but we have hardware credit with Voda so it is effectively free!
If yours doeas turn up tomorrow I wold be very interested to hear !
T-Mobile and Orange have both offered trial units to keep me going until I can get a Voda one (not told them that!)
I'm not wanting to turn into C/S troll boy around here but ..
They will just blatantly lie to you.
They have to me already reg. billing and handset replacement.
The people they employ are often sub-intelligent and very young and the business methods of these companies are generally appauling.
Don't be suprised if they screw you over ..
I Agree with Gubb
A slightly pear-shaped twist...
Called vodafone this morning to confirm I should expect delivery today. Fine they said, all ok, you'll get it today.
4pm and no sign so I called again... this time, long while on hold... out of stock, no idea when we'll have it, try Monday, we're really sorry. They gave me £10 credit on my account however for messing me about, which is good I suppose, but obviously I'm a bit miffed.
Called back again, this time went through to the retentions team... he checked stock levels etc, assured me that they were coming in on Monday and I'd get it on Tuesday. I won't hold my breath.

Those Waiting From T-mobile...

2nd October.. T-mobile have updated their website, placed the MDA Vario II back on their website, Now that my mother says im allowed to have one, I rang to make sure they had some in stock, the person i was talking to, said there was quite a few ! Great !
Placed an order as soon as possible, with a bit of hitches during the order process using Firefox (did it in Internet Explorer in the end). Got my PAC Code from Orange (unfortunatly it has to come through the mail, delaying the process even more...)
Hopefulli i'll be a proud new owner of the MDA Vario II !!!! Can't wait.
Can anyone give me any useful links or tools? Any Pre-cautions?
Finally... I use a Series 60 Symbian (Nokia 7610), i want to backup all my messages and contacts and get them on the Pocket PC Somehow, Any ideas?
Yikes,
T-mob certinely know how to charge top whack?
Makes the VarioII V M3100 much more expensive on similar plans even ?
Maybe give it a week or two and see if the demand falls bringing down the prices hopefully..
LoL i hope your not trying to say im wasting my money...

No not realy, just dont want to find the price of the phone dropping off next week due to increased supply and maybe less demand, with the recent shortage of the Vario II over the past weeks T-mob maybe think the price can be 'hiked up'
Any ideas of the cost of the phone maybe a few weeks back on similar deals ?
I think the prices are about the same as they were in August. They introduced a £30 off the phone promotion during September, which now looks like it has finished.
The £5 of the plans, and 3 months free webnwalk started in September, and looks like it is continuing. Although the WebNwalk plans are revised, giving you less data (although it isn't supposed to be a hard limit).
Anyone know how T-mobile implement changes to their plans for existing contracts?
Example; if we took out webnwalk with 2gb data, and it is now advertised as 1Gb.
lol thanks killabeezz, i hope not either, but compared to Orange deals, their deals are almost double on contract and handset price (unless upgrading).
38h21543: Im sure you get to keep your contract, until it ends, in which case you'll need to pick one of the new contracts. So you still get to keep the 2gb data.

Moving on from the HTC Universal...

In a couple of months my contract with 02 comes to an end and I'm looking to move to T-Mobile (that unlimited data tariff calls to me!)
Anyway - Since nothing seems to have come of the supposed replacement (HTC Omni) this quarter I'm starting to consider my options. So far the following have come to me:
1) Carry my EXEC onto a new contract and save some money. Downside is the phone is a bit bulky and I'd prefer something a bit smaller, also lack of HDPSA (although how can you miss something you never had...?
2) Get the MDA Vario 2 (HTC TyTN) - far as I can tell I'd gain HDPSA and loose the VGA screen and a fair chunk of the size. Performance-wise is more or less a bust.
3) Get $SomeOtherPhone (Nokia n95 is interesting me here) sell the Exec and use the money to buy a WM5 PDA for the things I like using WM5 for (GPS and eBook reading are the two biggies) - Fujitsu Loox n560 would be a probable candidate here.
Any thoughts on the options, or can you suggest something better?

My situation exactly.....what I did.
Took the FREE M3100 (TyTn) and new plan to save money. I am now evaluating it as to whether I want to replace my Universal or keep it as a spare!!
To be honest so far the universal screen and keyboard are the main things I think I am going to have difficulty living without. However the form factor of universal I definately wont miss!!
Still cant have everything.

Oh yeah, forgot one of the downsides of the Vario 2 is the hideous colour scheme - the Orange M3100 looks much cooler
In a couple of month's T-Mobile might have something else that you'll be interested in.
It's best to wait until your time is up before choosing your next phone.

Oh I know, I'm not making any definite plan til the time is upon me, this is more of an "I'm bored at work and kicking ideas around" kinda thing
TBH though there is *nothing* in the HTC pipeline that I've seen that appeals to me - although to be fair the same can be said of everyone else too, the N95 is the only thing I know to be coming that looks interesting to me.
o2 do an unlimited data tarrif - they just don't shout about it!
it's called unlimited blackberry roaming or something like that.
£10/month :¬D

Well theres always the option that O2 will come up with something to convince me to stay I guess
keep the exec to sell on use that money to get a cool day to day phone,
(damn i wish i cud get a casio gz one in the uk),
at the end of your contract get a new contract with a tytn, use this for your pda
stuff
that would be ok for ya.altough im in a similar situ,im keeping the exec as nothing comes close for long coach trips, and im goona get a rugged nokia for day to day
good luck

I already carry two phones around - taking that number to three would e a bit much
I think as of right now I'm going to go with N95 and a seperate PDA *shrugs*
Depends on if the n95 sucks or not really!
