Battery Change without causing Hard Reset - Is it possible? - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Does anyone know if it is safe to keep the charger cord attached while changing the battery? The goal, of course, is to prevent a hard reset. (Obviously, all data should be backed up to SD card first.)
Is there a post somewhere that outlines the recommended steps for the battery change? (Search has not yielded one.)
Thanks,
Steve G.

Hi, I recently replaced my battery with a higher capacity battery bought off ebay for $22US del from HK to UK in 5 days. search for ezipda, later bought one for an Ipaq for same price.
The process of changing over took 5 mins, BUT!! I would not recommend having it plugged in and changing batt. You may be shocked by the result (pun intended). I cant remember if it did a hard reset but dont think it did. As long as your back-up battery is charged and u are quick dont think there should be a problem.
Unscrew the screws and get a wide thin blade and go around the edge of the case, I didnt and caused a few marks ont he edges! There are a number of clips that pop open quite easily. The battery is held in place by double sided tape, use the the same blade and carefully prise the battery up. Replacement is a reverse of the procedure, the only tricky bit is the connector is quite small and a bit difficult to locate but not too bad.
Hope I have helped.

Thanks, BadgerBoy1.
The backup battery is the key, but how does one determine if it is working and charged? I've searched all over the system for an indicator of the backup battery, to no avail.
That begs the next question: If the backup battery is bad, where is it, and can it be replaced?

To all users of XDA II.....Very important....READ ¡¡¡

Warning! Your Xda II can be hard reset after change battery
I experience hard reset after change battery twice, and also our member of www.pdamobiz.com were complain about Xda II can be hard reset so easy. Even change battery in 1-2 mins. So upset!
Fininally I can find the root cause, that's battery cover in the back.
So, today I take the photos to show that is the real cause. Anyone would like to try, don't forget to backup.
......
Any time that you want to change battery, of course you have to open the battery cover in the back. Then after take out the battery, just put the cover on the back. See picture:
Aha! do you know, the cover is metal, and electricity can passthrough it as same as electric wire. Battery backup of Xda II is also only like Big Capacitor, it's pole are still connect to the contacts.
If unfortunatly, the cover move down forward to the contact as picture.
See at Red Circle. Battery backup will discharge through the metal cover immediately. You just know nothing but after insert new battery you will find new screnn as:
Hard Reset!
So, if you don't want to be as this, do not put the cover or anything that conduct electricity over the back of XdaII while no batterty.
So this is only likely to happen if you short out the contacts 'cause you don't put a battery in when you close the lid!
To be honest that's not something I'd do anyway. Interesting, but not really suprising that this could happen. I guess that you, in effect, short out the internal battery.
like the rest of the xda casing the backpanel is not metal but
painted plastic
and even if it were metal then it would be alu which is a pretty lausy conductor
I didn't believe it but he is correct - I just tried it out myself!
The paint used on the plastic does actually conduct electricity (I know it's a different device but hold an XDAI while charging and then lightly touch a second charging unit and you'll get a slight shock!!)
Still it's probably not a problem for most people because most people only remove the battery to change the SIM card or replace the battery and as such wouldn't ever touch the connectors with the case!
It is not painting, it is a metallic film, it is possibly chromium.
hi all ,
the reason why your XDA is loosing all data when you put the battery cover back without the battery is because the cover pushes the red switch !!!
this is the backup battery switch so you are pushing it to off position ! so there will be no power to support the ROM .
XDA is designed in way that when you want to remove your battery you have to unlock the red switch which is the backup battery switch so you will turn it on to support the ROM.
when you take your battery you are not supposed to turn the switch off before you put the main battery back,so when you are placing the back cover there is no way to fit it in place if the switch in the on position so it is pushing on it back to the off position leaving the ROM without power.
Regards.
Hard reset when changing battery... there is more to it
Hi all!
I have read with a lot of interest all the couses you described for hard reset while changing battery, but there must be some more.
When I change batter I pay attention to:
1) the lid
2) the red switch position
They are fine, but still the machine hard reset... I believe the problem might be due to the fact that sometimes after a battery change the XDA does not feel the new battery after I switch the red switch back so it doesn't turn on I loose all the memory... any idea on how to avoid it or be sure that the XDA has good contact with the battery before switching the red and crossing fingers...
had a hard reset too
I had a battery-change hard reset too recently.
I'm 99% sure I didn't screw up on the lid or the red switch.
Scarry. I lost two weeks of stuff that wasn't fully backed up.
I change batteries on a regular basis...
Scarry is a lot of people don't bother to make a backup...
I could care less about a hard reset, i just restore my backup from SD-card and sync.
Jpiek,
for me hard reset is still a pain becouse afterwards due to a change in the datestamp the PPC duplicates or deletes contacts in the PPC... so I need to manage the post-back-up sinc and that takes around one hour... are your backups more convenient? What software do you use?
Thanks,
Chris
I just backup useing the standard Xbackup, then re-sync with my up-to-date Outlook on my PC...
Works just fine for me...
Is anything new about this problem of Hardreset?
Hi all :
Just a little question, ammar :
If actually the red switch connects the backup battery, what happens when the standard battery is gone ? How do the backup battery gets active if we don't act the red switch ??
Thanks

[Q] [HELP] Motorola Battery Question Mark Workaround/ Hack?

I need help. I messed up my Droid 2 restoring a backup and the battery died during SBF. So I did the Macgiver trick where you connect an old stripped usb wire to the battery so that the phone can be tricked into booting up and being flashed. Since then I've had a question mark in my battery icon. It wont read that battery or the battery that I've just purchased and I get the "Invalid Battery" message and the battery wont charge in the phone. Both batteries are official Motorola. I can't send the phone back as its not under warranty. So I have a few questions.
Is the some sort of workaround/ fix for this? Motorola put software on the Droid 2 since Froyo that reads whether or not a battery is official Motorola product. Can the battery software be hacked/ deleted so that I can use my battery as normal?
Wow, we have this same exact situation like a month ago, and since then my fiancee still uses her broken phone . We did the Macgyver trick also and we got the battery with the question mark. We even bought a new battery and it still shows it, tried reflashing with a fully charged battery and nothing changed. We also tried clearing battery stats none of it is working. If anyone knows anything about this problem please let us know. If you get an answer that cures your phone please please please let us know about it. I actually posted your question on Yahoo! Answers since it was the same exact problem that we had and if anyone answers we will post the reply on here.
Thanks a lot and good luck!
I've got the exact same problem. All I did was purchase one of those external chargers so that one battery is always charged. It is annoying, yes, but its not too bad. I'm also looking forward to see if there is a solution, but I doubt it. We probably all fried the contacts on the phone, but we'll see.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
hey, yeah we did the same thing, we bought the second battery yesterday but i have a question, did you try flashing it again with the new battery in? I was wondering if it would work but i want to see if it will before clearing one more time my fiancee's cellphone since theres a fish game that may be lost if we do that.
Thanks a lot.
Brandon
I've SBF'd multiple times since then, and the question mark is still there. I don't think theres a way around it, unfortunately. Personally, it's not really a big deal, but it may be for you.
I just really hate it because I have no clue when my battery dies.
Never had the issue, but one thing comes to mind..why not root, install clockwork recovery and then clear the battery cache?

They said they already tried that.
What exactly is this Macgiver trick? If you have a link, or some info on how it's I might be able to shed some light on this for you guys
The D2 battery is 3.7 volts; USB is 5. You probably blew out the A/D channel used to measure battery level.

Ah, I see so they're hooking up the USB straight to the phone...found it after a little searching...
But i'm curious, wouldn't that only happen if the wires ended up touching the other two terminals, and not just the outer (+) and (-) ones?
Will getting a new oem battery work?
No, replacing the battery will not work if you messed up when connecting the spliced USB charger + and - to the wrong terminals in the phone.
I have exactly same problem. I sliced the usb cable to revive my Droid X when the battery died during sbfing. Now my phone survived but Im stuck with question mark on battery icon. I flashed reflahsed and flashed again but no luck. wiped batt stat but no luck. Tried new OEM battery, no luck.. Put the batt in the freezer for 10min but no luck. I ran out of all the possible solution.
Now I just got the external stand along batt charger from ebay with 2 extra batts. I just carry extra battery since I dont know when the phone will go dead..
I would love to find out if someone can fix this issue. I still got 6 mo to go before I can upgrade.
I HAVE A SOLUTION (worked for me):
When doing the "Macgyver Hack", I jammed the USB wires into the battery. This pushed the metal spring terminals out. After that, the battery terminal springs don't all touch the connectors in the phone.
Take a needle, and carefully pull the battery's metal springs toward each other.
This worked for me.
Also, try this:
Remove battery and unplug phone. Plug phone in (without battery), then turn on (some phones will turn on without a battery). After the logo comes up, insert the battery. This made my phone recognize the battery and get into the OS.
Once the battery is recognized and you can boot to the OS, root the phone and get the battery calibration app (and use it).
I have a Motorola Defy, and used the Macgyver hack, then had the question mark problem for days before figuring this out.
jodaboda, Thank you a ton for that. I've been searching and trying out things to fix this and this is the closest I've come.
Although the Droid 2 doesn't boot up without a battery, I've had to the Macgyver Hack to get it to boot. The battery calibration app reads 100% charged when I am using the Macgyver Hack and is showing that the battery is charging. I'll tell you if it works once my battery is charged and I calibrate.
I wasn't able to get it to work. I think there is potential but my phone eventually died and it wasn't able to fix it. That app can measure the volts correctly tho, which means we should be able to get the battery working again somehow.

I don't have a nan back up from recovery but have read on another thread that you can also fix this by doing a restore of a back up through the recovery from a time before you have had the battery ? issue.. several people have also mentioned that it worked for them.. in my case I don't have a back up before this issue so I cannot confirm.
my phone died noooo
bumping in case anyone has a solution?
please. pretty please.
tried methods above, phone wont boot unless plugged in... i don't care i can't tell what % its at, but i do care it wont boot off battery power.
Tried 2 Ways with no Luck.
1. Power button + volume button down Long press less than a min. ?
2. Plug in for a day or more. ?
Gotto try jadaboda's tip.

My LG G2 will not turn on after installing new battery

I cannot turn on my LG G2 after putting a new battery in it that I bought of LG.
I have tried to hold the vol down and power button together will plugging into power source but to no avail.I have held just the power button while plugging into power but to no avail.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Try to carefully check the electric contacts: re-open the case and press enough all the electrical connectors. I solved this way...
There may also be a chance of damaged battery (it is hard to find an original one): in this case you have to ask for replacement.

I have checked all the connectors umpteen times and they all click into place.
I got the battery from LG so it is a genuine LG battery has stated in my post.
I had same problem with my Optimus G
I change the battery last year with a battery I bought off Ebay without any problems.I then found out the battery was not genuine (not holding its charge) and I bought a battery from LG.When I replaced the battery I bought off Ebay with the battery I bought from LG my G2 would not turn on.
Is there a tool which I could use to test my G2 phone (download a tool/app)?
Could it be an hardware issue?

I bought the battery on ebay, since I don't have access to any LG store.
After a first failed attempt, I removed and reinserted the battery and the phone turned on. I attributed the issue to an electric contact but my assumption could be wrong and there were likely other reasons...
Unfortunately, I am not able to suggest to you any workaround. You may ask directly to LG, where you bought the battery...
There is a hidden menu (3845#*802#) for testing battery and charge efficiency, but phone must be turned on, then you have to use the old battery.
Anyway, I don't think it is an hardware issue.
I bought another battery off eBay to see if it was the battery but the phone still won't turn on.
It sounds not good... Are some electrical contact pins of the phone possibly damaged or dirty?

No,they look alright.
I did press the power button on the phone before I put the white camera cover on and the main white phone cover on.
So much the better!
What possible think could I have damaged?

Sorry, I understood you solved the problem (misunderstanding due to my poor English).
Look carefully at all the pins of the connectors (screen, motherboard, etc.): Are they alright or bent over?
If they are bent over you can try to straighten them with an electronic nipper.
On the contrary, if they are OK, my advice is to go to the LG service center (for example where you bought the new original battery) and ask them to check the phone hardware. Perhaps it is just a stupid issue, easy to solve. It is still a great phone, even though it is 5 five years old, and it's worth it. It is even faster of my most recent Motorola X Play...
Unfortunately, I have not enough experience with this phone, so I can't help you anymore: I own it since few weeks only, because it is my wife old phone. I was just lucky in substituting battery with negligeble issues!
I have looked at all the pins on each connector and they look all in line.
May I have damaged the charging ribbons when I pressed the power button before I put the camera cover and the phone cover back on.
I have noticed the black tape on the camera cover (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LG-G2-Ca...368363?hash=item2833f4ba6b:g:FWsAAOSwIaFZFH5k) is damaged, could this cause my G2 to not turn on?

I don't think so: the power button acts on a switch; you can press on the switch in many other ways, with the same results...
Check instead the electric contact on the camera cover (see 2nd image of the camera cover, top-left of the above link): it is a sort of electrical bridge (closes the circuit). You may verify if it works right by means of a multimeter (null resistance).

Im not good at using multi-meters.
What should I set the range of the multi-meter when testing the electrical bridge on the camera cover?
What should the multi-meter read when testing the electrical bridge to see if it works?
You should simply get zero resistance. Multimeters are easy to use: at first, select to measure resistance, by setting the highest sensitivity (the smallest full-scale), then measure the resistance. There are many tutorial on YouTube.
Please, consider it is possible this is not the problem!
Anyway, I'd suggest you warmly to send the phone at the service centre.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Labs
Yes,I do get zero resistance when testing the electrical bridge on the camera cover.
It will cost alot to have it repaired at the service centre, probably not worth having my G2 repaired bc the battery cost me £40.
You're right, it might not be worth it.
Before throwing away the phone, try to ask where you bought the battery. Perhaps they will find a solution for you.
Another phone with similar specs costs more than 300£, for sure; moreover, most of phones have the cover in glass or alluminium and are more delicate than G2...
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Labs
I have been in touch with LG where I bought the battery from and they said the repair would cost more than I paid for the phone, which I predicted.
I don't think the battery is faulty (I bought another battery of eBay and the phone still won't turn on),unless the eBay battery is faulty too.
Could I have damaged the power switch if I pulled out the power switch connector while the battery was connected?
I am so sorry.
But, just for curiosity, what is the damage?

Edge 7 freezing, no power, overheat

Hello people,
I have problem with my Samsung Edge 7 and please if you can just tell me what can be a problem and on which way should I go to solve this problem I would appreciate it very much. No need for step by step solution just tell me what can I do except send it to Samsung repair shop or recycle it. I will take it apart by myself if needed but I don't have a clue which part should I look to replace or what.
So... the problem is that I manage to charge the device one day when it don't want to charge and after that I managed to turn it on. Everything was working fine, didn't try anything much just unlock screen and put it to sleep.
After that I turned it off so it don't consume battery while I would be able to backup my data. When I was able to do backup I turned it on and it powered up normal so I proceed to backup my contacts (export to SD card).
When the export finishes phone just froze and I have to turn it off with POWER + VOLUME DOWN button combo.
After that few times when I try to power it on it just froze on boot up logo and I turned it off that few times with the same button combination as before. Until it don't want to power on anymore. So I tried to put it on charger to see if anything will happen, and nothing did.
I just left it to sit on my desk and I noticed that the phone is heating but I got no reaction at all from the phone (powering on or charging)
The day after when the battery was drained obviously I managed to charge it up again but when I power it on after it got to 100% charge it froze again and there goes same procedure as before (button combination restart, no response, heating, battery dead, charging...)
So now I can't even charge it anymore and I took out SD card to check if my contacts are there at least. But nothing, that contacts vcf file is not even saved on SD card even I choose that option when exporting my contacts.
Now I don't know what else to do since my phone wont even charge or power on and I would like to backup my data at least and then I can recycle it if I must.
So please if you have a clue just tell me where can I look at what can I try to do.
Thank you in advance and have a nice day
some of sgs has these problem. The motherboard is broke, i had same problem and sent to samsung service, they changed motherboard. I guess it's related to cpu temp sensor, inside the cpu.
Thank you Ganjax for your reply. That was the thing I was afraid of. So all my data goes away with motherboard?
I will wait few more days with some replies even I find your very useful and accurate since you had the same problem.
hey I also have the same issue, putting the phone in the freezer and letting it freeze makes it so that it can turn on for only 5minutes or till when it drops back to room temperature hopefully this will be enough to get your photos back.
millkyway4 thank you for you reply.
I am not in a possibility to try your method because I disassemble my phone and striped down battery for research purposes.
Neither I think that those 5 minutes will be enough to transfer all my data but if I ever reassemble my phone I will give it a shot.
So... Considering my research and striping down the battery the things goes like this (if someone is interested in this topic):
I disassemble the phone and remove the battery. Battery is connected on motherboard by some connector that I don't know the name or type, so if someone knows I would like to know too.
Since I couldn't find positive and negative lead on that connector (because of microscopic leads) little bit down on flat cable, near the battery, I removed coating and manage to find leads and measure voltage of the battery to confirm positive and negative lead.
By the measurements I assume that battery voltage is fine (~3.7V), but when I connect it to external charger which have built in ampere meter the battery doesn't charge as other batteries and ampere meter readings vary by 100mA +/- I set up to be initial charge. In normal case when I charge batteries amperes only goes down by the time the battery charges so I find this event an anomaly.
Since that is the case I removed the chip (from which the flat cable is coming out) that is on the battery assuming that it is causing that anomaly. Leaving the battery with only positive and negative lead that I connected and also measure and put on my external charger. But the same thing happens as with chip, or what is called, on the battery.
Going further with my research I cut down flat cable from battery chip (electronics) and connect positive and negative lead, I found before, directly on my charger on which I adjust voltage on ~3.75 volts and connect the connector with flat cable back to motherboard. So you probably see what I did here but if you don't the research I want to conduct is that my external charger acts as battery for the phone and I try to power it on like that.
In this case ampere meter shows 0 since the current which is flowing trough the phone is none. After I am sure that this is the case I tried to power on my phone with connected external charger like that and my ampere meter shown a current draw of 100-200mA on the POWER button pressed but the phone doesn't turn on.
So now I need someone with a little bit better knowledge of the phone, batteries, working order and type of connections like this to tell me what did I do right and wrong so I can prove that Ganjax statement, and my assumption, that motherboard is dead is really correct.
Ganjax don't mean I don't believe you or something, I appreciate your reply, this is just for research purposes because I would like to play with this stuff and that is the things that interest me.
And if there is some "fanatic" like that to tell me what can I do next and try or point out what should I do and don't make next please leave a comment and we can discuss this matter together and find out something about this case.
Thank you all and have a nice day

Signal drops after battery change.

I have a problem with my Axon 7 (global). Ive decided to change battery on my own one week ago. I was super carefoul with every step i did, no cracks, no damage. I assembled everything togeather and suddenly no signal. Wifi worked perfectly. Now i have this often signal looses which persists even after reboot. Sometimes when I finally catch signal it shows me almost full 4g+, but on the other hand everythig works very sluggish. Super slow internet speeds, even for messeging via whats app for example. I tried to check if this is maybe some software issue. I was on global B03. I could not update to B04 via ota so i decided to downgrade, then install b04. I did, and this solved nothing. Problem persists and phone without wifi is unusable :/ Any ideas how to solve this?:crying:
Connector not seated properly inside it?
I also replaced my battery. The battery behaviour is now normal again but seen no differences in how it runs.
I think that it's not that, I've payed extra attention to this second time that I opened phone. All the connectors I've unplugged, then plugged it again, checked antenna as well. No visable damage to the cable or the connectors.
Thinking about my experience doing the battery, the two most difficult or potentially damaging things were separating the rear cover from it and getting the battery out. Once the cover separated it came off well. It was a hard job getting down under it. The battery was hard to start lifting but with isopropyl alcohol under it, It came up easier the more it was lifted. Maybe something around the battery has been compromised.
Thank you for your response. I did not use alcohol to remove battery, i used hairdryer, and i began to remove battery from other side (the one with antenna). Maybe i burned antenna? Is it possible? Sryly no visible damage, nothing! Everything else works. BT, Wifi, all functions - only signal problem. Any idea what part should i change? I also founded some info in iOS forum somewhere, supposedly iPhone 6 or 7 had similar issue when someone changed battery. They suggested to unplug battery and hold every button for 30-60 seconds, one after another, to "discharge components" or something. I dunno :/
You change the charger board too?
I ordered from Ali only antenna, should i order charging board as well? Anyway, why charging board? Is there some important components that i could have damage? Why not motherboard as well? Antenna is connecting charging and motherboard together. Just wanna know why do you think that i should change charging board as well, maybe Ill learn something new
