After 1 week of use i decide to sell....

Ok having my mda pro for a week now
i must say its much slower, heavier, thicker, bad reception, windows 2005 still to young for use, browsing isnt that great..
and maybe more.
compared to my mda II
So i am gonna sell it ..
Its on the dutch 2nd hand market www.marktplaats.nl
Maybe ill regret it but, its just to big and slow.
Maybe ill get a qtek 2020i or mda III instead

I'm thinking the same too.
I am now wishing I waited for the K-Jam.
I wanted something with a keyboard, but JJ is just too awkward to use.
One thing I am thinking is maybe get a SP5 to carry around daily, and use the JJ as a laptop alternative when I am going to be out of reach of my laptop for a while (a while for me is more than 4 hours)

i'm happy with it.
1. has umts and i love it for video calls
2. has nice UMTS speed
3. has the full keyboard and a balanced notebook-type position
4. nice features and I can place it on the table on trains and in car
so ... i'll keep it.

I think that those wanting a phone first and a PDA second will be disappointed in the JasJar. Those (like me ) wanting a PDA first and phone second, those who want a mini-laptop, will love the JasJar.

I think that's exactly right. I do sometimes (well... often) wish the Jasjar was a bit smaller and somewhat lighter, but it does everything I ask of it and it does exactly what I bought it for. I'm not getting rid of this device until something that can do all this and more comes along.

Well, I think it's fantastic. And it's a lot more stable than my Jam was. I'm using my JasJar far more often and using more functions than I've ever used on a PPC before.
Agreed, there's not a lot of fully compatible software around for it, but honestly, it's a brand new OS and developers are catching up, so that really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, should it!?

Wow! Can't believe people are actually selling their Universal's!!! I guess to each his/her own.

i just wished it could be beter in multimedia
i need it for my work, but awsering phone and working in the agenda is 3 times slower then on my mda II

I don't want a phone first, but JJ is very awkward to use as a phone.
Although a lot of the problems are because I am carrying it closed. When there is a decent case for it so I can carry it in pda mode, most problems will go away:
- You can't tell who's calling without opening the device, which is a two handed operation. Walking down the street with a bag in one hand you have to stop, put the bag down, take jj out of pocket, open it up to see who's calling, close it back and decide what to do with the call
- You can't call out without opening the device, which is a two handed operation. Walking down the street with a bag in one hand you have to stop, put the bag down, take jj out of pocket, make a call, close it back and continue with the call. Even a BT headset doesn't help, because voice calling doesn't work when jj is closed
- Even as a pda it is awkward to open it to just check something. WM5 is operable with a single hand, but you need two hands to open it. Again, this won't be a problem when there is a decent case that allows us to carry it open.
As I said, I will probably keep the jj and get a phone for daily use.
Or get a K-Jam
Also, having bricked the jj 4 days after I bought it and having to wait for 2 weeks for a rom, while fighting with imate support twice daily took the joy out of it I think.

Are you kidding me? JJ is amazing for multimedia. The screen is mind-blowing and with TCPMP its the most amazing little pocket video player around!!!
And regarding the speed of the device, try multi-tasking on the K-JAM and then tell me what you think of the JJ. Besides, it feels a little slow only the first time you open the program, from thereon its smooth sailing. I really feel you need to re-think the whole thing.

Mate, for a person who spent $1000 on a device, i figured you would just spend another $70 to get yourself a BT headset that supports caller ID. Who the heck told you that you have to go through all that circus shenanigans just to answer or make a call?!?! Just use a BT headset with Caller ID!!! With BT voice dial, you never have to actually open the device to make a call. I have been using voice dial since long and its simply SUPERB!!!
Well, i agree that the "bricking" of the device was an unpleasant experience. Still, i feel you should hold on to it for a little longer as your reasons are not really valid for selling it!!!

I regret being an impulsive buyer, because I might not have bought the Jasjar. That being said, I think the oem HTC let us badly down by thinking for us instead of responding to market demands.
Nowadays people want more storage, more memory, more functionality at a reasonable price, u can see the wish list in the wish-list thread, but at the minimum HTC should have put in 128 MB memory and 256 MB rom, to think that devices like the palm offer 4 GB storage means its not a fantasy.
Also robbing customers of the option for usb hosting is not nice, u dont decide what clients want, if its doable still include it and give them the option not to use it if they dont want to.
I am not talking out of thin air, I used to be involved with consultancies that advise for industry.
I hope the next pda from HTC past the Universal will have learned from clients feeback.

Please tell me what you did to make BT voice dial work when the device is closed.
All that happens to me (and some others based on various posts) is I hear the voice prompt, but then nothing happens. This is using the voice dialer that comes with the JJ. If the device is open or in pda mode, BT voice dial works as it should.

Well, i didn't have to do anything. I just paired my BT headset with the JJ and recorder a few voice tags. Closed the device, put it into its pouch and fired away BT voice dial! Thats it. It works a treat.
I just need to press the button on the headset which then initiates the VSD program on the device (which i know because i hear the beep on the headset). Once i hear the beep, i just speak out one of the voice tags and it instantly makes the call!!! I am sure that within a month, there will be a WM 5 update for MS Voice command which will make recording voice tags a thing of the past. Can it get any easier???
For your info, i use a SonyEricsson HBH-662 BT headset which supports caller ID and BT 1.2. I can honestly say that i have NO problems whatsoever with it and am one happy camper!!!

I agree that a small outer display would have been welcome. But it also shows that how you use a cell phone also determines the JasJar's functionality as a phone. For instance, I never really check the caller ID because I always talk to anyone who calls So for me, that isn't an issue but for you it is.
But to be fair, the JasJar isn't my primary phone either. Not because I couldn't use it as such. It's just that my Samsung I730 on Verizon has better coverage and much faster data than GSM on T-Mobile.

ALmost sold my mda pro now.

I think i will try the mda III, or just stick to my mda II.

Is it true that you have to do the flip-and-rotate dance everytime, when you have to receive the call(or make the call) & when you dont want to use the speakerphone ??

I leave my phone in the closed clam position, got Microsoft Voice which tells me who's calling, so all I have to do is push the red or green on the side to ignore/answer the call...

but what if you are in laptop/clamshell mode?
then do u have to do the flip and rotate dance?

If you are laptop/clamshell mode, you can just answer with the buttons on the hinge, and answer the call with it shut. You probably wouldn't want it unnecessarily rotated, since you'll get face grease on your screen.
If you want to see who's calling, a quick lift and shut is all you need.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I can tell you that my experience thus far has been really ****ty as far as using this unit as a phone. the reason I say this, is that despite having updated my unit to the latest ROM upgrade , I'm still experiencing missed calls!
This despite my repeated attempts at contacting the clowns at the live online service at imate. Their email service has been better, but has yet to offer resolution to this immense problem. I say immense b/c I have paid around a grand for a pda with a phone which is completely unreliable as a phone.
Bear in mind, this is my imate experience.

I have never had any problem with the phone. But I have taken a couple of actions:
1. Disable the video phone component, it is bloaty and if you dont use video phones saves 3mb of operating RAM
2. I extended the time it takes to go through to voice mail from 10 seconds to 30 seconds
3. I dont vet any calls, if available, I just answer from the hinge whilst close, so I dont do any flipping to see first
4. My phone always answers at the beginning of the second ring, that with a 30 seconds to voice mail works fine
5. I never let my phone go below 15mb of available ram so it doesnt slow down.
So as a phone, its fine, as a pda its brilliant.

Can't say I use the camera much, except perhaps for the strange or abnormal chest xray I may see at work. Otherwise useless.
Yes, I ended up paying a grand for this thing. Impulse purchase. What did you pay jojo?

I paid $1500 AUD, about $1100 USD.
I have always bought my phone outright for an unlocked phone that is not dependent or tied into a phone network.
Plus there are extended taxation benefits....

I love mine as a phone, best reception on both ends I have ever found with a phone.
Like everyones said, you can essentially answer a call 4 ways.
1. Default (clamshell shut)
2. Open it and flip it to portrait mode
3. Open it and use it in laptop mode w/speaker phone
4. Bluetooth headset.
personally the idea of Microsoft Voice Command sounds good cos I like to know whos calling, have it tell me would be pleasent
In any case, despite the ringtone not kicking in till the end of the second ring, I have scarecely missed a call. Actually short of not having the phone in an audible radius of me I dont think I have missed a call.
Its always good to have system memory but I dont notice a change in the phone service when my ram dips below 15mb.

The answer to your question is yes. You can answer the phone with the clamshell shut.
Cons:
You will not be able to see who is calling.
You will need bluetooth or wired headset to answer the phone.
Caller ID numbers are available but not the caller name on Bluetooth devices like the BT800.
Personally, I use my Qtek 9000 more as a PDA than a phone.
It's a much better PDA than it is a phone. The keyboard and the screen on the Universal are the main reason why I bought it.
My advise, if you're planning on using it more as a phone than a PDA, then consider other devices. As a phone, it's heavy and bulky. As a PDA, I can only sing praises (except for the occasional soft resets that I have to do).
FYI, here are the main uses that I use the Universal for:
1). Streaming music while I'm driving
2). Watching avi files while I'm on break
3). Daily planner
4). Going online to check on info
5). GPS device with software and an external bluetooth GPS receiver
6). MSN messenger while I'm on road trips
Hope that helps in your decision.
I don't know how much you'll be paying for the Universal. I did pay a lot for it (since it's not available in the US with any cellular companies) but I consider one of the best investments I've made in a PDA/Phone.

Incorrect, the phone will answer perfectly well if you just pick it up and press the green button on the hinge. The three holes on the right of the case are for the sound to come through and the mic is at the bottom on the left of the keyboard.
This is a well thought out device.
If you have personalised ringtones for most of your contacts you should have a pretty good idea of who is calling anyway.

Or... Get Microsoft Voice 1.5, and the fantastic patch by R. Works A1 on mine, I keep the phone clam shut in a zip case. And get a "Call from X" loud and clear telling me who's calling... no need to open or owt, just red/green on the hinge... fantastic...

O2 XDA Stealth

O2 have released again, wouldnt you think O2 might sort out the issue they have with so many Atom and Exec's before releasing yet another possibly faulty product? Why are retailers still disributing the Atom when 90% of them are faulty. I have checked numurous retail outlets that have Atom and Exec's on working display that blatantly have the mosquito LCD screen noise. I will do whatever I must do to get a refund on all my Atom's as they all are unbearable to hold against the ear whilst on a phone call, nobody wants bad publicity but as a consumer we expect the standards of the products we buy to match the price we pay.

O2 Stealth Review
Dear all
Don't quite understand why no one has given detailed opinion on this fine product from the O2 line of pda cellphones, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents (I've been using it for a week now, as a replacement phone for my O2 xda mini (ie Magician), the motherboard finally having failed after 1 year and 3 months of use due to instability issues:
1. OS
A very stable os running WM 5.0, and extremely efficient. 2 things that could have been improved, namely, the 2 touch screen items on the bottom left and right hand corners cannot be accessed without using the touch screen (ie with the Prophet, you could use the keypad to access these). Presumably, O2 wanted to keep the call and cancel functions exclusive. The 2nd aspect is the soft reset, which causes the volume to go back to full each time you do it. Fortunately, you'll find the device rarely crashes (the onboard memory is about 3 times the size of the Magician). Compatible with the Kingston 2GB mini sd card.
2. Bluetooth
Using the tornado cab to stream a2dp, the maximum volume is slightly disappointing (ie not loud enough even at max setting0, but something I can live with. Music streaming drops off more than the Magician, but again this is a minor quibble (just wear a shirt with a front pocket, or stick it in your jacket pocket rather than in your pant pockets).
3. Voice Quality
Quite good, and certainly improved over the Magician. Haven't tried using the handsfree yet, but HK is such a loud place that it's not gonna make much of a difference anyway.
4. Picture Quality
Stellar - with the flash function built in, you basically have a fully functional digital camera that takes fantastic pictures by day or by night. The picture frames that used to be available for the Magician or Prophet is now not featured in the photo mode, and must be added on by the Photo Editor.
5. Wi-Fi
Still slow, but really, cellphone size screens shouldn't be used to surf the net anyway. It's useful when you just want to quickly check some quick details (ie address of a restaurant) while you're on the move. Pocket MSN is a real boon to use.
6. Downloadable WM5.0 Applications
My main concern is finding a good emulator for my GBA and SNES games. Haven't located one for the SNES, and I still have to figure out how to make Gnuboy 1.0.3 work, but that's not O2's fault.
7. Recording
My favorite new feature - it's so simplistic that it's perfect for my meetings. You press one button to record, and the same button to stop. No more hassle having to choose recording quality (as with the Magician).
To conclude, this is probably the most fault free device O2 has released to date. I understand there were concerns that other Gigabyte (that's the OEM for the Stealth) cellphones weren't up to par, but for the record, Gigabyte is the largest motherboard maker in the ROC, and I would rather bank on my money with them than with Quanta (the OEM for the Atom)!

Haha sorry guys for posting an essentially pointless thread but I've been ALWAYS wanting an Advantage and I finally got one coming for a good deal. I'm pretty geeked. I also have a Touch as a backup so I may only use this during certain situtations. My main and ONLY concern was that it doesn't have an earpiece but I'll figure something out. I think I may take a BT headset apart and flatten it to the back or something. I'm sure I'll post my efforts here so look out.
Does anyone have a suggestion to what the "best" ROM is available? I'm looking for speed and stability and one that works with GSEN on an x7500.

Coolest thing is when watching videos in CorePlayer, with GSEN, it rotates on the fly, and it doesn;t matter how you have the thing aligned, it'll always show it correctly

Sweet can't wait. My luck it won't work on the 7500...

if you want gsen to work with your 7500, you would have to download roms made by irus or sogarth. i've installed these on my 7500 and gsen works just fine. if you don't install these roms, most likely you will come up with a message saying "cannot locate gsen 3" or something like that. so far these roms that they've released are the best for the 7500 (if you want to have the autorotate feature). although gsen will work, there are many applications / games (ported out from the htc diamond) that work for some and at the same don't work at all for others.
however, roms by michy are also fantastic...though they don't support gsen....but i think he's working on that =)

I recently went back to using an old flip phone for a week (trip to Disney, didn't want to loose or damage my Athena) and it definitely made me yearn for ease-of-use for simple phone calls. But, with a device that can almost literally do everything you have to accept some trade-off.
Many of us use the Jabra BT8010. It somewhat makes up for the shortfalls since its has vibrate, caller ID, and gives you a private earpiece. Also gives you stereo of you want that.
I've been thinking about trying to find a cheap flip or candybar phone that supports bluetooth HFP with Athena as host, or HSP, or PBAP and SAP, or maybe CTP ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_profile ). Bottom line, the ability to use the dedicated phone as a phone without having its own SIM. But, it would be a larger solution than just sticking with my 8010 and would probably need charging every other day so I stick with my 8010. The battery on the 8010 lasts forever.

Good info thanks alot. Yeah I sometimes take a bunch of calls and sometimes hardly ever. I'm thinking I'm just going to ignore calls that I can call back later in private over speaker. I'm also going to try and stick my ear up to the speaker(probably not possible since the speakers look located on the side). Holy $hi4 would that be hilarious looking. But my main prob will be the calls that I have to take in public... I'm serious about flattening out a BT headset to the back or side.
Have you seen the guy who put a BT headset in a glove? Same concept. Take apart a BT headset it ends up being mostly wires and/or a little chip(s). Maybe put a slight mold/cover over it so there might be a minimum hump. But at the size it already is wouldn't be a deal breaker in any shape or form. It however would need to be charged separately. I'm going to be carrying it without keyboard or case so I'm trying to minimalize it's "footprint" all around. Having to carry another piece of tech like a BT headset I think would get very annoying. I will probably keep one in the car though.
Speaking of the car, thats another reason I'm getting this. My commute to work just doubled and I always wanted a "car computer". IMHO mounting an Advantage(or a UMPC for that matter) is the quickest easiest way to do that. I can watch the news on my way home from work via Sling(not that I would ever do that because it's very dangerous and probably illegal). Check realtime weather not to mention big screen GPS. Oh can't wait to test Live Search with the Satellite view. I also got some webcams set around my house that now I can watch in VGA!

not sure what you find so hard about the Athena as a phone.
but using any BT headset, specially the Jabra BT8010, you can do a simple 1 click, and say who you want to dial, and it dials it for you.
sooooo easy to use.
my Palm Treo never worked so well, even with th same features.

Dedicated phones are 1-hand friendly, with all my other phones (since 1993) I've been able to use memory dialing or even dial a new number without even looking at the phone while going down the road.
With my BT in my pocket where I can't get it when I'm driving, its a multi-step process to make an outgoing phone call right from the Athena... turn off BT takes 3 button presses, then dialing can take from 2 to many more... then turn BT back on when I'm done... and most if it also can't be done with one hand.
Nothing as easy as using a dedicated phone, even with my old Motorola Star-Tac.

hey juiceppc - also make sure you upgrade your phone to radio 1.58 if you are often in 3G coverage. Otherwise I recommend 1.57.

Got my new HD from Uk Mobiles. Was really looking forward to it. What a let down. Is this really the phone that is raved about? What does it give me that my Tytn didn't apart from a bigger screen, welcome but not essential, and built in GPS?
It is no faster in real use, the volume is so low when using Tom Tom that it can't be heard (unlike my Tytn which needed turning down and could be used in my old diesel Transit with no problems) and the lag on the GPS is so bad that you need to stop on roundabouts for a cup of tea and a biscuit so that it can catch up and show you which exit to take (if the sound worked I would have known because Jane would have told me).
It only changes orientation automatically in one or two items of software and it came with a rubbish little carry bag instead of the very usable belt holder that came with the Tytn.
Most of the software that is available was available on the Tytn, it seems to be only the extra screen real estate that makes a real difference.
It has no external buttons, something I didn't realise I would miss.
It's just as crap at syncing over bluetooth as the Tytn, I know that's a software issue but it just adds to the frustration and disapointment.
edit: Orange have identified a fault using a flow chart questionaire and have given me a fault code, Uk Mobiles are replacing the phone. If I can't come up with fixes for my issues, or rather the phone's issue my own are to deeply ingrained, before the new one arrives it's up on ebay.
What am I missing? Can it be turned into a usable phone or should I sell it on ebay, seek out a second hand TytnII and accept that I can't handle change?

Volume on mine is too loud actually,
Get HDTweak to enable the louder volume
Orientation can be changed in almost every app.
I use Mobile Magic to manage my Orientation apps
I have also fully tweaked my phone and I love it also coming form a Tytn.
I also miss the hardware buttons and most of all the slide out keyboard but I can now type just as fast on the softboard.
Your right about the speed not being any quicker but I can cope as can the phone.
My advice is if you feel like you say then sell it. however as with all HTC phones they have to be tweaked to get the most out of them.
That's why this place is such a god-send, Without this forum I doubt that many of us would own a HTC device.

Graeme, I know you're pain. When I got mine last November I struggled for a week to get it to sync with my exchange server and I had bluetooth issues as well. The stock rom seemed unstable and slow. I don't have any of those issues anymore and haven't for a long time. May I suggest trying a cooked rom. There are some great chefs in this forum that have refined and tweaked things such that, in my opinion, allow the HD to run the way it was intended...smooth and fast. My HD is solid. My point is, before you put it up on ebay, give one of these roms a look.

I'm sorry to hear you feel this way. I know others feel the same and similar threads have been created. Would recommend sticking with phone and trying to become adjusted to it. Read up opn other threads andpossible use software to improve phone. Plenty available on thjese forums if you search.
