Is Vodafone VPA compact sim-free? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

If you are one of the lucky owner of VPA compact, please let me know if it is sim-free. Thank you very much.

Being a vodafone device I am sure its not sim free as it would be sold with a contract, however I think you meant was the device simlocked or not to which I would have to say I am not sure. In my experience however when a network has gone through the effort to cusstomise a device, the chances that is it simlocked is quite high
simfree - sold without sim
sim locked - sold locked for use on a particular network

How can you tell if my XDA is Locked

Well just got my XDA and Im unsure if my phone is locked or not, I have put in a o2 PAYG sim card
Put a vodafone or another service providers sim in to the xda, it will then become obvious if it is locked as it will ask for sid code if it is.
worth a try putting in my old mans contract sim in it, but its seems to be working on my o2 PAYG so I aint really worried if its locked or not

WARNING: T-Mobile MDA Vario 2 (=Hermes) WILL be Netlocked

According to the T-Mobile Germany Homepage (http://www.t-mobile.de/shop/handy/0,4855,2963-_5540-0-1-0,00.html).
So, for god's sake, if you are in Germany, better buy the O2 Trion (=Hermes), which is not locked (http://shop2.o2online.de/o2/interes...duration=24&salesChannel=SHOP&categoryId=1120)
it's true
i hold today some in my hands -> Netlog
isnt there a way of unlocking it....?
I'm happy to say the Vodafonev1605 is comletely unlocked. I tried a T Mobile sim in it with success.
I'm assuming this is still the case in Germany too.
PTM
funny they are unlocked in germany, cause in the UK they're all locked whatever the network (on contracts). But maybe the phones are more heavily subsidised in the Uk than they are in germany..
Got the MDA VarioII on t-mobile UK, and can confirm it is network locked
T-Mobiles MDA Vario II is NetLocked in Germany, whereas the o2 Trion isn't. Unlocking whithin the 2 years period is 99,95 € from T-Mobile, after that time it's free. Right now there is no free tool to unlock a Hermes, as far as I know. But at http://www.imei-check.co.uk/m3100unlock.php you can unlock it for aprox. 30,- €.

Can I purchase a pay-as-you-go SIM in the US?

I'm taking my T-Mobile Vario II from the UK to the US next month and I was wondering if I can simply buy a PAYG SIM card in the States and use this on my phone while I'm there?
I know that the phone is locked so can I buy a T-Mobile SIM and use that?
Cheers.
Out of interest is there any reason why you do not unlock your phone first?
Sure, Cingular and T-mobile both sell prepaid sim cards (though you may be better off trying to get one on ebay first).
A T-mobile UK phone will NOT accept a T-mobile US sim without unlocking it, they are considered different networks and a phone locks itself to the network code.
Keep in mind though that in the US we don't have prepaid data like in the UK. PAYG in the US lacks many other things like roaming and cheap calls abroad.

To be honest, I don't know how to! I have a T-Mobile Vario II with the standard ROM.
Are PAYG SIMS available in Canada?
Is Canada considered 'abroad' with regard to a US SIM? And vice versa?
I'm going to both Canada and the US this year and want to know the score.
Thanks

When I was in Canada in July, Tmobile2Go SIM would *NOT* register. Note that in late '06 Tmo said 2Go SIMs would get roaming - dunno if that applies to Canada or not though. I just looked online and I'm still not sure You can easily pick up a Nokia 6030 here with a Tmo2Go SIM for ~$40. If you unlock and sell the 6030 it's cheaper than buying a SIM alone from Tmobile.
If your Vario II is a Hermes (I don't know T-mobile model names), you should have little trouble unlocking it using the Wiki instructions here.
PM me if you need help acquiring a US SIM card.
HTH,
Richard
Only Rogers pay as you go sim card has US roaming, but that's really expensive!

IS the Touch HD

Hi,
i'm purchasing this device from a retailer, will be this unlocked? I need to use a vodafone sim with this..
If it's not, can it be easily unlocked?
thanks
It will be SIM free (unlocked) yes. I have a Vodafone SIM in mine.
Of the UK networks apparently only Orange have these exclusively to supply [for 3 months at least - although I dont think they have them in stores yet??] but I believe that they'll be very simple to unlock in any case.

Where can I get the mine unlocked from and how much will it cost?

Buy O2 Z3 compact to unlock/unbrand?

Really love everything I've seen about this phone and I'm currently looking at finding it for the best price. I'd rather keep my cheap sim only deal and buy it outright. Anyway the best price I can see around is from O2 at only £289.99 (then cashback from Quidco/Topcashback brings it down to £275). They also seem to allow unlocking to other networks (https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset Unlocking Form).
I've been reading here and can see that there is a way to root the phone and install a custom OS without falling into Sony's DRM trap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/how-to-root-backup-drm-keys-t3013343/page13). So I can unlock it and remove any O2 specific branding their might be in the OS.
However the last thing I need to know is this. Does this model have any O2 specific branding on the phone itself (as in logo's on the casing ect?).
If anyone with the O2 model could just let me know I'd appreciate it.
I just got this phone, No O2 branding on case, boot animation is O2 bubbles and a couple of apps inside.
But the biggest setback is the service configuration for Boot loader unlock allowed = NO
So I think I can get root but that all! :crying:
Yup o2 give you devices with no ability to unlock bootloader
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Premium HD app
O2 Slovakia gave out Z3C with unlockable BL + Generic CE1 firmware (no carrier BS).
Thanks to everyone for the replies. I couldnt live with a phone that's impossible to customize, especially with branding on it. So my next option is a D5833 version of the phone for £289. I believe this is the Asian version? But looking at the wireless bands it supports it would seem it will be fine on EE in the UK?
Ok, I checked out the manual for the Z3 Compact D5833 against the wireless bands used in the UK and it supports all those used by EE (2G, 3G and 4G) and only doesn't support 4G on Three and O2. I usually go with any of the EE network providers as its best in my area so I've gone with this phone for £289, delivered tomorrow, can't wait

Are you sure? I bought an unbranded one from giffgaff. Using one of their sims which use the O2 network and the phone displays a 4g signal
I bought the D5803 when it was £239.99 (+free Chromecast) on O2 PAYG. The firmware is O2 specific and branded, but easily changed to the 3 firmware by flashing. No logos on the handset itself.
The biggest pain was getting it unlocked via code, the codes are much more expensive for this phone on eBay. One seller couldn't get me a code after a week of waiting, then another got me one in 24 hours (for £10).
Really happy with it so far and an absolute bargain for a brand-new phone from an official retailer.
I have from o2 germany. Just some bloatware. No hw brandind,bl unlockable. Just debranded it with ce1 fw
