s100 and Linux - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Does anyone have tried to install a dual boot with Linux and GPE?

Yeah, I can get it to work. But there is no phone support!and i had a major problem getting in contact with the device (had 2 have a friend of mine do it) using USB. (normally I’d use serial of compact flash for file transfers etc. when using Linux on a PPC device)
Other then that there is not much fun having an i-mate Jam phone with no phone, so i switched back.

will this (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HimalayaLinuxBooting) works also on magician?

how do i do this, what files to d/l where can i get it ? please help

follow the link above

Dear ALL,
1)Is there any way to have 2 opering systems(linux and windows) on Magican simutanious like on iPAQs ?
2)How to activate gsm\gprs in linux?

booting linux
Does the Himalaya kernel really boots on an Magician?
I will make a try....
BTW porting the linux kernel didn't seems to be an hard work (but i'm not a kernel developper), because the Magician architecture is not so far from Himalaya one, and the PXA272 is allready supported by linux (see linux2.6 sources)
The realy big problem is to control all hardware devices, from USB to touchpad and most important and hard : the Phone.
Hope there is as little differences as possible between HTC hardwares.

trying to put my backpack cf to work in 2005

ok so i get all the info i think from 2003se and try to put in 2005
but it doenst do anything
also replaced a htcbpdsl.dll form a BA cab with a 2003se himalaya and it didnt work also
my register files are in the rar lol
any input will be great
talking alone here lol
ok found that here isnt any pcmcia or in HKLM/drivers/builtin
maybe thats why no disk drive for cf card
dont have any pcmcia.dll file to use
missing a file pcmcia.dll
none of the win2005 have pcmcia.dll
so that means that unless someone get a diferent aproach there will be no backpack cf card working in BUZZMOBILE2005
hope never dies i will hope
for the time will use 1.50g thats the one who worked best for me
will keep on trying lol
I also want it badly. I can't use my CF wifi card.........
progress so far litle but steady
ok so it seems that backup.dll is ok it as the primary function working is working a shortcut muste be in windows/startup for it to play a double sound after a reset
the rest is pcmcia and there is nothing on it about pcmcia not pcmcia.dll or anything pcmcia in rom files
backpack-pcmcia goes in 3 directions serial ----atadisk ----- Sramdisk
my cf memory cards are all atadisk dont know why but they are
atadisk is there but relating it to backpack its the problem for now
no more news i dont yet know how to create a disk partion based on the atadisk device based on pcmcia and dont know if its fat fastfat ou ntfs yet
help from a god is so wellcome and toenailed as been great
thank to BUZZ for giving me this lol BUZMOBILE is great
and thanks to toenailed for the time taken to help and continue to help me
be back for sure with news
found some info
here
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/ng/microsoft.public.windowsce.platbuilder/post22009803.asp
hum what next
1. Is the PCMCIA.dll on 5.0 same as in 4.2?
NO.
2.Where I can find the source codes of pcc_serv.dll
in PB.
public\common\oak\drivers\pccard\mdd
3. What the difference of the PCMCIA that exist in the drivers\PCCARD\PCMCIA
and drivers\PCMCIA?
drivers\PCMCIA is deperacate. It should not be used.
the drivers\PCCARD\PCMCIA is compatiable driver that make old (pre-4.2
PCMCIA driver works) on new system (after 5.0).
4.Does the ATADisk driver is follow the new Architecture? If this answer is
not, how to verify the driver that follow the newr architecture?
The ATADisk still works as legacy mode.
all tests made in
BUZZMOBILE 1.50g that was what god toenailed told me was best
and i strongly beleave in him
some more tests
after reading that i tryed to put all register entrys in hklm\drivers\pccard\pcmcia
but it dint work also so i revert back
pcmcia.dll problably must be recompiled with magneto i raly dont know how
find out how register setng are layout in pccard\pcmcia......
hope never dies just me eventualy
and the monolog continues
well still digging as toenailed told me to i found one more thing
it apears that i need the Buzzmobile g version of pcmcia.dll cos they changed
the way that works and there isnt one for this version
i did realyze that for me to have one i have to be a developper and have the package to write software for a xcale arm cpu lol
thats not the case and waiting is in order ....
i will put a file i found that demostrate the problem lol
hope never dies.........
got a lot of reading to do
well who said that god things doent take a lot of work?
its true it does so i have a lot of reading to do if i find something i will definetly post here
after i read a lot more i tryed the hardway lol
and so i dismantle it to see what it was made of lol chips etc
there are two zones compitly cover by a metal case and :-( didnt see anything
one thing i notice the batery is replaceble i removed it so if that goes i can put another one there is almost the same size of a nokia batery with 4 pins on it
didnt wont to remove the metal cases 2 of them cos i dont have the required equiment with me but who knows....later i will
so my saga continues lol
hope never dies.......
Hi 'great guy',
I wish i could help in your continuing saga but, don't know how since I don't own a backpack.
I found a driver file from source O2 related to the backpack. It's intended for the presentation software & not for the CF but who knows there's something new inside :?:
- rhmartin -
This file is for VGA output to monitor or other display unit.
The VGA output is great for WM5 but not the CF drive.
I thought I've said so ... :?
you guys are great
trying to help and everything thankyou
its true that cab file deals only with a bug in 1.72 O2 rom
it doent do anything to CF becouse CF ists a diferent area of the drivers
the guys on m$ did change the way pcmcia drivers works on 2k5 so now
we have agnostic drivers made explicity to 2k5 or something called legacy drivers made for compatibility to previous CE
i have two choices none of them at this time
one is i wait that CF card makers make a 2005 driver for there CF that must be agnostic ones
or
i wait that someone release a version with pcc_serv.dll driver there most unlikly cos it gets renamed at compile time to pcmcia.dll
i have a question for you guys anyone with a GPS system in CF works in 2005?
many thanks to rhmartin that one i could have missed so thank you aggain for alerting me .
desperate action
so i cant get it to work yet what i did
i get another one this with 2003se taped the two and use bluetoof to transfer files
now my backpack is working in 2005 ))
a nice brick i have made
hope never dies .........
CF card on Backpack
Hi Rectrc
I am going through same problem of cf card, tried with cf wifi drivers still nothing :!:. Searched MSDN Library & Technical Resources no results. Can u help.
Regards
Ravi
hi rave
if you read the rest of the post here you will found out that i still cant put it to work :-(
just the last one glueing two of them (its a joke lol)
but i still have hope when the first CF 2005 drivers start to apear.....
hope never dies.....
my findings so far
so i did get the pcmcia.dll form 2003 and
a pcmcia.dll from 2003se
i found out that they both call functions inside coredll.dll and not backpack.dll so this mean that it was realy nothing in backup.dll about pcmicia or the drive itself
those funtions are in coredll.dll 2003 and in coredll 2003se and i dont know if they exist in 2005 so
for now i will stop my quest until some of this guys here get a rom dump of 2005 that i can check
i have learned alot about this gismo in the past two weeks that i need to rest and put my thinking in order
i found out also that its not easy to replace a file inside a rom.....:-(
my device did go to even or limbo for a while when i tried that :-S
post new info when i get it

Himalya WM5

Hey guys,
Newbie here
I have a himalya(XDAII)
Rom Vers. 1.66.00 WWE
Radio 1.10.00
I want 2 know whether i should upgrade to WM5 or not
I mean is it really worth it or not
Can any one help and guide me step by step
[/b]
...
Well the upgrade to WM 5.0 is not so easy and clear (for newbie) as the upgrade for WM2003SE. I mean the additional installations of postinstallfixes,DOCtools,RAMdisk,MMS,etc(all things must be installed separately, while 2003se's ROM is completely prepared). Anyway try the web server made by our King of Himalaya (BL) http://buzzdev.net
it is described there a lot about,or try the discussion board for WM5 especially.
I want to notice you for few recommended steps:
1. what size of RAMdisk do you want to use? (My recommendation is 64/64).
2. flash ROM image patched with current RAMdisk size (Use HimaUpgradeUt_noID)
3. install DOCtools to raise up your Storage space
4. do a hard-reset(for DOCtools)
5. after start-up install PostInstallFixes(shipped in zip with ROM image)
6. install RAMdisk with your preffered size
7. Install MMS
8. beware of installation of old software(some software is not able to run under WM5)
If you will have any question,I can maybe help.
Thanx
wat i really want 2 know is whether upgrading 2 WM5 would be worth the trouble or not.....i mean is the OS really that gr8??
i'm a new user of O2 and dont want 2 fiddle 2 much with my fone coz i might wreck it!!
i'll only do an upgrade if WM5 provides me with some additional utilities otherwise i'm quite happy with WM2003...
...
Well there are 3 major problems with WM5:
-I am still unable to establish ActiveSync connection via USB(you need at least ASv4.0)(I am using BT for connection)
-The camera software is really crap and portation from 2003se is not yet done
-Sometimes there's a problem with phone(call answer,establish,end etc.)
Anything else is really good and better than before. The system is running rock-solid without crashes. The biggest + is that this PPC system is also possible to install(and run)Smartphone applications. Don't be afraid of upgrading. Just beware of bootloader upgrade and you can't wreck it. When the flashing procedure will be unsuccessful, just start the upgrade again and it must working. But read all things carefully about upgrade, what is DOCtools, what is RAMdisk etc. that you can purely understand it.
I've tried it twice and went back to WM2003se twice.
I found it annoying that my camera and record buttons stopped working.
Other than that WM2005 was a nice OS to use.
Pity there isn't a final release for the XDA II.
...
It can't be official for Himalaya, coz the hardware isn't designed for WM5. Especially the memory system(128RAM,32Flash). This new OS has a different memory organisation, that uses Flash for all things including installed software while RAM is used only for running system and apps. Therefore you will need this combination at least:128Flash,64RAM. Himalaya basically offer 128RAM for running(too much)and 32MB as a storage(too low).

I didn't notice any problem with buttons. It is also working the AEBPlus utility problemless. The flashback know I also. Once tried Magneto, flashed back to 2003se. And again and again and again...coz a lot of problems I've had with the system. Then I've studying buzzdev.net and step-by-step solved problems. Now I have it totally and it's running great.
Hi
I'm running WM2005 at the minute, but want to go back to WM2003SE, as I'm having problems syncing with hardware at work.
Only problem is, since I changed laptops, I can't get my XDA2 to connect with my PC at all! I've tried installing latest ActiveSync 4 from Microsoft site on my home PC (thinking there are fewer things to stop it syncing on the home PC), so that I can go back to WM2003SE.
However, 2 problems:
- 1) still can't make a connection with the PC - don't even have the Code 28 problem anymore (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264693/en-us) as the system installs a Network Adaptor device driver called "Windows Mobile-based Device"
- 2) once I do connect, unsure of how to go back to WM2003SE - thinking I could simply run the Xda_II_172181_Final.exe ROM file that I downloaded from O2 UK.
If anyone can shed any light, would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to this, so go easy on me!
Would like to be able to continue running with my Vodafone SIM once this is sorted.
Thanks.
...
As I wrote:
>1. I am still unable to connect via USB. I am using Bluetooth. Maybe I need SP2 for WinXP. Don't know. AS4 is using the connection with WM5 little bit differently as 2003se. This connection goes via network connection, not directly. Try this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
>2. For flashing another ROM image:Just use HimaUpgradeUt_noID.exe with current OS image file nk.nbf to flash. These files you can download at the FTP of this server. The nk.nbf filename is the same for all ROM images, therefore be sure of version. Copy these 2 files to same directory, put your Himalaya to bootloader mode and start the exefile.

Hmm...
Perhaps i should have a good read of the buzzdev forums and try again.
Other than that I'm going to be due an Upgrade in fecuary so i might just stick with 2003se and get a WM5 sevice when my upgrade comes. 8)
I'm glad i got the XDA II. I was using a P900 but having a pocket PC phoner seems better for me.
...
Well the WM5 system for XDA II will never have an official release. When I was buying my MDA II,I've had two choises(MDA II vs.P900). Some + was for MDA,some for SE. In total that was two equable devices. I bought my Himalaya due the price was a little bit lower. Now the SE-P900 costs in a second hand 200Euro and MDA II 400Euro. MDA II is much better than P900. The hardware and as well the software. Now I know, that it was my good choice to take MDA II instead of P900. Now when it is possible to use UNofficial Magneto is the Himalaya back on the top.

You start a program named haret
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HaRETDownloadSite
it loads linux kernel from SD into RAM, kills wince and starts linux.
We are working on linux for the HTC Universal
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=UniversalProgress
but the LCD is not yet working properly.
Running Linux on a similar phone (HTC Blueangel) is described here
http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/BlueAngel
Thanks for information, sorry I cannot help Im only just learning vb.net programming with WM5.0 SDK so I not very experienced.
Will your first option work on XDA exec as it been tested?

Prophet similar to HTC Wizard - Help porting Linux to them!

Hello there,
as many of you may already know, the HTC Prophet shares a lot of its hardware with the HTC Wizard. We, the Linwizard Project, aim to port Linux to this OMAP-platform, as other users did port Linux for PXA-based devices like HTC Universal...etc.
I just want to invite you Prophet Users to checkout our project. Our procedure and yet available kernel should also run on your phone....
http://linwizard.sourceforge.net
Greetings,
Maui
Hi, I want to install Linux on my new Qtek s200, but I don't know how to do that. What is the project's actual status? I hate WM5
Is there any updates to this as yet? I would really love to see this ported/Running to my HTC prophet
Running it now
Yes, there has been some progress... the basic PDA functions are available: X runs, touchscreen works making it possible to run GPE on it:
Here's a link to a recent build which works reasonably well. It contains the f*ugly GPE shell so it is not pretty to look at, but it does work.
http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/embedded/linwizard/gizard-20081108.tar.bz2
To try this for yourself, download the image, unpack the tarball and copy the entire contents to a directory on your SD-card. Go into that directory and run haret-0.5.2.exe. Run the 'default.txt' configuration.
Once the kernel boots it will start a telnet daemon on 10.100.0.1:23. Configure your side of the rndis network to be 10.100.0.2 (ifconfig usb0 10.100.0.2 on Linux, whatever on Windows) and telnet 10.100.0.1. Login as root, there is no password. Once logged in run startx to get GPE up and running.
Once GPE runs you'll want to add the onscreen keyboard to the panel. To do this tap-and-hold on the taskbar (bottom of screen) and add the 'input selector'. This gives you an on-screen keyboard just like the WM-one. Add a terminal launcher as well to get access to an xterm.
If all this is gibberish to you you might want to learn some unix/linux before you try...
Thanks alot it works on my prophet it's very fast to but am unable to login as root is there a way I can login to linux without using typing root? if not can u help me with the telneting into it please what software do I have to use on my pc it's a Windows is there anysite with instructions? I like it alot but since the prophet dont got a keyboard on it's own am not able to login please help and Thanks in Advance
Booting and running Linux on the Prophet
Most of what you need to boot and run Linux is described on the linwizard project site:
http://linwizard.wiki.sourceforge.net/
The version offered on the site is out of date - it does not do much more than boot the kernel which you can control through SSH (on 10.100.0.1:22).
To do some more with Linux you'll want to get a newer release. The one mentioned in the previous posting is a good example of where the project is now: relatively complete PDA-support but no real GSM support - so you can not use it as a phone...
To see Linux in action you download the tarball, untar it on your SD-card (either in a card reader on your PC or by untarring it on the PC and transferring all files to a directory below /Storage Card/. Once that is done you are well advised to do a soft reset to clear some memory as haret - the program used to push Windows Mobile out of the way and replace it with Linux - likes memory. After the (optional but advisable) soft reset you take your $favourite_file_manager to the directory where you put the contents of the tarball, execute haret-0.5.2.exe and run the default configuration (just click Run). Linux should boot, albeit slowly (it takes a long time to read the initrd - initial ramdisk - from the SD card). If you get a white screen which stays white for a long time you might as well reboot and try again. If you get a screen with a penguin with a hat on you're in. Plug in the USB cable if you haven't done that yet. You'll be staring at a login: prompt with no obvious means to type anything anywhere... that is because this Linux distribution is made for the Wizard instead of the Prophet, and the Wizard *does* have a keyboard. For now you'll have to resort to telnet to login and get things going. The phone is now listening on the cdc_ethernet interface (over the USB connection) on IP 10.100.0.1 so you'll want to configure the PC-side of the connection to something within that network range - 10.100.0.2 seems a logical choice. Configure the PC-side of the connection with IP 10.100.0.2 (ifconfig usb0 10.100.0.2 up on Linux, many many mouseclicks in the network manager on Windows). Once you have the network configured you can login with *telnet* (NOT ssh as mentioned on the linwizard site, the gizard tarball only has an active telnet daemon!), username is root, there is no password.
Once logged in use 'startx' to get the GPE shell running. It will complain about not being able to find a keyboard. The 'X' cursor appears, follwed shortly by the butt-ugly GPE interface. Once in the shell you can add a keyboard to the taskbar (tap-and-hold, choose add->input manager). There's more stuff to add, like a terminal (always handy) etc. Wifi does not work yet, GSM does not work yet, you just got yourself an iPaq...
If you're looking for eye-candy this is not it - yet. But as it is Linux, and free, and open, it can become anything you want it to...r
Am still getting error when trying to connect to my prophet useing usb is there anyway anything I need windows cant find the drivers is there a site I can download one from that supports my HTC prophet? And I tryed to connect to it but no luck I change my ip address to 10.0.0.2 255.0.0.0 and tryed to telnet to 10.0.0.1 but nothing, is there anyway to ping the device to see if it's up and running am upset, you sure there is no way to use it without having to login as root? This is giving me stress but al keep trying but am sure am missing somthing but what is it do you know? BTW I used the Drivers from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385129&highlight=linwizard&page=4
hope thats works for the prophet if not can you please help me find a driver for my prophet thanks again and good work
Sorry I got it to work I made a mistake its ip address 10.100.0.2 255.255.0.0 telnet 10.100.0.1 it works I even uploaded some pictures of it enjoy
I used a Nokia 3595 to take the pictures
just more pictures
Just a more pictures I love it I wish we can use it as a phone
They were taken with the Iphone
if Linux works on the HTC prophet then the Google operating system andriod must work to right? If so any information about it being ported to run on our phones?
hi all, i'm trying to make linux booting, but as just i start the haret and press run to execute the default.txt, it tell me :
kernel syncing panic.... and reboot after 30 seconds
any suggestion? i'm using vista 64bit and a qtek s200 wm6.1
Well am not to sure about this but al try to help Now tell me first did the linux boot on your ppc? to the screen were its asking for username? if so its ok if Not and it resets your mobile then something is wrong tell me what does it say and to tell net to it first you need the drivers did you get it? if not al post a link to download it ok I never had that problem before try running it on your SD card did you download all the files needed? I just updated my prophet rom so al try it my self it could be a firmware problem al try my best to help you ok
umh i havent installed any driver on my pc...... on the profhet, all i do was extracting files and run harted 0.5.2 .... and then press run. shell start, but then i got this error, i think it's more a pc-phone related problem..... i'll try do some other test
PS: telnet or ssh doesnt work
when i had BA phone, i was able to install linux on it, but i had just to start harted and all was working then.
Well it could be a ROM issue try to close unused programs it might help were is the files located? in the main memory or storage card? Anyway keep trying I don't understand much the drivers I posted a link for it already read my older replys ok And try a different ROM becouse am not getting this problem on mines
is it already found how to call with linux?
that is fantastic, I will refresh my Xda neo

Linux and PDA

Hi,
after long time without a PDA i bought me a Vodafone Compact IV. It's a great Pocket PC, since it store the timezone and date i entered when shutting down . But i really don't want to use WM anymore. It runs WM 6.1 original.
How do i get into the Flashing things? Where on the WIki are some instructions for it? When i had my wizard i had to know if it is G3 or G4, i had to read some stuff like ISPL or something. But where is a beginnerfriendly tutorial? Then the next is, how do i get Linux working on the device? I know about a tool to dualboot WM/Android. And i also found threads which explain how to run Android from SD card. At first i have to know how to start. That's why i need to know about the flashing.
Is there a bootable Linux image? It's okay for me, to delete the WM Partition, but is this possible? Is there anyone working on?
Might it be a problem that i am on Linux with my Desktop PC? :-/. I could use OSX too, but i don't want to get back to windows.
I hope there are some out, who know my situation. Please excuse my imperfect english
edit: it actually doesn't need to be Android. I would be happy about a working Linux system with package manager. There doesn't need to be X11 and the stuff. But, of course, a Desktop environment would be great
edit2: okay i got a HardSPL'ed device know i am flahsing with SD-card. Thats very nice. Is there a Linux Image out there, which i cann install via SD-card and that runs instead of WM????
