Sandisk WiFi - AP Browser tab not showing - Networking

I just got my Sandisk wifi card, installed the newest driver from their site and away it went. The problem is that the AP browser tab doesn't show. If you tap on the wifi icon at the bottom of the screen that option is greyed out. Any ideas on how to get it to be "available"?
BTW I had some difficulty getting WEP to work with me SMC Barricade 2804WBR and eventually manually entered the key on my i-mate and the Barricade. Works perfectly now!
Kind regards
Alan

are you using the Sandisk card with the Socket driver?
Kind regards
Alan

Well I installed the Socket driver and it worked perfectly paricularly when turning my XDA on and off. It reconnects beautifully not like the Sandisk driver which often required a soft reset!!
Thanks for the advice.
Kind regards
Alan

Hi Alan
So did you uninstall your SanDisk driver first, before loading up the Socket driver, or did you leave them both running? I'm trying to get my SanDisk WiFi + 256M to work (at least the WiFi part, if not the memory) but am getting nowhere...
Thanks for any thoughts you might have...

SanDislk Wi-Fi
HI!
I've been using my Wi-Fi card for a few months, but results are so poor, I'm about to quit: XDA-II Hangs, access points not showing, "no card present", etc.
I've got to a point where I'm thinking my card is not working properly, but there is no pattern in this behaviour, only increasing difficulties for Connecting, so I'm a bit unsure about asking the Technical service.
Any way to check the card? Or any help about it?

I did uninstall and do a soft reset. When I installed the Socket driver it worked straight off.
Good Luck
Alan

SandDisk SD wifi card and WM2003se

I got a SandDisk SD wifi with no memory that I use with my I-mate, or let me say I used to use , I've upgraded yesterday to wm2003se and installed the latest driver availble on sandisk website (Oct 03) and till now I couldn't connect to the access point...
Any help is apreciated.

anyone please ??
RE
Hi!
Is I-Mate the equivalent of O2 XDA II? If yes, then I might have the answer
I was also having problem with my SANDISK SDIO WiFI card and my O2 XDA II with WM2003SE all these while since the upgrade until JUST NOW.
By a stroke of luck I manage to coneect it to my home DLINK router.
Go to START -> SETTINGS -> CONNECTIONS ->NETWORK CARDS -> NETWORK ADAPTERS -> Change the 'My network card connects to :' WORK (not internet)
Use cable to activesync your PPC to your Desktop PC making sure that the connection is there. Insert your WiFi card and see whether it connects. If not, de-active activesync, take out your PPC and soft reset with the WiFi card in place. Put it back into your cradle and allow activesync to proceed and see whether your card connects.
See whether this procedure works
thanks for your reply,
I tried what you have suggested with no luck :?
My network card tries to associate with no success
thanks anyway
RE
ArcticCat,
Sorry to mention. I was also playing around with this freeware, Hitchhiker, then and was connected. After which I deleted Hitchhiker.
Here,

Try connecting via Hitchhiker and see whther it connects. Make sure you follow my previous procedure too.
thanks again for you reply but no success either
let me ask some question
1) You have a SandDisk SD I/O Wifi with no memory ??
2) what drivers are u using for it?
3) you have wm2003se installed
4) what was the problem before?
I am seeing the AP but cannot associate to it.... same thing with you?

Answers
1) I'm using SANDISK SDIO WiFi card without memory
2) I'm using SOCKET WLAN Tools Mobile Edition v2.01. Get it from Socket Communications
3) Yes, I've WM2003SE installed on my O2 XDA II
4) Same problem like yours, previously for a long time till last night. Can associate but cannot connect.
I'm using ActiveSync v3.8
I suggest you just play around with Hitchhiker and my procedure for a while. Reset and disconnect/connect activesync if you require. FI, Hitchhiker cannot connect too in my case.
Good luck
Now we have the same configuration with the only difference that I am still not able to connect :?
I didn't quite understood what do u want me to do with ActiveSync
thanks once more
RE
ArcticCat,
Did you get your SDIO WiFi driver here:-

Yes I did... NO luck today neither
RE
If you're able to get a copy of the new Socket WiFi Companion which is not released on its website yet you can give a try.
were u able to get it?? if yes can you tell me where from ?
thanks

Cheers Joe,
Been thinking of one of these for a while for when travelling and that price its a must. Already on it way thanks and thanks also for the instructions and suggestions,
M.
yep.. ordered one for my to-be phone!
waiting for both my s110 and the el-cheapo sd wifi to arrive next week =)
started reading for software reviews aswell...
what drivers do you recommend using with this sd wifi card?
Drivers
Hi,
This was against the first reviewer on eBuyer for the WIFI card, think it will help. Now to look into this extended ROM hack!!!!
M.
The phone runs \"Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition\", and the card worked straight out of the box once drivers installed. However, \"worked\" is a difficult issue. The card did exactly what it\'s supposed to. BTW - the drivers include a tool to scan the local area for wifi, so it\'ll be useful for finding open connections in coffee shops etc, no other tools needed. Shows signal strength, WEP, data rate etc, most of what you\'ll need.
As I said, the card does what it says on the tin, found an open network and connected to it no problem. However, setting up the Pocket PC to use the connections can be tricky, so have a look at this site http://wifi.aximsite.com/wifi_net.html
Basically, you have to use your \"Work\" connection, and tell the PPC not to use proxies. After some trial and eror, got it all working perfectly, although I blame Microsoft, not the card for the difficulties in figuring out the Networking Settings.
Next ActiveSync: follow this page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_september24.mspx
Basically, in your \"network card\" settings, choose wlan adaptor, and then \"Name servers\" tab, and in WINS enter the IP address of your host (desktop) computer that you want to sync with. Ensure you have ethernet syncing enabled on the desktop, and then open activesync on the PPC to sync through the air
If you have a Magician, I recommend doing the \"extended ROM\" hack to give yourself 27mb of \"storage\", and stick all your browser goodies in there so that you can remove your storage card and still have access to programs installed.
Cheap Wifi Card mini-review
Just to comment on latts post, I honestly do nothing but leave defaults on for browsing (connect using Work Network being the only change). I have never had to alter anything for network Activesync in terms of nameservers etc, just ticked the box on the A/sync page.
My mini review:
Activesync over Wifi is much more reliable than Bluetooth, 100% reliability so far
Wifi connection attempts to take place as soon as the card is inserted, I have to manually choose my home network, but the WiFi utility is easy to use and accesses my protected network (SSID hidden, MAC access control & WEP encryption) without any dramas.
The card is quite small, jutting out about 10mm, which isn't as bad as it sounds (remembering my Palmone card!). Power drain is not nearly as bad as I expected either.
Overall, a bargain card that *just works*. Recommended.
Joe
latts - that's my review
I also use blutetooth network - cheaper at £6, but not as fast. But works well enough. But wifi browsing is great on the street!
V
Good one Vijay, hope you didn't think I was taking your glory.
It works
Hi,
Received the WIFI card last week but just picked it up this weekend. Very small (only about 5mm sticking out of the top) and very easy to use.
I installed the driver, the utility (as per instructions) stuck the card in and it worked, brilliant.
Going to try Skype out tonight but mail etc. works a dream.
If only everything in life was as easy,
Thx,
M.
Internet as apposed to Work connection
Hi,
Just one question for you lads, you mention that when you use the WIFI card you should connect through the WORK connection, why is that?
It seems when I connected mine I either - or it automatically - selected the Internet connection rather than the work connection. It works fine for downloading mail and internet however I noticed a few voice problems on Skype which I am putting down at the moment to Skype version 1.1.066
Anyway, just wondered why Work. I have two connections set-up on my QTEK:
1. Internet - for mail and surfing
2. Work - For MMS
If I use the internet connection - as I am - for WIFI then While the card is in I am still free to use the MMS connection which I don't suppose I could use via WIFI, correct?
Any help or answers to these questions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
M.
Any other place I can get this card for a reasonable price that does ship internationally?
I need it shipped to Holland.
Re: Internet as apposed to Work connection
Hi Latts,
I've just read your posting about your wifi card and using skype with it. I've got a SPV M500 and am also thinking of getting this Wifi card. The main reason for this is that the Bluetooth just doesn't have the bandwidth for Skype or the open standatd VoIP SIP. I've been waiting for a positive Skype of Softphone SIP test before buying this wifi card though. I was wondering what skype problems you where experiencing. I can then compare them to my USB and bluetooth Skype experiences (well i'll have to try it again to compare) and see if its a software bug or a bandwidth issue.
In case you need it, i'm sending you the X-Tem softphone (SIP). I case you've not heard of SIP, its an open standard VoIP but has higher compression so i hear, so may be better for our phone / PDAs.
Thanks again for your posting. Very useful
Neil

WLan throughput with Spectec drivers

Hi!
I've recently bought this amazing small WLan-adapter from Spectec and installed it on my Magician (O2 XDA mini; ROM 1.12.01, German; Radio 1.13.00). This was quite difficult because Spectec's current drivers use a hardcoded installation path for its WLan-Utility (app was copied to \Windows\Start Menu\programs instead of the localized version).
Anyway, I've managed this issue and my Magician successfully connects to my APs now and I'm also able to browse my network shares with Resco's FileExplorer. Of course, one of the first things I've tried was to play some movies which were located somewhere in my network with TCPMP and I soon realized that the network bandwidth is horrible slow!
To test the effective throughput, I've copied a large file from a network drive to my Magician's internal storage (again, using the SMB-protocol in FileExplorer) and found out, that I'm only able to transfer about 70 kilobytes per second!
Yes, I know that those small SDIO-cards can't be compared to fullblown PCI-cards but I really guessed, the bandwidth should be at least 300 kilobytes per second. Spectec includes a test chart in their user manual which also shows RX rates between 2.4 and 2.8 Mbits/sec ... but for me, it's as low as 0.5
Am I doing something wrong here? I'm getting neither Tx errors nor Rx CRC errors, the signal strength is about 50% and the link quality ranges between 95% and 99%. Status monitor shows me an 11 Mbps TX rate and my Magician is the only wireless-station connected to the AP.
I've tried two different APs, both allowing .11b and .11g clients. The only problem I could imagine is that I've used WPA-PSK rather than WEP on both APs ... but I've always thought that encryption wouldn't affect performance
Any ideas?
.ox
Believe me, encryption is a heavy task for a processor like the s100's bullverde.
You should get higher rates without it. But I don't know if they will be near 300.
You should give it a try.
Thanks for your answer!
Okay, I thought, encryption would be done entirely within the interface itself.
Do you think, WEP128 is easier to handle than WPA-PSK (with TKIP)?
.ox
Not sure if this will help but I'm using a modified Wi-Fi Driver for the E300 Wi-Fi card.
I tested the transfer rate, see the attached image.
ampda,
Could you post link or files of this E300 cracked driver.

Here you go 1 x Modified E300 driver to use with the SPECTEC Wi-Fi card & 1 x Wi-Fi Companion.

Do you have some more experience with Spectec card, like I have problem that can’t properly to install this card on my Magician. Before it has worked so well, but after Wisbar Advance 2 installation it stopped operate. I has tried hard reset and different ROM’s installations but unsuccessfully, WLAN tool by Spectec do not starts and Wi-Fi cards do not works (on other devices it works well).
Once before I had same problem after vBar installation on my Magician and hard resets and reinstalled ROM’s do not helped, but after installation of Socketcom Wi-Fi tool my Spectec wi-fi waked up and has operated till Wisbar Advance 2 installation.
May be there could be solution with some registry tweaks or else :?:

No I haven't had experience with SPECTEC and Wisbar or vBar. I haven't had any issues with the above E300 driver installed on mine and my wifes Magician (xda Mini)
You don't need to install Wi-Fi Companion for the E300 driver to work, you can just install the Mod'd E300 Wi-Fi driver.
There are registry hacks that need to be done if you have already install the standard SPECTEC drivers which are here (There were in German so the translation may be out). I did a hard reset and install the E300 driver from scratch.
Registry Mods to uninstall factory SPECTEC drivers
1.) Remove the SPECTEC Wi-Fi Card
2.) Soft Reset
3.) Uninstall the SPECTEC drivers via the standard "Remove Programs". You might have to deleted the following files by hand:
\Windows\WLAN11b.dll
\Windows\nuiodll.dll
\Windows\PCANDIS4.dll
\Windows\langSC.dll
\Windows\Start Menu\programs\WLAN.exe
The following registration keys need to be deleted:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Cu stom\MANF-02FE-CARDID-2128-FUNC-1"
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apps\Spectec SDIO WLAN-11b Card"
4.) Soft Reset
Done
Let me know if it works
great stuff ampda, i've installed those and they're working great. 8)
I've also tried the E300 drivers a few days ago using the registry hack ampda described. In fact, the driver and the supplied utility are much better than the Spectec ones but I've encountered two serious problems:
- The nice looking GUI sometimes indicated 0% signal strength when there should be at least 30% available (as stated in the site survey).
- GUI is sometimes asking for a key/serial when you try to open the WLan-Companion
@ampda:
Your screenshot shows an effective bandwidth of 33kbps? Wow, that would mean your throughput is even worse than mine using the original spectec drivers ...
.ox
Greets,
I think there is 32KBps (notice the uppercase B), so that means 256kbps.
... sorry, my fault
But even 256kbps would be very slow compared to my initial tests (~560kbps). I'm still confused on how Spectec managed it to achieve transfer rates greater than 2MBit/s with every tested AP :?
I'm going to test several driver/AP/encryption combinations. Does anyone know a good network benchmark application for WM2003?
.ox
The results you are getting are about the same as I get (using WPA-PSK) so I don't think there is anything you are doing wrong.
However, belief it or not, the SPECTEC is still FAR superior to the SANDISK 256 + WIFi. With that card I was only able to get a througput of about 300 kbit/s (32 KB/s). With the SPECTEC I get about 2.5 times that.
Testing the Sandisk, my conclusion was that the SD Bus of the Magician is seriously lacking in throughput. There is an interesting story on Tom's Hardware about exactly this problem.
Just tried your modded drivers ampda. Thanks for the hack! Works great. For those testing the performance, make sure not to have the stats graph running as that greatly influences throughput. I justed tested throughput using a website and I got 85KB/s with these drivers. About the same as with the original Spectecs.
Also, these drivers interfere with Hitchhiker, Wifigraph and Wififofum so if you can't do without those, use the original Spectec drivers.
But the Wi-fi companion should be more than adequate in most circumstances so I can certainly live without those utilities!
Once more, thanks ampda!

Thanks for your comparison! So it looks like I have to be quite happy owning this Spectec-card instead of SanDisk's
I've just switched to WEP128 in order to see if it would make a difference ... but it didn't. Throughput stays around 70-80 kilobytes/sec while copying a large file from a network share to my Magician's internal storage (yes, I know that the process of writing data to the flash memory also affects performance).
So it seems that everybody here's quite happy with SocketCom's driver. Are they really stable? As I said before, I've seen some strange problems about the wrong signal strength indicator and the WLan-Companion asking me for a serialnumber ...
.ox
Well as I said earlier I used both the SPECTEC drive and the E300 driver and both worked with no problems.
I like to try just about anything at least once.
I also use Wififofum and no issues arisen. The data rate I posted was copying 5 jpg images from my wireless LAN to the /Storage on my xda.
I'm going to test both drivers like this,
1. Hard Reset
2. Install SPECTEC drivers only
3. Remove encryption from my network (Hope no ones watching)
4. Copy 1 large file say 5 MB
5. Time the copy process only as someone mentioned that running measurement graphs might musk the results.
6. Copy the file again monitoring with the SPECTEC tools (Can't remember if it has any.
7. Do the same again with the E300 driver and Wi-Fi Companion.
As you can see I like to try and kill my Mini doing useless tests and trials, (but that’s why we use these forums, to play)
Please excuse, but i'm not that technical....i have the spectec card, and had the spectec drivers installed.
I downloaded the drivers from this thread, and uninstaled my spectec drivers.
Soft resetted and installed the drivers supplied here. Soft resetted again, and all seemed well. The Wi-Fi companion was working ok, and i was able to connect to my LAN.
I didn't however, do the registry things also posted here. Do i HAVE to perform that to totally remove the spectec drivers ?
Sorry for the question, my knowledge is dwarfed on this forum.
:?
Here are the results of the test I did
Testing Hardware
WLAN Hardware = D-Link 614+ 22Mb
PDA Hardware = O2 xda II Mini ROM 1.11.00 (Big-Storage)
File Copied = 5,126 KB MP3 File
Application used to copy File = Resco Explorer 2005 V5.20 installed on Big Storage
Wi-Fi Card = SDIO SD SPECTEC 802.11b Wi-Fi Card
Drivers Used =
a) Factory SPECTEC Driver and WLAN app V1.25
b) Modified E300 Wi-Fi Card Driver
SPECTEC Driver Results:-
1. Hard Reset
2. Turned off my Wireless Encryption.
3. Installed SPECTEC Wi-Fi Driver into RAM. The standard driver proved difficult to connect to my network, it took several attempts.
4. Installed Resco Explorer
5. Run “My Network” from within Resco. Again this took some doing for Resco to see my shared drives on my network
6. Selected my MP3 File and copied to “My Documents” on RAM
7. I timed 4 copies from PC to PDA, to copy the 5,129Kb MP3 took 40, 41, 40, 40 sec’s each.
8. The SPECTEC WLAN app reported the following states,
An average RX transfer rate of 1195 kbps.
Signal Strengths of 79%
Quality of 98%
E300 Driver Results:-
1. Hard Reset
2. Installed Modified E300 Wi-Fi Driver into RAM. This connected immediately to my network
3. Installed Resco Explorer
5. Run “My Network” from within Resco. This also connected immediately to my shared network.
6. Selected my MP3 File and copied to “My Documents” on RAM
7. I timed 4 copies from PC to PDA, to copy the 5,129Kb MP3 took 40, 40, 39 ,39 sec’s each.
8. Installed the associated Wi-Fi Companion Software into RAM. (tested download after install and still was 40 sec’s
9. Wi-Fi Companion reported the following states,
Average RX transfer rate of 35,792 Bps.
Signal Strengths of 55%
Quality 100%
Notes
Now you can argue the findings for and against to both apps but these are my thoughts.
1. The E300 Driver seems to connect and configure better.
2. Install size of SPECTEC Drivers was ST=4.99, RAM=8.54
3. Install size of E300 Driver only was ST=4.99, RAM=8.36
4. Install size of both E300 Driver and Wi-Fi Companion was ST=4.99, RAM=8.68. (Im guessing you could install Wi-Fi Companion into Storage)
5. Wi-Fi Companion has better Wi-Fi Tools (yes I know this is a 3rd party app)
6. SPECTEC Wi-Fi Tools have a lot to be desired.

Well it looks like you have just proven that you don't have to do the registry changes. As I said I installed after a hard reset. The only thing I can thik of is that there might be some registry settings floating around that would just take up a small amount of room.
Nice job 8)
So it seems that both drivers show an almost identical transfer rate. Regardless of the curious results showed by the Wi-Fi Companion app (which should also be around 1.025 kilobits/sec).
I'm still curious about how encryption seems to affect performance. In a similar test environment (with WEP enabled), I'm only able to transfer files half as fast as you.
.ox
I should of tested that as well, I'll do it now.

Hi all.
Just received my spectec SDIO Wifi card to my Gene but I can't get it working!!
The spectec utility doesn't seem to like WM 2005 and it doesn't work.
Someone had the same problem?
Without this utility, is it possible to connect to a wlan??
HELPPPPPP!!!!

Stay alife ?
Hi ,
I got HTC P3400 ( Gene ) upgraded to WM6 .. and I got the spected wifi card and work great in normal cases ..
I got this wifi card just to use SIP ( voip ) apps with my gene and it work little fine with fring ( hope to find something better )
BUT when my device lock ( turn screen to blank ) it CLOSE the wifi connection so I get DC from the sip server .. and if I canceled the turn off device feature it eat the battery ( I think so )
so I wonder if there a way that I make the gene keep wifi up all time even while the device is locked ?? ( do not know if it is stupid question coz it is so easy to be done or noway to be done .. I just hope someone could help me in that )
some help with fring
Hi willyhopa,
I aquire the sd wifi card to use with my p3400 and I can´t work with fring, they can´t find the wifi connection. Do you have the same problem?
How you setup your fring to use wifi connections?
Best regards.
After much brain hammering I finally got WIFI LAN to work on my HTC p3400 (OLD GENE).
You will need:
1. A WLAN SDIO card ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital )
2. A driver for that wlan SDIO card
The card I have has no brand information, so I used the FCC ID : S2Y - SDIOWLAN - 11B...
Searches came up with this driver, turns out the card is SPECTEC.
Install the driver (whichever it may be) on your GENE, try to get WM CommManager if you don't have one.
Get a nice decent web browser
...and you're off!!!

hmm seems it is working but i dont have gene will wait for others reply

Hey, try changing simcard and then replacing it back. This will reset your network settings and the IE will work again.

I don't think you'll find them in any shops...
Try looking in your normal MOBILE SHOPPEE type places....
IF you cannot find anything in shops, then try this link:
