Accessing files on my host pc - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi all,
I am trying to access files on my pc whilst connected through active sync on my pocket pc (win03) I want to be able to view and play media files with any app. I have been completely baffled as I cannot find a way to access files on PC no matter what I have tried. It appears one would have to purchase a Network (wireless) card to be able to see shared docs.
Does anyone know of anything that may gain me access to files without getting a wireless card
Thanks very much

you could try and read this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=10730

Thanks very much for the link. I did have a little look aroundbefore I posted and I did find options for a bluetooth connection.
I was really after a way to do this through active sync without any netowrking sotware or drivers. When I am at work I use a USB cable to sync and I wouldnt mind being able to access files on my main PC.(movies for beta player)
Thanks again for your reply.

HELP GUYS

Hi forum,
I have a WiFi Connection in my office premisis & was womdering if I could create a VPN or a similar p2p connection between my laptop & my universal...
Any comments or ideas..
Thanx,
mOrph
yes you can
but not an activesync connection.
you basically have to get on the WIFI network (VPN not necessary unless you are external of the network and/or behind firewalls).
then its a question of what you want to do, the WIFI network gets you on to it using WEP or WPA SPK I think (we use WEP at home and work).
if you want to connect to your laptop, create a mapped drive then you can copy and paste backwards and forwards.
you can run terminal server to control your PC or connnect to a terminal server, or connect to SBS with administrator priverlidges.
The question is, if you connected, what do you want to do. You cannot activesync, but you might like to try streaming music or other bandwidth consuming activities...
ok
got your PM.
Question: If you created the connection using WIFI between your laptop and your PDA, what do you want to do/achieve?

This is at the beginning of every forum topic.
Hi
Answer:
Hi Simon... The reason i was wanting to connect my laptop & my ppc through Wifi is that i cannot activesync (like you already know).
I was thinking maybe i can have a data trasfer between the devices if nothing else.
Is that possible?
If not, what can the connection be used for?
Thanx buddy,
mOrph
Activesync cannt be done over WIFI, 2003 allowed it not WM2005.
You can share a folder on your PC, and thus place files in and out of that using WIFI. Generally though, I found it more efficient to use an SD card with a USB memory reader to transfer files, much quicker read/write. Usually I want to put pictures or videos back the other way anyway. some pc's and laptops come with memory card readers anyway.
ON your PC' find a folder, right mouse click and share it with a share name. Make sure you know the name of the machine, eg my computers name is TLA-DELL1 for work, and home is the name of my daughter. If you havent named your machine it will have some dodgy obscure pathetic name issued by the manufacturer. You can get this from system in control panel.
On your PDA, start your WIFI.
Using Resco explorer hopefully you have it, map a net work drive. You can try the standard file explorer, but I dont like it. Total commander can also do it. In the share address use:
\\computername\foldersharename
note the double backslash.
Enter usernames and passwords as appropriate.
Now, the pain in the arse bit.... do you have a firewall? This is where it can get tricky.
The other thing you can do is if you are running XP Pro (if not, I recommend it), you can also go into control panel > system on the tab called remote connection, you can tick a box that allows you to take control and use your machine on your PDA using Terminal Server. This allows you to access all the resources and facilities that your machine has as if you were sitting at the console, including the power and processing speed of your computer.
Only downside, the screen is much much smaller than your computer, so getting around it can be painful.
Once you have enabled your machine to allow the connection, its simply a matter of starting wifi, programs > terminal services, and enter the IP address or computer name of your laptop to connect to it, and it should open then a log on name for you to start using your machine.
A further feature, which I dont use and cannot advise how to, but read about it here, is to "stream" mp3's from your laptop to your PDA so you can play music on your PDA based upon music on your machine rather than having to copy it.
In relation to sending files to your computer, if all else fails, I ahve two extra email accounts on my PDA a hotmail account, a POP3 account, and if in times of need, a GMAIL account, all of which allow me to email particular files anywhere I want using any WIFI connection. I use this when all else fails.....
Hence my question, what did you want it for....
Dont worry mate, we'll get there... one day. We just have to challenge MS, and what is life without a challenge or 100 from MS.

Q: How to browse the Wizard over Wifi network from XP PC

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it possible to browse my wifi connected Wizard (O2 mini S - latest O2 ROM) from my PC...
Ie i would like to be able to open window to my documents on my phone on my PC to copy file etc...
Thanks in advance!
Yes, but you will need some third party software, such as Resco Explorer, to 'map' the folders you want to access across the network.
Thanks for your quick reply, however i meant if/how is it possible to browse the files on the wizard from the PC over wifi network, not the other way around.
Cheers
lo thought i would try helping.
if you downgrade your active sync on your pc 2 or 3 releases it supports syncing via wifi.... the newer ones it was disabled on for some daft reason.
it may be enabled on the new beta version i dunno.
anyway if your pc was synced to it you certainly can view the my documents folder. also by bluetooth in any version of active sync, just need a bluetooth dongle for ur comp.
hopw that helps
I don't think you can downgrade with WM5, I believe that you need Active Sync 4.1 and above.
I can't think of a way to browse the PPC on a wireless network which is a good thing for security.
hi, have you tried pocket controller? you can control your ppc from the pc via wifi.

Connect to PC without active sync

Are there any apps that put the phone into like a media storage mode so I can connect to a computer without active sync and still be able to add files to the sd card inside?
I need the same thing. I'm using WM6.

Hi,
Not 100% sure I understand what your trying to do?
I think your trying to move files to and from your SD Card without using activesync?
If so: You have many options.....
~Bluetooth Explorer - It's like having a Shared folder, where you can pull only the needed files you want to keep and copy / paste them anywhere on your WM6 device.
~SD Card Reader - Via Stand alone or a printer to move files back and forth
~Bluetooth FTP - (My Favorite) Move Files and Folders - To & From (PC & PDA)
~WIFI - Depending on your network setup
~Internet Sharing - Via Bluetooth or USB (May need to look at your network setup & security)
~Remote Desktop - Via Bluetooth or USB (Security & Network settings may need to be changed)
Hope this helps!

I'm using Resco Explorer 2007 which allows me to, via wifi, connect to 2 of the computers within my private network. Set up a folder dedicated for PPC files and mapped a network drive to it on my 8525.
I have not been able to connect via wifi to my windows server 2003 machine though.
You want the wm5torage application - it will allow you to put your WM5 or WM6 device into a mode that makes it act as a Mass Storage Device.
The only caveat is that it needs to lock the SD card before putting the device in Mass Storage Mode, so you must install any applications that run constantly (i.e. programs that have Today screen plugins, like Skype) into the device and not on the SD card, or it won't work.
The latest version I know of (that I use) is version 1.73, but there is apparently a version 1.75 at http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1543.

I have this program, but I *constantly* get CRC errors when transferring a couple of files..its so bad that the app basically doesn't work when transferring more than a couple of megs of data.
Anyone else see this?

Music / Video Sync

Hey guys, I have a question to ask.
Is there any apps that allow us to browse music / video or any other files from pc and copy or sync them through wifi? For example:
I'm staying downstairs and my pc is upstairs, so kind of lazy to go upstairs to sync my music. So I just use the app, connect wifi and browse the files on my pc from my phone and copy them to my phone.
Any recommendations appreciated. Thanx!
Homepipe might do this for you.
I tried Homepipe, it's a cool software, but it's not exactly what i want. From what i understand, this software is using cloud method. Means that if i want to copy something from my pc to my phone, it will get the file from my pc, go through their server and download to my phone. That'll take a lot of time. I tried to download a song from my pc, and it took ages to finished. And if i use this software, i will reveal my drive widely to the net. It's not something that i would like. What i really need is an app that connects to my pc through the same network only.

wifi sync hack or app?

Is there an app that I can use to connect to my computer and do file transfers wirelessly? Or perhaps a hack..
What exactly are you trying to transfer? I use DropBox all the time and you can share files with other devices/people as well, follow that link for extra storage.
Ive also used a comp w/ bluetooth to transfer a bunch of pictures to my Atrix one time..
If your wanting to sync your entire iTunes library, you might give this a try: http://goo.gl/hVxxf
I use ES File Explorer, free in the market. It acts as a file explorer on your atrix, but can also set up LAN locations via ip addresses. With that you can easily copy files from your phone to computer and vice versa as long as both are on the same network.
Just hate having to take my sd card out all the time or moving my charger around. Just transfering music, videos and pics.
Apps Drawer > Phone Portal > Connect with Wifi
In your browser, connect to your phone by typing in your phones IP address followed by :8080 and you will connect to the phone portal which will allow you to manage your phone wirelessly.
Use IE 7 or Firefox 3 if possible as they are the most compatible with the software.

Quite welcome. You can also do this while plugged into USB if you are low on battery or whatever else.
Ever since the .83 update I have horrible signal in my house. I typically just leave my phone in another room lately where I get decent signal and use the BT headset for calls and then use my desktop or laptop for txting.
I have been using PhoneExplorer.. its free from the market. It will sync Outlook if you need that, it lets you run your texts in chat windows, and it syncs files and pictures as well as lets you upload and download to the phone. It supports wifi, bluetooth, and usb connections.
When I tried PhonePortal, I couldn't get to my files... I might have to try it again.
