Imate : connecting to the internet - Networking

Hey all,
My friend got a Communicator 9210i , and yesterday he dialed the isp and started surfing the internet, i tried doing that with my imate using a cellualr line to dial a landline ISP and use dial up to surf the net but it didnt work, so iam wondering if it is even supported in Imate.
Please reply
GPRS is slow/expensive in my country
thanks in advance

Your provider has to support that, and it has to be provisioned on your account. It's called CSD, and is typically billed as a standard phone call. You will get 9600bps data speed over it. The device will do it.

thanks 4 ur fast reply, but the case is iam using the same ISP as my friends with the 9210i , so is it possible that the 9210 works and PPC doesnt work? like i dont know if 9210 uses the same interface CSD lines. but here whats iam getting while dailing the number , No modem found @ this number.
thanks again
i need to connection from my imate to ssh my server when i need to : )

CSD has to be enabled by your CELLULAR carrier, not the ISP. The error you gave is exactly what happens when CSD is off at the carrier.

10x
ok , will contact the company and ask them if it is supported or if i need to pay anything to make it work .

How to change the default +0 GPRS!...

I 'm experimenting problems to setup a GPRS connection with my local cellualr provider, because it seems that here in MEXICO, you need to configure +52 55 *99# intead of +0..... (tmobile default configuration) I own a TMOBILE XDA PW10B1 ROM: 3.08.10 ENG, Radio Version: 6.02
Can anybody help me to do this configuration?
Sounds like your GPRS operator needs to go on a course
A GPRS handset doesn't actually dial a number. The *99# is used as a code to tell the phone to connect to GPRS it is not sent to the network.
There are actually 3 ways for a GPRS phone to connect to a GPRS network
ATD*99# (or ATD*99***1# on some handsets)
AT+CGACT=1
AT+CGDATA=1
The last two don't work in practice as once you are connected you need a PPP link to do anything useful.
You do need to tell the phone what Access Point you wish to connect to (the bit after the +0~ on the display, which can be removed by tweaking the Dialing Locations section). This is done by the AT+CGDCONT command, but as all AT commands are 'hidden' by Pocket PC the Connection Manager sets this before it connects.
The customer care person in Mexico simply doesn't understand how GPRS works. Unfortunatly few customer care staff do elsewhere in the world either.
Thanks for your replay.
how can I tweak the Dialing Locations section?
I'm new in this kind of tech.
Start\Settings\Connections\Connections\Dialing Locations\Dialing Patterns
Replace everything (or just International Calls) with g.
Mind you it will make no diference to the GPRS operation of the device, only the display of the "dial string" in the message window.
I works!!!! very well. It fells a litte bit slow, but it works... Thanks.
Is that possible to somehow see what AT commands have been used by the connection manager/pocketpc?
I have GPRS working on pocketpc, but I couldn't get it working using AT commands magic and with pppd (under linux, not on the XDA, but the same SIM/network.).

Blackberry APN Vodafone...

Please help...
I have a xda2 running on a corporate Bes server everything on Mail side works perfectly only problem i have is getting internet access to work through the hidden apn on the blackberry service.
I have looked though all the posts and not found much about this..
My question is ... do vodafone (uk) have a proxy server address or is this a problem with my sim (gprs) ?
I can use the standrd Apn from vodafone which works but drops my blackberry service when it connects.... so if you want to browse the web you will lose your email until you stop browsing and stop start BB service... Any ideas ?
Rom Version : 2.02.t1WWE
Radio version : 1.18.00
Thanks guys !... Really impressed with this wicked forum...
We have over 300 standard blackberrys and 1 xda2 I need to show them the xda is the future ...
Any consolation that it does the same for O2
It is set up so that if you connect to the internet, it drops BB until the internet connection is released. You have a BB APN & an (ISP) Internet APN.
Are you running BES4 yet? I heard that it was going to be better for XDA2 but haven't seemed to get any benefits yet
Blackberry Client
BaZzA,
We have just started with Blackberry and users are being supplied with the Blackberry 7100 . I have an XDA 2 on Vodafone IRl and have been trying to set it up but the only client software I can find for it is the T-Mobile I found a link to on this forum . I've checked the Vodafone.ie web site but they don't seem to like XDA for some reason .Any idea where I might find a client that doesn't have German settings ????
Thanks ...
HW
Both the client and the application i used ...
you will need to get your vodafone sim enabled for use on the blackberry.net APN.... does work fine ... until i tried a new sim cant seem to unlock my Pin code from my bes server...now
But does work very well..
Oh ... Puff The Magic Wagon!
not running Bes 4.0 yet will do very soon .
Baz
Tks
Thanks BaZza,
I'll give it a go with an enabled SIM tomorrow..

T End Of free access to o2

team
I have a XDA11i and ruin it on a P A G sim o2.
I can at a real high cost surf the net using GPRS Cellular line at 2.35 per meg !!!
I could also get on line free as cellular line , dial no 07712927927 , o2wap, password, ip 103,113,200.200 . ( very slow though )
But now each time I try to connect to the non GPRS connection I get the " no modem " box , despite the fact that if you dial the line on a normal phone it seems clear there still is ?
Any thoughts ???
Astro1
Maybe O2 realised their configuration mistake at their end, and just closed off the username's access?
Older O2 payg sims had 300minutes of WAP dialup on them free each month.
I expect this is what you have, I used to use the same thing.
I often got the no modem response, its crappy o2 networks. If you try again in a couple days it may work again!
You can upgrade to 1meg GPRS for free a month instead of 300minutes, but to be honest, i think the 300minutes are worth more!
As far as I know the dialup number, username and password are all correct, but maybe the IP isnt. Try going back to server assigned ip.

I don't think that phone can work on 3 network. I think it is of an complete different 'frequency'. Can you make/receive phone calls using the 3 sim?
yes, calls work etc not tried a video call as yet but i know lots of fones dont work at all with the 3 sim but the exec does
Same here

You can input all the settings, but I can't seem to be able to access the 3 portal.
In settings, connections tab, connections
advanced tab, select networks
new, and input the relevant info from here:
Data accounts: Create one called 3 GPRS.
APN: three.co.uk
Username:
Password:
Login request: Off
Allow calls: Automatic
IP address:
DNS address:
Authentication: Normal
Data compression: Off
Header compression: Off
MMS settings can be entered via outlook menu
gateway: http://mms.um.three.co.uk:10021/mmsc
proxy: 217.171.192.2
port: 8799
(account is the 3UK avvount above)
Not sure if u need to input the Video gateway.
If anyone know how to actually open the portal, plz help,
I think the problem is that the page detects what device you are using, and an exec is not on their list.
My A1000 uses Opera so it cant be that much different...
Thanx Aristotle
3GRPS seems to work ok, considering that on EXEC it will not display any service pages still but does connect to 3.
Though the MMS settings are not working. I am not able to download my MMS messages and send either any suggestions.
Thankyou in advance
In Australia, so for we have got the Universal to connect to planet3, 3G for internet access, and video calling. We still have not managed to get it working for mms, and video streaming.

Oh that's good, is there anything special you need to do to access planet 3? because I can connect, but can't load any pages.
I guess the video streaming is to do with the hutchkey plugin(???)
Aristotle, you're in the UK, and it's all firewalled on 3, so I wouldn't get my hopes up. I know things are different in Australia (from the 3g forum).
That's why I left for t-mob: the irony is that the network that claims to be the most hi-tech is in fact the most low-tech of them all. On t-mob web and walk pro and the exec, you get full internet access (no restrictions), with infinite bandwith. That means during the day I remote-desktop to my home machine over 3G, then when I go home it switches calls to skype (I turn gprs off and wifi on), never worrrying about the bills. Try doing that on 3. :-/
lol.....well in australia we only really have one option for 3G at this stage, and thats 3.
walk into an optus store here asking about 3G, and if your lucky they know what your talking about, and at best they might be able to tell you that the broachers are coming.
Vodafone here, well not bad, but ask them anything outside what there trained to know and you might as well be talking egyptian.
telstra....lol....almost as bad as optus.....
Give us another 3 yrs....

Yeah, I know, thanks =/ it would be nice to see the F1 news and footie scores whilst on the train...
Used to be on T-mobile but it's reception was (and still is) awful where I live, drops more calls than 3.
Yep, wouldnt it be great to have a program that would have all the F1 details for the season and also sync options to get all the latest news, minute by minute race and qualifing updates....mmm....sounds very viable
sms
Hi guys,
Im also having a similar dillema to you guys.
Bought an SPV M5000 from ebay and unlocked with buzz's tool, but now using my 3 sim card I cant send any sms, or send/recieve any mms.
Im thinking I may just sell the phone on, wait until my contract expires, and get a new one on a proper contract with orange or O2 becuase im addicted to txting and its getting a bit annoying constantly swapping my sim into my A1000.
Thanx

omg
no offence, but...
universal is a 3g compatible phone - it will work with 3, vodafone 3, Australia 3, etc - it is designed to do that.
secondly - use the http://mobile.three.co.uk/hb/7600/HutchKey as access to the portal - just make it your homepage. this one is for nokia, it works with me.
re sms - check the sms centre!!! thats all you have to do - call the support and they will give you the number.
confused
sorry to seem really thick ( I probably am), but where is the setting to change sms centre number on the unversal. Ive been through all settings and cant find it. I dont remember changing this on my A1000 when I flashed it with the non 3 Uk F/W
I've been told about this 3 network not compatible with any other phones except the phones that cames together with the package. I wonder why is it so? I mean, others are trying to lock the phone, so that it can't be used with other network. But locking the network to a certain phone doesn't make any business sense.
However, I've recently had a look on my friend's 3 network phone. And it seems that the phone main screen is flashing advertisements constantly. And, as far as I know, this 3 network is the cheapest to maintain so far, that's why many seems to be using it.
So, my current conclusion is that, they need a phone that has the ability for them to flash advertisements, if not, they won't let you have the cheap network rate without the ability for them to flash advert.

Hi igs, I can access some pages on planet 3, but not others, if I try for example the link you give for nokias, I get an error message (see below, sorry for the small image, can't find the right screenshot programme)
However, I can access some pages, e.g. checking my balance (see below), by typing the link. and if I click on the links from there, I can open some pages but not others.
These are my settings
I have APN: three.co.uk
Username password and domain are blank
Use server assigned IP address in TCP/IP and Servers
And nothing checked for proxy settings
Any ideas? Could it be that you have some plugin that I don't? Thanks....
Also ai118, I didnt need to specify a sms centre, it did it automatically...

I think that might be a 6280, you can turn those 'adverts' off
