Access internet using pass through. - Networking

Now I know some of you guys are really excellent at writing step by step idiots guides.
Having consistently failed to access the internet on my XDA II using Active Sync pass through I would really appreciate a 'here's how to do it' step by step guide from anyone who knows the definitve answer.
I'm connected using USB and access the internet using a dial-up on my laptop.
I've tried various settings from many different post found through searches to no avail. Having all the steps/settings in 1 list would, I know, solve this for me and others.
I need to do this to test some sites on the XDA and I can't currently access GPRS as I'm in LA for a few weeks and it's £20/Mb!
Thanks in anticipation.

How did you go with fixing this problem?
My friend has a problem that he cannot use the pass through when connected to USB it always tries to connect using GPRS... My friend does not want to use GPRS...
Cannot seem to get it working, have made sure all his settings are the same as my XDA II (that works fine) but still no luck...

Wireless SD card connection? Help!

Hi there!
I have an Eircom broadband connection for my PC using a Netopia wireless router.
I bought a Sandisk SD Wi-Fi adaptor for my XDA and installed it's software from the little CD. (It's not the one with 256MB)
However my XDA doesn't find an access point.
I'm sorry for being such a newbie, and I did search for old posts to no avail.
Naturally I'd like to be able to use my broadband wireless to surf on my XDA II and activesync etc but I haven't a clue about 'mating' them!
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Many thanks
Conor (Ireland)
I saw an article where it was being used with pocketlan on an xda 2, also saw other articles where it works ok in that combination.
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=2825&associateid=148
Still lost!
Hi
Thanks for that!
However, I installed it but then got bamboozled again. I just didn't know what to do with it!! It doesn't link automatically - there's talk of addresses, pings and such which is all Greek to me!
Does anyone know a step by step account of linking XDA by wi-fi to a home wi-fi router?
Thanks for reading this!
Conor
Fool's guide to connecting XDA II to home Wi-Fi??
I'm still at sea on this - please forgive me putting out another call for help here.
I have the SD Sandisk adapter (not the one with 256MB storage) and I have a home wireless router for my laptop.
I installed the software but need a detailed talk-through or step-by-step guide to get my XDA II connected.
Has anyone the time, talent and inclination?
Best regards to all!
Conor

I offer to help. But you seem to want instant gratification, with no effort on your part. That's not going to work. Nor is doing everything everyone says. How many times will you post the same thread? To connect you need to do a series of steps. Little baby steps. Their can be a number of reasons why you can't connect, part of connecting is finding out what is wrong.
Not wanting to do it that way, I suggest you find someone local you can pay to stop by your home and set it up for you.

Please please show me how to set up WiFi on Exec!! i beg!!!!

Hey all,
i'm running Windows XP on my PC, got a Linksys Wifi Router (model: BEFW11S4) and i'm running my internet through it with no problems.
i can also run other computers through this router to use the net too, but i dont have a clue how to set up a network to share files or printers.
my pc is hardwired by ethernet cable to the router, and another pc is on a wifi dongle. my exec can connect to the router to use the internet, but wont connect to my pc (obviously).
How do i get started????
please, a dummy's guide would be great if anyone could help?? step by step kind of thing??? i know i'm asking a bit of a pathetic request, but hey, out of options.
any help would be much appreciated peoples!!
Pleeeeeeeease!!!!
Can't help as I have the same Problem
I have the same problem, although thus far I have not even been able to connect to the internet.
Somebody out there must be able to give us the 'idiots guide'.
This is for setting up your home network:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/
Follow the above link - it's the one I used to get started setting up my first network.
Take your time and learn the ins-n-outs of setting it up properly (User permissions, security, etc), so you make sure you share only with those you want to.
Sorry, guys, I haven't got the time to write out all the steps for u now.
To map a shared network drive, I believe the only way is to use a utility such as Resco Explorer (latest version). It's a damned handy little prog, well worth the outlay.
Good luck with it...

Internet through USB from PC

Hi All,
I have searched the forums but can't find anything on my specific issue. I used to have an XDA Orbit and if I connected it via USB I could use my PC's internet connection. Is there anyway I can do this with my shiny new G1. The reason I’m asking is I have bugger all reception at work and the Wi-Fi is located in another building, which is too far away.
Please help!
Hi,
My above post has been moved here but im not trying to connect my pc to the internet using my phone, im trying to conect my phone to the internet through my PC.
As far as I can see this post does not apply to my question, can somebody please help? I can't be the only one this applies to!
If the computer has wifi and is connected to the internet through wired network it can be done...
Is this your case?
My work PC doesn't have Wi-Fi. My home PC does though.
All I want is for my G1 to be able to use my computers internet conection via USB. My old XDA Orbit used to be able to do it via active sync.
i.e I can surf the web on my phone using USB connection as the access point
Any ideas?
As far as I know this probably will not work, but you can try reversing the port forward technique with ADB

Why would you want to surf the web through the phone when you have a PC on the other end of that wire which does the same thing, but better?

Several reasons that i can think of
1? Bad reception indoors, so i can waste time at work by downloading useless apps on my G1, and everyone thinks im working.
2? My cell provider charges me for internet bandwith usage (per kb/mb), im cheap and don't wanna pay them.
3? I'm a massochist, and enjoy using the G1's browser more than firefox(bleh!)
4? I'm running out of reasons now
All this hypothetically could be hypothetical.
Yup, im bored at work
Exactly, item 1 sums it up. I have no reception at work so if I have a data connection I can get email notifications and test out my apps. I can't believe no one else is missing this feature. On my xda I had it set up to sync with my various email accounts etc. It wouldn,t be a problem if tmobile's reception wasn't so poor!
I would assume it is possible but would have to forward ports from your computer to the phone, similar to how the thetherbot app forwards ports from the phone to the computer. But I may be wrong that could be a one way street for data.
Wow...you are a masochist As much as I like the browser on the g1 compared to other phones..I just don't see why you'd always want to use it instead of a PC
I don't want to surf the web on the G1 when right infront of me I have a PC. I simply want it to have a reliable data connection when I'm at work. As I have no signal from t bloody mobile and no wifi!
Nobody made a sync application similar to MS ActiveSync?
Why would we make something that is already built in?
ohh forget it. Your obviously not reading what i've written.

No you obviously haven't paid attention.
Why would we create something to sync our phone to our computer when it does it all OTA. On top of this how did you expect it to sync our calendar and such when it is all proprietary?
What exactly do you want "sync'd"?
And once again... I am sure you could figure it out if you read up on adb forward commands.

As my first post says I have no reception at work at all, this means I go all day without being able to sync my various email accounts etc. I would also like to be able to demo what our device can do to my collegues. unfortunately i don't understand adb or indeed know what it stands for and as I have no programming knowledge i thought I would speak with people that do.
I will try to figure it out for myself and post my findings here. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks it would be useful.
I'm also looking for some solution to use my Laptop's internet connection on my G1 via USB. The reason for this is I have a very weak neighbors wifi and only my Laptop can connect to it. I am writing android apps that need to connect to the internet.

you could set up an adhoc connection on the computer and connect to it on the g1 then bridge the networks
unfortunately my work PC does not have a Wi-Fi card so this wouldn't work. damn it whys it so complicated!?! :-(
You could just buy a router.

[Q] tethering on Three uk

Has anyone got tethering working on Three UK? Been looking for some info for some time now but it seems ppl just get some sort of errors.
I've been searching for the same answer. I setup the tethering on my Omina 7 but can't connect as I don't have the three dial up number which all the guides seem to require.

Yea,,,, the same:'(
And you have tryed used the software that comes with 3? I have used my own operator here in Sweden and that works.
hey guys, came across your thread, 3 does not support tethering on their network as they are waiting for the offical windows software to come out to do it, which i am annoyed about as i got this phone on the basis it can tether. however if you still want the number it is *99# to dial to and u do not require a username or password (worked on my blackberry 9700), I am currently downloading the verizon vzaccess software as this supposidly allows the omnia to tether so I shall see what that comes back with
Still not able to connect using this... Anybody had better luck?
do you want to use usb-tethering or internet sharing (hotspot)?

Internet Sharing works perfectly, thankfully!
