does real player really works? - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

hi
can anyone play this file with real player ppc?
http://www.radio.rai.it/live/radio1.ram
on pc, it plays
on ppc (xda/mdaII) no
why? thanks!!
official link:
http://www.realnetworks.com/industries/mobile/operators/products/player/ppc/

Its a stream from the net so it should work.. but listening to the radio via the net on your PPC would probably run up some hefty GPRS bills.
Its in .ram format, so it should work fine as long as your GPRS is connected.

thanks for your reply
the rai link provided it's only a 33kbit audio file
the following file is only 20kbit:
http://www.radio.rai.it/live/radio1.ram
when opening a ram or rm file it always tell me:
"Response or data from server timed out"
i've search a solution on this page, but without success:
http://service.real.com/help/player/realone/pocketpc/realone.html#troubleshootingyourro
thanks for any help! ;-P

I've tried many times and many links to listend and see streamed media via Real One,also with newer version.
Only 2 of 25 i've tried worked.
In fact,I don't know why they do not work.
Saluti

thank you ;-P
is your error alway the same?
thanks!
i think it depens from the pocket pc version
on real site they always write "ppc 2002)...
any other suggest?

can anyone help me please?
this page works on pc:
http://www.realnetworks.com/mobile/pocketpc/usa/entertainment_movies.html
but on my xda/mdaII not
the error is always the same:
"Response or data from server timed out"
on the official real player web site they invite customers to try their page!
http://service.real.com/test
but NO demo play with windows mobile 2003...
how it's possibile that REAL didn't try it's most famous software on the last windows mobile?
uhm...

I contacted Real about this a while ago, and they seem pretty clueless.
As you mentioned, none of their test files work, yet their response seemed to deny any problem on their end, to the effect of saying "some streams may not be compatible, contact the source of the stream".
Just plain useless if you ask me.
Now if only Radio4's listen again site did windows media (which works, er, 40% of the time)...
Incidentally, did you know Auntie Beeb is planning on a video service for their TV programmes? High quality 320x240 optimised encodings of their past week's programmes (ideal for PocketPC, in fact they've given a lot of PPC devices to their staff to test). Could be fantastic.

thanks for your reply
any other suggest?
how it's possible that no one have my problem?
real player really doesn't work on windows mobile 2003?
it' a big BUG!!!

It could be 2 things afaik
1 realplayer doesn't like nat. It needs to open aa connection back to the mobile device to send the data. The device opens a control channel, and the streaming server opens a streaming data connection. Why does it work on the pc? either the pc has a non natted public ip address, or the player falls back to streaming via the control channel, this isn't happening on the ppc player.
2 ppc realplayer doesn't like http streams and only supports rtsp streams

thank you for yout technical reply
i can only reply on point 2:
the links provided (rai) directyl redirect to rtsp streams files
if you watch the clip info during the first loading, real player ppc show the correct rstp location
i'll try with ppc2002
last year it worked with wifi connection

always seems ok (configuration & requirements):
http://www.expressresponse.com/cgi-...st_name=&last_name=&email_address=&telephone=
http://www.expressresponse.com/cgi-...cument&search_input=JSS_0019.html&session_id=[[session_id]]
but it doesn't work
damn real!

i've compliled a support form on real web site, let's wait for their reply..

Its got to be a problem with REAL, as every stream ive tried in windows media player always seems to work.
I didnt manage to get any of those test streams to work.

yes!
with microsoft media player almost all files play in streaming!

Just found buried in O2's website:
Question 5:
Can I use Realplayer with Xda?
Answer:
Yes - all content stored on Xda will be usable. You are not able to stream Real content using O2 MobileWeb at this time.

So I guess they block the necessary ports. No idea why they would want to, but it's their network after all.

Streaming TV FULLSCREEN please!!!

Hi all. Has anyone tried streaming TV using WMP10 (& PocketstreamerPro) and managed to get it in FULLSCREEN? I'm really getting peeved off with a viewable image the size of a stamp!!
Videos are OK in TCPMP, but it doesn't support streaming TV.
Or does anyone know of any plug-ins for TCPMP which allow it to stream? really need some help here..... :?
The latest tcpmp beta (1.71b IIRC) support tv streaming and mms. You should give it a try. For other format, try PVplayer

Hi again. I'm struggling to find that version of tcpmp that you quoted. I can only find version 0.71. Is that the same? Probably not! Could you point me in the right direction of a download link please? Cheers.
I'm pertty sure 1.71 was a typo. Get the latest version here:

Yes, sorry for this. The version 1 is planned soon, and we are still at zero versionning. BTW, PVplayer is only for operator coded TV or movies. TCPMP is suited for a lot of streaming channels, and can also guess the link of the stream if you provide it with the URL of the containing web page in the file open dialog.
You REALLY can stream Internet TV through TCPMP on wifi!!!

Hi again. I actually bought PocketstreamerPro, only to find it way too restrictive and quite useless (as WMP 10 only shows TV in a small window and I can't find a workaround for it).
I fiddled around with TCPMP to no end, and to no avail I might add. But then I checked back to find your response, which implies that you can definately stream through TCPMP using the 'File Open' menu. Well, as there was nothing to link to (I had no format for storing the URL), I couldn't do it.
So I found a website called TV4all.com and copied some of the URLs there and typed them into the URL bar in my browser, which opened up Windows media player on my desktop PC. There I saved it as a '.mru' playlist (also checked in associations in TCPMP in addition to HTTP and MMS) and copied that file onto my storage card. TCPMP could and did find this and presto! I'm now streaming in full screen to my betaplayer (it takes a while to actually start working though). I now have access to potentially hundreds of Internet TV channels! I will explore further, but is this the way you do it? or do you have a much simpler process? feedback is most welcome right about now!!
Thanks for your help thus far though.

Hi, I have a question...

.... additional: i tried opening azn.tv and saigontivi thru the video streaming app and its not working..
Anyone got any good pages that just offer direct links to the feeds ? Nearly every site I find you have to go through multiple pages and some of them wont even show properly.

Gold star for you, sir! Here's my additions, the CNN Pipeline feeds (the first of which is usually CNN International on a live stream):
http://dynamic.cnn.com/video/meta/live/stream.1.large.asx?nsfg=&CNNid=
http://dynamic.cnn.com/video/meta/live/stream.2.large.asx?nsfg=&CNNid=

http://dynamic.cnn.com/video/meta/live/stream.4.large.asx?nsfg=&CNNid=
At this point I'd just like to point out that I just tried to load these streams up on my device via my wifi connection, and WMP won't accept the first stream (just goes round and round 'connecting' and eventually times out, and TCPMP errors back and can't play any items in the playlist) - think this is because of the way that the player is assigned an authorisation access code which is appended to the stream name in an odd way AFTER the browser initially does an http get to the stream URL. Tried stripping it back down to its plain reflector URL, but got an Access Denied in WMP, but I'll keep on trying to figure it out. The streams work fine on my PC, but of course they were designed to be played back on a PC (with more advanced WMP support).
The streams are ~360kbps, but will go lower I think. Enjoy while they're available, don't know how much longer they'll last as publicly-accessible...

BBC News Live streams:
One of these is usually used to stream the news live as it's broadcast every day, and if there's a special event / important news event they sometimes use two or more of the streams to broadcast footage or reports.
Sometimes they link to these streams on the BBC News site, sometimes they don't, but here are the links anyway:
Stream 1:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsa/n5ctrl/live/bb/wm/video/now1_bb.asx (WMP format)

all seem good liking the cnn ones
So the CNN Pipeline ones work for you? Interesting, I couldn't get them to work on my Vario 2... How do you have your device set up software-wise?
only have a vario 1 , and was via wifi, just clicked the link and it opens in wmp 10
CNN pipeline worked on my Vario II, then a day later it did not work and it gave me an error message.
Dont know why, although I know CNN Pipeline is a subscription-based service - they may have problems with it, which is why I managed one day to get free access to it, while access was declined the following day.
Have a look at this wikipedia entry for details of each feed:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cnn_pipeline
I know that when you access the initial URL it authenticates your IP for access to the stream, then forwards you to the mms reflector URL to actually load the content... I couldn't get WMP10 to properly access the first stream to get authenticated, and TCPMP wouldn't do it either.
It plays on my PC fine, so I know it's an authentication issue. Quite annoying cause I like the pipeline feeds
what's the difference betgween http:// and mms: ?
Is it best to use a mms link directly, or instead to go through the http:// first?
MMS = multimedia streaming protocol, it's true realtime streaming. HTTP is hypertext transfer protocol, the way that computers talk to web servers, the agreed standard if you will (http contains a big list of common codes which describe the status of a connection or request, such as HTTP 200 OK for a valid request, HTTP 404 Not Found for an attempt to access a nonexistent resource, HTTP 403 Forbidden... that's obvious, HTTP 500 Internal Server Error (usually seen if a PHP, SQL or CGI script is incorrectly configured on the server). it's been added to since it was first invented, and various programs can now pseudo-'stream' files are they're downloaded - but you can't stream in realtime over HTTP properly, it's always a fudge as there has to be a static file hosted somewhere for the transfer to begin. Therefore, most streaming servers (like the CNN ones) host the .asx (playlist) files on an http server, and if you download .asx file and drag it into Notepad, you'll see the links to the mms server, along with a reflector port and other information necessary to authenticate the client for access (used most for authenticated services or limited access streams). HTTP will be used as a fallback, but in most cases MMS (or TCP RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol)) will be used, as it's the best solution for streaming media in realtime.
Using ORB from www.orb.com you can watch and listen to all stuff you have on your home PC.
Now THERE's a thought - I had it installed about a year ago but didn't have free Internet then! Oh MAN... I could watch all my films on the go... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Personally I'm waiting for the Slingbox Pro to come over to the UK, I know my housemate's getting one but I may well end up getting one myself too, hah.
I have used orb on pocket pc since i got my wizard - now with the hermes it has the extra 3G option. which is a whole new expierence.
Bump as this thread is useful. Posting this via my Vario 2
I'd be interested to see what T-Mobile have to say about this... since according to their Web 'n' Walk fair usage policy.....
Fair use policy applies. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers, the web 'n' walk service is not to be used for other activities such as (but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video downloads and internet based telephony. If such use is detected, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied which will result in a reduced speed of transmission.

Orb and Digital TV Streaming
To those of you who use Orb, what TV tuner card have you got to get live digital tv streming over Orb?
i've been using Orb and it's a great piece of software, but I suppose the real benefit of Orb is to stream live digiotal TV that does not normally stream over the web (as you can stream live tv over the web on the Vario II with 3G/HSDPA without Orb).
I understand only a handful of TV tuner hardware are compatible with Orb. Which one do you use? How well do they work? How much have you spent?
thanks

mpeg4 rtsp

Is there anything out there for WM2003 (or possibly WM2005, not necessarily my M1500) that will allow me to recieve Streaming MPEG4 over RTSP ?
The horrible Realplayer does the job on the PC, but I need a hand held device to do it, my M1500 (XDA2i) would be ideal, but I am open to sugestions on this too.
Any info most appreciated!
Thanks peeps
I wrote a big post about trying CorePlayer/TCPMP, then realised DUR, it doesn't support RTSP.
Tried RealPlayer PPC version? I have an installer (ActiveSync) on my PC if you want me to upload it and pass it on to you to try...
Thanks for the reply, I have just found Real PPC, but cannot get it to work.
I have a streaming device, which with a laptop that i can Ad Hoc to and recieve the stream via Real, using the rtsp://<ip>ort/Name in the open location field. However, exactly the same process does not open the rtsp on the PPC. I'm struggling to see what could be wrong, as there are simply not that many things to change.
If you have any ideas, (or can explain why i put /Name in the ulr, as i don't understand that bit of the line) then please let me know. Have you got Real PPc to work?
Thanks

I Finally Found Out How to Get YouTube To Work![new]

On your wizard, go to this address: http://m.youtube.com
The videos load perfectly and work 100% using Internet Explorer (the videos automatically open in the streaming video player thing). I think YouTube just set up this site today(to test for the upcoming iPhone), but it works perfect on our wizards as well! Try it!
Nice, got there but when I try to play a video I get an unspecified error on Windows Media. Does this work with WM5 or I must install something?
I'm not sure about WM5, never tested it (i'm using WM6 XDA-MOBILE 6). When I click on a video, it opens in the streaming video player that was bundled with XM6.
Anyone else have luck? I got mine to work ^_^
Only works from certain cell providers!
Seems as though YouTube's only sharing the love with certain cell providers... I was able to successfully test the site using Cingular. The site didn't work using my 8125, Wifi & my local cable ISP!!!
Site loads Video does not on T-Mobile USA.
I just tried it on Faria's WM5 with wifi!! Works great!!
I can't get it to work. I've tried opening m.youtube.com and clicking on video opens media player 10. These are 3gp files (?). It just says "Unspecified error".
WM5 / MDA vario.
Even i got the same error with WM5.. anything else need to be downloaded..
Maybe we WM2005 users should install a codec or something? What does Faria's WM2005 ROM have? I'm on a spanish WM2005.
Post your provider and connection method.
Because Youtube and fodavone officially announced their service in NL so it might have to to with ip ranges or provider networks for it to work.
I checked it over T-Mobile NL and it worked BTW.
It indeed opened up in the streaming player that i found useless at first.
Running Faria Crossbow Real Thing ROM.
Faria's WM5 3.3 has streaming video installed. All I do is navigate to m.youtube with PIE and select a video, it automatically pops up streaming video and it plays.
I'm on Cingular/ATT and it works with WIFi and GPRS.
It has absolutely nothing to do with your provider. I tested on my cingular 8125 running XM6, on both T-mobile and on cingular and it works fine (although I recommend using it through wi-fi, as the videos can take a while to load if you're stuck with a slow gprs connect).

So, unless someone can tell us what fario's WM5 has in it... I'm personally stuck using this method that I just stumbled upon this morning. I guess the only ugly part is that I have to copy the ID part out of the URL, and past it into the little 'youtubedownload' program. Then, explore over to the downloaded file to play it in TCPMP.
I wish, I wish, It would pop up from my browser after clicking it from there, like fario's code does. (what programs does it use?)
The 3 files in the link below are the 2 plugins, that need to go into the plugin directory of TCPMP, and then the .exe that is the download util. .Yea, Ugly.

Why buy a slingbox when the Dreambox seems to be capable of doing it itself? Any way, long time has passed and my quesion still is, does any one know how to get this software?
yep. still waiting...
Closest thing i could find...

From what i've seen with this app, it does what you want it to do.
Since it's opensource and written in PHP, i think it can be modified to contain pre-selected settings just for PDA viewing.
Btw, i think you can forget about just a single program without a middleman doing the transcoding, since the Dreambox is incapable of transcoding its stream.
What the Youtube video could be is a website showing links to all the channels, and by clicking on them it launches TCPMP with the stream.
moullas,
you are wrong. why ? because Dreambox uses mpeg2 streaming which is the easisest codec to decode for any client type. That's why a middleman is not required.
And if we had the VLC player for ppc, we could watch directly Dreambox channels.
Here is the VLC player for PPC
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1545
unfortunately it does not run on Hermes (as far as I remember)
that's why I tried to compile it from source a while ago but I couldn't succeed.
if it runs well on anyone's wm6 device , please let us know.

Click to collapse
What do you want VLC to do that TCPMP or CorePlayer cannot?
Well that restreamer seems to be okay, but its not as simple as that application that he uses. Maby i should try it... The problem for me isnt that it need to be compressed true another computer but that i need the simplicity from the application, cklick and play!
