WiFi card in xdaII

WiFi card in xdaII......
I have installed a sandisk wifi card in the xdaii and it detects hot spots ok but when i try to open a page in IE comes up page not found. I have the network card settings to "this card connects to the internet etc" and i think i'm doing everything ok. surely not all the hotspots in manchester uk can be locked can they?? are we really a nation of paranoid people?? I don't want to crash networks just get me a free fast connection in St Ann's Square whilst I'm having lunch!!
any ideas.

well if i had a wireless lan and a connection to the internet i surely would have a firewall aswell
suppose the easiest way to find out where your issue is, is if you have a wireless lan at home which you can test the connection with
read a review which say that the sandisk card works ok with the xda2

The SanDisk WiFi card works for sure. I'm writing this with it.
Check the network settings under Settings->Connections->Network->Extended->Networkcard->Wireless. You may have to manually select and enable the network.

I have just enquired of Expansys UK if the Sandisk WiFi SD Card will work with the XDA II and they said NO, it has problems???? As I can't find another WiFi D card anywhere, it leaves me a little frustrated. Particularly as it seems it (XDA II) doesn't work with Tom Tom Navigator 11 Bluetooth either, which was my next purchase! If a few people can CONFIRM that the XDA 11 does actually work with the Sandisk WiFi Card, I'll risk buying one, as I need WiFi. Many thanks Steve

Not being to rude here, however Expansys told you crap.. I'm using one here which was purchased from Expansys. Albeit a little difficult to set up I'm online with my own home wireless Network.

There is another WiFi card available in the market, saw it in an interview with XDA sales people, it's from Socket. Got a review here.

sundisk worked for me right from the box. no driver to install.
just entered my home wlan wep password and got connected.
The original person asking about it: if a network need a key,
it can often show up as "active" but in IE will simply won't load anything...

Hi there, thanks for your response. I access the Internet via a Broadband connection through a Wireless Router in my Office and wish to use the XDA II around the office on occasion (with a working WiFi SD Card installed). Have you used your WiFi card in similar circumstances? I am cautious because Bluetooth Car Kit doesn't work, Bluetooth GPS doesn't work at the moment (appreciate this is not WiFi) but trying to buy something this time around THAT DOES WORK with the XDA II. many thanks Steve

Your impression regarding the XDA II is wrong.
Thanks to TOWA Bluetooth GPS does work. Its just that Microsoft is trying to impose a different Bluetooth architecture than that HP has been using with the IPAQ (they've done it before and they'll do it again). :wink:
As I said above, I've been using the SanDisk WiFi-card on my XDA II since day 1 when I got the device. I've used in at home with my wireless router, in the office through an access point and in the hotspot at Starbucks.
Only problems I've had sofar were in one network that was using a D-Link access point, where I couldn't get in - on the other hand also my PC had problems with this network).
When you insert the card that LED on it should start flashing. If it doesn't turn solid green(yellow) after a few minutes, the network is not connecting. You can check this through the applet on the task bar (Wireless network status). If it says searching it hasn't found or connected to your network. In this case go to Settings->Connections-->Connections->Extended->Networkcard. Ith should list the available networks. Select your network and select Connect on the options popup-menu. If you have encryption enabled it will ask you for the paramters (I've had to got through this procedure a couple of times when I put in a wrong code on the initial setup).
If the LED is solid green then you have connected to the network. If PIE doesn't work check the IP-settings again using that applet on the task bar (Wireless Network Status).
ANd I'm sure that Bluetooth Car Kit will be working soon also. But then again, the XDA doesn't have (andd never promised) Voice Dialing anyway. :?

Thanks for this. I am really pleased with my XDA II. I guess I wanted to install Bluetooth GPS and Handsfree Bluetooth in my car and then found that my chosen purchases the Tom Tom Navigator 2 Bluetooth GPS and the Parrot CK3000 Handsfree Car kit don't currently work with the XDA II Bluetooth. I understand that Tom Tom/O2 etc are working on it.
A colleague has since told me that I wouldn't get BOTH devices working together in my car at the same time anyway. i.e. I could have a Bluetooth Car Kit or a Bluetooth GPS but not have the 2 devices working together? Do you know if this is correct? I appreciate your help on this.
My Wireless Network/Broadband router is the Netgear 824M 802.11B and this is what I wish to use in conjunction with SD WIFI Card in my XDA II.
When I tried to order from Expansys and told them it eas for use with an O2 XDA II they said "It will not work" so you can see my predicament. £100+ purchase then possible not work, and they have pre-warned me, so a refund would be looking iffy?

I don´t know what Expansys UK says about the SanDisk WiFI, I have bought one for 3 weeks ago using with the XDA II without any problem , just works.
I´m using too TomTom with a SatNav Bluetooth GPS and a BT headset.
Of couse I use Towas bluetooth patch.

If you read this thread, you'll discover that someone called Towa has fixed the Bluetooth problem, so you should be fine once you've applied his patch. Here's a quote from that thread of someone who can answer your question about simultaneous Bluetooth connections:

I have the same problem as Xdaer, I've received advice off-forum from various people (thanks Faisal, tbd and others) but I still can't browse my broadband connection. All I keep getting is that 'this page cannot be found' :evil:
Can anyone who has successfully done this please just post the settings they have at their 'network card' settings?
BTW, I understand that its currently impossible to activesync via wifi, can anyone confirm/deny this?

I use to active sync via wifi.
I´m using a Sandisk SD wifi card. XDA II.
I have at home a D-link 614+ with the firmware upgrade (D-link)
It just works.
When I travell and try to connect to some hot spots that are password protected, then I get the messange can´t load the page.
But will normal unprocteded spots no problems. Okey in same airports you have to pay to access the AP but thats another story.

Under connections->Advanced->Network card-> wireless tab, you should see your signal labeled 'available' or connected.
The networks to access is 'all available'
and check 'automatically connect to non-preferred networks'
in the network adapters tab, you should
my network connects to (work or internet) - works with both for me, but each time it reverts to work, even if i save internet..
see the San DisK Wifi card, clicking on it should give you
the ip address screen on one tab and the name server in another tab. in my case i have to specify the ip, the subnet and the default gateway (rather than server assigned), and the name server
Then under connections->select networks-> 'programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using: here i have the name of the network which you configured above.
this should be easily visible from the connections->tasks tab and you can now set the proxy from here - usually with port 8080.
I hope this helps - let me know if it works and do ask again if i am missing out something here..

But i've just got an xdaII... i've set up wireless all over the house and was told the xda supports wifi... you lot are talking about a wifi attachment... does that mean i can't use the xdaII on my wirless netwrok without the sandisk modem?

you're correct. the XDA II doesnt have builtin WiFi, you need
a small attachment "sandisk wifi card". search for it via google.

I have not tried synching via Wi-Fi - so i have no idea. Do let me know if you get it to work.
One can obviously access an email account, though i have not been able to access my mail on the exchange server via WiFi for some reason but i suspect it is a configuration issue that i have not sorted so far

Sandisk SD Wi-fi Not playing ball!

Having just installed a wi-fi network in my house I though (bad idea) I'd buy myself a wi-fi card for my XDA II. Everything works fine, except fo course, the XDA side of things.
Ok, heres what I've done / got.
I have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router which connects three PC's with no problems at all, in fact I would recommend it for it's ease of set-up. Got my wi-fi SD card thingy sticking out top of XDA II and it said all things I expected it to say, connecting to linksys using Work all the normal stuff. Now, heres the bit I hate, if I go into connections | Network Cards... To the Configure Wireless Networks bit, it says `Linksys... Available, great I though! Told it to connect and it says `connecting` then back to `available`!!!! The bloody light in the wi-fi card just sits thre blinking at me!
I've managed to connect twice, don't know how I did it, but if I disconnect, that's it, won't reconnect for love na money.
Any help would be really appreicated.

Tried that, and lots of warm reboots, two hard resets... I'm writing this on the xda, but it's only luck that it's connected!

I guess i get the same problem but less often it gets fixed more frequently. Do tell me about settings and your ROM version. Let me see if there is something obviously different that I am doing.

I had similar problems until I upgraded to the latest software – it was better but still not the best, I find it slightly more reliable if I switch the radio off before ejecting the card.

as for settings well, most are blank when i would expect something like work or internet, wep is enabled and err, thats about it. No vpn, no proxy and mostly no connection!

Interestingly i had great difficulty installing the SanDisk software when I had your version. I upgraded using the version at clubimate.com and that problem got fixed. In your case however, you are not having any installation difficulties (and clubimate wont accept your imei unless your phone was bought in the UAE/gulf region.
In my case, the proxy is set, and the card is supposed to connect automaticall to "all available". WEP is off.
Is the signal strong enough? Perhaps you are at the edge of the coverage and that explains the intermittent nature of things?
I am not sure if this helps but let me know and I will try to see how else your problem can be solved.

The signal must be strong, I've tried it within an inch of my access point! I have tried to connect in starbucks and the lobby of a hotel I know has a hot-spot, flashing is all I get! I can see the network's they appear as 'available' but that's all. I haven't been able to connect to my home network since yesterday!!!
I could get violent, and I thought bluetooth was a pain!

I got the same problems until I've updated the drivers for the SD WiFi from Sandisk.
It's still not plug&Play as I thought it to be but much better. If does not work just when I plug in the card a soft reset ill do.
The latest version is from Oct. 2003 I think

I read somewhere that SanDisk SD WiFi card would connect reliably to a 802.11b router but the combo 802.11b/g router created problems. SanDisk was talking of needing an asic change??
Anyone confirm this as I just got a SanDisk SD WiFi card for my XDA2 and am now researching whether to get a 802.11b or 802.11g wireless router at home.

I have the G router from Linksys, but I get the same problems at a friend's house and he has the B one....

D-Link DI-624 802.11g High-Speed Wireless Router
I'm thinking of getting this router and it's wireless pc card (DWL-G650) for my laptop.
Anybody had success/failures with the XDA2 SanDisk SD WiFi card connecting to this router?

Yep, that's the latest version.
I'm using it with no major problems except what I've described above.

Just a quick update.
I don't know what happened but since I've installed pocketWiNc the SanDisk Wi-Fi SD is just a brill ! :lol:
I just pop it in and within 3-4 seconds I'm online.
Could it be that that SW manages the card better ?

I have a Buffalo router (b and g combo). the sandisk card connects with occaisonal exceptions.

Here's the Scoop on D-Link Router & SanDisk SD WiFi
Well I just rx'd all the components for my home wireless network:
1) D-Link DI-624 Super G Router
2) D-Link DWL-G650 Super G Cardbus Adapter
3) SanDisk SD WiFi card for my XDA2
Got some interesting stuff to share with ya'll.
The SanDisk WiFi would not connect to the router. After talking with SanDisk tech support, they state they only support connections to 802.11b routers and not 802.11b/g routers. I was ready to return the D-Link router. I called D-Link tech support shoping to find out if I could disable the g and only run b (802.11). No way. A 2nd D-Link tech called me 10 min later and had a solution. Update the router firmware from 2.25 driver to the latest version 2.28 and then disable the Super G mode. Voila! SanDisk WiFi connects without a problem at 801.11b (11MB/s). The laptop connects to the router at 802.11g (54MB/s). Cool.
I'm using 64-bit WEP hex encryption. Using www.texan.net/speed.htm I get ~420Kbps (50K bytes/sec). Not bad. I'm using Time Warner's RoadRunner cable service with a Motorola BitSurfer modem. Using www.bandwidthplace.com, I clocked the router/cable connection at 2.7Mb/s. This web site doesn't seem to work on a pda.
Anyway, nuff said. In summary, there is a way with the new D-Link super-G router to have your XDA2 WiFi B cake and eat it too!

I can *sometimes* get a connection to my network. However this is only occasionaly. I get a great connection on my neighbours Airport though !
Any ideas? I've looked into firmware for my router. It says that I'm running Firmware version: 2.61 build 2. Strange that the D-Link website shows the lastes as being Firmware 2.57b3 2/7/2002. :?:

I suspect the SanDisk WiFi SD Card may have problems with any manufacturers 802.11g router, not just D-Link. An innovative home techie user happen to "stumble" on the combination that made his SanDisk WiFi card work with the D-Link g router. Kudos to him.
I'm not familar with your D-Link products. My only suggestion would be to ensure you have the latest firmware for your hardware revision. i.e. the DI-704P has 3 hardware revisions: A, B & C. Drivers are unique to a hardware version. Ensure you have the right firmware.
Then look at the options in the firmware setup and experiment with turning things off to see if your SanDisk wifi connection improves. Can you disable any g performance aspects?
I looked at the D-Link website, the DI-704P router is not even wireless???

Dude, there's no 802.11 anything on this router. Maybe that's why you can't connect your SanDisk card?

cshields1 - you're right about the DI-704P router. It's not wireless. It just enables me to share a broadband cable connection. I plug the router into the DWL-900AP+ which is a wireless access point (801b-only).
I followed your suggestions about the firmware for both these items. They were certainly out of date as I'd never updated them since I purchased them well over a year ago. Now I've got the latest firmware for my items (which are both hardware type 'B').
Still no joy with the Sandisk card ! However the internet on my laptop is faster than ever. I've passed it on to Sandisk technical support - along with the link for this thread - so we'll see how it goes. I'll let you know. Cheers dude - philg :wink:

Sandisk SD WIFI card & IE not working?

Could someone please tell me why I can connet to my wireless network at home, but I can't view any web pages or download any emails on my XDA II!!

Works fine for me mate..
Things to check.
1) XDAII Has an ip address assigned to it within the correct subnet for your home wifi.
2) XDAII Has the correct default gateway configured which will either be your wireless access router, or another type of router you have that provides internet access.
3) That your XDAII can see the network available to it through the start, setting, connections, connections, advanced, network card bit. Make sure that you actually tell it to connect to your network too. If you can't see it and you are sure the wifi card is installed ok, make sure that you have enabled SSID broadcast on your WAP.
Let us know how you get on.

He means that your Wireless accesspoint should have broadcast SSID enabled. If you have not intentionaly disabled it, it is most likely that it is enabled and thus not the issue. Is your wireless WEP encrypted? If it is, did the Pocketpc ask you specifically for the WEP encryption key when it found your network?

I am using a XDA II. Having received a faulty 'backpack', now replaced, I am still trying to get it to connect through a Sandisk CF Wi-Fi card to a D-Link 900+ AP hanging off an Intel router and my Linux server. In desperation I connected the CF card through a PCMICA adaptor into my notebook. After tweaking the 900+ AP (using v. 2.61 firmware), I found that it liked 64kb WEP, SSID on, Channel 11, Infrastructure (not Ad Hoc), and left on fully automatic so D-Link 650 Wi-Fi card in my notebook runs at 22 Mbps, and the Sandisk card at 11 Mbps.
But does it run in the XDA II you ask? Nope! I think that Sandisk's software leaves a lot to be desired. I am using vxIPConfig and vxUtil tools to see what is what ... but to no effect. I would gladly flick the Sandisk card now I know their software is lacking.
Any clues from other users?

Sorry not to actually come up with answers, but I thought you might gather some comfort from the fact that my XDA II/Sandisk combo is driving me nuts too. You are not alone....!
First thing I did was remove the pre-installed Socket wifi s/w and install the Sandisk stuff, but although my XDA can happily see my network, it will not log on no matter what I seem to do.
Am going to review some of the other helpful posts here and try the tips and will report back......!

The CD-ROM that came with mine seems to have been designed for WinCE, and not Mobile Windows 2003 for the PPC. As a result I cannot get rid of the Sandisk 128M+WiFi CompactFlash Card settings from the 'Configure Network Adaptors' area. I have to go in via my PC and ActiveSync (3.7) and rename the two offending .dll files before the CD-ROM software removes the drivers. I manually delete the renamed .dll.old files from the XDA II.
Sandisk seem pretty useless. I let them know of these problems and the link they gave me was to the straight wireless LAN card ... That didn't work, so go figure!
I am told the Sockets drivers out of the UK are better (for basically the same card), however, their FTP site does not work .. some say it hasn't worked since April 2004. More useless information, except that their docs. leave Sandisk for dead!
I keep wondering what the so-called 'Zero Configuration' tools that are supposed to be part of Mobile Windows 2003 actually do? I just can't see why the Sandisk card works with my D-Link DWL-900AP+ (802.11b/g) and with my ancient Airport access points on my notebook, but not on the XDA II on the rare occasions that I get the blinking green light (very rare and I don't know why???). <sigh!>

Sandisk CF Wi-Fi card in backpack

I am still having troubles getting my XDA II's (running Windows Pocket PC 2003) Sandisk Cf Wi-Fi card to do anything more than just blink. I have given up on using it with my D-Link DWL-900 AP+ access point, and now resurrected an old Airport running at 11 Mbps. The Sandisk card works fine in my notebook with both access points.
Yes, I have asked Sandisk what gives ... but no reply to date. Trouble is, I don't see the things that Sandisk's Pocket PC Troubleshooting guide (which comes on the CD-ROM from them) says I should, e.g., a Wi-Fi singal icon.
I don't think its WEP/SSID issues ... just plain old hardware connectivity coupled with the seemingly weak software from Sandisk.
I sure would appreciate some advice.

Try the socket drivers. It is the same card as the Sandisk but I find their driver much better. Works well for me never had any issues connecting anywhere. Socket Driver, Sandisk Card. Just make sure you get rid of ALL of the Sandisk driver from your XDAII.

Thanks for this ... I FTP'd the Sockets driver over from the UK and installed ... Yes, I get a blinking green light. So now it is a matter of setting up the Access Point(s) to suit the Sandisk CF Wi-Fi card in the XDA II. As I said, it works no problems with both my APs in my notebook, so I will get there.
I had a dreadfully incorrect reply from Sandisk technical help ... so much so that I will now buy another brand (Sockets) and trash the Sandisk.
I'll keep you posted. :!:

For what it's worth, I use the Dell TruMobile CF WiFi card in my backpack and find it works very well. Also like the bundled access software, was easy to install and find it easy to use.

Perhaps you could let me know if there are any particular settings on the Access Point that the CF card favours:
Does it work with 802.11 b/g APs set to AUTO (I know it is only an 11 Mbps card)
SSID - on/off
WEP - on/off
MAC - on/off
Any other advice on settings?

The D-Link DI-604 is a wired router, isn't it? You can't connect a XDA via Ethernet (cable) - there is no device, that would make this possible.
Did you mean the DI-614+, which is a wirless router?
Anyway you need a SD wireless LAN (also called WiFi) card for your XDA to be able to connect to a wirless router. My Google search resulted this online shop: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=106495

But as you can read in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=5605&start=25 there are compatibility issues between the Sandisk Wifi SD card and most of D-Link's wireless LAN routers (including the DI-614+). The only router I got working with the Sandisk card is the DI-624(without "+")
A new Sandisk SD card is announced, that will combine the WiFi adapter with a memory card of 256 MB capacity. Maybe this new card will have another chipset, that will be compatible with all D-Link devices.

I just discovered the new WiFi/256 MB combo SD card at eBay:

But the card is NOT COMPATIBLE with the XDA/MDA I!

sandisk say that it will not work on xda2 devices at all
the wifi card without mem does work however
