ActiveSync Bluetooth - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

After a lot of try and error, I have finally managed to activesync over bt using the provided MS BT stack and the bt tools. Currently the connection is very unstable and it can dicsonnect seconds after connecting or sometimes after about 15 minutes. What is the range of the bt on the xda 2 and will the situation improve if I get a 100m range usb dongle for my pc?

The Bluetooth radio on the XDA II is class 2. This means that its range is about 10 meters (or up to 30 meters). You can't extend the range even if you use a class 1 (100-meter range) Bluetooth dongle. I've already tried that.

Slightly off topic, I appologise...
Can any person suggest a good USB Bluetooth device with which XDA II with Active Sync?
Thanks, Ben.

I use a Billionton Class 1 Bluetooth USB dongle.

One of these:

If it works well with the XDA, that's enough for me, thanks.

illwill, can you tell me how you managed to get activesync to work over bluetooth? I cant get it to do anything, a step by step would be very helpful for myself and others. Thank you.

I use a Sitecom class I (100m) BT usb dongle and managed to get Activesync to work with my MDA II over bt connection after installing the wonderful BT Tools from Tobias Waldvogel:

You could use Pocket Bluetooth Tools (http://bluetooth.i-networx.de/index_e.html).
It's free, works like a charm and it's got a guide too. The only trick my friend had a problem with, was setting up the correct COM port on the PC in PC's bluetooth settings.
have fun, let me know if you need more help.

AS over BT
Delete your pc from bonded devices on your xda II if you have it bonded
Here is how I got my bluetooth to activesync with pc. Go into ActiveSync on pc and select File-> connection settings.
Make sure that "Allow serial cable or infrared...." is checked and you have put the COM port as the BT serial port.
On your xda, turn off Bluetooth and then turn it back on.
Go to Settings->System and select Bluetooth settings
Click on the start button to start BT Activesync. You will get a message that you need to set up a device that supports BT AS, XDA will search for devices and find your pc. After bonding pc, you will get a message stating that ActiveSync BT is now setup.
Open AS and select Tools -> Connect via BT (or something), and your pc will prompt you for authorisation.
*If it all works like mine then it will connect ok but the connection will drop out as soon as you try to do anything worth while like surfing the internet over BT or syncing AvantGo*

ilwill you the man. That worked a treat. I had just about given up until i read your post. Good work mate....

Well I have this problem....
my BT software (widcomm 1.4.2) insists on setting the com port as com 10 and above...re-installed several times...same thing....and of course Active sync does not even recognize com 10.....any thoughts
one more thing worth notinh...the widcom sites speaks of a BT stack for ppc phone edition and a dev kit for it....(which do support headset and handsfree in addition to the other profiles...) so any news on where this product stands where can we get it??

My Bluetooth dongle also uses the Widcomm software. But it assigned COM7 as the Bluetooth serial port. Did you assign a serial port to any Bluetooth profile besides the ActiveSync profile?

whenever I try to assign a port to any service...it is always greater than 10!!
can this be an XP thing??

No, I also use Windows XP.
I'm not sure about this but try this if it works. Launch the Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe). Then navigate to the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\Services". Under that key are several keys named "0001", "0002", "0003", and so on. Look for the key whose registry value "Name" is set to "ActiveSync". In that key, change the setting of registry value "ComPortNumber" to a number lower than 10 (like 9). Then restart your PC and see if that changes the Bluetooth serial port setting.

XDA2 Sync using Bluetooth Dongle

I am considering purchasing a bluetooth dongle so I can sync my XDA2 with my computer. Does the XDA2 bluetooth stack support this and how easy is this to set up?
If anyone can recommend a decent dongle as well I would appreciate it. Thanks
I can sync my XDA II via my Billionton Bluetooth Class 1 dongle. You just need to select the ActiveSync profile when you install the Bluetooth software to your desktop PC.
i use the belkin dongle
i had some problems setting it up at first because i believed that
i would start activesync by pressing on the activsync button under the bluetooth settings
but as it turend out i had to choose the bluetooth bond under the activsync menu like with IR
also i made a seriel port on the pc and choose that under the pc activesync connections

Bluetooth and Activesync

Hi All, great forum this found out loads of info.
I have a real problem.
My connector on the Handset has broke so not able to sync with laptop.
Brought bluetooth dongle se up as instructions on the forum site.
But it does not work.
When i try to sync with activesync on PDA it comes up with.
Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. The communitations port is not available,Another program may be using the port or it may not be valid.
Any ideas please.
in activesync on the PC have you selected the correct serial port that your bluetooth is acting as
I have the same probs.

Hi.
I spent hours and hours trying to sep up Activesync and I found these and sorted it:
Bluetooth Drivers:
First I removed the old Bluetooth drivers as they are not needed.
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=3163
Com ports:
Then I reset the com ports.

I found this a little tricky, but I did it like this (using SP2 BT drivers on XP):
1.Start off with the phone and computer unpaired
2.Open the bluetooth menu (double click on the bluetooth icon in the system tray).
3.Select the comm ports tab and click to add a new INCOMING port. - This port got assigned to something stupid like comm 36.
4.Open device manager, and select the comm port that has just been made.
5. Go to properties->port settings->advanced and change it to a lower end port you know isn't in use. I selected 3.
6. Reboot the computer (not sure if this was really needed)
7. On the phone go to start->settings->system-bluetooth settings and make sure the in and outgoing ports are selected (again not sure if thats essential, but I have it on and it works for me). Then press start.
8. Bond with your computer. There isnt anything that tells you if this has worked or not (which is very frustrating), so you just gotta click ok and test it.
9. In activesync go into the connections bit and tell it to list on the comm that you set in step 3. To get to this bit you have to have synced your phone through usb or something first.
10. on the phone go to activesync->tools->connect via bluetooth (remember to turn bluetooth on first). If everything has gone to plan then it should connect fine.
I did this a few times until suddenly it worked. I'm not sure what I did the time that it did work, but it was something, so I would suggest trying slightly different things each time, but I'm pretty sure it was that way.
The whole process of setting up activesync over bluetooth is really tedious imo, and could be greatly improved in many many ways.
Good luck and let me know if this works.

when i try to bond with my computer...why is it asking for a PIN CODE? im trying to connect my imate to the computer so i can sync thru bluetooth and possibly use the internet when i'm around the house. Can someone please help me?
i tried the search engine, but its no help for me.
of course it will ask for a pincode in both directions.. meaning your phone and PC.. but this for the first time connection only... so what you want to do is to set each other as an authorized counterpart of the other so that you will not have any confirmations again
ok...sorry for these noobie question...i have finaly established a connection with my PC.
is it possible for me to use the internet from my computer on my PDA thru BT? for example, i want to use AIM *AOL* instant message, but im not sure if there is an internet connection on my PDA thru bluetooth. How would i tell if there is a connection? if not, how do i connect? please help? thanks again in advance
If you go into activesync and under options-->rules at the bottom there is the option to share your net connection with the synced device (called pass-through). My XDA II pops up a message when its making a gprs connection.
Hi @ all,
I did not tested it again because I now have a synccable.
This works fine.
Thanks a lot for your great support!
I installed Mobile Navigon4 (Update4.2). Because of the fact that my audiospeaker is not working (Audio about Headset & BT-Headset works fine/speaker is not defect)here is my question:
Can I use the PPC in my car for navigation ?I want to use the BT-Headset for the navigation audio output.Does it work?

ActiveSync via bluetooth instead of USB?

Dear all, is that possible to activesync mini and pc without USB? Whenever using usb to sync, mini will be charged. Can i prevent this auto charging problem coz lets say the battery in my mini is always full, will it do any harm when it keep charging whenever we activesync? If we can activesync using BT, what is the procedure?
Just go to bluetooth settings and do activesync setup. you will need to re pair your PC. works really well.
rmg, what do u mean by repair the pc, can u provide me with more details and step on doing this, appreciate your help thanks
rmg, i did what u told me, but when i click start button on the "bluetooth activesync setup:" the message box come out "please start bounding with other bluetooth device which support serial port or activesync profile as your activesync partner". i cannot get it done, can u help
how i do is it
1) bond PC and Phone in Bluetooth Settings in windows
2) on phone go to Activesync - tools - Options - Options - Dropdown box
Eather Bluetooth or 19200 default
3)Open active sync pc
4) Active Sync on Phone - Tools - Connect Via Bluetooth
and that is how i connect
In the advanced settings for your BT dongle you will need to check what Bluetooth Serial port number is being used. I found mine under local services. Once you have that go into the proerties for AS and where it lists the serial port to use put the COM Port number of your BT Serial port in that box. Now when you hit the AS button they should be able to connect with each other. Hope that helps.
One of the requirements is for you to have a ActiveSync 3.8.
Once you have that installed a new port will also be installed with the Windows BT stack. When the BT stack is detected a new port will also be available.
Now the next step is to go to the PPC. Hit Start go to Settings, System and then Blue Tooth Settings. Hit the Start button and it should bring you to the BT activation where you turn it on. Have everything checked. Once this is done, start pairing the laptop by having it detect the PPC and set a passkey for protection. Once they are paired, launch ActiveSync in the PC and go to File and Connection Settings. Once in this screen pit a check mark on the Allow Serial... Set it to the new port set by your BT Stack.
Once this is done, on the PPC, hit Start and go to Programs select ActiveSync. Hit Tools and then Connect via Bluetooth. This should then start working.
One bug I did find is that once you connect your device to your charger and initialize the ActiveSync over BT everything will work well. BUt once you remove it from the power conenction, your device will soft reset.
ok i will try, thanks to all of you
Stupid Q. If you're using BT for Activesync, the PC will still act like a pass-thru internet gateway, right? And you can now surf the net via BT (the same way you do it with wifi)?
Thanks.
@MC_Oliver
The answer is yes. If you are doing ActiveSync over Bluetooth it is the same as ActiveSync with a cable. You should have the same icon on the top of your screen. You can even browsse the files in your PPC.
Thanks dre.
Btw, curious if you have the same problem as I do in this thread? Thanks again.

Bluetooth Internet Connection to my Imate??

Hi all, tis my first post so please help.
Can i connect my Jam to my computer using bluetooth connectivity and then use my computer's internet connection to connect to the internet from my Jam?
If it is possible please Help me...
Just connect to AS on your PC via BT and your Jam will automaticaly use your computer's connection (this is called passthrough).
Does anyone know how to get passthrough to work is AS is via a Citrix session?

Well...It's a bit complicated but I'll try to write it down clearly, and easy...
I'm Hungarian (using Hungarian Windows) so I don't know some description from other languaged Windows. But I try to translate it properly...
So the solution:
What you need:
- The first thing you need is a Bluesoleil BT driver. It is a special Bluetooth Stack, and you're able to build a PAN (Personal Area Network) with is.
- The second stuff you need is a patch for the original MS Stack. You can add COM Ports with it.
- Active Sync 4.1
- A BT USB Donlge which has a PAN service.
Let's start it:
1. Install the BT Stacks to your magician.
2. Put your USB Bluetooth Dongle to your PC.
(It's not necessary to install the driver if you use Windows XP)
3. Open the "Bluetooth Devices" from: Start -> Settings -> Faxes and other hardwares -> Bluetooth Devices.
4. Search for your PPC.
5. Specify an "Incoming Port" (ex.: Com Port 8 Incoming).
6. Go to your PPC, use the patched MS Stack and specify an "Outgoing Port" (ex.: Com port 5 Outgoing).
7. Open Active Sync 4.1, and check the "Allow Usb connections" checkbox
8. Configure the "Allow connections on this port" to your Outgoing Port (ex.: If you use COM 5 for Outgiong port on your PPC, then config tihs option on your PC to the COM 5)
9. Configure the "This computer connects to the" dialog to "The Internet".
10. Change the BT Stack on your PPC with "Bluetooth Switch" (you'll need to perform a soft reset)
11. After Soft reset start Bluesoleil Stack and search for the USB Dongle.Double click on the PC icon to search services.
12. In services choose PAN network.
Your device will try to connect to your PC, and if it's connected run Active Sync via BT.If this is comleted, you should be able to connect to the internet from your PPC, and you can use MSN Messenger too if you have.
COMPLETE!!!
If you can't understand a step clearly (beacuse I've mistyped something, of translated it wrong etc.) write down what is it and I try to explain it more detailed.
If you have problems with this solution, reply it to me and I'll make a How To Do.PDF with pictures in it

Hmmm so where do i get this "Bluesoleil Stack" and once i get my Jam Connected to my PC thru Active Sync, CAN I NOW USE THE INTERNET ?? or does it needs some settings on my JAM.
i've always used MS$ bt stack with AS and surf without any problems.
My BT dongle is built by IVT corp, somehow I can't use MS BT stack so I have to install BlueSoleil to make it work.
So here's my problem...
PC: BlueSoleil 1.6.1.4 has only com ports 18-28 (can't add ports)
PPC: has only com ports 4 & 5 (can't add ports)
ActiveSync: Allows only com 1 & 2
How can you add ports so I can use the same for both PC and PPC?

Why U need to have this requirement??? The port# for both end independant. Eg: The AS on my desktop using Com4 and the AS on the PPC may use Com5.
IT's POSSIBLE to Navigate with Magician via BT with his ORIGINAL BT Stack.
The only "bug" is that there isn't a PAN.

Thanks for the reply, the problem is that my bluetooth recognizes only ports 18-29. I don't have any hidden/unused ports already checked it.
Dice, try to find out which important com-ports are used at all, write them down to paper, then take upper one and change down step by step each port lookslike busy, but free (don`t change important com-ports )! this way free your ports. then uninstall bluesoleil, reboot , and install bluesoleil again, reboot and you will see all bluetooth ports for bluesoleil in lower position. check ports in Activesync if its won`t be there reinstall Activesync 4.1!

I didn't read that guide. But step 8 is definitately misleading! As I said before, they are indenpendant and doesn't have to be match.
For our magician, the outgoing port is FIXED to com5. On the PC, the Com port number can be anything depends on what COM port is assigned as Serial connection for yr BT stack. Eg. I need to use Com 4 when I am using the Widcomm BT driver. But I need to use Com7 when I was trying the Tosbhiba BT stack. So, test them out if U are not sure what com port is using on yr PC for serial connection.

Sorry, if I mislead you.I use Bluesoleil Stack, and I've matched the ports and it works. After I tried it on different ports and it worked too.
AND ONE MORE THING:
I've tried an easier way to surf on the net via BT.But it still uses Bluesoleil ...
- All you need is just simply open Bluesoleil Stack on the PPC.
- Then on the PC go to Bluetooth Settings and start pairing the PPC.
- After the pairing scan for the Computer services on the PPC and if all thing are works well you get "PAN" option.Connect and you're Done!
All guys who says it is not necessary to get Bluesoleil Stack:
My dongle is an IVT BT Dongle and I can't use the original stack to surf the net.But if you say it's possible on some BT Dongles I believe it.
bolasz:
Thanks for the trick (start pairing from PDA).I'll try it and post the result
sheraz2000:
I've linked the Bluesoleil Stack, so you can download it.
I think you can use the internet without any setting on the JAM.If you can't use the net, try to set your firewall.
Well thats for today and once again sorry for the misleading.
Many thanks to those who replied.
I'm also using the IVT BT dongle. Looks like I need to use Bluesoleil to make it work. I've already managed to connected to PAN. I've already allowed Internet Connection sharing on my computer and disabled firewall but still can't surf the net
Are there any settings I need to change in the PAN?

You can force the IVT dongles to use the WIDCOMM stack as opposed to the Bluesoleil one. I couldn't find the thread I used on GSM-Forum, but I had a copy saved...
Basically all you do is:
0. Uninstall all your bluetooth software. Unplug the Dongle for this step
1. Download Widcomm 4.0.1.700 from here: http://www.mobidick.biz/downloads.shtml
2. Download Billyx's Patches from here: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=179871
3. SP2 Users: (i dont know if this step does anything, but i read somewhere to do it, and it everything worked for me. Though it might work if you skip this step)
Go to Start -> Run ->write "msconfig" (without the quotes) and press enter. Go to the services tab and uncheck Bluetooth Service. Then hit OK. You might wanna restart, i think i did step 4 before doing that though.
4. Install Widcomm. Make sure the Dongle is plugged in it should recognise the dongle and it began installing the issc drivers. Restart PC
(at this point widcomm should be blue and red, and asking for the dreadful license.)
5. Restart PC in Safe Mode. Use Billyx's patch to overwrite the files in C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software using the 2 .EXEs
and files in C:\WINDOWS\system32 using the .DLLs
6. Restart, and bluetooth should now be blue and white.
7. Connect your devices. Begin using them
You're done!!
It works well for me.[/url]
Hi,
I am successfully setup ActiveSync via bluetooth (and get internet access by activesync) using below method. No need to install stack or anything to PPC. I forgot where I found it, but I copied the step already.
To the author of this step, apologize me to paste your post here without your permission. My intention is to help others. Since I am success with this step, I share with others.
Here is the steps:
---
1)On your PC go to the Control Panel and select "Bluetooth". In the "Options" tab, make sure all the ticks are on. You'll now see a little bluetooth icon on your system tray. Makes it easier to access in the future. Your PC should also be ready to be found as long as you ticked the fist box in the step above.
2)On your Jam, Go to Start, Settings, System (Tab), Bluetooth Settings. On the screen that comes up you ONLY want to hit start. Leave the incoming and outgoing checkboxes OFF!!!
3)You will now be taken to the partnership screen, where you just follow the instructions to add your PC. Follow through until you hit finish. Close everything down until you're back at the today screen.
4)Back to your PC, double click on the Bluetooth icon in your system tray. Go to "Com Ports" (Tab) and click "Add". Choose incoming. A You'll see an incoming port added to the list (probably be the only item there). It should look like "COM X Incoming"
Remember what number is after COM. Close all windows, making sure you hit OK or Apply where you have to.
5)Open Active Sync on your PC. Hit File, Connection Settings. Enable the first tick, and select the COM port you had to remember in the previous step. Hit OK
6)Open Active Sync on your Jam. Choose Tools, Connect Via Bluetooth.

Hope this is helpful!

Arto.

If the PAN setup succesful, then click on the ActiveSync icon in the Bluesoleil "Bluetotth Manager" on the JAM.
I think now you surf the net from the PPC.
Reply if something is worng and you still cannot surf the net

On my computer and Universal, I find it easy to setup BT Active Sync if I activate the setup on the Universal first using active sync app. There is an option within the active sync app to sync via BT. The computer will then recognize the device and will ask you if you want to pair it. On the other hand, if I try to pair them beginning with my computer to search for the Universal, after pairing and ticking all necessary boxes, it still won't sync.
After pairing and ticking all necessary boxes. Make sure you reset BOTH your computer and the Universal.
The problem is that when I pair my Universal to PC, not appear the service "ActiveSync", but "Serial Port".
I've already tried to delete everything and reinstall bluetooth pen, with his drivers and with windows drivers, and ActiveSync too.
I've also deleted all pairs and all port on Universal.
But I've not obtained any result.
I don't know what to make.
Can someone help me?
Please.
Nobody has had my same problem?
Any idea, please?
I had the same problem until I upgraded from Toshiba BT stack to Wildcomm BT Drivers stack (4.0.1.700).
Things I have learned:
- If UNI is connected via USB then AS service will not show in device pairing on PPC.
- You need to create an incoming COM port on PC and set AS to allow connections to this port.

I haven't change the bletooth stack.
Until some week it makes worked regularly, but an evening, I was configuring my Laptop to use the JJ like BT modem, when the AciveSync service has begun not to recognize more like such, but like “Serial Port”.
I've already tried to delete everything and reinstall bluetooth pen, with his drivers and with windows drivers, and ActiveSync too.

But I've not obtained any result.
Yesterday, I have tried the synchronization with an other PC with a fresh installation of windows, but the result has been the same one.
Therefore the problem is on JJ, even in the registry.
I don't know what to make.

Up
Please help me...
Don't know if this will help and I claim no credit because this solution was written in some other threads. For the universal with a Toshiba bluetooth on your PC:
first, pair your Universal with your PC, you get "serial"
On your PC, create the following "bluetooth local com" (Control panel)
- COM7 Toshiba BT Port (COM7) LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort(TOSHIBA LOcalCOM)]
- COM6 Toshiba BT Port (COM6) LocalCOM-Client
In your activesync, allow connection to COM7
Now comes the fun part. On your universal, go to your bluetooth settings, devices, edit your device and press "Refresh", possibly more than once. Serial Port will change to ActiveSync.
It worked for me.
Eric
Also got to the control panel on PC and delete the bluetooth modem that was created. When u add a new incoming port on PC make sure it's not COM8 because that is used by JJ for USB modem connections.
same on treo 750v
I have the exact same problem on my Palm treo 750v. Searched the whole internet for a solution and found some other people with the same problem but no resolution. The only recommendation that seems to work is to do a hard-reset.
The problem started on my device after I played around with the Soft GPS port. It seems that it screwed up some COM port references for good...
I had the same problem on my notebook with Toshiba's BT drivers. I uninstalled them and connected an external USB BT which fired up the MS default BT stack.
After I completed the pairing using Bluetooth Devices (in control panel) and clicking Add in the devices tab, I used the COM Ports tab and added an incoming port and copied the number of this com port in the AS connection settings.
Now, I initiated the AS over BT from the Jasjar and it said something like "it cannot find the service or whatever and would you like to create one". I clicked yes, when it took me to the list of paired devices. From here I did what leblan has also noted "your device and press "Refresh", possibly more than once. Serial Port will change to ActiveSync." I too found that the serial port changed to ActiveSync. The key, IMHO is to hit that "Refresh" button; i.e. once your device and PC are paired and connected, going to the BT devices and editing (press & hold)the device name (the notebook or PC in this case) you will get the services which will initially say serial port, but when you click refresh, it will change to AS.
jj activesync via microsoft bluetooth stack
both from PC and JJ :
delete eventually existing pair between them;
from PC:
if there isn't create a local service COM port. I created COM8 not protected, automatic start;
from PC activesync:
remove flag both for USB and other connections;
from JJ activesync:
try to connect, it ask for pairing, reply yes;
In "mode" flag on turn on bluetooth & make this device visible;
search for new devices, when PC has discovered complete the pairing;
after paired, you can see a serial port and other PC's services;
stay there;
from PC activesync:
now turn flag on other connections setting COM8;
from JJ:
refresh and You can see that serial port begin activesync;
tip OK for close all bluetooth setting windows, You are redirected in activesync.
enjoy start to sync
15hours of crying and knocking the device. i've successfully fixed it...
i did this (credits to google)..
Delete all paired bluetooth devices from PC and from MOBILE.
CAUTION - USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK <--- I used a registry editor for the mobile phone (google for regeditSTG2) and opened the Branch "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth\ActiveSync" There might be a Key with a hex-String like this "0016cxxxxxx" --> delete it. Change the View to display the values in this Registry Branch, then delete the "LastConnected" Value and set the "Initialized" value to "0"
Turn bluetooth OFF>ON
Pair from PC
Confirm on DEVICE (dont need to select anything just enter code and press OK)
Go START->Active Sync->Connect via Bluetooth
Click to collapse
Voilla worked for me..
hope this helps someone else
