Questions about the Danish Orange SPV M1000 - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

I'm newbie, so maybe these questions are silly!
1) Is it possible to change the Danish SPV Orange M1000, so it's behaving like the Qtec 2020?
2) If the answer: "yes" - is it then possible to use my Nokia 3330's SIM (from TDC) in the M1000?
Best Regards

look in the unlock forum if it can be unlocked then you can use any sim in it
also you should be able to update the rom with a qtek2020 rom if you have one

Unlocking Orange M1000
Yes, I have unlocked my Orange M1000 and use a Telmore SIM for GPRS (10 DKR/MB) Orange, however is far cheaper when calling land lines, so I will continue to use that card as well on occasions.
The unlock program works perfectly, it extracts the unlock code from the M1000 and displays it on the PC screen. You then load the new SIM and enter the code when prompted.
This way, you are not changing anything inside the M1000 (using any questionable method) and they should have a hard time denying you warranty if you need it.
I have not yet updated the ROM, I have not found a need. I have loaded a 'fix' to correct the problem about missing alarms (check http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/ppc_cn_overview.html).
Since everything is working close to perfectly, I will wait on the ROM upgrade until I read about something I need..
Congratulations with the M1000, I love it, it is the best device I have ever had.
Regards
Michael

A BIG thanks to you guys - specially Michael for your excellent answer...!!!
It's sounds perfect, so now I'm going for the M1000 instead of the Qtec 2020, and earn lots of money - maybe spend on bluetooth-GPS

Bluetooth GPS
I use TomTom Navigator 2 and the Emtac Bluetooth GPS. Works much better than on my HP IPAQ:
On the Ipaq you need to select the bluetooth device everytime you start Tom Tom.
The 128 MB RAM makes it possible to load the South Scandinavia map, previously on the IPAQ I had to switch between each country.
I feel that the sensitivity of the bluetooth receiver is better on the M1000, I have picked up my GPS mounted in the car from my 2. floor flat on several occasions, this was difficult on the Ipaq.
Do look at more recent versions than the Emtac, it has a pretty short battery life (rated 6 hours), if you walk a big city, a device with a larger battery would be better.

Once again Michael, many thanks for your information.
I'm going to mount the M1000 and GPS together on my motorcycle, so i'm not get lost on my travel to Austria next summer! 8)

Best GPS SW (and wireless hardware) for ITALY

After spending months reading about it here and elsewhere, time has come for me to make a decision and by muy GPS solution.
Before pushing the botton I would like to check one more time with you what is currently the best solution, possibly getting some Italy specific input.
SW:
-my understanding is that the "best" currently on the mkt is tomtom3. Correct?
More specific questions:
-I mostly drive within a city (Milan), it is still the best SW?
-I just got my drivers licence and I would really appreciate if my navigator would know the one way roads and not lead me where I can't go... does tomtom do this?
HW:
-my understand is that the best BT GPS is the navman 4400, if you can get it to work with the XDAII (BT problems etc...)
Is this still the case?
Is this the case in Italy?
-My understanding is that I can still receive calls on my BT headset while I am using it... correct?
Thanks!

I have a Fortuna Clipon GPS, no trouble to use it, both with and without BT tools; moreover autonomy is near 8 hours in BT mode...
I never had problems in Milan, but nobody knows... it depends if our "assessore al traffico" decides to change one way roads during night time...
Anyway TTN3 in my opinion IS the best choice.
ciao
I would recommend TomTom 3.
If youre going for a BT GPS, then I would certainly recommend upgrading to ROM 1.72.
Any Bt GPS should work fine.
I bought mine on eBay for approx 104 euro (incl shipping from singapore). It is a dConnex DC-230 (=rebadged Holus GR-230).
For any GPS WAAS/EGNOS support is expecially helpful in cities. Most / all SiRFII based GPS's have this.
next to this I would recommend a decent carkit, NOT just a holder for your device. Two options here:
XDA2 carkit (as sold by Expansys). Bought mine in germany for 140 euro
MDAII / Qtek2020 carkit. Average price in germany now is 175 euro

Thinking of buying one, need your advice

OK, so I am looking to buy a Jam. I am in the UK and currently carry around an IPAQ with TOMTOM on for the car, a Nokia mobile phone and a Blackberry for my work email.
I've been reading these threads for some time and see there are some problems and no one can get the Blackberry client to work. But it could still save me two of the devices I currently have (phone / tomtom).
Which GPS devices are you using with the Jam and TomTom, are you happy with them and how much were they (in UK)?
Can I use bluetooth headset and bluetooth GPS with TOMTOM at the same time? e.g. if I am driving and tomtom is nagivating me, can I make and receive calls still?
How good is it as a phone? Is sound quality ok? I will be using it for work so can't afford to have something that isn't reliable and will annoy my customers!
Is there anything else coming along in the short term I should wait for instead of getting the Jam?
From your wealth of experience, do you recommend I get one or wait?
Will is work in America? My company is based in Boston and I travel there sometimes so it would need to work out there too.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
I would wait for a similar device that ships with the new Windows Mobile 5. As it stands, there will be no official release of the OS for the Magician :-(
When released in September, the ETEN M600 will be a very good alternative.
(Hope HTC, imate, etc. read these forums!!!)
Just found this: http://www.mobile-review.com/exhibition/computex-2005-smarts-en.shtml
Looks like the R-Ten M600 might be the one I wait for as it has WM 5.0 and WiFi. Unless HTC release a new Magician.
You guys mean ETEN M600 ? But in another thread here they were saying Eten M500 is good enough... ?

Orange SPV M500 - novice questions!!!

hi all,
simple questions i know but i just wanted to make sure of a few things before i go ahead and purchase this!
is the SPV M500 basically the same as the imate jam and Qtek s100 etc??? because i hate all the orange branding crap they put on their phones so will be lookin to put the qtek or imate rom onto the phone asap! will this be possible? i also need to unlock it so i can use a dual sim adapter and use both my o2 and orange sims in it - will the unlock solution for the rest of the magician devices work for the spv m500? has anyone tried?
secondly have people used Tom Tom 5 with this phone? can you report if the devices worked well together and give a stable solution?
thanks and SORRY for the stupid questions!
Tom
svp 500 vs qtec s100
the svp 500 is similar to the qtec s100, but not the s100. The svp 500 is also known as the Qtec S110.
I might be talking under correction here, but I understand the S110 has a new ROM which is not the same as the latest S100.
I don't think there is much difference the 2 phones, other than that your memory is 128 instead of the 64 for std qtec s100s. The outside of the svp has also changed slightly, so has the colour.

This is not true! the Orange M500 is exactly the same as the MDA Compact, Qtek S100, VPA etc. The only thing that is different is the looks. The M500 is somthing less round and is in darkish gray. The Qtek S110 is a Qtek S100 with 128Mb Ram Thats it!
thanks for that rvbcrs,
I did mention the differences which were the same as yours.
For instance, you can not buy the mda compact / vpa compact / ijam or any of the other's stylusses, since they've changed the s110's stylus and it will not fit. I've also been told the the Rom is versioned otherwise, which may be so / not.
It is really the same thing, but what i tried to say is that it is definately improved (only a bit) and like the rom hacks might be different.. those type of things.. but hey, if you've got the same phone you probably know better.
thanks again for your input on this
The vpa compact/orange spv have much better sound quality than jam/mda etc! Also they are only 64mb just different housing!
The vpa compact/orange spv have much better sound quality than jam/mda etc! Also they are only 64mb just different housing!you'll be able to get rid of most of the orange "crap" once you get it.Just go to add/remover programs and remover the orange software that gets rid of the visible things + interface etc
thanks very much for the replies guys!
in general does anyone have any experience of Tom Tom navigator 5 and any of the magician devices? do they work well together? i have heard that tom tom 5 drains the full processor power for the entire time it is running which has led to critical overheating of some devices and the phone functions and for that matter any other functions cant run at the same time due to the work that tom tom 5 puts on the processor!!! is this true?!
thanks,
Tom
i'm running tt5 on my vpa.it works fine.lt does use a great deal of the cpu but you can't use other programs when the navigator is on anyway!no overheatirg problems.tt5 works better than tt3 for me when all patches are applied as l struggled to answer calls on tt3 as it ran so slow but tt5 is better!pm me for more

Orange spv M1000 ?

Hi can anyone tell me Is the M1000 a Himalayan ? or Andes ?
mine was originally on Orange however i upgraded to wm 2005, (wished I hadnt) I am going to go back to a basic 2003se rom will the XDA II be ok ? :?:
WM5 on the M1000 is awesome! Why would you ever want to go back?!
WM5 on SPV M1000
Tried also WM5 on mij SPV M1000. Looked excellent, but.... had great difficulties in connecting my Rikaline BT GPS. Finally I gave up and went back to WM2003SE again. Hope for future improvements so I can upgrade tp WM5 again.
By the way: many thanks to all the people that invest susch a great deal of their time in making the pograms available for digibetes like ME!
And: Enjoy the holidays, and all the best wishes for 2006!
SPV M1000
SPV M1000 = Himalaya. I've just used the Magic Code and it unlocked it perfectly - though I'm still left with some apparently unremovable Orange files.
maybe shortcuts to them are located in
windows\startup
unwanted Orange Files
Rudegar - you're awesome! I found the unwanted files, as you said, in Widows/Start Menu and Settings. Thanks! Stephen.

TomTom 6 & WM5 on Hermes, opinions?

Hello,
I'm running a stock 8525 (ROM v1.34.502.1) with several hacks (works great). I just purchased a Qstarz BT-Q818 and it worked out of the box with Google Maps and even Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006. Neither of these products are fully-capable GPS navigational products.
I've seen questions and comments about TomTom 6, upgrades from 5, work with WM6, etc, - but I'm curious if anyone can share their experiences installing and using TomTom 6 on Windows Mobile 5. I plan to use US maps, but I don't know if the selected country's maps makes a difference to the reliability, ease-of-use, or installation experience. I don't plan to migrate to WM6 for a bit (until I have a real good reason).
Thanks in advance for your opinions!
Well, I can't help you with Tom Tom on WM05 with this phone.
I had my phone for all of 1 phone call, text message and MMS before I went to WM-6.
That said, I've got Tom Tom 6 with the latest (US and Canada) maps on it, and it works great. Mind you, it isn't as fast (overall) as the dedicated Tom Tom units are, but it gets the job done. In fact on the new LVSW it is pretty close to being at the same speed as a GO300. I'm using it with a Visiontac VGPS-700 bluetooth antenna.
Also, I've got a Motorola MPx and used Tom Tom extensively on that. It is running windows mobile 2003 (IIRC). Obviously its way slower than the 8525, but it worked just fine and got me where I needed to go.
The hardest part of the install on either unit is to get Tom Tom to "see" the bluetooth GPS. And, actually on the MPx it is way easier than on the 8525 with WM06.
I know, I know... you wanted experiance with WM05... but thought that this would help at least a bit.
Thank you, this is helpful. If it turns out I'm the last person on the planet still running WM5, then I'll have to upgrade. Basically, my ROM was ok out of the box and I applied my hacks and apps without any trouble, so I haven't considered an upgrade given the stability vs risk + stability considerations.
I run TT6 on WM5 and I love it. I have had zero stability issues and it works great with my HOLUX 236 BT GPS. I also can receive/send email, calls, internet all while it is running in the background with little to no issues. Once and a while, when I am updating traffic (BOSTON,NYC AREA) performance can be a little slow if I'm multitasking. Other than that, it's flawless for me!
Ditto on the good reports - have run tomtom6 for many 10-15 hour drives, never had any issues. The phone integration features of TT6 are handy - being able to call a POI (eg, pizza shop) from TT6 is sometimes useful. Switches seamlessly between calls and the nav screen without dramas. Handles loss of GPS signal or a slightly incorrect map fine.
Er, you may very well be the last person with WM5 , I've got WM6 as well
@ Guy... lol, except for the guy before you who is running it on WM05.
Oh, I forgot to mention, On my Mpx, I could take two calls with Tom Tom running in the background before the phone would lock up and I'd have to soft reset.
With the 8525, I've had a couple of days where I was on the phone, and forgot Tom Tom was running and it ran from the time I went to work until I left... a 10-12 hour day making calls sending sms and mms, some internet searches etc...never locked the phone up.
I ran TT6 on the stock Vodafone UK WM5 ROM and it was ok but every now and then it would lock up and I would have to end the app and start it up again.
I upgraded to WM6 for one reason SPEED, I don't know about your WM5 ROM but mine was slow. I got so fed up of waiting for 2 seconds after I pressed the red button for a call to end. It did my t*ts in.
Anyway, running TT6 on WM6 has been a superior experience so far as it has not locked up once (on Black 2.0/2.5). Only small gripe is that when a call comes in while using TT the HERMES does not return to the TT screen until the call is finished (you can manually switch back to TT).
One thing to watch out for is the Black 2.5 ROM which updates your HERMES device code and therefore requires TT re-activating. Because of this I have reverted to Black 2.0 (which I find better on battery consumption incidently).
HTH.
TT6 on Std UK T-Mob WM5 ROM
I found that TT6 runs OK but I had to turn off the plotting (on screen) of all the POIs to get it to run smoothly. Some people seem to have reported issues with the rate of data access from their MicroSD cards so it's worth getting a good card (NB - lots of issues reported with Sandisk cards). I run TT6, my phone and CamerAware (which warns about cameras better than TT6). I have had the odd lock-up but in the main all works very well and I am able to count on TT6 with my Vario II. BTW - I use the Holux GPSlim240 which is very nice.
I have even got Windows Live Search running at the same time with a GPS plotted position and mapping/Sat view running from a 3G connection - all very impressive to mates if of little in-car use whilst driving!
Regards
