i am in heaven - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

I am in heaven as O2 have provided me with my unlock code for the new XDA 2 within 48 hours and it works fine with my t-mobile sim card (including GPRS). The O2 active screen allows me to access these pages via my t-mobile gprs connection (which i am only paying £10 for 100MB per month)

That#s very interesting... O2 told me that I could unlock my phone for £195 & it would take two weeks to get the code. so who at o2 did you talk to ??? I thinks I need to call 'em back

just spoke to customer services on sat..they charged me standard unlocking fee of £15 ..asked me imei number over phone ..they said it could take 4 weeks..but received call this afternoon with the code..60 seconds later i had a unlocked xda 2..no hassles at all..best thing is i only took out an o2 contract three months ago..free t610 on £15 line rental...and they allowed me to upgrade to the xda2 last week for £350--only extending my contract by three months...wow i am impressed...so i am now using my voice calls using my vodaphone tariff (1000 min for £37a month and my data using t-mobile 100mb for £10 at the same time)

Did you have to pay off your line rental?
Chaps I'm speaking to today won't have it without doing that
& I don't even get a fecking 02 signal where I live!

Can you please clarify something, you pay £10 a month for 100mb of gprs data on T-Mobile. How is this possible as I pay around £25 for 20mb through T-Mobile. If your right I will certainly be calling T-Mobile for a refund.

Landofnod
i doubt tmobile have to have the same prices all over the world as
it have to compeat with companys which different prices in different
countrys

i did not have to pay a penny apart from the £10...i live in London and T-mobile for a few days gave a special promotional gprs tariff - £10 for 100Mb..they then stopped offering it and instead are now offering a special email tariff (100MB for £10 until end of Dec 2003).
The person who dealt with my unlocking request dealt with it in the same way as unlocking any other handset...
Sanjive...if that is the case i must have one of the only o2 xda 2 unlocked...cool..i would sell it on ebay but i am enjoying it too much

Phonefreak
Just to clarify
Did you have to pay your line-rental in full before they unlocked your phone?
They WILL unlock my phone (anyone's) but they insist on my (anyone) paying up the contract at the same time. I can do this but would prefer to just continue to pay monthly.

not at all..i am only on a £15 tariff...

I PAY $10.00 (U.S.A.) FOR UNLIMITED GPRS....ADD ON TO VOICE SERVICE

Phonefreak, from what you say, does that mean everytime you wish to 'surf' you will have to go through the arduous task of swapping SIM cards and once you're finished surfing, swap again back to your voda number? Isn't that a massive pain?
I can't see any reason to unlock my xdaii as yet... wonder if we can unlock it for free...

use my voda sim in the xda for voice (1000min allowance) and use a bluetooth connection to my t68i (with my tmobile sim) for data..no need to swap sim

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE DAT STILL HADA T68i

I went for the xda ii so that I can get out of the PDA+mobile combo... my P800 went to someway to resolve this but unfortunately screen/size/software forced me to abandon it in favour of the xda ii.
Do you not find it cumbersome (granted t68i is small and I'm an owner too! ) to carry two devices?
I am currently looking at the most cost-effective mobile solution as at the moment, my PAYG SIM gives best gprs in terms of cost while my pay monthly gives better voice-call deal. You looked at those SIM card copiers that allows one SIM to hold multiple SIM/numbers? Or a device that allows you to cut  your current SIM to just the SIM chip itself so it fits into a dual-SIM holder the size of one standard SIM hence allowing you to fit two SIMs into the one SIM slot of a mobile. Quite neat.

i wish that one carrier offered me the best data and voice tariff but since i have a good voice tarriff on voda (1000 min for £37) and a good gprs package on t-mobile (100mb for £10) i can live with a xda2 and a t68i..use to carry two phones and a ipaq 5550..so have still reduced one item

[O2 shop] XDA Exec on Data 5 tariff - minimum term cost £162

Here's how:
In the January 06 guide from the O2 shop on page 33 the O2 XDA Exec is listed as free on any business tariff of £45 and above and £99.99 on all other business tariffs (this brochure is freely available from any O2 shop in case the O2 staff don't believe you when you ask for this deal - otherwise, a copy of the relevant page is attached to this message).
The cheapest available business tariff is the standalone Data 5 tariff at £9.40 per month inc VAT (£8 per month ex VAT) which has a minimum term committment of 12 months. Furthermore, if you trade in an old phone when you get the XDA Exec then you will receive a cheque back for £50 within 28 days.
Minimum term cost:
O2 XDA Exec: £99.99
Data 5 tariff (£9.40 x 12 months): £112.80
Trade-in old phone: -£50
Total: £162.79
So for £162.79 you get a Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC with VGA screen/camera/keyboard/bluetooth/wifi/GPRS/3G/GSM mobile. I don't think a deal like this is going to happen again within the next few years
err... don't you have to take out a voice tariff as well as a data tariff?
No you don't, the data tariffs can be taken out as standalone tariffs.
So a good deal as long as you are happy having a phone that can't make voice calls.
Well, you could always use a different SIM card in the phone
Edit: since the phone is supplied unlocked you could even use a SIM card from a different provider.

So, you need to factor in the cost of the voice calls and rental on the other sim anyhow?
Doesn't seem like such a blistering deal then.
@B Biker, its a great deal if you have a contract already (and therefore a SIM card) as your capital cost of the Exec is less than £200 - not bad given the cheapest SIM free deal is £550. But if you want a normal 12 month voice (and perhaps data) contract then you'll need to shop around. Please note that on the Data36 tariff (£15 per month and 36MB of data) voice calls are at the Pay as You rate but for Data 5 you cannot have voice calls at all. And if you're really smart you could buy the Exec on the Data 5 tariff, sell it on eBay for £400 and have a near £200 profit which you can use towards the real phone you want.

The point is that the maximum you would have to pay for the device is £162.79. What SIM card you decide to use with the phone is entirely up to you. It is now possible (with cashback deals) to sign up to a contract which costs nil over the minimum contract period (see http://www.mobileswizard.co.uk/12monthsfree.asp?free=12 for examples). So, if you were to sign up to such a contract, you would be able to use it in the O2 XDA Exec and just keep the original O2 SIM (connected to the Data 5 tariff) safely stored for the next 12 months after which you cancel the contract (since this is the minimum period for which you must remain connected to O2).
I hope that helps to explain why this is such a good deal.
well, I think 99% of the people who read your first post understood why this is a DAMN good deal ...
Yeah I agree. Buy the device for £162 and you have an awesome 3G PDA for a tiny price! 8)
if you ask ( alot) tyou can get voice added to data5 ( 20p pm- no etra line rental)
Do you need to own a company to buy this offfer? The tariffs are refered to as "business". With the previous offer (for 293 punds) the Data 5 tariffs could be taken out without company.

It's truly not a bad deal (£99 price is v.good), but relies on you having an old mobile phone for trade in in the 1st place, and if you use a lot of voicecalls like I do, you've got to go and organise a voice deal somewhere anyhow*, and pay for that. And the data5 tariff, taken by itself, is shockingly bad value.
Personally more than happy to pay £35 a month for 500mins, doubled for 1st 6 months.
But your offer isn't a bad deal by any measure.
* Although those free rental deals look interesting - might go for one of those for my mum. What's the catch - the first one says it's £30 a month from month 13 onwards - what's the minimum period in that deal?

I work for O2 B2B, and one stipulation that is made before we can offer a business deal is that the customer tells us that they work for the business and at least a portion of the calls to be made on the handset are related to the business. So, for example, we could even sell to an employee, as long as they told us they had permission from the owner of the business, and his or her DOB. As you'd imagine, quite a lot of this must be taken on faith.
We've been pulled a few times for hinting to customers to say the right thing too.. "Do you even make the odd work related call, say, if you're running late and need to speak to the boss to let him know"?
Otherwise, we have to pass, and let B2C deal with it.

The point is that if the phone is unlocked, it doesn't really matter how good or bad the data 5 tariff is - you don't have to use the O2 contract with the XDA Exec. You could just store the O2 SIM card away safely, forget about it for 12 months and then cancel the contract after that. Meanwhile, you could use any SIM card you like in the O2 XDA Exec which (after taking into account the amount of line rental paid for the contract) will have only cost you £162.97. In effect, you have bought a SIM free HTC Universal/I-mate Jasjar/Qtek 9000/MDA Pro/XDA Exec/SPV M5000 (whatever you want to call it - the hardware is the same!) for only £162.97.
On the other hand, if you were to choose to get the phone on a £35 per month tariff on a 12 month contract, you would have to pay at least a minimum of £420 for the phone (i.e. 12 x £35) not to mention the cost to buy the phone in the first place (which would be £99.99 anyway since the line rental is less than £45 per month) so you will end up spending £469.99 (assuming you trade-in an old phone for £50 chequeback) over the initial 12 month contract period. Given that it is now possible to sign up to a contract with 12 months free line rental via cashback with ~200 free minutes/texts per month (which I will explain below), this is a false economy.
* Although those free rental deals look interesting - might go for one of those for my mum. What's the catch - the first one says it's £30 a month from month 13 onwards - what's the minimum period in that deal?

The minimum term for those contracts is 12 months (after which you can cancel your contract and get a new one). The way this works is that you send back copies of your bills as you receive them (e.g. after 4 months, 8 months or 12 months of starting the contract - to prove that you are still on the original contract) to the mobile phone retailer who will reimburse you (usually by cheque) to cover the cost of the line rental which you have so far paid to the mobile phone operator.
Thus, if you were to go with the £162.97 deal for the O2 XDA Exec which I originally posted, you could subsequently sign up to a 12 month free rental cash back deal and use the SIM card provided in the XDA Exec. Yes, it's a bit of a hassle, but I think it's worth it to save hundreds of pounds.
I signed up for my Exec just before Christmas in a local O2 shop of a Data36 tarif - I was never asked if this was for a business or not.
I was told at the time that I could make and receive calls but I would be paying 30p / minute everytime I called out. That turned out to be incorrect and after five calls to various parts of O2 they agreed to turn on the call option without the need for a further voice tarif. The calls are also a little cheaper at 25p / minute when I make them.
So I am paying £17 / month for Data36 with option to make calls and texts at cost but also obviously receive calls and texts.
That's not too bad I don't think.
B-Biker, sorry mate I have a different view. My XDA Exec is not a good phone. Its a great PDA/mini tablet with fantastic connectivity but its not really as good as my Nokia 9500 or my older Treo 650 when it comes to phone functionality and call quality/reception. Also I can't get the BT headset volume to increased (tried 3 BT headsets).
I purchased a XDA Exec on the business Data 5 tariff also in early October and I was not asked any questions about usage etc (total price at that time was £293).

Different views are fine, it is christmas after all!
I do find the sound quality easily a match for my last fone, a decent Sony Ericsson, and *much* better than my JAM.
My cheapie (£18 a year or so ago) AMB-02 BT headset is also plenty loud, which ones have you tried?
We can agree that it is a mindblowingly good mini mini laptop thing though...
My understanding of the data tariff only are that you can make voice calls too with them at the rate of 25pence per minutes with nothing bundled ! Text messages at 12pence per minute.
Have a look:

What a cracking deal on my XDA mini s, well happy!!!!

I don't believe it, just went out and got my XDA mini s today after only 4 days of deciding i wanted a new phone in the first place!!.
Liked the look of the mini s, asked a few questions on this forum, looked around at the deals and went into an O2 shop today just to have a look at it.
Saw the mini s and played with it a bit and liked it so said to the salesperson, ok i'll have one.
I said O2 website are doing it for £79.99 which he said fine to (was free on like O2 400 or something, but i was going for a better deal!)
So then i asked if it was in stock which it was, so i says OK i'll have it on data 5 tariff. Couple of umms and arrs and spoke to a colleague and he said Ok we can do that.
So then i put the nail in the coffin, are you doing trade ins. Ummm arrr, i'll just check he says. Comes back, yes we can do a £30 trade in for old phone and charger.
So luckily i'd gone with my original nokia (14 years old with pull out aerial) Made them laugh when i handed it over, and bought back good nostalgic memories for me!
So deal i got was £79.99 - £30 trade in (which will come to me as a cheque) on a £9.40 a month tariff (i don't really use calls much so thats good for me)
SO a years cost for this phone is going to be £162.79, bloody brill !!!!!!!!
Just charging the thing up now, and will play with it later, i'm one happy customer!!
I'll then shove my orange sim in as that the number i use. I've been led to believe that these are already unlocked, but if its not, i'll search the forum for info.
And also get this, just noticed my new O2 mobile number has my birthday date as the last 4 digits. How personalised is that!!!!
Must admit thats the first time i've bought a phone from a shop (always used internet) but thats the best deal and most pleasant purchase i've had in ages!!!!
just picked up my XDA Mini s from O2 this lunchtime on data 5 only.
The assistant looked stunned that i could have it on such a low tariff and without a voice plan, but she rang HQ and they authorised it without problems,
£49.99 with £30 trade in for my archaic Motorola Mr30 !
But by the time you've sent a few txt's and made some calls would it not have been as cheap to go for a tariff with free calls and txt's included?
I pay £20 a month and get 100 xnet mins and 500 txt's as well as 2mb of GPRS.
not really, because i have just also bought a motorola L6 on leisure time plus which includes 1000 off peak minutes and 100 texts per month, and it has 11 months free line rental, so total cost for the year for me is £20!
got to agree with the origional poster as if he had a second tarif, all the bells and whistles could be added to that and forget about that sim altogether , common at 162 per year you cant get any better...
rgds
jim
Phones was already unlocked and works a treat with my orange sim. I like that one as its an easy number (has 1234 in it!) and i've had it for ages. Also i've got it on an orange no monthly charge with 10p a min calls. They dropped that tariff, but as i already had it, they cant force me to change!
I usually have about £3 call charges a month, so basically nothing.
The data tariff O2 sim will probably just go in the box and not get used. After a year i'll just cancel it, or could i turn it into a PAYG to keep the number?
One thing though, as its a data tariff, does that mean i can't make/receive calls on it? When i had that O2 sim in, signal strength was full, but it wouldn't receive or call (just either dropped line, or dead line)
Do i have to register it or something with O2?
Cheers
True, mine too has only data and whilst the signal strength is there it drops any attempt to make a call and the line is dead if you try and call it. I have heard that you can have voice enabled at the PAYG rate. I asked in store and they said i would need to speak to O2 customer services if i wanted this enabling.
I just got the same deal with O2 - The salesman said they are popular phones (funny that). I'll be using my Vodafone SIM in it and maybe swapping back to O2 for the data.
Now to source a big memory card and remove all the O2 branding

Over 38 Meg of roaming for six pounds (only if UK based)

Easy mobile has this offer on until the fifth.
https://www.easymobile.com/selfcare/index.html
Which gets you a twenty one quid credit for a pound, and the sim will work in LOCKED UK T-Mobile phones, and obviously any unlocked ones too. (Easymobile piggybacks on T-mobile).
If you are referred by someone then each of you gets an extra fiver credit.
You can register three times per address - but you need a credit or debit card registered at that address to pay the 3x £1.
Also if you register with quidco...
http://www.quidco.com/easymobile/
and add another pound of credit within 60 days of receiving your sims - they will pay a tenner a sim to your paypal account.
So once you have registered and picked your first number - you use that number to refer you for the other two to get yourself the referral and referred bonus of a fiver to each, each time (so twenty quid).
So potentially for registering for three sims at a pound then with a one pound top up so six quid in total - you are getting £30 back to paypal and £66 in credit and £20 in referral bonuses - so £116 worth.
They charge £3 a meg for data when roaming so almost 36 meg of roaming for six quid (if you use the paypal money to buy credit).
It is a fiver to register for quidco, so the 30 coming back is only really 25, but they only charge you the fiver once you have earned it (and it will get you more that that discount on your next contract too).
None of the links here are referrals that i will get commission on.
However, if you want to get an additional fiver for the first sim you get, you can use my number and each of us will get a fiver (as referrer and referred).
My number is 079624 70969 (which i am only using for data when on holiday in summer).
When you select the bit that says you were referred by a friend - it will not credit you with the referral until a few days later - so dont worry when it does not appear as a credit to you at once.
If you do use the sims for calls they are only really good if you are calling others with the same sim - as it is 3p a min then - and 1p for a text. Xnetwork calls are 15p/min so nothing special.
Good offer if you want to use the data in the UK but while roaming they charge £10p/mb
Mobile Internet Charges whilst roaming
Connecting to the Mobile Internet via:
GPRS will cost just £10 to send/receive 1 Megabyte of Data whilst Roaming.
Dial Up (CSD) will cost the same a Voice call when Roaming.

If it does use t-mob's network, and you have an older locked t-mob handset, it will work as the handset cannot tell the difference between 234-04 or whatever t-mob is and the easymobile identifier. The phone will display t-mobile as the operator logo. Newer phones will have the updated list and may not recognise the sim as t-mobile so will need unlocking.
Same thing happend when virign launched. Some older one2one handsets worked fine, others needed unlocking.

Sorry - I presumed all would work as I put the sim in an old philips savvy from one-2-one (before they were T-mobile) and it worked fine. It also works in my wizard - but it is unlocked from T-mobile so I could not tell.
I had spoken to their customer services on the net to check the 3 quid per meg thing - and they are still saying it is the same for roaming as for here.
Also - the guy I spoke to did not know - but he asked his supervisor. I have a bundle of the free Virgin sims they gave out recently that I can use for roaming - each came with a fiver free and they charge a fiver per meg - but it will be a pain changing every meg. Although in saying that even if it is a tenner a meg, you are still getting a good amount of roaming data for six quid.
Thanks for the tip, wizardragon.
I have an orange pay as you go sim card and for £1 you get a days unlimited browsing (gives no mb limit), so if i am on a journey i use that
I have an Orange PAYG for that too - its just a pity the never offered it with their contracts which I also have (a sim with two lines which I cannot get to access the second line with the wizard).
Its just a pity the midnight to midnight access for a pound does not also cover 3G.
Tmobile themselves are now getting quite good with unlimited net access for about xeven quid - but you are banned from VOIP and using it as a modem, although they are meant to be introducing a package that covers this from a few days ago - although I have not yet checked this.

It looks like all Tmobile phones will work - here is what it says...
Is my handset compatible?
All GSM phones purchased recently will operate on the easyMobile.com network. If you have purchased your phone with any other UK GSM network, you may need to contact your previous Mobile Service Provider to request an unlock code, to allow you to use it with your new easyMobile.com SIM Card. If you have previously used a T-Mobile UK SIM in your phone, it is as simple as removing your old SIM Card & placing your new easyMobile.com SIM Card into the handset. Most 3G handsets are compatible with the easyMobile.com service, however we cannot guarantee this.
We would recommend that you find out if your handset is locked before you join easyMobile.com. The information below should help you to find out if your handset is locked to a Mobile Service Provider, & how you can get it unlocked.

also have you noticed the section in the t&cs that says to enable roaming you need to enable auto-topup to automatically top your credit up when it gets to less than £2
Thanks
Yes - I saw that - I also saw they charge you a tenner if your credit falls below zero and 75p a month if you dont reach a fiver of use in a three month period - but apart from that all seemed well.
tmob web n walk flext is best for me
for £28pm i get unlimited data, and £90 credit for xnet calls, texts+mms 8)
That was the one they started at the start of april - but you cannot use the data through a modem or for VOIP, but for about an extra seven quid i think they almost doubled the allowances - but there was no point in getting ot if you would not use it.
There was meant to be a new one on the first of may that covered VIOP and modem/laptop use, but i have not looked to see what it is.
Incidentally - easymobile have extended that offer to the seventh - but quidco have dropped the commission to eight quid

I don't think so.
Thanks - its a pity - I am likely to be there in summer and I dont think there is an estonian equivalent.
Just checked the easymobile site (unfortunately as their CS have been crap at giving me the setting for my Wizard in a format i can get them to go in)
The offer is now at 30 quid free if you register with three quid - and we both get an extra fiver if you use my number as a referral.
07962470955 or 079624 70969 shown above in the first post.
Its just a pity about the CS - but you can drop them after your credit runs out and I think they are only 20p per min and not rounded up to a minute for incoming when roaming (in europe)!

Does anyone know if this mobile will arrive on the o2 network? They are bringing out the dumb-ass iphone but something decent like the advantage, they dont have a clue.
Nope... T-Mobile Only, and from what I've heard it win't be around from them for much longer. You can still buy one straight-up without a contract from one of the many electronics dealers.
Buy a german one from ebay , but trust only with paypal
Just buy one from ebay and unlock it with the software from Oli.
Beware there are plenty of fake ones ( I bid on 3 before I got one So trust only those with full paypal coverage.
it is available on a £35 p/m contract on O2 from expansys.com for about £320

But be careful about the data tariff - the reason T-mob offered it is because it suits being on unlimited data and they do that (1Gb) for £7.50 / month.
O2 probably can't afford any new devices since they bought the iFone and the necessary WiFi Hotspots to make use of a decent internet connection speed that those of us with the Athena take for granted - Mike
Edit Once - I am with you "apd" the data connection tariffs on O2 are nothing short of a joke, thats why I left them after 10+ years, I won't be going back thats for sure!
Data only tariff?
I have a VERY nice voice tariff from O2 UK - Pay Up Front For Life. Basically gave them £200 about three years ago, and as long as I stay under 50 minutes a month, don't text and don't call non-O2 mobiles, they get no money from me ever again. I've even done phone upgrades every 12 months. No data connection though.
Now I have a super Advantage, I want a data capacity. I'm thinking of putting my voice SIM back in a cheap phone, and getting a new SIM for the Advantage on a data-only tariff. Does anyone know of a nice, cheap data-only SIM-only tariff in the UK? I've had a quick look, but really don't want to be spending £25 a month for a O2 WebMAX SIM.

Is the HD worth buying sim free?

I've been considering buying the HD for sometime now and have been considering buying it sim free for £500 (hopefully due to the proposed VAT drop on Monday) and taking out a sim only contract for either £20/£25 (T-Mobile/O2/Vodafone). I am not fussed by the data packages as I have wifi at work and at home so I can use that instead.
But I have recently seen deals on O2, Orange and vodafone which are tempting but I would have to transfer my number and how easy is that?
I have worked out that if I save £20 every month for two years on a sim only contract I would save £480.
Which would you recommend? Sim Free or contract?
I'm not a big fan of the branding the phone companies do; I really hated the pinky-purple t-mobile slapped on my last phone.
I go my HD from Expansys. So I can choose the contract and company I want (I went again with t-mobile cos I like their data prices) and still get an unbranded HD, whichever provider you go for
Logically, you are better off buying it through contract. However, i bought mine for £500 just because I was impatient. My Polaris was overdue and since the HD was not available directly through O2 and I did not want to wait any longer on missed promises from mobiles.co.uk, I made this move. I wanted to remain on O2 because I like hem and I am a Select customer (don't if it is worth it, but I get 25% discount on accessories). However, I had recently switched my contract to SIM only (700 min + 500 SMS + Web) for only 20. Because I purchased my through third-party, my insurance was deemed null against my new handset, so I cancelled it.
You should not worry about transferring your number; if you buy through mobiles.co.uk, they will deliver the device on whichever SIM is on it. You will then have to obtain the Porting Authorisation Code from your existing provider and the process is straightforward.
To summarise, if you can afford it, I would recommend SIM free; personally, I do not want to be tied up for 18 months. If available, I rather take a 12-month contract and pay the extra rather than a year and half; many handsets can be released during that time and I am waiting for the Omni – it may be the next bigger release for O2 with WM 7.
One thing I like about Orange (after having made sure I got a data bundle), is the fact that if the handset is faulty, they get a new one out to you next day. The courier will come either between 9am-1pm, 1-5pm or 6-10pm. Really good service.
Well if you feel SIM free is too expensive, the trick then is to buy the original HTC handset at a subsidised price with a mobile contract through Expansys. Do this and you can always 'renegotiate' the terms of the contract/tariff with the mobile network directly following delivery of your handset. I did this 6 months ago with an original HTC Diamond, then called T Mobile direct who put me on a combi 30 with free web n walk for £30 to match Oranges data deals at the time. Remember you have a 14 day grace period, use that to your advantage to secure the best deal, but in terms of tariff negotiation, do NOT deal with expansys but the mobile network directly.
Thanks for the advice. What I could do is try and work out a deal with T-Mobile first for a sim only and try and blag a good deal and buy the phone sim free because at the moment I am paying over the odds on my contract.
But carola your O2 sim only deal would be perfect and one thing I notice is that O2 offer the free data blot on with a £20 plan which I think if I talk to T-Mobile might be able to blag a similar deal.
