tool to fix broken bootloader - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

here http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/download/bootloaderfix.zip a tool to fix
a broken bootloader.
use with extreme care, only as a last resort.
This tool depends on specific memory locations for certain roms.
It does verify that it is talking to a known rom. It also does a very
minimalisitc check if the file presented to it resembles a bootloader.
I tested it with 3.16.52, 4.00.10 and 3.04.00 ( the very old ppc2003 rom ).
It should also work with 3.17.03, 3.19.01, 4.00.01 and 4.00.05.
unpack the archive, from the command prompt, in the 'build' directory
run 'pnewbootloader bl515.nb0'.
it should take about 10 seconds.
output should be something like this:
Code:
C:\fix\build>pnewbootloader.exe bl515.nb0
protection found at 8c0d62d8
result: 00000000 00000000
if you get my ce utilities ( http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/tools.html )
you can check the current bootloader version with
Code:
C:\>pmemdump 0x80001880 0x40
80001880: 20 00 00 00 20 72 30 00 ff ff 00 f1 e0 07 1f 00 ... r0.........
80001890: 00 00 00 00 20 20 20 20 56 35 2e 31 35 20 20 20 .... V5.15
800018a0: 20 00 00 00 20 20 42 6f 6f 74 6c 6f 61 64 65 72 ... Bootloader
800018b0: 20 00 00 00 20 57 41 4c 4c 41 42 59 20 00 00 00 ... WALLABY ...

hi,
thanks for taking the time to make this utility. I am about to try it but i'm not sure if i should run it on my xda or on my desktop pc.
Could you please elaborate on how to use it?

Developer-#X2PL
Thanks for the new tool.
Unless I'm mistaken this requires an Active Sync connection ?
I am stuck on Wallaby 5.17 and a corrupted Rom image (My fault) and so can't establish an active sync connection. The only way to recover is to run an SD card restore but I have had no joy with the Wallaby patch to overcome the bootloader's security (Loads to SD card o.k but does not patch the bootloader on startup)
Is there any way of running your bootloader tool from a serial connection using the load and go command ?
Thanks
Richard

this tool runs on your desktop pc,
it requires a working activesync connection.
and also a working windows ce.
it is most useful for people who accidentally selected the same file for bootloader and osimage in xdarit. and are now stuck without a bootloader.
and it provides an easy way to change bootloader for people with a working xda and bootloader 5.17.
richard, sounds like the only way to fix your xda would be to get the patchloader working. does it say something about loading diagnostics, and bootloader detected, patching .... etc?

K2pl
Thanks for reply.
I get no messages at all when entering bootloader with patched SD card. I am wondering if XDArit is actualy writing to the SD card. I have been recieving the succesful write message and had assumed that it had done so but after asking it to write a CE image it confirmed this in about 2 seconds which I'm sure it couldn't have acheived. I have presumed that I wouldn't be able to see this file under windows file explorer even if it had written it is this correct ? I have also tried the 1.4 MB version but this just crashes (Win XP) at the write stage. I have a unix box as well if this program is available for this platform I could try that.
It sounds like sods law to me just two hours after corrupting my image a tool is released that would have allowed me to get out of it if only I had applied it first Oh well such is life.
Any help much appreicated.

Hi Itsme. Is there any link to download the bootloader 5.15.
Appreciate if U can post a link.
Thks.

It is included in the zip file just follow the instructions above. Don't forget if this goes wrong you will have a paper weight so don't do it unless you feel you really need to.
Richard

I think there are many more uses for a romless xda besides weighing on paper. you could also use it as a beercoaster. or it being a nice shine surface might invite you to deposit thin lines of certain powders on it.

xdarit being done writing way to quick is possibly not a good sign, maybe it is writing to the wrong disk?

I guess I'm going to get a chance to try them all whilst I wait for my old laptop to re-load XP (currently Red Hat) in the hope that its simplistic setup might allow the XDArit to function.
Happy sniffing
Richard

YEP 8)
That was the problem although it reported to be writing to the SD card it was actualy writing to my backup drive (No harm done) Once it was on my old laptop there is so little on it that I could quickly see what was going wrong. Anyway thanks for help.

for those who ran into a missing pput.exe.
the http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/download/bootloaderfix.zip is now updated,
and contains pput.exe.
pput.exe is also part of http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/download/itsutils.zip

Well it worked!!!
Thanks so much. My XDA is once again fully operational. I did run into the missing pput.exe error. But once i downloaded this file it worked like a charm.
Only thing is the result line did not show. So i waited quite some time before i just assumed it was done. And it was.
Thanks again XDA-developers.

Many thanks

Itsme
Thanks for help yesterday. As I live in Australia by the time you helped me figure out what was going wrong it was gone Midnight here so having recovered my XDA I went to bed. Got up first thing took a deep breath and ran your bootloaderfix tool and it worked flawlessly
I now have a SD card backup waiting for the next time I mess up
Only problem left is I seem to have one of the units that randomley hard resets itself when you enter the bootloader but thats a small price to pay.
Thanks again to all the Developers this is really great stuff.
Richard

Richjn,
u need turn the phone off before entering the bootloader. if u power it off and enter bootloader, it doesn't hard reset.

Fix Broken Bootloader not working - Can some kind soul pleas

Hi,
I have 4.00.021 on my Asian XDA and decided T-Mobile is not good for me. I now have the well documented can't go back issue and guess what, my bootloader is 5.17 to make the insult even bigger... I tried the fix broken bootloader but get the following error : ... As you will notice I put the tool in c:\binaries as the long directory names were attributed to this problem earlier on. Any idea how I can overcome this riddle? Thanks a zillion in advance.
C:\binaries>pnewbootloader bootloader_v5_15.nb0
'C:\binaries\pput.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
ERROR: ITReadProcessMemory - Unspecified error
Unable to find flash info offset, cannot disable bootloader writeprotect
search and read old threads!
Thanks for your friendly reply. I did exactly as you told reviewed many threads and am none the wiser. The new fix broken bootloader tool gives me the error mentioned below and I could not see a resolution to that. I will try the old XDAwrit + SD Card reader option next but comparatively thats a very risk option as I understand it and hence my reoluctance.
If you know how to make fix broken bootloader work please spare me with a part of your wisdom and just tell me how. Thanks a lot for your help.
read this link http://www.xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2928
if you still cannot make it work, send to me, I will fix it for you
Thanks for your offer for help. I must be the miggest idiot on this forum. I still can't make it work... I read & read & read the link you gave me but I'm still none the wiser. Few issues I am stuck with :
In the thread you mention I see the reference to 'pnewbootloader bl515.nb0'
I do not have bl515.nb0 but I have bootloader_v5_15.nb0 from Jeff's tools and when I use this file I get the following error. My ActiveStink is working.
H:\build>pnewbootloader bootloader_v5_15.nb0
Unable to find flash info offset, cannot disable bootloader writeprotect
Then I want to use the wallaby patch loader option so I refer to the following link but this link is not live any more.
updated version of wallaby patch loader at http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/download/wbt-1.5.tar.gz
What should be my next step? Should I try to fix whatevers wrong with the pnewbootloader or should I hunt down the wallaby patch loader option....
Totally confused. Thanks a lot for your help. Regards
my latest tools don't use 'pput' anymore, so you will encounter less problems
if you use the newest from http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/tools.html
Got it and tried it. Results are the same :
C:\binaries\build>pnewbootloader.exe bootloader_v5_15.nb0
Copying C:\binaries\build\itsutils.dll to WCE:\windows\itsutils.dll
Unable to find flash info offset, cannot disable bootloader writeprotect
Do you think this has anything to do with the protection T-Mobile builds into their ROMs? To re-iterate I have the 4.00.021 on.
Any other ideas? Thanks a lot for all your help. Regards.
Kerem
As per instructions in your text file I tried pmemdump and get the following. Not sure if this is of any help.
C:\binaries\build>pmemdump 0x80001880 0x40

I have the Same error with k_kirt when i try to down from 6.22 to 5.15 , Dont know what to do. Somebody help me.
billgate, please see
http://xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3162
Thanks to the help from friends on this site my problem is resolved. If you have a SD card reader/writer you can use the older version of XDArit to write the Wallaby patch and then bring your bootloader version to 5.15.
good luck.
K_kirk,
Could you please explain in detail?
Where can I find the bootloader 5.15? I have downloaded the file "wallaby-patch-tool.nb2"
What should I do now?
please help me!
This is long. Bear with me. I just did a cut n paste from a txt file I recorded so I wouldn't forget how to do this again.

donpkong,
nice to see a fellow m'sian here.
Anyways, i'm currently on 6.22, downgraded my WM2003 to PPC2002, because of poor battery life and a DEAD vibrator after upgrading.
I"m trying to downgrade my 6.22 to a 5.15 because I have an inkling it's the root of the problems - IE vibrator not working.
Pnewbootloader doesn't work for me - it just says "Unable to find flash info offset, cannot disable bootloader writeprotect" so i guess the only hope is via SD-flashing.
Would like to get a few things clear here.. in a nutshell, what I have to do is :
1) Create Wallaby-diagnostics card
2) Create ROM image + 5.15 bootloader onto another SD card using XDArit options
then
1) Load up with patched diagnostics card (Wallaby)
2) Backup ROM + Bootloader (optional)
3) Select Restore SD
4) Insert SD, restore OS + Bootloader
Is there anything I missed out? I'm desperately wanting my vibration back because it's annoying to miss calls during meetings and stuff like that.
Thanks!
i did not have to downgrade from 6.22 to 5.15 and my vibrator works fine on WM2003. i do not know how to downgrade bootloader or have the need to do so.
What do i got to do if my xda lose bootloader.
Press and hold Power Button then Press Reset. Nothing appear.
@kavin
the same happened to my XDAII.
I would say, once you lose the bootloader and you, probably, don't want to play with JTAG, you can only send it to repair service...
buzz
Thank buzz_lightyear for reply.
But I can't send it because I'm living VietNam.
I give it to someone but they said that Nothing can do.
Oh....my god! I'll lost my xda...>>
Thanks donpkong
This is the amazing thread. Solve my problem that I have looked for solution for a long time. Thanks!!!

1. You connect you device to pc
2. Then you enter into bootloader in you device like this

Continue pressing the two buttons for a few seconds after pressing and releasing the reset button until the bootloader screen appears.

Same old ****
Im not so sure if this is comforting news, but I did the exact same just now, and I have the exact same results. I am stuck on the same place as well.
Should we CID unlock the phone for it to work with other ROMs? or what. the activesync does not recognize the phone, and neither does any other roms.
Anyone?
I cannot say that for 100% but as long as you have the original ROM that came with your device it should be possible to recover. I used the T-Mobile UK shipped rom cos I have MDA Compact III and it went ok. The ID in the ROM mached the one in the device. I might be wrong but that's what I know.
As you could read in the other thread, you're stuck now.
- CID unlocking your phone can't be done without a working phone.
- You can get back a working phone if you have your original rom only.
Please read the other thread and you will find the answers.
fragger believe me I read so many threads already, but it is still confusing! I understand that for example only the original will work. Fine, where do I find my original?? There is a tmobile NL version on the ftp of this site, but when I unzipped it, it had no executable file, and all I had was about 20 files with wierd extensions. How do I use them?
I tried many of the other versions too, but because the activesync does not recognize the phone, none will work so far. I tried a lot of them already, including the original tmobileUK one, and I get the invalid ID crap. Have no idea what to do now! Maybe you would know of anything else I can try.

There is no TMobile rom on this ftp server, only an ExtROM.
As far as I know, there is no TMobile NL rom available. So you can't fix your phone, you have to send it to the repair center.

I stupidly risked loading a new ROM without seeing anyone else's feedback first! (last time I will do that!)
This was the ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=378704
I ran
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320155
then I loaded the ROM
It loaded to 1% then the device reset then continued to 2% and reset again then came up with error 297 "invalid vender id"
and reset again.
I now have
IPL 2.20.0002
SPL 2.28.0000
tri colour display which I have tried to fix using the MTTY program
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=347700
and when I type "ResetDevice" I wind up back at the tricolour
When I plug in the USB it shows in the white/grey strip at the bottom of the screen but I now get errors like
"corrupted image" if I try to load my original ROM
or
"Invalid vender id" from other images
I dont recall the IPL being 2.20.0002 before!
I have tried the rename of the .nbh file on a freshly formatted (FAT32) memory card and boot and saw a "Checking SD" then "certificate not valid" message then back to the tri-colour screen TSoD (tri-color Screen Of Death).
Can anyone help me?
Yours
Leon
I've done some tinkering - I figured, the thing is dead, dead, dead. So... what the h.
Some interesting commands are available at the MTTY screen but I cannot find a reference anywhere to them and the onboard OS help is not helpful.
Cmd>password BsaD5SeoA
Pass.
<snip usual initialisation messages>
Interesting:
Cmd>set g_cKeyCardSecurityLevel = 0
Cmd>ResetDevice
This makes the RUU indicator turn on in the top right of the tri-color screen
And this
Cmd>password BsaD5SeoA
Pass.
<snip usual initialisation messages>
Cmd>set MTTYDownloadImage = 1
Makes the screen go dark like when the Penguin Boot Loader file is transferred
Does anyone have any info on the commands that can be issued to the firmware?
Yours
Leon
Cmd>ruurun 1
Cmd>ResetDevice
Will give RUU in top right corner of Tri-Color

Hi CyZeeK
Sadly, I had already read this and tried each of the ROMs listed in turn.
Incidentally your link is how I determined the command:
"set g_cKeyCardSecurityLevel = 0" - kudos to you mate.
Thanks for responding though

You'll be the 5th person I have heard of with the same problem which seems to be limited to OEM versions of the P3450, a false-positive from the CID unlocker and a "new" p3450 ROM.
Can you tell me what the branding of your mobile is?
The others have
Orange UK (x2)
T-Mobile UK (x1)

I used USPL v 1.0
Okay that's two for two.
1. Which ROM file did you load?
2. Did it fail at 2% reset annd continue to 3% before failing giving a "Image corrupted" error some other error message?
i tried to load the same rom as you did. in general, i had exactly the same situation as you did. too bad that i did not read what you wrote before in the thread about thi rom

Hi VoyajMD
I am really sorry to hear you are in the same boat. We'll work together to cash our paper-weights in to working phones again if at all possible.
I just need to locate an original code signed RUU ROM from Orange and I believe that will get us all back on line. (I say *just* but you know how hard that might be!)
Any chance you could locate your original signed ROM image or get one from Orange Support In France? Are Orange support in France as bad as they are in the UK? (i.e. forget it they wont be helpful)

[Q] Upgrading & HardSPL problems

Hi everyone,
It happened to me a lot of strange things. I tried to upgrade my herald with a rom from Tribulattifather . The first thing I've done is to install Hardspl. I connected my phone lauched the .exe and it gave me an error by 1%. My phone was freezed with a white screen. I waited a long time and shut it down. From this moment it won't restart and I can only access to the rgb menu:
IPL 1.08.0001
SPL 1.08.0001
When I try to re-install the hardspl or the installer recomended in this post it raised an ERROR [300]: INVALID UPDATE TOOL.
For information I haven't got a SD card and I've done all this by USB cable.
Can enyone tell my how to continue?
Thank you very much,
The Aslan
It seems that nobody can help me?

I tried to create a Gold card.
I formated it in FAT32 with a ppc programm installed on an htc TyTn named : storage tools v 2.5.
Did the steps 1-8 sucessfully:

right it's not recognized, i tried that.... on my Dopod C800/Wing/Herald
is this what you did?
1. Plug the MicroSD card to any working windows mobile phone?
2. Sync the working WinMo to PC.
3. do the perl thing psdread, perl typhoonn, psdwrite, and done right?
4. Copy any RRU/MOD/.nbh ROM to the MicroSD and rename it to heraimg.nbh
5. This time what's inside the MicroSD is the heraimg.nbh only
you tried to boot it, ooohhhhh.. it's not working.. just the 3 color screen.
and this the alternative way to solve.
if you downloaded the heradiag.nbh
1. Remove the MicroSD and plug it to card reader, or to your other WinMO.
2. Copy the heradiag.nbh
3. now there are 2 files your heradiag.nbh and your heraimg.nbh
4. plug again your MicroSD to your brick herald/wing/C800.
5. do the bootloader thing
6. there you go, you will be in diagnose mode.
7. select the flash.
8. the rest is yours to understand.
and your done.
--------------
If you successfully unbrick the phone.
download the HardSPL from Tribulattifather.
http://rghost.net/download/1209299/...609840c3c0331d88971/HardSPL (Wing-Herald).zip
extract all files, and read the PDF file, do what exactly it says.
Thank you SmaRkieS for your answer.
I couldn't post a reply while I had no time this two last weeks.
What you said me didn't work. I bought a MicroSd card reader and created a goldcard with a french topic. Worked well but I've an error when he cheks the SD contents, blue bar, red message : Invalid certificate. I tried with revskills and other heraimg.nbh but it's always the same error.
Did you know already this problem? how can I go on?
Best Regards
The Aslan
Remove Hard SPL from bootloader
Hi,
Anyone out there knows if we can remove hardspl from bootloader of Wing. Problem is my mobile displays splash screen, then switch offs by itself. Its been quite some time that I have hardspled it and have been using it. But recently I am facing this issue, so I am trying to move to original RUU and try if it works.
So for that anyone knows if we can remove hardspl from bootloader, because I am only able to enter bootloader. Moreover I tried several original roms from Flash Center as well as through SD card as well, but still be SPL version is 4.70.yang. Anyone knows any other alternative.
Also, if anyone has faced similar problem then kindly advice how you resolved.
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Pankaj
So, after weeks and weeks searching, reading topcis and trying solutions I've finnaly succeed.
If anyone is interested, here are my steps:
First I read a topic were I found a SPL.nbh in a dutch rom, renamed it in HERAIMG.nbh and with my goldcard flashed it. Then I looked for an original french Herald rom: flashed it. I installed Hardspl (before put the three cabs up on the phone). Finally installed the rom of Tribulattifather.
My herald works fine yet.
Thank you for your replies,
Best regards,
The Aslan
Hi The Aslan
i'm having the same problem & same IPL & SPL as yours ,but i'm still stuck in the bootloader for a week & i can't flash any ROM , so can you plz give me IN DETAILS all what you did starting from the GOLD CARD till the ROM you installed .
I need help please it is important.
Best regards,
elnakah
Hi elnakah,
Here are my steps to unbrick the herald:
First download the dutch rom, take the SPL.nbh out and rename it HERAIMG.nbh. Put it on your goldcard with the heradiag. With the heradiag flash it. ( You will have the IPL at 1.08 and the SPL at 4.1)
Then, do a Hardreset; you can see the message who says : format sucessful or something esle and an image with the logo of htc will appear and desappear very quickly and you will return to the bootloader.(With the heradiag you have the possiblity to format your device in FAT you can do it but it's optional and just to be sure)
Flash an ORGINAL default rom
If it works, install correctly the hardspl.
Flash any rom you want
I hope I've helped you,
Regards,
The Aslan
