GPRS..autoconnect to pick up mail - Networking

Hi all..
I have tried to find the answer here already , but is there any way to get the XDA to check emails every XX minutes , and actually make the GPRS connection unattended... so it is checking email automatically at certain intervals......cant seem to get it to autoconnect at regular intervals...
I was under the impression that GPRS could be always on , but that seems impossible , so autoconnect would be the next best thing

WM 2003 4.00.01 and GPRS

Hi,
Maybe its an odd question.....
When I press send&receive on my inbox my XDA connects via GPRS to the internet.
So good so far. Then Pocket outlook has finished, it does not disconnect.
Is there a setting, which I missed, or is it a bug?
Please help.

why is it concerned to be a bug.... i don't see it that way. GPRS is imho an "always on" technology. why should one want to disconnect it.
imho wm2003 uses more of that "push" technology that pushes emails ect from the serve to your pocketpc as soon as they arrive. that for the device has to be connected all the time.....

Well simply because GPRS always on = battery concemption = less talk time.
Also sometimes GPRS always could make u miss a call... if there is any data activity and someone calls u at this moment it will sound like ur phone is either busy or OFF.
So i think u should have the ability to d/c ure GPRS session anytime u want!

aehmmm. are you sure you are right?
imho grps on is made possbile with the same mechanism that makes your gsm connected. so there should be no higher power drain. but i can't test that. it's just what i heard.
and you DEFINETLY get no "engaged" on the other side when you call a pocketpc that has a grps running grps connection. i just tested that again. gprs gets suspended when a call comes in. that's all. (i was d'ling a file when i called myself on the phone - it took some seconds more to get the call through though)

Yeah i agree all that is true but u didnt take into consideration some of the Operator settings.
Here my operator settings for GPRS is that the party calling me while i am downloading a file gets an engaged or sometimes OFF tone.
What ure telling is the way it should be ... but its not the case everywhere!

I think GPRS "Always-On" is how the device was intended to be & finally is almost 2years later! :evil:
To further illustrate GPRS has a ALWAYS been advertised as an "Always-On" service from it's conception. In addition almost all Mobile Phones implimenting GPRS technology have had this "Always-On" connectivity behavior from the beginning. It is simply an embarrassment to Microsoft that this standard function available on Mobile Terminals for over a year of the release of the XDA was finally instituted on this device. So this just appears to be something new to XDA users.
It does not effect your battery life any more than having your radio on.
If data cost is your concern use a CSD dial-up connection for your Inbox operations. There is an option in Inbox to choose which connection to use. The CSD function will act exactly as you are wishing it to. It will only take up to about 2.5 minutes of you talk time. I so far have not noticed a substantial increase in speed during Inbox operation using CSD verse GPRS.
To me I was furious that I had to wait as long as I did for the XDA to act like it's lesser Mobile Phone brothers. Personally the freedom of "Always-On" has changed the way I do business amazingly. The amount of freedom it provides me in giving me an almost "true-real-time" virtual office is incredible.
If data connection is a real tool to you, then you wont be able to live without a dedicated connection. If it is a novelty or cool factor, then you will always be worried about accumulating data costs, but don't worry if data usage is going to be successful for providers they are going to have to re-think their price structures (ala T-Mo unlimited) to eliminate or diminish this concern of customers if they want data services to be adopted by subscribers & simply to justify/recoup their cost to build these data networks. So be patient
if you have a program like messenger running it would have to send some data over GPRS once in awhile not sure how much it would be maybe
it's soo little it dont really matter
but if it's like one MB a week with XDA always on and GPRS always on
it would be pricy

GPRS always on is a good thing, but at leased in Germany it is still very expensive.
So I like to have a option to switch it off.
GPRS monitor is really a cool tool for getting control over the GPRS costs.

As to anwser the above posts about GPRS "always on" be sure that "always on" is used for the devices also that goes into Stand By therefor killing the active connection. Some of the ROMs from o2 and QTEK had this matter solved in the latest upgrades to keep GPRS always ON when device goes into stand by
BUT
What we are discussing here is the ability to d/c when we want! In the QTEK ROM 3.19 the GPRS always on would allow you to stay connected even when the device goes into stand by and also be able to d/c when u want. Also when sending and receiving email the device will connect and d/c as need it.
BUT
this isnt the case in WM2003 where u cant find a d/c button anywhere and that i consider wrong! Also taking into consideration that some countires GPRS is still expensive.
i hope you got my point on this matter - i can assure you its a bug and when talking to someone in the Mobile Division in Microsoft he assured me in an unofficial way that it is a bug...

Sorry to change topics, but it is regarding GPRS. Does anyone have procedures on how to setup the GPRS connection. I loaded WM2003 4.20.1081 (Build 13100) and it seems to work great except no modem connection is setup.

Access To Corperate Network Via RAS dial in ?

Hi All, well hope some one can help, as have no hair left to pull out. Our company has various free phone ras dial in numbers. I am tring to get my xda to dial into these numbers to allow me to be able to access our servers using terminal services, when problem arise. (all legal here, Its my job)
Is this possible using the xda as the os for the procedure ?
If I use the xda in a cradle connected to a laptop then I can dial in no problem and use terminal services fine on the xda, but there seem little point when I have a connected laptop......!!!!! :roll:
What I would like to be able to do is dispose of the laptop and do it all on the xda, has anyone managed or is doing this.
Any ideas would be great, as have ran out of them.

Hey W.C. - Does your company have a public IP address that the Terminal Server is running on? I use the Terminal Services Client through GPRS all the time and it works great. I guess if you have to pay per kb with GPRS then I guess I see why you would want to dial in. I never tried the dial in method. Good luck - Jim

I can't see what your problem is. (you did't mention)
I use that with my dial-in to my company
* Just setup a Cellular Line Connection (not gprs)
* Enter the Phone Number
* Enter your User/Password maybe Domain
and you are in
Maybe you need to modifiy the Linetype setting analog/digital (i.e. v.110 or v.34)
Does your provider support Data Calls on your Phone-Nr.?

Hi Guys, thanks for the help, but still that darn computer system will not let me in. Dials up ok but just keep getting the error message " There was no answer at the number dialed. Varify phone number and try again etc etc etc"
Yet if I use my laptop at the same time, same number all is fine so I now the number and line and username and password and domain are ok.
May need some super glue soon to piece my xda back together again, know any good makes.
Any more ideas ? anybody

Dial-in data call with XDA
Many GSM cullalar carriers who offer GPRS data packages block regular data calls over their network in an effort to push the GPRS stuff.
My carrier in Canada does this which gives me the exact same error you get.
Call your carrier.

Try checking the Proxy Settings tab under your profile. The "This network connects to the Internet" box should be unchecked. This may be why it only works with your computer. :roll:
Update
Contacted O2 and after 5 diffrent numbers and 30 minutes on hold, they are enabeling something their end. This will take 24 hrs, working days only.
Note: Noticed how payment and billing systems work 24/7 365 yet anything that will maybe help you works 9~5 Mon - Fri.... or is it just me.
Will update Monday :roll:
God knows why I thought that an service provider would be able to help, they are good at removing money from my account, but little all else.
Acording to them I have everything enables on my account, yet I stiil am unable to dial up using my company ras connection numbers. Still the same error message as before.
Could really do with checking settings etc with anybody who is able to dial up to their corparate network.

Every time I've seen this it has been because the provider didn't have CSD (Circuit Switched Data) calls enabled. Can you try some other type of dialup modem, such as an ISP, just to be sure it's not your company? I'll bet they didn't really enable CSD.
It may be more than that. I am able to dial up to my company via CSD however my employee collegues using the same RAS service/company etc are unsuccessful.
Recheck the Proxy Settings tab under your profile.
The "This network connects to the Internet" box should be unchecked. This may be why it only works with your computer.
The other solution is to see if your company provides a VPN RAS. Ifso, you can dial up using GPRS. :roll:
I had this problem
Was trying to dail in and sync outlook
never got it working, but i cured the no answer thing by editing the the dailing location info. turned out that it was dailing completely the wrong number. simple stuff but worth checking!

T-Mobile US is nice to allow this and charge air time as if it were a voice call - you get nights and weekends for free data. 7Kpbs is not too bad surfing the net with graphics turned off.

unorthorised GPRS calls

I have now had 2 months of bills and I have noticed a large amount of unothorised GPRS calls always at exactly midnight to the second. They are not regularly every night or same day a week but it is very worrying as I am not connecting the XDA2 to the internet or sending emails at that time of night.
What is happening?? Why is my XDA2 making these calls? I am also getting wierd emails being bounced back to me by companies firewalls that I have never sent, nor have I ever sent emails to them.
Do I have a virus on my XDA? If so it was there from day one as these calls have occured since GPRS activation. How do I get rid of it?
sounds like u got a worm.
maybe ur mail prgram connects evey night to check 4 new emails, an to send some out, you should check that out, its only a guess.
After studying my bills it is not every night that the XDA is connecting, which is why I am confused. But since it has been doing it I have been receiving a huge increase in spam emails.

Check if you have any programs running in task manager that require GPRS access at all. Then check those programs to see if they have any "auto-update" or "scheduled download" features active. If not, try Network Services on 100 from the handset. It's free from the handset, may take a long time to get through but they may be able to track down where the usage is coming from. I doubt it's a worm or a virus, what I think might be happening is:
The XDA (and all pocketPCs, because of some over simplistic design) wakes up at midnight to "roll on" appointments and alarms etc.
Your XDA's mail inbox is set up to connect and check for mail periodically.
Your PC is off overnight.
So the XDA wakes up at midnight, tries to check for mail, can't use internet passthrough, and then dials GPRS.
The spam originating from your email accounts is probably due to you posting on a newsgroup or web forum that allows emails to be scraped, most spammers use these as "from" addresses to try and hide thier identity - I get a lot of them myself, nothing one can do about it really.

GPRS Issues

Ive had my Advantage for two days now, and i have missed 16 calls, even though the phone is on and has full signal, after playing around this afternoon it appears to be if there is a data connection active (GPRS) ie active sync live search maps, remote desktop calls get rejected.
Ive had an JasJar for the past year and never seemed to get the issue with that, and im using the same SIM / Network / Number i was before.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get the phone to pause the data connection so the phone can ring?
Does anyone else have the same issue?

I miss calls all the time, about 70% of my calls fail for some reason or another.
T-Mobile Suck. I never had this much trouble with O2.
I have done experiments where somebody stood next to me calls me, and gets "the number you are calling is not available" while my phone, next to them is turned on with full battery and signal...
Even outgoing calls fail randomly, just says "calling" for ages then stops for no reason.
Ive had not trouble with tmobile since i have been with them (over 18 months) until i got the advantage, ive cloned every single setting i can from my jasjar and still no look, its a shame as looks like im going to have to disable push email!

that is strange, mine one now works perfectly, so when you miss your call, are you on 3.5G( HSDPA ) network or are you on GPRS?

Standard GPRS, it only happens when there is a contasnt data flow if it is just connected and the connection is not being used it calls in fine.
EG if i use remote desktop / terminal services over GPRS then call the advtange at the same time it goes to answer phone, although it does take around 10 seconds before it does though but doesn't ring, like it is looking for a signal/trying to connect.

may i ask is there any reason why you are not using 3G? GPRS tend to have this problem, but 3G won't.

Coverage, my house and my office don't have 3G coverage, else i would be.
i was on o2 b4 n hardly ever had 3g signal n when i did my video calling never worked....since moving 2 t-mobile ive had no problem....my data connection is mon 9 till 6 b it 3.5g, 3g or gprs n i use cortado.com push email service for instant emails.....i still receive calls when connected
using the flext 50 with web n walk
I'm in the US using T-Mobile and GPRS and don't have this problem. I'll try to make it "break" and see if I experience the problem but just never noticed it.
If using GPRS and a call comes at the exact time you are receiving data, your call will go to voice mail or unanswered. Its the way the radio is designed...SOme carriers have been successful at ending the data stream and raising the priority of the voice. But GPRS modem in most phones only allows data or voice not both...but,
If using 3g/utms it should ring on the phone. And allow data and voice at the same time.
Maybe you universal is grabbing the 3g signal and for some reason the 7500 is using gprs.
Wu has also reported this problem with Vodaphone and Hsdpa...

that is very correct, i have just change to T-Mobile yesterday, now my HSDPA works perfectly with voice, when voices comes in, it will switch the network to 3G and allow voices to comes in, data is still connected, just lower the bandwidth. Too bad that this doesn't work on Vodafone

there is no solution, the only thing you can do is swap your operator, or just don't use 3g at all....

GPRS connection doesn't work after being connected for a long time

Hi,
I'm using a Magician with WM2003
I have a GPRS connection setup for with t-mobile using a proxy.
If I'm not connected it works great- I press send/receive for my e-mail it connects and gets my messages just fine.
If I do it again 5 minutes later also fine.
The problem is after a long time the connection is still active, but when I go to do a Send/Receive-
I get an "unable to connect to the incoming mail server" message. All my other internet apps also will not work. If I turn on flight mode and then turn it off (to disconnect from my GPRS connection) and then try the internet again- it will work fine.
I think what triggers this is going into an area with no service. The GPRS connection stays active- and when I try to use it (even when I'm back in an area with service) it won't work.
Any suggestions?

I have this same issue with the htc touch. Not sure what to do about it. I see the keepalivetime but it isn't a hack or a reg edit (that I can tell).

HI guys, having th same problem here with my Hermes. Strange thing is, this has only started to happen over the last few months. I am on T-Mob (UK) as well... Any one have any ideas, because my push email is driving me crazy (drops the connction and cant connect again, this includes the interent as well.

Exactly the same here - issues with push mail and when using messenger have to turn flight mode on and off to reconnect to the service - only been like this for few weeks now - never used to be a problem before
So it looks like T-mob have changed something recently. I have been searching various forums trying to find an answer but no luck. TMob reckon nothing has changed when i called them.
I too have the same problem and I am also on t-mob UK.
I will call Tmob again tomorrow and hopefully get through to someone in their tech dept. I knew it had to be Tmob, I had changed nothing on my handset, but they refused to acknowledge that anyone else had a problem.
I use cingular/att with these issues so it's not just tmobile.

Also the same with my trinity - but not so often
Having spoken to T-Mob UK, the general thinking is they are imposed restrictions on usage for the basic walk and web service. This includes IMessenger and push e-mail (I knew about IM bit not Push Mail!)
The engineer seems to think the connection will be frozen if the network detects
a IM service (the heatbeat of push mail mail looks to be included in this).
Solution: Upgrade to Walk and Web Plus (extra £5) per month.
I have been given a free month to try and see if this solves my issues. I will let you know how it goes.
Now this could be T-mob fobbing me off and trying to get an extra five quid off me, lets wait and see. Any of you guys on the plus service already??

I use the mediamax bundle with cingular/att. I wonder if this is indeed the case. I would need to upgrade to the pda plan, which would be pricey. Mabey that's the case?
Well, I'm afraid it was a nice story that Tmob told me, but it hasn't sorted the problem! I will keep an eye on it over the next few days just in case it takes a few days to set their end, but as of today I still loose connection.
OK, finally got it sorted....! I have GPRS connected all the time now without loosing connection.
Looks like T-mob were telling me the truth. After talking to a T-mobile engineer, he confirms that they now have the network infrastructure to detect and block services that are not covered in certain WnW packages. This went live just over a month ago.
The basic WnW package does not allow Push Email & IM, if detected the network will block your IP. Turning off and on the radio will give you a new IP, so will work again until detected.
For Push Email you will need the WnW plus service. Now the interesting part is if you add on the plus service (a bolt on) it will still not work. You will need to add the package onto your contract not as a bolt on.
Many people have just paid extra for the bolt on but the T-Mob system doesnt recognise this and still blocks Push Mail & IM.
It doesnt cost any extra or change your contract length, its just a different way the customer service people upgrade your account.
Unfortunately the customer service rep that upgraded my account did not know this, but the engineer new straight away.
