Google maps driving mode - Android Head-Units

Hi there,
Is there, or can somebody make, an app that opens the shortcut to Google maps driving mode? The shortcut made by maps doesn't show up on my HU and in this way i hope i can start GM in driving mode.

Google Maps doesn't create the shortcut. The Launcher does.
You are probably using CarWebGuru. That doesn't show additional intents/activities by default.
Long tab the icon, select explore and you get all available launch intents.
It should be very simple to create such a kick-start app. I already created several. I will have a look tonight.
Edit: It seems that this is only possible by specifying a destination. In that case you can't start it directly in Drive mode.

I'm indeed using CWG, my favourite because of its many customization options and it's the best looking. Too bad Google maps and cover art don't work in the main widget.
Tried the long press before but that didn't work. I hope you can make that app. That would make me, and probably other people also, very happy.

There is indeed no icon for Drive mode as Google itself does not support that.
I created an app that starts Google Maps in Drive mode, but that is actually not possible without a destination. So it will not go any farther than this.
see attached:
- apk (only a starter so only 18 Kb)
- launch icon (so you know how to find it) and it is called "StartapsInDriveMode" in the launcher
- screenshot of Maps

Tested it on both my phone and head unit and it works.
Thanks allot.
It briefly shows the full application and then switches to driving mode. This is the same behavior with the shortcut created by maps, so this is normal.
Nice job.
And btw: Google maps note also works in the main widget of CarWebGuru... I hope this stays like this.

Navigation mode without destination set?

For a dedicated GPS unit, whether you have a destination set or not, you can always see a 3D view of your current position. It doesn't seem to be the case for Nexus One. You can only see 3D view under Google Navigation when you are in navigation mode.
Is there anyway to trick Nexus One to run Google Navigation even though you don't have specific destination set?
Maps is also pretty nice, but it's always north-up so it's confusing sometime.
I wanted to see this too, so I made a feature request ticket: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6839
Please star this issue if you want to see it implemented!
Done. Thanks for creating it
Oops, I searched and found out my ticket was a duplicate.

I think the problem is the lack of pre-loaded maps. Since it doesn't have the maps on SD card it downloads your route when you set it. They are probably trying to avoid the need for a constant and reasonably good data connection which would come with downloading map data on the fly.

A few questions after 3 weeks use.

After almost 3 weeks of using X10 I came up with a list of question that I hope some of you may be able to help me find solutions.
1. Regarding making/receiving calls through car speakerss when there is an auxiliary cable plugged into the phone, I can hear the person who I call/who calls me, but they cannot hear me through the phone. Is this true with everyone's phone? Listening to music and then having someone call me while it is plugged in is very annoying as I have to unplug the cable and wait a few seconds for the mic to start working.
2. Is there a way to make a shortcut on desktop for MMS & Data so I don't have to go to menu, settings, wireless controls, mobile networks to switch off 3G (to save on battery..) or any other solution ?
3. Does anyone know if there's a website where you can watch latest nhl highlights, since the phone doesn't support flash.
4. I would like to find an app similar to yellow pages, which will find whatever I need based on my current location using gps and not on the location that I input in the phone for the reasons such as most of the time I won't know my exact adress.
5. Does anyone know if Wisepilot is worth upgrading after a 30 day trial or is maps.brut should be enough for GPS.
6. Does anyone know how much data app like internet radio uses approx. ?
7. There's a function in mediascape for music called playlist, but I don't seem to be able to create my own playlist. The only one that is listed is recently played. Anyone know how to create your own ?
Thanks for your help.
1- yes it is a commone problem people talked about around here
5- i guess google is doing good with updating the maps so its the same stick to maps(till garmin or something like that gets out )
6- this depends on the staion ur listing from what quality of music is it brodcasting, time of use and so on
7- u can add playlist by using media go, u creat a playlist on windows midea player or any other program or by media go, then u refresh media go to find ur playllist and right click there is transfer, then u find it in ur mediascape playlist that is the only way i guess. its fine with me
PS: u can search the other questions im sure u will find the answers coz lots of people have asked the same questions....
1. You need an inline microphone such as http://store.shure.com/store/shure/en_US/DisplayProductDetailsPage/productID.105498400 (I am sure you can find a much cheaper option if you shop around).
2. Yes just long press on the homescreen then choose shortcut and the path that you need.
3. pass
4. If you allow Google to use your location it should do some of what you require otherwise try something like Superpagesmobile http://www.superpages.com/mobile/android
5. As Google maps now has navigation why pay for an application ?
6. It will depend on the bit rate of the station, but roughly 50Mb per hour for a 128k station
7. You can add playlists by using the built in music player app use the App AnyCut to add a shortcut to your homescreen (choose Activity then Music).
My phone came with Wisepilot installed, but I prefer the new Google maps navigation.
Google Nav is only available in the U.S. and the U.K. right now so you might need a third party GPS solution.
There are plenty of widgets available for turning off/on 3G.

Some tips for setting up favourite places in Google Maps for easy navigation...

I was finding it a bit of a struggle working out the best way to add my Google Contacts to the maps so they were organised sensibly and easy to lookup when using maps/navigation on the phone. Since I couldn’t find a step by step guide to piece it all together, I thought I’d post something here as it may be helpful to others muddling through like me.
I didn’t find an easy way to add all my contacts to the map, but then again I don’t think that’s a major problem - after all, I’m not likely to be visiting everyone listed in my address book.
Here’s what worked for me (there are two choices for the first step, depending whether your using the phone or tour desktop):
1. Adding Stars/Favourites To The Map (Phone)
You can add “Stars” to for your Google Contact from the People app on the phone. Select the contact, then "View home/work address", and assuming there's enough detail it will take you to that point on the map. Click on the marker, and you'll get the black Google Map screen which includes a greyed out star just below the clock. Click this and you’ll get a star on added to your map.
Or...
1. Adding Stars/Favourites To The Map (Desktop)
You can add “Stars” to for your Google Contact to Google Maps by going to the contacts page (http://www.google.com/contacts), selecting the contact and clicking the Map link (next to the address). This will bring up the Google Map page with a marker for that particular contact’s address. The address should also be listed at the left-hand side with a bold blue link. Next to that link will be a feint blue star outline. Click this and you’ll get a star on added to your map.
2. Renaming/Removing Favourites (Desktop)
That’s all well and good, but this star may not have the most convenient name. For example, it might be called “142 Main Street, Leicester”, but for the benefit of navigation, you may want to refer to it as “Home”, or “Dave’s House” etc.
To change the description to something more memorable, go to the Google Bookmarks page (https://www.google.com/bookmarks). Here you’ll be able to see all the starred items on your map and more importantly edit or delete them.
(Stared Items can also be viewed from the “My Maps” page from the main Google Maps site - but you can only view/select them, and not actually edit the details here.)
3. Using Your Favourites (Phone)
After synching your phone, when you bring up Google Maps Navigation Icon (i.e. the relatively new Blue Arrow that appeared in the 4.2.0 update) you’ll see all your favourite places, named accordingly under Choose Destination, “Starred Items”.
You can also access them from the main Google Maps App by clicking on the Bookmark icon next to the Start/End destination options that if you select “Directions”.
Hope this helps!
Matt
If you hold down the magnifying glass and say navigate (contact name) it will take you there,

It's all a bit clunky though isn't it? You'd have thought that google would've come up with something at least as good as apple on one of their flagship products!? I got used to using my mrs iphone and it's so intuitive and integrated to add data between maps and contacts and the web.
Not on android. Took me a week to find out how to add a stupid star - which i don't seem to be able to turn off after either and have to have it on my screen. would be good to be able to toggle stars/pins in different layers - ie friends addresses, restaurants etc and to be able to easily integrate between web, maps and contacts.
You'll probably tell me you can - i hope so.

Well you can delete the stars from the bookmarks page (http://www.google.com/bookmarks).
I'm still learning myself, but you're right, it is very clunky. It'd be nice if you could just add a star for the contact to the map with a single click from the phone.
EDIT: You can also delete them using the phone by selecting a star on the map, then deselecting the star in the same way you add it. Whilst you can simply add a star, I can't see a simple way of giving it a sensible name - the one you get always seems to be the first line of the address. It's the renaming bit (Step 2 in my OP) that was the main "missing link" for me, but it's perhaps not quite as clunky as I first thought.
With regards to layers, you can create a map online (My Maps -> Create New Maps) then add/copy places to that map. From the phone, you can then see a specific map by selecting Layers -> More Layers -> My Maps.

Android Wear Newbie - some (probably simple) questions

So... just got me a Huawei watch and while I love the look and feel, I have some issues/questions/hopes that i figure you guys will know
Just for detail, I'm using my watch with a Xperia Z5
1. Is it possible to hide notifications on watch face so that they only appear on swipe up? Failing that, is it possible to at least hide them on the 'deactivated' watch face, only to show when i 'activate it'?
2. When using voice I quite frequently get offline errors, despite being connected according to the phone and main screen - anything I can do here??
Related to this:
How can I stop the phone waking in my pocket when voice does connect? Leads to things happening in my pocket
3. Google Maps
- Can i get Google maps to default to walking?
- Frequently Google maps doesn't navigate properly at all - sticks on recalculating or just fails
- Can I get Google maps voice directions on watch not on phone?
4. I would like to set notifications on my phone to the watch - i've seen this option - but i still want to get the apps I've blocked notifications on the phone... possible?
5. App questions
- Is it possible to hide apps from the list at all? I tried a few of the other launchers but I keep getting Screen Overlay errors so have had to delete...
- Is there a better Agenda app that shows more than just today? (found Agenda Wear but can hardly read anything on that!)
- There seems to be a built in find my phone, but it doesnt work. Downloaded a separate app and it does does - any ideas?
- I seem to have three fitness apps on my writs... Google Fit vs Daily Tracking vs Fitness Tracking - do i need them all? Is one the core in which others are reliant?
- I seem to get a reboot when removing and often adding an app - is this usual?
6. How can I change contacts shown? Seems to be most recent except I alse get the first phonbook entry alphabetically who I rarely contact for some reason
A lot of questions I know - thanks in advance for any insight!!

Hi vaderag, i answer the first question:
Yes, you can set this from:
Phone -> Android wear app -> configuration -> moto 360 (established connection) -> cards preview

Joying 2GB Sofia for a Chevy - LIke it, want to love it

I recently purchased and had professional installed the JY-CL001N2. I like the unit but I feel with the potential it has I could love it. Here are my issues:
1. When I start my vehicle it takes 10 minutes for the GPS to lock. By the time it does, I am almost to my destination. Is there a way to speed that up? I am using GPSLock because once it locks on the signals it, I can tell it what GPS program I want it to open which leads to my second issue.
2. I like using Google Drive. I know that it is Google Maps but with Google Maps you have to select the location or select Drive. Why can't I just select drive. I know where I am going. I just like to use Drive because I can get real time traffic.
3. Since Google Maps does not support speed monitoring I am using Maps Speedometer which I like. It created an overlay on Google Maps and lets me know what my current speed is but I can't get it to open when Google Maps/Drive opens even though I have set it to do so.
4. Is there a way I can set what apps I want to open on startup?
If anyone can offer insight to these issue and/or ways to resolve it, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
