Selling refurbished phones as new phones? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

So my friend and I ordered our Essential phones at the same time. He had a friends and family coupon on his order, and I did not. We both got our orders today, and noticed that HIS phone looked a little odd. The factory screen protector had a lot of bubbles in it, as if it had been placed on a used phone and his screen already had a few micro scratches on it.
Mine on the other hand, was flawless when I took it out of the package. So we're wondering if Essential is sending out refurbished phones to people that used the F&F code to make up some of the cost?

It wouldn't surprise me at all. They tell a person that one can try it out for 15 days -they don't do that - they rent it to you for $35

I would like to share that view as well, the build quality even though is solid it is still not perfect. I have tiny gaps, minute little ones, where the display meets the plastic/titanium body. It is more evident in the white version because it has a white (plastic ???) strip running around the titanium body and the black screen meets this plastic white border and gaps if any are pretty evident. Its not that i have those minute gaps at just one place, it is at couple of places. I will try to get a good photo by evening.

Where was your friends phone shipped from? China or California? Where was yours shipped from?

I’ll compare with mine once it comes. Was it sealed in shrink wrap? And was the paper seal on the box intact?

Yes, it was. Which makes me think that they may be creating new boxes to put the refurbs in so that they look new. I mean, it makes sense. It would be an easy way to go through all of the returned phones.

yes, it would be easy. It is very weird it’s shipping from Pala alto... no company has inventory at their HQ usually! On reddit, they said they’re moving all their inventory to the US, but we’ll see. I get mine tonight. Did you and your buddy compare serial numbers? Is one much higher than the other? I don’t know how we can determine the build date from the SN, though.

I have a same problem, I bought from essential website and got a box with seal, but the inside of the box was broken and many dust.

Guys, I received my Essential Phone PH-1 today evening that was shipped from Palo Alto. I did use the F&F code for my purchase. Opening the box, I did notice a small chip on the bottom right side of phone on the back side. It does appear that the back has been tampered with, perhaps prized open?
Attaching the link to the image here.

Is there a reddit post or one on Android authority for the same topic?
Thanks.

I received mine from Palo Alto today, also used F&F. The plastic screen protector had bubbles, but it seems like everything is okay with my device. Couldn't really find any physical issues, and my SN is bigger than the phone I bought 2 weeks go.

Might be more so how the merchandise is being handled in that location. I would return it and report it to Essential.

To be honest. Probably so. I hate to say it but there were alot of returns and this is a small company. It only makes sense that they wouldn't shy away from doing it.

Hmm... Mine says its shipping from MENLO PARK, CA.. guess i will really check it out when it comes here

Open box != Refurbished.
An open box item can be sold as new.
A refurbished item is something different.

I got mine shipped from Telus (corporate). It was sealed and all but had bubbles too.

Could it be that when F&F code is used, then the company mostly sending out refurb/semi-used phones to customers?
In couple of days I am planning to purchase one from their website using F&F code and hope that the issue of receiving refurb isn't widespread.

Amazon Prime "New" EP-1
I'm wondering the same thing. I just received mine from AP (shipped from Hebron KY along with some other items). It came OEM sealed with shrink-wrap, but I see debris under the back's protection plastic. There are scratches along the Titanium edges/corners, a fairly large edge chip on the SIM slot and the SIM tray is not flush with the edge surface. There is also some kind of gunk between the Ti edge and screen and the top of the phone. I'm not usually hung up on cosmetics, but if this phone was returned earlier due to a defect I don't find until after warranty... I'd essentially (couldn't help myself ) be buying somebody else's problem. When you received your 25% off Xoom from Motorola, is it in brand new condition?

I just received my Xoom from Motorola yesterday (I got the 25% off) but when I opened the outside delivery box, I immediately noticed that the Xoom package box does not have any plastic wrapping on it. I can easily open the lid and see the Xoom in it.
Not only that, the plastic screen protector has finger prints on it. I first thought that someone had opened it and used it but when I turned the Xoom on for the first time, it had a start up screen telling me how to get started so it looks like it has never been used. The battery at that time was at 80%.
I was about to sell it as "being brand new and never opened" so it would sell easier. But after looking at the package and thinking that it has been used, I went ahead and used it so it is no longer brand new. Therefore, I can no longer sell it for a better price.
So what does your package look like when you first received it? Does it have a plastic cover on the outside box? For those who bought it at Best Buy or other retail place, how was the packaging?
From other posts and me looking at the box at BestBuy. The box is not shrink wrapped and there is no tape holding the lid down. Some what of a poor packaging design in my opinion.
Your Xoom was new. The box isn't wrapped at all. You will see prints on the plastic cover because someone handled it and got it all ready for you.

I agree with you on that one. I wonder how many peolpe accidentally dropped theirs when they first opened. Oh well.
My packaging sounds the same as the OP except in addition to the fingerprints, the clear sticker covering on the sides were slightly peeling off the corners with noticeable dust/residue sticking to them.
If you didn't have to go through the whole setup and registration process upon turning the Xoom on then someone else has messed around with it. Other than that it might be that the packagers checked the item before shipping but I highly doubt that. It was indeed very poor packaging for a $800 device. Another rush decision on Motorola's side?!?
I received mine in much the same condition. Box was open, papers and Xoom jostled and out of place. The corner of plastic protecting the screen was peeled up and debris was stuck to the plastic. I didn't notice any fingerprints so I doubt it was a 'used' product, they just did a lousy job with the packaging. You would think that for an $800 device they would have done something fancy.
Thanks, at least I now know that I am no the only one.
Unfortunately, now I cannot sell it as "brand new" since I am now using it. Oh well, the worse that can happen is to sell it at the same price that I paid for it within the next 6 months. At least I get to play with it for the next 6 months while waiting for a better tablet.
Brand new, no smudges or fingerprints.
Box was not sealed with any plastic, however the inside was very organized and the plastic covering the Xoom was fully attached
Box arrived packed in a brown shipping box (standard shipping box -- via FedEx 2 day) packed with large-size bubble wrap.
Yours might not be used but mines came in a bag. I ordered a speaker dock with it and the gel case.

Mine was shrink wrapped.
Got mine from best buy exacly how the op got his.
I got one from best buy on launch and the 25% off model and they both came the same unsealed way. The motorola one came with the box inside a clear bag but still unsealed
Mine came from Moto unsealed, half open, and everything jostled.
They shipped in a box that was too big, and with not enough air bags to secure it. So in transit, the bags shifted, the top of the Xoom box opened, and then contents got shuffled around.
Sounds just like mine. Big letdown to see it dusty, fingerprinted and the plastic peeled up.

Mine came from Moto in a box bigger than needed without padding and the shipping box itself was beat up and crushed. Moto inside was in brand new condition as was the box but the XOOM box was unsealed in a plastic bag. Moto inside looked like it had never been touched.

Bumper arrived, but I think it's a fake.

Hi. I ordered a bumper from an eBay seller. It's arrived and for some reason I think it's a fake. It arrived in an envelope, and feels quite plastic. Is there any real way to determine if it's real or fake? The sellers image was the standard bumper image from the play store but that's pretty much the only picture of the bumper online.

I got mine from the Google Play Store, it looks exactly like yours, yours is an original bumper, not a fake one.
I doesn't look right to me. Especially the usb cutout. Your last picture looks much more sloppy than mine.
If it didn't come in google packaging then it is probably from the same factory as the official ones but not a genuine google case as such
looks legit
compared it to mine (which i don't use) and it looks identical except for the shot of it upside down with the usb side looking frayed. was it used? it's just too wide for me but i like the fact that you can see the back of the device. for now its diztronic tpu for me. how much did you pay?
I paid too much as it was ordered about 2 weeks ago, before anything about the play store ones coming back in to stock was known

it's fake. the replica's have been floating around for the past few weeks and if you ordered it on ebay and the listing didn't state 100% original LG bumper then huge chance its a replica. who cares tho? unless you overpaid of course.

Yeah, I got mine from the playstore and the usb cutout looks different. It's a bigger cutout on yours, mine has a small lip. It would actually make more sense the way yours is cutout though, mine rubs against anything I plug in.
Your usb port looks different than mine.
I think it's safe to assume any bumper outside the play store is fake...
It is real, it matches my official bumper.
Can someone with one from the play store upload a pic of the USB?
Mine is from eBay, however it came unopened in a Google Play box, and looks exactly like that.
Pull the hard plastic ring away from the rubber and see what color it is on the inside. People on the replica pre-order thread are reporting that the fakes are white plastic on the inside and the real ones are grey or black.

Kind of an old thread, but I recently bought a bumper from someone off craigslist before I realized there were fakes out there. However, I think I got lucky. My usb port also looks different with a bigger lip as others have described and I can also confirm that the interior of my plastic is gray. I also noticed after I took off the metallic plastic that the LG logo and some model number info are molded into the black TPU portion of the bumper. Can anyone confirm whether or not the fakes have the LG logo molded in the TPU. I imagine they don't but you never know.
thanks for any help. I would love to know if mine is fake or not. I won't do anything about as it isn't worth the time or money but would be interesting to know if someone went to such efforts to scam me for a few bucks (I only paid 20 and it was supposedly new although the seal at the top of the box had most certainly been opened, which he claimed was only to test it).

Quick poll: Was Your G - Pad's Box Sealed? I Think i Know Why Some Were Not..

Hello Mates..
I have a theory as to why a lot of G Pad 8.3's are being received with "Non-Sealed" boxes...
I believe it's because they made every box with a picture of a *White* G-Pad on the box !
Even though the label does say "Black" or "White" who the Hell reads labels..
Mine was purchased Saturday during the $279.00 sale at BestBuy and the store was busy as heck.. A Samsung rep asked if he could help me, so I told him what I was waiting for.. He grabbed a key and brought up a unit in one of those "Theft-Proof" plastic cases and you could clearly see the box looked like it had already been opened, and someone Half-Assed sealed it back up.. this was visible even in through the Theft-Proof case.
I said " Dude.. first of all I said I wanted a *Black* one you can see on box it's white (the label was not visible..) and second, you can see the box is already open.. Please have someone get me a new unit in Black". Their computer said they had 2 in stock for sale.. No one could find the *Black* ones.. So the Store Mgr got involved and the search was on!
30 minutes later someone finally figured it out and actually LOOKED AT THE TABLET instead of all of us looking at the picture on the box and NOT reading the label which clearly states the color...
Me thinks, That's what Vendors are doing.. peaking in to see what color the units are and not reading the label.
I blame LG for this... you should have used a corresponding colored picture with your Tablets.
UK buyer and mine was missing a security seal.
Didn't realise until i had walked out of store when panic set in. Quickly checked the tablet, box, cables etc and no sign what so ever of use. Checkex box and found no evidence of a previous seal.
Unusual in this day and age
Mine was not sealed. Black in a white pictured box from best buy.
Bought a black on in uk and my box was sealed
None of the ones at Best Buy were sealed when I got mine. When I noticed that the one I picked up wasn't sealed, the guy went back and looked for one that was and couldn't find any. However, he did find a black one that he didn't know they had and brought it out saying, "Hey, didn't you say you'd prefer a black one?", so it worked out for me overall in that sense! Still, it's weird that so few of the boxes are sealed...
I bought mine at bol.com and indeed a white box without a seal...

Got mine from Newegg and it arrived unsealed.
Mine, from Best Buy, was also unsealed.
So those dunces boxed up the tablets with no indication on the outside what color they were? They all had to be opened to check?
Black g pad, white on photo and unsealed, bought from amazon
Inviato dal mio Nexus 4 utilizzando Tapatalk
i bought mine from plaisio stores in greece and i had reserved a unit by telephone. When i went to the store to pick it up the employe brought me an unsealed box and i told him that i wanted a brand new unopened box. He told me that they had opened it because they didnt have a demo tablet and they wanted to show it to the customers. I insisted that i wanted an unopened box and he brought me a brand new sealed box. Only the white units were available at that time
I ordered a black unit through the Newegg eBay store and it was not sealed.
Mine was a pre-order unit from Best Buy and I honestly can't remember if it was sealed. Looking at the box, it doesn't appear to have been sealed.
This was an online order, by the way.

I Dunno...
Checking my box, it Does have a color label next to the serial number.. but at first glance, you focus on the box being "Un-Sealed".. so of course you immediately look at the contents to see if anything is missing or if the unit looks *Used*.. and of course then you are going to see which color G-Pad is in the box.. Most of us don't look at the S/N label.. Some Manufactures put colored squares on their boxes and "x" the square that corresponds to that unit's color.. That's the least LG could have done..
Either way it's a scary thought.. Did LG just "Forget" to seal every unit they shipped to BestBuy & Newwgg ???
Or did BestBuy & Newegg miss not reading the S/N label and cracked every single one open to check color ???
This is a wide spread issue across 2 Major Vendors. New products should ALWAYS be sealed.. What's Up LG ?..
I too have bought 2 units, one will go back obviously, from newegg and best buy and both were unsealed. Looking at the boxes, it doesn't seem at all that there was any kind of seal on these to begin with. I think that's what lg wanted. But why? My T-Mobile g2 was sealed
Sent from my LG-V500 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Newegg. Black. Unsealed. I was a bit concerned, but once I got to the unit, it seemed untouched.
I just looked at the box. There is no seal at all, unless the entire box was shrink wrapped at some point.
It probably differs in other countries because the box is sealed when I bought my G Pad. The sales rep even made me cut the seal.

Screen Coating Issues - Please Check Yours and Post Here!

I've had my phone since Monday and have been noticing these two horizontal lines on my phone screen - one on the top left of the screen and the other bottom right. If I wipe them off they virtually disappear, but if I then put my finger over them they come back straight away. I think these are defects in the coating of the screen so that these regions attract fingerprints/oil etc more than the rest of the screen. Here are some pictures:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/2w6pcsrmm8d4b31/DSC_0416.JPG?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zv68silgavv80q7/DSC_0417.JPG?dl=0
I have been extremely careful with my phone and haven't done anything that should have caused this to happen. Anyone else noticed anything similar?
I had exactly the same issue in exactly the same places! My thoughts were that it was glue from the build process! Anyway I returned it to the store and they gave me a new one!

Wow, good to hear I'm not the only one. The placement of the lines seems to suggest the screen was maybe passed through rollers during manufacture and these damaged the coating.
I too wasn't sure whether the marks were residue or missing parts of the coating. To test this, I applied a few small drops of water to the screen and they bead into nice droplets where the coating is intact, but when I apply water to the affected areas it spreads out along the line, kept in by the coating outside the region. Here's a picture: photo on dropbox
This is pretty conclusive as far as I'm concerned. I hope the online store I bought my phone from is happy to replace it!
Me too! (P.S. Hi Whirlpoolian )
I edited your thread title to try to attract others, hope you don't mind.
I thought I had dropped it on the screen and caused it. But I know I haven't dropped of bumped it on the screen.
So I think for sure this proves it's a flaw. Let's see who else has this, and what we can possibly do about it.
Please post which version of G4 you have so we can see if there are any patterns.
Mine is the 815 from Taiwan. I've wet the screen to highlight where they are on mine.
I've contacted the place I bought mine from to see what they make of it, as I feel this is a manufacturing flaw that should be replaced.

Yep, mine's an 815 from Taiwan too.
Another very easy way to check is to wipe the screen clean and then fog it with your breath. The affected regions show up very clearly.
I've also contacted the place I bought mine from... haven't heard anything back yet, I guess because it's the weekend.
Yeah. I've had it too. But mine is on right top, and right bottom.
I will try to go to LG service center in Monday. Mine in the dual Sim version.
Not seeing it on my H811 from Korea. Tried both the fingerprints and the water drops and couldn't find anything. (For some reason my breath won't fog up the screen - maybe I'm a zombie or something? )
Mine seems flawless. Yay.
Hopefully you guys will be as lucky as I was and get a replacement! If not, you might wanna try seeing if this or something similar works!

Let me know how that goes. T Mobile stores are a ***** to get a phone returned.. Even when the phones are obviously flawed they'll try to warranty exchange it or tell you to pay the 50 dollar restocking fee.

I'm currently trying to convince the seller that it is a production defect so that I can have the phone returned... It's not an easy thing to do in Russia but I will do my best.

Hm, maybe someone should make a list which modells from which reagion are having this problem. I have several G4s here and none has this issue, H815 o2 DE (Germany) batch. This batch was released just around the 8. june, o2 customers in Germany had to wait until then to get the phone, maybe it is only in the first production batch of the G4s.
I just shipped mine back to Clove. Will get a new one sent once they receive it.

Wow. I would totally send that back.
I have a Verizon G4 and the screen is fine. This is probably for the 815 international models

About that grill problem...

... I saw there are a new batch without the peeling grill problem, is there any way to be sure I get one with the new grill? Problem is, I'm travelling from Brazil to Las Vegas next week, and I'm seriously thinking about buying one Essential, but I'm worried if I have any hardware-related problem, like the grill or the ceramic peeling.
If I buy one at Best Buy, can I open the box in front of the seller to check for problems? If so, what signals should I be looking for?
Relax man.... Absolutely no problems here.... build quality is on high level. Someone will always report some **** u know what i mean..
My one from best buy! Get it and enjoy. This device is much more durable then other phones (remember u have 14 days to return you phone back without any problem)

The top grill doesn't peal off it just falls in. Whatever one you get make sure it's solid across the grill. Mine fell in just wiping the device with a microfiber cloth. But it a minor issue and you can get a replacement.

Not sure if I can get a replacement, I'll be in Vegas for one week only, then I'm coming back to Brazil.

Maybe you can try your sim card from Brasil before purshase I think that if it picks up a roaming network in the US it should work in Brazil too. I am from Mexico and bought mine in Houston, TX. My mexican sim worked fine while I was in the US and is working fine now that I am back in Mexico.
You could also look for the band specifications , contact your carrier and see if they support it

Wow! Which color is that?
The black one, the only color that was available at the time he bought it.

Looks chrome on my monitor. Thought it was a skin or something, not that those are available either.
Essential is only offering a repair for this issue, no replacement.

Considering what it takes to open up this phone.
It's a replacement.

That's what I thought, but they said it's a repair and I would have to send in my phone. I said no thanks.
I received a replacement with the new metal mesh grill, the metal mesh grill detached in some areas, the bottom part that attaches to the glass part of the phone, this seems to be a glue/adhesive issue. They did say they where using a different adhesive with the metal mesh grill, from the looks of it, it's not doing a good job.
Got my mesh grill replaced and the new grill has held up well so far (few weeks). The old grill would have already gotten holes. I'm happy!
It's not metal.
I got two phones with the new grill, one come off already and the second one does not look much better. You can see gapps and move the Mesh.
Is here anyone without a case where there is not gap between?
It bothers me a lot that it can look ugly like the first phone.
