About a month ago I randomly got a Final Fantasy app and a flashlight app installed. The only apps I installed that weren't from the play store were Amazon underground, the official pornhub app (for kicks), and a PSX emulator from a 3rd party website (would cost money in Play Store). That PSX emulator is what I suspect. I didn't like the UI and uninstalled it a week ago, yet today I see the same Final Fantasy and flashlight app installed again. I fear some type of trojan adware is stuck on my phone. How would I see what is installing these apps?
edit: it also installed a Solitaire app I forgot to mention
Try malwarebytes in the play store. Their PC version is solid. I have kaspersky for my android devices and it is very good. Gotta pay though! Third party sites won't work ; )
Ive heard of this before... I can't remember the name of the app doing it but some service providers include this somewhat hidden app that installs apps like this. The other case even included Final Fantasy. Look in the Apps settings panel (include system apps) and look for anything sketchy. I wish I could remember the name of it!

People make fun of antivirus apps. Saying they don't work and blah blah blah. I side load apps alot and I mean alot of apps. I use an antivirus for the anti theft and malware and I suggest you get avg ASAP if you plan on side loading apps. But that's in my opinion.
BTW can you share the pornhub app, I would like it for research purposes ?
You have Verizon to thank for this.
The app is called DT Ignite. Its crapware that installs apps when your phone sets up or randomly. Its a system app so make sure its the first thing you freeze.
I did notice that when I set up my phone recently when it updated it changed the name to "Mobile Services Manager" or something similar.

Thanks! I bought my phone off eBay unlocked from U.S. Cellular to use on Verizon, and I didn't think that'd be the culprit given the network change. I've disabled the app now.

Ugh, same thing just happened to me. "Mobile Services Manager" was the culprit
A TitaniumBackup freeze on that trojan VZW app should do the trick and prevent further assaults.

So it's finally out. What do you guys think? Is this the end of Appbrain? I loved appbrain cause I can browse the apps on the website and then just click install from there and it will automatically install on the phone. Now this can do it too!
The biggest upside to this? You can install (after you pay) "in-app" purchase app from the website. e.g. you can install the NBA League Pass from the website directly. Any other features I missed?
This is from Google themselves, not me.
https://market.android.com/
Cool. I like it.
I never really got into appbrain, because it still involved that extra step of opening the application itself.. and blah.. I think, I can't even remember. It just seemed tedious at the time to go onto the computer when it was quicker on my phone.
Then when Google does it, I'm all over it. I have been installing random applications just to install them. Why is this so awesome?!
I played with it for a while now and everything seems to be working well. I guess I can save some space by uninstalling appbrain and use this instead.
sweet jesus!
I'm like'n it...good stuff!
The automatic OTA install is working to my N1 and my Galaxy Tab now, it wasn't earlier this morning.
Works well!
With this new website comes another big change that will happen in the 3rd quarter of this year: NO MORE "LITE" version apps.

That's actually a good thing. You download the "free" application, and then if you decide to unlock it you buy the key from within the app rather than a separate unlocker application, or having the market cluttered with 2 separate versions.
Sounds like a plan!
The in-app purchasing as a general concept I'm not a massive fan off as it has the potential to lead to nickle & diming, primarily for games, but if used responsibly it should be good.
Wow, about time. Glad to see it's finally here.
now all they need to do is let you backup your app data. I dont want to lose my angry birds scores everytime i switch roms and forget to back it up with titamium backup
Well, I don't suppose there's a way for Market Enabler to work on the website?
It lists paid apps from all over the world, but it knows your phone's carrier and will prevent installs if your country does not support it..
I guess it's back to Market Enabler on the phone.
Anyone else having trouble actually buying apps from the website? Installing free apps works like a charm, but trying to purchase and install paid apps doesn't work. I press continue and _nothing_ happens.
running CM7 nightlies and the OTA installs are not working...
According to the website, you need to be logged into GTalk, only my GTalk won't log in. GTalk also appears to be missing from the market, so the problem may be on their end...

Doesn't work for me, it's been years and Android Market still doesn't support Google Apps accounts for Checkout. Although I can login, no devices are listed under "my devices" on market.android.com
I'm running CM7 Nightlies as well, I'm a few behind though, and I'm always logged into GTalk and the OTA's are not working for me either.
It's not working here on MM v.20. I've tried installing several apps but nothing happens on the phone end, the GTalk solution they give also doesn't help. Weird thing is they all show up on my app list as completed when none of them have actually installed.

I'm having the same issue. I'm running CM6.1 kangorama's version and the install says it has worked on the website, but nothing changes on the phone itself.
I'm wondering if it has to do with it being a rooted device without a stock rom?

I'm betting that someone is going to have to create a Web App Store Enabler or something along those lines for this to work on rooted phones or phones without stock ROM's.
I'm new to Android and I am wondering if you all plan to put some sort of antivirus program on your Xoom? Is this needed? If so, which programs are the best?

Yes there are Viruses on Android. Most recently they were able to penetrate the actual Google marketplace. Before that most were found on third party sites which are not recommended to get apps from anyways. Most people dont use an anti virus but I believe this will change unless Google does something to prevent any other viruses from entering the market.
Lookout is a antivirus app that can found in the market. It is from a reputable company in the US. The app will scan your apps and compare to a database of known threats(free version is sufficient). While before the recent events I didnt worry about it either I now use Lookout. Something is better than nothing. But the best defense is common sense. Dont download from third party sites and always check the permissions an app is requesting before installing. A wallpaper app doesnt need access to every part of your phone. If it is asking for excessive permissions try to find another app that completes the same task with less permissions. Hope this helped.
I use lookout on my xoom. It just doesn't do the whole locate thing (a great feature) unless you have cellular service (which I do not) because it uses SMS for that feature

Thanks Droidz,
So it sounds like if I am cautious about which apps I download I should be alright. I tend to only download apps that have been downloaded by a large number of people with good reviews. Hopefully that will keep me safe. But I'll try out Lookout too.

As long as you're not downloading shady apps (esp ones from outside of market) you'll be fine. Antivirus is really not necessary.
Hi all,
I have a Bell Atrix and I always have the blank my apps list issue with any Blur based Gingerbread ROMs. I found that removing the Preset app fixed my problem. So I put a small app together to scan the market database to compare the list of market recognised installed apps to the available apps in the market. Users can then remove apps and the market association in the market database.
If possible, can I please have someone to help me test this app? Also, I'd imagine this app should work with any gingerbread running phones with the same problem.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kstudio.marketfixer
Steps:
1) nandroid backup then start the app
2) Click on Load Market Data (and wait for it to finish)
3) If the app found anything, it will be added to the list
4) Select apps from the list and click on "Del Checked Entry" to delete them
5) Uninstall window will show for the selected apps, click on Uninstall
6) Open the market again, wait a bit and see if the list shows.
Thanks!!
Update1:
I found that Android Market, when starting from scratch (after deleting all the app data), downloads a list of all the apps you have ever associated to your account. If you have ever used TiBu (or the like) to associate apps you shouldn't have associated to the market, and still have the app installed, you will start to have the market problem after wipe.
Update2:
I believe the version 3.5.15 market has made this app obsolete. You can find the download link in the post below
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-google-play-store-apk-3-5-15/
Update3:
Uploaded version 2.0.0, for anyone still wanting to remove market links in the new market.

Worked as stated. Nice to have this feature back. Thank you for your work and sharing.
Glad to hear this is working! cheers!
Ken218, thank you for this app.
After I ran "Load market data," a bunch of apps (meaning way more than I'd like to count) showed in the list, but nothing was checked.
Expected?
If so, how do I identify troublemakers from the list?
This is on a Sprint Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch, running Calkulin's ROM, v2.8.1.
Thank you again.
Holy s***! This works! Thank you!!
There were three apps found, none were checked, so checked them and uninstalled them, market working perfect now! You rock!
Oh and this works on stock ICS 4.0.2 (galaxy nexus gsm) so you can add this to your compatibility list.
Need to sticky this in every device forum.
Thanks again!!
holy sheep **** you are a mad genius this worked for me i have a rooted unlocked motorola photon running rocko rom joker kernel and a fistful of tweaks and my apps are listed again in the market major thanks for this
you will need to manually check every app... I will add a "select all" to the list when I update the app.
Genius........that works perfect on ICS 4.0.3 rooted Iconia 500.
I then reinstall the delete apps.
Thank you so much
I had com.motorola.contacts.preloaded as faulty app. Maybe market acts sensitively when using AT&T-Rom on INT'L Atrix in non-default locale.

On more thing. Is there any way to get the market to stop showing apps from Amazon's AppStore as "Purchased" in the market? There's a few I've gotten from the Free App of the Day that I'd like to purchase on the Android Market but am unable to because it says "Install" instead of "Purchase". When I go to install them it says something like "Cannot install because you haven't purchased it." Thanks again!

That doesn't work. It registers the app as purchased. Same thing happens with cracked apps. If you installed one and upgraded to the latest market, you'll never be able to purchase the app again off the android market.

There is a workaround, but it involves some messing around:
1) Uninstall targetted app
2) Freeze market auto-upater
3) Downgrade your market to 2.2.6, run market
4) search for chosen app (Don't go to my apps, that doesn't seem to work anymore)
5) buy app
6) restore new market...
7) ???????
8) Profit!
Ken you should add some cache feature.
I've deleted apps one by one to find the trobulemaker, but after every uninstall I've had to rescan again - with <10 apps it doesn't take too much time, but if search results can be stored within MarketFixer it'd speed up the whole process
EDIT: Thank You very much, market fixed (at least for a while )

There are a lot of things in my list which are part of my ROM (Keis Air, for example).
There are also many Android Market apps for which a Market Search turns up no hits (Super Froggy and Twidroyd Pro). I guess these apps have been retired....?
At any rate there are probably 4 dozen things in my scanned list, and I'm nervous about whacking them. Any advice, sir?

I'd assume you used TiBu to fix market link? Because components formed part of the ROM (Certificate Installer, Cell broadcast, etc) won't be attached to the market.
I'd say wipe the market and let it rebuild its database first (by starting the market app and let it sync/download all the things automatically).
Like you said, it is possible that some of the apps you have are retired. Also, during my tests, I found some apps where the developer decided to change the package name (xe currency) so the market became broken (doesn't cause the blank market problem though).
In the case of Atrix (and possibly other motorola devices), removing "Preset" is all its needed to fix the market.

Try AirPush detector and see if some app is causing it to happen.
I actually had this happen from the browser. A damn play store "pop up". Surprised the hell out of me. Was also for candy crush. I also have pop ups disabled. I noticed this happen after I defaulted play links to the store. Must somehow disable the check.
Wow these adware companies are getting even more aggressive now a days
Same issue here.
Uninstalled everything except stock Google apps and same thing happening with pop up (candy crush), so I guess whatever is installed can't be uninstalled! Airpush or Ad detector software can't find the culprit either.
This is a huge security issue..... Reporting to Google
Browsers do it too... Doesn't have to be an app. It's a redirect "popup" avoiding standard android popup detection. I found this out by getting one before I defaulted links the play store. I actually got asked one time lol. The security issue would be a redirect to an actual infested page, which the built in popup blocker does block. The problem lies in the call of playstore only through playlink, which really can't cause harm being it can only show you the app, nothing further. Would be nice if fixed... Simply set to ignore non user clicked playlink pushes and implement a touch check.

I thought it was the browser I was using (Next), but problem persists across chrome and boat so I think it's some stealth junk installed in my system.
Google needs to find a fix for this, especially when airpush and ad detector apps can't resolve.
It isn't any stealth junk. Its browsing. Http. Port 80. The interwebs. Ect. Ect. It is not an app. It is not a service. Hence airpush or ad detectors will not detect it. Simply a link.

My Apps is a record of what you have installed before, not what you have installed currently on the device viewing it.
Therefore, if someone were to say, nuke the bloatware from the list (had it ever been installed from the play store), then it would have to be reinstalled manually to make it back on the list.
Auto-updates when getting a new device don't count for the My Apps list I do not think unless new permissions are required, which requires end user interference to install it.

If we are talking about the one on the phone this entire time, then this is all easily explained. When you disable an app, it uninstalls any updates you may have applied beforehand.
