Hello guys,
I have been searching but cannot find the answer, so I guess it is not possible, yet...
The Pixel XL is more than capable of doing everything a Google Home device can do, but yet it can't. In the Google Home app on the phone, you can pair up your devices, but there is no way to say
"OK GOOGLE, turn up the volume on my TV", or whatever. Seems like it should be possible?
BTW, All Sony Android TVs (I have one) are Google Home compatible.
Mark.
I'm with you. Just installed Nest and Phillip Hues light both Home compatible and had the same thought. Let me know what you find out.

I was able to control the light on my Philips hue setup with the google assistant on my Pixel from a different room. I had to set the lights up in the google home app first, of course. As for the Sony TV, I guess mine is waiting for an update that will allow voice control. Right now it doesn't see my Sony TV as a "compatible device" when I try to add it. I can cast to my original chromecast perfectly with google home or assistant.

Ah, so maybe the same is true for me. I can chromecast to my TV but perhaps once an update comes I will be able to do more.
So are you saying that your phone can do all a Google Home device can do?

My app only sees my Chromecast. Do you have the Home device also? Read you have to have device before Pixel will work as voice remote.

As far as I can tell the assistant on the pixel can do everything GH can do. I am able to ask my assistant to set or dim the lights and it works. I have heard you can expand the control you have over your TV with a Logitech Harmony setup but I don't have one yet. The pixel plays music and casts netflix just like the GH device can do but only to my chromecast for now (c'mon Sony!). For the way I use it, it's like having another GH device in my pocket. I did receive my GH device before my pixel by a few days but I am unsure of why having GH before the pixel would make a difference.

Hi
Interesting... so can you get netflix or youtube to chromecast using voice commands? What do you say? Do you have only one Chromecast in your house. I have three, and am not sure it would know what to do with a command to chromecast a movie on a specific app to a specific chromecast device, does it?

Yes but only to my original first gen chromecast. I gave it an easy name (bedroom TV) and added the chromecast through the Google Home app. It was very easy and intuitive. After that I am able to say "Ok Google play Stranger Things on the bedroom TV" and it casts successfully. You can do the same with youtube as far as i know. I don't think auto play works but that may be because I think I have it turned off in my global netflix settings, I'll need to mess with that. I cannot do much with the Google Home while it is playing beside pause and stop. I don't really use the chromecast in my bedroom anyway since I have that TV hooked up to a PC so for me it's kind of worthless. When that Sony update comes I will be able to cast where I actually watch TV and hopefully some more control will be baked in like volume, fast forward/rewind, subtitles toggles or maybe even some tv specific controls like video modes or input selection. Only time will tell. I am also pretty excited to see what Google adds for home automation. I would love to control my tp-link dimmable light bulbs and my wemo wall switches, not to mention the Schlage smart lock I'll be installing today, all of which can be controlled by Alexa.

Ok great, good info. I will experiment a bit tomorrow. Two of my chromecasts area also first gen, but I have never really tried giving voice command, and they are named bedroom, living room, so I should be able to do the same as you... cheers

Before I got my Google Home for Christmas, I used the IFTTT app to control everything from my pixel. Location triggers pretty much suck, but all the voice triggers have so far worked 99% of the time. Not sure how it'll work with what you want for your TV, though. At least not without using something like the Harmony Hub (which I also got and have a HORRIBLE interface, lol).
I'm just not interested in the Home device yet. Have a Nest and Hue lights. I can control both with my Android Wear watch which is good enough for me. Nest app already comes Android Wear compliant. Use Hue Wear app for lights. Loving it so far.

airplay is working on the fire tv including mirror mode using AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waxrain.airplaydmr
I PAID FOR IT and then sideloaded it using root uninstaller on my phone to make a backup
launched app and made no changes to the default settings
it works perfect
note
the bbc iplayer works on my ipad too but you must enable mirror mode before playing a video the video then shows fullscreen
some times you may get audio and a black screen found if I hit home on the fire remote and then select airplay/mirror device again on ipad it plays perfect again
this black screen bug only happens in mirror mode a minor problem(just hit home and start again)
android and apple tv rolled in to one for an extra $4.90
So this is for mirroring your iPhone on the screen through the fire TV or can this mirror an android phone through the fire TV also?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
this is for iPhone/ipad ios airplay to the fire tv
not android screen mirroring
but there are some airplay type apps for music like doubletwist on android that could use this setup to play music/photos etc
but the mirroring is only for ios devices
I like this app. The developer is very responsive if there are any problems. He has fixed 2 seperate issues for me, and usually responds quickly. I had installed this app when I first got my FTV. After a few days I started getting error messages because the app wasnt installed through the Google Play store. I emailed the developer and he fixed that for me within a day.
AirBuddy for Airplay - music
Airbuddy from amazon' android appstore works great for music. Upgraded via inapp purchase - I primarily use it for music only.
How are these apps different than AllCast? I know one can cast an iDevice to your FTV but AllCast can do movies, photos & music right?

Well being able to use your iOS devices and mirror it on your TV can be very handy. (in example show Safari on the TV).
I downloaded (and paid!) the pro version from the app store, extracted the .apk and sidelined the app on the Fire TV. It works, that's really cool!!

I can attest that it works great and installs painlessly from the Amazon FireTV app store. WaxRain has provided great support on the application.
I can attest that this app is awesome. Works flawlessly 99% of time. BTW, jailbreak your ios device and install movie box. Airplay on fire tv is great. MovieBox blows away XBMC in quality and stability.
Do you know if they make a similar app for android phones. I've tried a bunch and none mirror the screen they just send certain things like music and video

Hi,
I use thise http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...plugin-20&creativeASIN=B00L5HQRGS]AirReciever
*notice 180 coins back.
It does pretty much every thing you can mirror your ipad screen and the lag is low enough so you can easely play games such as the walking dead episode 1 & 2.and other action adventure games. (the audio latency is set well below 200ms with no problems using the iPad3) besides Airplay it also supports DMR/DNLB, and if you have a MAC you can use it as a extra screen natively. this can also be done on PC using the bit limited AirParrot. And it's developed for aFTV.
mirroring lag
Does any one know if mirroring is going to be improved? There seems to be a lot of lag for games my kids play. I tried both AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO) and AirReceiver but both lag with sonic transformed, bubble guppies and more

If you go to the app's website, you can download the "AirPinPCSender" app and install it on your Windows box. I have it on my laptop and it works flawlessly to mirror my laptop to FTV
I just purchased both a
Lenovo Pro Yoga 2
and
Macbook Air 13
Trying to decide which I like better.. while the touch screen is cool and being able to use it as a tablet is fun on the Lenovo - I've had enough wireless connectivity issues that it's been frustrating (not sure if it's windows 8.1 or the card in the computer) - but my old HP stays connected flawlessly so I know it's not the wireless.
I rec'd the Air today - so I'll play with that and make my decision. I already bought and apple TV which works well enough, but the AirParrot app can only mirror the image of the PC and leaves a bar around the entire thing - there's some pretty evident lag as well just browsing.
I originally was going to go w/ the Fire TV and just found out about this app you guys are talking about.
So, essentially I can do a Fire TV (and download the app for airplay?) and download the app to make the apple stream to Fire? I can do both Mirror and 2nd screeN?
Thanks!!
Thank you
Thank you for the idea
Anyone know of a way to mirror an android phone on the fire tv without root? I know AllCast beta can, but iirc you need root and I'm trying to to root my work phone.
Hi folks. For those of you who have this app installed could you please let me know how it good it is at Airplaying video clips captured by the IPHONE / IPAD itself? So I'm not referring to online video (such as iplayer / youtube) being sent to the device, instead I'm asking about video's actually taken on the iphone?
I shelled out for AirReceiver app and although it's good for Airplaying photos and web video content, its crap for video clips cpatured from iphone (LOTS of buffering and really slow).
Also a question for WaxRain, if I pourchase the app, how many devices can I install it on? I myself have 3 FireTVs in my house.
Thanks.
Am I right in saying that this does not include cable box pass through. i.e. I cannot use this device to search through by cable channels like I can with Google TV?
Right
Sent from my Nexus 5
Thanks. But darn, that's a big loss IMHO
Personally I use a hdhomerun prime and a windows 7 box with WMC to record TV. Have ServerWMC installed there which allows XBMC to be used as a WMC client for viewing live TV and recorded programs as well. I am already doing this with two FireTVs so doing it on the nexus player will be a no brainer. I don't miss a cable company STB and since the player has googlecast support I finally have everything I need in one box.

Google wants us watching Google "TV" via the Internet: Youtube, Play Movies etc.
Google does not want us watching cable, satellite or OTA TV. Google doesn't make money on advertising or content there.
Same deal with OTA FM radio (despite Android One, which is only for "developing" markets.)

This is not the case at all, and in fact quite the opposite. there is even a tv input framework built into android tv and they were demoing the tv app with a hdhomerun at google i/o
i suspect that they will be working with stb manufacturers to deliver live tv over IP, and we will probably see other hardware shortly with HDMI in.
check out the framework here https://developer.android.com/training/tv/tif/index.html
and showing it off at i/o with the live tv bit

BEST NEWS ALL WEEK.
I'd still like an official Windows Media Center Extender app, but watching live from the HDHomeRun is a huge win.
I'm pretty excited. I think they have cracked the input problem with the new framework. I suspect there will be a slew of network tuners coming to market for android TV.
SiliconDust HDHomeRun VIEW
Just to update this line of thought, SiliconDust released an updated version of their VIEW app on Friday.
This allows you to use their network tuners to view live TV on Android. While they listed official support only for the ADT-1, I've had some luck with my Nexus Player. I suspect the trouble is from the difference in the ADT-1 being ARM based while the Player is x86. You can keep an eye on their development on their Android TV development forum.
For me, it works perfectly from their VIEW app (which shows up in the leanback launcher without needing to go into chainfire's side launcher). The problem arises when trying to go through the TV Input plugin. I can see the channels, and sometimes get sound, but never video and usually a "tune failed" toast.
Particularly relevant to the OP might be that I'm using their Prime tuner which has a CableCard so basically replaces my Comcast STB.
I can cast most things. But Slingbox, Showtime, and Starz are having issues casting to Nexus Player.
The other Chromecasts I have in the house work perfectly fine with these 3 apps. But casting to Nexus Player doesn't work for those apps.
Anyone else having these issues?
Edit: I am using an iPhone 6
I came to post the exact same thing! Showtime and starz both don't cast to nexus player. I tried using different frequencies on wifi and used a USB to ethernet adapter on player until I finally tried the apps to my chromecast with no issues. This is a major bummer! I also noticed that when casting HBO GO voice wasn't in sync with video. Nexus Player is definitely buggy hopefully they push out a bug squashing update soon.
ok. Well at least it's not just me. I posted on google forums as well. Maybe a google employee will see it? Hopefully they know about it.
Are you on android? Don't think it's an OS thing...
I also tried it from starzplay.com to nexus player. That doesn't work either. So I think it is a problem with nexus player casting. Some bug fix is needed.
Funny I have an app that works when casting to a nexus player but not on chromecast. Seems like there is more to the googlecast protocol than I thought. I thought the implementation would be the same on all devices.
Sent from my Nexus 5
I can add casting chrome desktop doesn't work to the Nexus Player either. I get a black screen (just like with showtime app). Again works perfectly fine with chromecast. I hope this gets resolved soon. Another thing I noticed is the HDMI-CEC. I can cast things to the player and it will turn on the player but it doesn't change input if the TV is currently on like the chromecast does.
Devices I've used with same results are Nexus 5 (lollipop), 10(kit kat), and Acer Chromebook 13.
vudu showtime anytime abc all dont work properly, yet android and windows screen mirroring and windows chrome tab casting works much better, i was able to sideload hbogo, maxgo, showtimeanytime, and vudu ....which can all be used with a mouse and keyboard combo like the logitech k400 as long as you have a microusb otg to usb hub
Netflix via Chrome wasn't working for me
I had problems last night getting Netflix to load from my OS X box running Chrome. I clicked the Cast button in Netflix and I just got the spinning/loading icon. I then went to the Chrome Cast Extension, and "no devices found" showed up. When I went to Youtube, the Chrome Cast Extension showed the device.
I haven't tried restarting browser, but just wanted to see if anyone else was having similar issues.
I am also experiencing the same issue with Slingplayer on my iPhone 6. The cast icon appears within the player of the Slingplayer app, and my Nexus Player shows up as the cast device. However, when I select the Nexus Player, I just get an endless spinning/loading icon.
Also having some casting issues!
Previously had a Chromecast and everything I had worked great with it.
With the Nexus Player though, I have two apps that don't even give me the option to cast anymore (Vudu, Disney Movies Anywhere). It is like they don't "see" the Nexus Player as a cast capable device. Every other app I have works fine (Netflix, YouTube, Flixster, Twitch, Google Play Movies, etc).
So is the Googlecast part of the Nexus Player just different enough that apps written specifically for the Chromecast don't work with it or what?

The guy who developed the Videostream app pretty much said exactly what you said. They are not exactly the same. Unfortunate because I bought the Nexus Player for it's casting feature over Wifi AC and it turns out it doesn't work for the main website I want it to work for.
Solving Google Cast to Nexus Player Issue.
HI there,
Issue: the Chrome cast app in the Google Chrome browser no longer 'finds' the Nexus Player (Windows 8.1).
Fix: 1) Unistall the Chrome cast app in the browser.
2) Navigate to your AppDate file in the Windows user folder (view, shown hidden files etc.)
3) Find and delete the Chrome Cast app data.
4) Reinstall the Chrome Cast app in the browser.
Finding the app data in step 3), above can be a chore, as it will depend on your particular Chrome browser's configuration. You may need to go to other Windows or Google forums to learn how to locate the file.
Cheers.
Hey All,
New to Shield, not to Android or TV boxes.
For the past year I've been using the Amazon FireTV. Mostly for YouTube which I connect to my phone and for KODI and various add-ons for it. And before that I got a Chromecast early 2013 when they were first released.
Recently I've been loading the FireTV with emulators and connecting a USB hub, Xbox 360 controller dongle etc got a pain so I decided to buy a Shield.
So far, things I like
- Default TV launcher (I have a sideload launcher for my other apps)
- Play Store
- Game performance
- Design of device and peripherals
Things that bug me...
- No pause/play, rewind, forward buttons on either the gamepad or the remote controller? This thing is marketed as Android TV and coming from a Fire TV, I really miss these. Even my 10+ year old Sky remote has a pause button.
- No context / menu button. Makes using some sideloaded apps a real nightmare. Any workaround?
- I have yet to find a way to open the context menu on KODI to add my favourites.
- Cast functionality on the YouTube app is not as expected. If I open the YouTube for TV app from the launcher, I can view my subscriptions and watch videos and I can use the remote for the on-screen controls. There's no way to queue any videos.
- If I connect my phone's YouTube app to the Shield, the Shield goes to the basic UI my old Chromecast used. I can queue videos on the phone, but I can't use the remote or controller on the Shield to do anything except pause.
- I can't see any value in the remote. It adds nothing extra.
Any tips / suggestions?
Thanks!

Since it's an Android device, you got options. You can usually pair just about any Bluetooth remote. In addition Google made a really neat and minimalistic app called Remote Control that works wonderfully with Android TV (at least that's the case for my Nexus player and Shield TV console). There's also this www.amazon.com/dp/B00M4JYTWA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_5XHvwbH3D7DKJ
Supposedly you can program it to your liking and it has lots of functionality including play/pause and volume controls. There are also controllers with a mouse pad and keyboard built in. Both remotes I suggested have play/pause functions. The Google remote control app doesn't have a mouse, but has a keyboard, a play/pause, select, home, back, and scrolling buttons, of you can opt to use a directional pad with tap to select function, I usually find myself using this remote app over Nvidia controller, it's a free app and very reliable. Personally I like Nvidia's accessory controller concept, but not sure I'd pay $50 for a half baked product when there are so many better universal and all in one remotes out there.

Thanks for the reply.
I have since discovered that X on the gamepad shows the context menu in Kodi and I downloaded Yatse app on my phone which is also nice.
May look into a bluetooth remote.
Never found a workaround for YouTube, but it's only a minor annoyance.
I'm familiar with Google Assistant and absolutely love it on a Google Home, pixel book and pixel 2xl.
It's not so good on the Shield because it won't control my home automation stuff.
The Google video HERE show it's capable of all sorts of things that I can do on the Google Home but they don't work on the Shield.
I have Nvidia software version 6.3
"OK Google" is working.
It can answer questions like "what time is it?" and "what's the weather like?" "who is the prime minister?"
If I ask to "turn on the living room lights" is offers me a YouTube video by The Kinks called 'When I turn off the living room light.'
I think it's supposed to allow voice control whilst watching content too but if I say "pause" it offers me YouTube videos with the word in!
Can anyone help me with this please?
