Man I love this phone after only a few hours.
Till I loaded up my Castle Clash and COC and I'm sadly disappointed .
Its slower than my old device and I don't understand why. The games even stutter a bit when a lot of action is going on.
What's the deal?
I've changed the title because if you're a mobile gamer like myself you may want to get another phone.
I'm pretty sure the Forced encryption has something to do with it. Hoping an update comes soon because this phone is blazing fast.
Please don't tell me CoC lags! I'm going from the G3 and it played worst than my S4! Please don't tell me that! Plays great on the OnePlus One.... Must be the 2K screen killing the frame rates.
Anyone tried playing CoC with encryption off?
I can confirm game lag isn't encryption. I tested block fortress: war before and after decrypting. There was no change. And its not the GPU or screen because antutu benchmark benches higher in GPU than my note 3 did. My guess is lollipop/art issues. But who knows for sure :/
It's lollipop issues. A lot of developers didn't take advantage of the early preview builds. The Adreno 420 shouldn't have any problem pushing COC on a 2K screen

Phew, okay... That's good news to me then! I'm sure that'll get patched up in a future update or something.

Exactly. This thing outperforms the snapdragon 800 pushing 1080p. Basically meaning, all games should actually run noticeably faster than they did on the snapdragon 801 and 800. The 420 is a beast of a GPU.
I already have encryption off.
So basically right now ill have to carry both my phones just to play my games. It's that annoying and I even have ART enabled on my old phone which runs cm11.
I only got 14 days before I can't return this thing.
I'm bummed out.

(Just got this so bear with me) I have encryption on currently and noticed that games that havent been updated yet are a tad slower to load. The games that have updated load instantly. I would just give it a few weeks for the apps to update.
I play CoC and it is smooth as butter on mine. I'm only unlocked and rooted and still have encryption
I play Clash and it's smooth as eggs. It's smoother than my OnePlus One.
There's a thread discussing internal memory and so far it looks like they could be from 3 different manufacturers so performances could be affected by which one you phone is using. To check go to fast boot and it shows in the hardware information on the bottom half of the screen
This worked wonders for me

I have a 10 and that's suppose to be good..
I suppose I'll try this kernel and see what happens.

yeah me too .. so disappointed .. its maybe because the game is not yet optimized and the force encryption has a lot of write speed .
I lag on some waves of Kingdom Rush
Its definitely the lack of optimization yet because the benchmarks show this phone to have better performance than rivals such as the iPhone 6 even with its 2k screen being used in the benchmark. The adreno 420 GPU is a monster of a phone GPU. Seriously impressed with how much power they packed into this thing.

Lol very true. The whole 2k/4k naming scheme is dumb IMO. Why not say 1440p just like we said 1080p and 720p. Its just more marketable

Oneplus actually has a crippling gpu issue. I haven't encountered it myself on my games but if you read the forums there's a lot of people saying they get stutters.
If you want to test it, try dling StabilityTest from the play store and running the cpu + gpu stress test and you will see very good performance and consistent frame stutters like clockwork.

I know im going to get flamed, however I don't understand how we could have such a powerful phone with the slowest 2D and sub-par performance 3D (unless its a TegraZone game)? Yes the phone is super fast, but it has a superior GPU that can't even to 2D well. NVIDIA has said that the low benchmarks are do to the benchmarking software not taking advantage of the tegra's 3D capabilities. Yet they are all based on OpenGL ES. Which is a standard that any GPU made for android should support fully. 2D should have been mastered way before 3D was. Also, to say its the resolution being so high, again this GPU (not quite as powerful as its desktop version) was powering way higher resolutions than that of the Atrix. Also, let's not forget where NVIDIA started, they pretty much made OpenGL what it is today.
I just wanted to get that off my chest. I have the Atrix and love the speed. I just can't get past the fact that my single core captivate with its PowerVR 540 has better performance in 2D and 3D out-of-the-box. Fluid motion across the entire phone.

my understanding is that android is not optimized for dual core cpus as of right now. also correct me if i am wrong but the ui is not gpu accelerated because of the multitude of hardware android has to be compatible with? although things like the stock launcher are hardware accelerated and run quite nicely. (although are incompatible because of our high screen resolution) expect better performance in the coming future. i also have a honeycomb tablet with similar hardware. the ui is all hardware accelerated and it is smooth as can be. i would expect phones will catch up as we get closer to ice-cream sandwich.

Can we see these benchmarks? If you test the phone on smartbench (which uses opengl graphics) the ATRIX scores higher than the sgs2... so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
I don't know what you are talking about. Are you one of those people that still believes the PowerVR 540 does 90m polygons/s???
I don't see any slow down in any game, 3d or 2d and that's pushing way more pixels.
Not in games, but web browsing and scrolling can be awsomelly crappy on the atrix, thats true. And Galaxy on Fire 2, for example, does lag.

Android Software can take advantage of both processing cores, its a matter of if the application supports it.

Are you on 2.3.4?
Also, web browser lag is a software issue. Download dolphin web browser. Theres no lag there.
Yes I am. Yes, I tried opera, dolphin, every single browser you can think of, there definetly is lag. If you cant spot it right on, go to a carrier store and access the same site on your atrix and on the SGS2. Try pocket now, its a heavy website, or stock youtube, or anything you can think of that contains lots of images and videos. The atrix isnt smooth by any standards.

I gotta agree the stock 2.2.2 sucks. I also believed (kinda) the phone was subpar for what it was marketed for.
A week ago, however, flashed 2.3.4 (When Int'l users got some serious love), and coupled with the newest Edgan kernel and Go Launcher Ex, I can tell you the difference is huge.
Maybe you could try that? I apologize beforehand if you already did, but couldn't tell.
Yes it becomes much, much speedier (I did those exact configs, golauncher ex, 2.3.4., OC kernel) but also much buggier. Battery life went to hell, it heated up constantly, and my phone would wake sometimes not recognizing my SIM card and screwing up my widgets.
I took off the OC kernel and left with stock 2.3.4, its still much faster than froyo, and it's, sadly, still behind the SGS2, for example. My comparison with the Galaxy is that it's the only other dual core superphone on Brazil for now.
Given, I didnt notice the difference until I personally compared the two, so i suggest this as a free-time enlightening endeavor to all Atrix owners. A bit depressing tough, but hey, out phone has a fingerprint sensor, the lapdock, and a much greater pixel density (which makes a hell of a lot of difference too, trust me).
If you're on froyo it's an unfair comparison.
Get on gingerbread and we'll talk.
The other phone is always better..... until you actually buy it. Then there's always gonna be a better phone just around the corner.
You can do one of two things
1) return/ sell your Atrix and get the GS2 or 2) stick with the Atrix and stop obsessing over lame benchmark scores. The Atrix is still one of the fastest Android phones on the market.

Ok then, I'm on GB as well. I get 3600 productivity and 2800 gaming on smartbench. I get ~24 hours of battery life (in use). The phone is never hot like it used to get on froyo.
I'm using edgans international kernel on 2.3.4 OrangeFR.
If you don't spend time on your phone, it will have issues. If you search around and are smart, you can run a flawless 2.3.4 atrix that beats GS2 in gaming, and almost matches it in productivity.
Its buttery smooth.
My god you really didnt read anything I wrote...
Im not talking about benching. Im not talking about problems with gaming, and I dont even wanna guess what you mean by "productivity". Im saying that scrolling up and down the same website in both phones side-by-side, the SGS2 wins by a large margin, and that until you've tried it personally, you may not feel any performance issues with ur Atrix.
The only exception to the gaming is Galaxy on Fire 2, which stutters on the Atrix, and I confirmed this on two models. Its a graphically heavy game, but its made for Tegra, and it stutters. Its one software, so Im not blaming this on the phone, just saying... This specific game doesnt even run on the Galaxy, for example...

The productivity benchmark portion of smartbench. Check it out.
I have absolutely no stutter in my dolphin web browser. I'm on the desktop version of youtube right now. Since you have a GS2 in your hands. Take a video comparing them. Make sure you install a fresh copy of cherryblur, redpill, or ninjarom before you compare. Kenn's beta and the OTA are a little buggy and bloated. There's no way that the atrix stutters. If it does, return yours. Mine doesn't.
Its a well known fact that game is gimmicky. Try out backbreaker THD, Riptide, pinball THD, samurai 2 vengeance, guerrilla bob, reckless racing.
Guys, SGS2 has a hardware-accelerated browser! It is bound to be smoother and faster than what we have on Atrix!
Yes my galaxy tab has the same graphics accelerated browser. Its ipad fast lol. Switch to dolphin and its slow again. Samsung are definitely baking gpu acceleration into stock browsers

Hi, I came from the HTC One to the SGS4 mostly because of the faster GPU/CPU. One thing I don't understand is that my HTC One got 46 fps in glbenchmark 2.5 off screen and my SGS4 got 41. Both of them running at 450mhz. Why is it that the HTC One has much better graphics benchmarks than the s4 despite the worse RAM and Chip?

do you notice an actual performance difference? apps like that are good for scaling, but you cant judge performance or level of quality on their results. there is no for sure reason why the one scored better, its probably has more to do with the app vs the phone.

its sense UI vs touchwiz and some games run better on certain hardware. the htc one is not 100% the same.
many games need updating for this phone.
I might install a google edition ROM and see how that goes since it doesnt have any touchwiz bloatware. hopefully that helps a little. Other than that, the battery seems to never drain! much better battery life than the HTC One

Let me say right away that my previous phone was a Nexus 5. I was looking for a bigger phone with a sharp display and good specs mostly for good gaming experience because that's what I do a lot. However, I don't even play right now a graphically demanding game. The game's called King of Thieves. I don't mind the overheating at the back on the phone but stutters and lags are unacceptable. Especially in a game such as this a smooth gaming is very important.
So... how can it be possible that an older Nexus 5 runs this game perfectly fine yet Moto X Style with better specs has trouble? Could it be because of the 2k screen? I'm very disappointed. What about Android M? Can an Android update fix that issue?

I am coming from Moto X 2013. I think it depends on game too. I used to play Injustice Gods among Us without any lag on that phone. But it lags on style where aa Asphalt 8 Runs as butter. Maybe the game is not optimised to work on MM
Oh I see. So some games are optimized and others are not. That's a real bummer for me because I love King of Thieves

Hi Guys, i'm overall happy with my S7 Edge Exynos, but some games have big issues and i'm thinking on sell it and get another phone because i'm not sure this will be fixed. Just want ur feedback on what similar phone could be a good replacement.
thanks for ur opinion.
To my understanding the underlying issues on Games is the Software Optimisation on the Operating System.
Its heavily optimised for battery performance.
There is tweaks and methods to help increase the game response.
But i would imagine in time updates will perfect this, Its better having a device with Insane battery, Than a next Gen Mobile with massive battery drain.
Unfornatually regardless of what games i chuck at this, i have only ever had a couple of stutters and thats because of some heavy background tasks i forgot to close.
Yes been having this problem ever since, it wont be fixed its a kernel and DVFS software issue. A phone made for games that can gane at all...
I actually think the same thing i know G5 is better as it throttles less, iphone is the best phone for gaming, maybe the new P9 is good too, im in the same position
I find this odd as I'm not having any kind of lag or stutter on my Exynos S7E. A lot of people reported this issue on the SD variant though. Did you check if something was eating your RAM?

Yes, especially nfs no limits, as its requirements are higher than every other possible games, but I also see small stutters on Real Racing 3 (starting at 60 fps then decreases to 40), however most saddening stutter occurs in Alto's Adventure as no real source was used for this game, still it stutters after 5 or 6 minutes. I can clearly say that this is nonsense, unless it is a software problem. To be clear about the stutter, it is more like an additional layer of software that also manipulates real time and game time, device tries to draw 60 frames per second, but in real time it takes couple of seconds.
yes too bad, i dont understand why a device almost 3-4 times higher benchmarks it's outperform in real gameplay, por example a P8 runs extremelly well this game a any other one... this disapoint me

Really? it's ur S7 Edge Exynos or Snapdragon, seems to affect only Exynos.
To be honest I'm a little underwhelmed with the gaming speed of the XZ.
I only play one game, its a game in KIK called Galatronvs which is a basic Shootemup.
And to be honest , it is REALLY LAGGY on the XZ compared to the S6......The S6 stays smooth , doesn't judder, doesn't pause, doesn't jump.
All these things happen on the XZ as the game gets busier and there are more bullets and ships on the screen..ultimately i die because its becomes a slide show.
After reading all the articles about the Snapdragon 820 and the Adreno 530 I feel more than a little bit down that my two year old S6 with an Inhouse Mali-T760MP8 outperforms it.
Don't get me wrong, in day to day use it's a dream to use..I don't know what it is about Samsung that their hardware is so good but it translates so badly on software that using the phone feels like work rather than fun, even Swiftkey runs like crap on the Samsung.
I haven't tried any other phones yet, but my friend has just gotten a Google Pixel XL and he's going to let me install Kik and have a 30 minute game next week.
If it lags as well, I'd have to say either the Adreno 530 isn't all that good, or the game is terribly optimised.
Either way , at the moment I'm underwhelmed by my Platinum flagship phone gaming experience.

I really only play the one game called Galatronvs via the instant messaging app KIK.
my phone is unlocked, rooted and still on MM 39.0.A.3.30 because i want to still use Xposed Framework.
I don't use any stamina settings at all , they are always turned off, nor do i use any power saving apps such as greenify.
I don't even use a kernal control program that will let you route more processes into a single core thus saving battery.
Bluntly put, the phone is running at full speed with no power saving.
I would imagine unless you've moved from a different phone to your XZ and play the same games you wouldn't notice the difference..Also it would very much depend on the kind of game.
Any game thats not already pushing the old phone isn't going to show any difference on the XZ is it.
Galatron is an upwards scrolling shootemup that gets increasingly more difficult, more bullets , more ships ...thats when you notice the difference ..only when it really starts to get busy.
So i dunno, Guess I'll have more of an idea when i try the Pixel XL with the 821 and the Adreno 530...Though technically the 821 isn't supposed to impact gaming, just multitasking , better power usage etc.
I'll be spewin bickies if its much better , I really don't want the Pixel..it's a little too small and the XL is a little too big  ... And i hate using a phone without Xposed which i can't do with N

I compared the games with mate 9 for example,i think it is more fluid than mate 9. I ONLY use for games android N ,because android N on xz is much better than M in overall (battery and performace in particular). I think your version of firmware is the less optimized and old. What do you use xposed in particular? I have z2 and there i use often xposed. But on xz i stay so good with android n and latest firmware. And i don't care actually for root and xposed. Is fully stock.
I think you might be experiencing the same thing as me. This happens on all of the Xperia devices I've owned (Z2 Tablet, Z3, Z3C, and Z5.). My XZ is on order, and I'll be sure to test this again. Yes, benchmarks have about the same high scores as all the other flagships, but 3D games stutters on Xperia devices. I think most users are not able to notice it. Hardcore FPS PC gamers like myself would notice this easily.
Here's a thread I created on the Z3 forums a while back: https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/help/stuttering-games-t2949670 . There's a video in there with my Z3 and LG G2 playing Riptide GP 2.
I just learned to live it with since gaming is not my priority on my phone, and because I don't like all the other phones.
Honestly I'm not a hardcore gamer, I only play the one game Galatronvs via the KIK APP, it's basically a BOT game which is a downwardly scrolling shootemup... However you do compete online against other players.
And I've confirmed it's definitely a heat issue.
Sadly Sony were supposed to have solved their heating issues with the release of the snapdragon 20...but they haven't.
I can actively connect the lagginess of the game directly with the heat of the phone, the ambient heat of the room, and that you can feel the phone getting hotter and hotter in direct relation to how laggy it gets.
I've even been in the middle of a laggy game with the phone feeling very hot and deliberately moved in front of an air cooler with the back of the phone directly in the path of the cool air and had the lagging start to recede as the phone cools down.
I was given an opportunity to try a pixel xl on the same game in an air conditioned room and they were similar.
Then I went outside in the summer heat and the pixel stayed smooth, the Sony rapidly heated up and started to lag.
When you exit the game the Sony stays laggy for about 6 to 7 seconds.. I imagine this is as it cools down.
I love Sony phones, I love that they stick with standard HD screens for good battery life.
I love that they stick with the 5.2" screen... I don't have huge hands.
SwiftKey seems to work better on a Sony than on a Samsung definitely that's for sure.
Though to be honest I am always a little let down by Sony's cameras on their own phones.. It's like they make better lenses for everybody else.
The Samsung will focus INSTANTLY on something small and upclose... Like say... A windows 7 sticker (I'm a computer tech)... Whereas I have quite a lot of difficulty getting the Sony to focus up close.
I've just ordered a oneplus 3t which I'll root and put similar xposed framework modules and compare it to the XZ.
I'll update this for anybody that's interested.
let me say something about these issues...i had xperias before and now i own XZ wich i thought that it wouldnt have overheating problems like on the z5 but it still has some wierd isuues...for example:i ran a game and even when it got hot it worked smoothly and i was surprised and i sad well done sony or Qualcom LOL...so i was feeling happy and after 2 or 3 weeks of usage i get random lags even if the phone is just a little bit warm with no intence gaming yet but somehow the phone works good when its hot but lags when its cooler...this is so wierd...i dont know anymore whats going on with there phones but im seriously thinking of not buying xperia phones again...a guy at waranty sad to me that this is not overheating but its just heating and its up to sony and not them OMG.... i was so angry when he replied me in that way, that i was in the mood to hit that guy strait on the nose really.these phones are not cheap and im not letting them making me a fool.but at the end they will get me back becouse im a Sony fan and also love there design language...sick bastards
Even though I'm a huge nerd, I really did avoid smart phones.. Or even mobile phones for a long long time.. I hated the idea that somebody could contact me no matter where I was.. I didn't get my first smartphone till March 2012.
That was the Samsung Galaxy nexus now more commonly known as the Google nexus.
After that I got an LG G2 and a week later I bought a Sony Z1... And the very first thing I noticed was that even though the LG g2 and the Z1 were based on the same SOC... The Z1 felt vastly superior to use.. It felt faster and more responsive... But i ended up using the LG g2 due to its amazing battery life.
After that I got a Z3 which also had fantastic battery life and I kept that for numerous years till the Z3+ came out.
That was a bad decision.. I was an early adapter.. I wish I'd waited.
So I got an S6 edge.
Worst phone EVER.... The middle of the screen is so unresponsive.. That curve does not make perfect contact with the digitizer or whatever is underneath it.
So I got a S6 flat version... And still a terrible phone experience... Honestly the technology in Samsung phones is amazing... It's like their memory technology is twice as fast as the competition.
It's like comparing a computer with a hard drive to one with an SSD, but they're just let down by poor implementation of software.. It's hard to explain.
I love haptic feedback.. I can't type on a phone without it.
The Z1's haptic feedback was so amazing you could practically hear it across the room if you turned it up.. And if you kept pressing a button fast it's like it would set up a constant vibration..
Same for the Z3+, the Z3 had pretty average feedback as does the XZ I'm writing on now.
However the S6 has the worst feedback I've ever used on a phone.. It's a very high frequency.. It makes typing on the phone unpleasant, it makes using the navigation buttons unpleasant.. The S6 has issues with SwiftKey, yet SwiftKey worked flawlessly on the LG g2, Z1, Z3, Z3+ and the XZ.
So I've not really had that many brands of phones.. That's why I'm giving the Oneplus 3t a go... I've given Sony my loyalty and been burnt twice now.
I'm a big fan of notification lights so I won't go HTC since their too cheap to put a decent light in... And they hide it in the speaker grill.
I wish phone reviewers would review notification lights and feedback... There's more to a phone than how fast it launches a program or what the launcher looks like... There's how it "feels" to use as well.
Just my two cents worth on my thread.

Honestly I'm not a hardcore gamer, I only play the one game Galatronvs via the KIK APP, it's basically a BOT game which is a downwardly scrolling shootemup... However you do compete online against other players.
And I've confirmed it's definitely a heat issue.

Thanks for that info. I'll be sure to test for heat problems when I receive mines. Now I fear that I may have two problems when it comes to gaming, suttering and heat LOL.
I haven't had any heat problems with my current Z5 though. The only time was when recording in 4K during a heat wave (around 95F).
Meh the play store is still full of *****y games that weren't even optimised for the adreno 530, the phone has no fault, the 530 destroys not only the competition(in the same category), but especially older mobile GPUs, ask the dev to use his fingers to make a proper app, the XZ has no fault.
I play EA sport - UFC game (i think this is a first-classe game for smartphone, close to PS3 games graphic and textures!!!)
i see lag when conect charger and play this game... this is normal for any phone when actived soc thermal controll (I have galaxy S6 before XZ too!)
any phone have good performance in gaming is "iPhone" but i am ok with freedom in android platform
* sorry for my bad english...
i test some apps i don't if it s the case or not but most games are developed by unity3d!
they are fine on other phones! on xperia this is the similar issue between games that slowing down

Either way , at the moment I'm underwhelmed by my Platinum flagship phone gaming experience.

sometimes im playing game in my xz but i dont have really issue in heating or laggy (my phone have nougat version)
maybe your issue because you are in MM, lets try to nougat.
or use custome rom.
I received my XZ (F8331) a few days ago. I don't seem to be experiencing any heat issues when it comes to gaming. Also the stuttering I mentioned for Xperia devices is now almost gone. It's still there, but it's so little that it doesn't bother me anymore.
I've only played 3 games so far:
Skyforce Reloaded
Riptide GP Renegade
Asphalt Extreme
Running the Stability Test app from the Play store, the XZ does throttle down much much sooner than my Z5 (the Z5's heatpipes seems to work really well), but that app puts all CPU cores on full load.
I'm curious about this game Galvatronvs you're playing. I'd like to see if it runs the same on my XZ. Could you point me in the right direction to download this game?
need for speed no limits lag like hell

Hello ,
No problem here , i have try now about 30 minutes and no lag
Check my videos:
Recored the screen:
1:
2:
Okey i test with "game benchmark"
And no difference between S6 and XZ in game frame rate...
Asphalt8: get 30fps in both devices.
Zombi Highway 2: get 60fps in both devices.
From that test you find:
1) some games locked in lower frame rate, or bad optimized. (asphalt lock on 30fps, zombi highway lock on 60fps)
2) android use "vsync" lock the hardware for limitted fps. Adreno 530 is more powerful then mali T760 (and T880 too!). but there are some software limitations.
3) limited adreno 530 result: gpu not need all his power for reach to 60fps. In my Xperia XZ gpu never reach to 60% load, because not need more load for recive to 60fps.
4) from number#3: none overheating feel when compared with my galaxy s6! s6 need more gpu load for reach to 60fps and gpu core loading heat up the device.
5) unlock software limitations needs custom kernels, and risk of overheating and hardware damage! You don't need more than 60fps for mobile gaming.
6) bad news: Snapdragon 808 can reach to 60fps easily. You can only see "hardware war" between companies. When older SoC can do perfect the end-user works!
