[Q] Some unknown application is using a lot of packet data - Galaxy Y GT-S5360 and Duos 6102 Q&A, Help & Troubl

My Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360 has Android version: 2.3.6. My phone isn't rooted.
Recently some unknown app is using my 2G packet data mysteriously. I am on a cheap internet plan, so this uses up good percentage of my data; though I can ignore it. But my phone becomes hot (~35° C) and obviously battery gets used up. The mysterious usage eats up data ranging between 4-20 MBs. I am unsure if it is random or just that I am lucky to notice this and stop it before it goes SPARTA.
To find out, I tried out various usage monitoring apps, but that none helped to find out which app uses the data. The overall usage in the monitoring app accounts to the used sum, but no signs of what app it is.
I just have Google account(with sync off for Picasa albums) and WhatsApp listed in my Accounts and sync settings. Both have been ON since the day I have this phone, but this thing is happening recently, so I cannot blame them. Also, I do not have much that'd get synced and use this lot of data.
I have disabled auto update of my phone and the Play Store apps.
Due to low internal memory, I have uninstalled all of the default app's(i.e Google Map, Talk, Mail etc) updates except Play Store.
For having a clear idea I will list down the apps whose services are ON on my phone:
WhatsApp
Rocket Player - com.jrtstudio.AnotherMusicPlayer
Assistant - com.speaktoit.assistant
Battery Solo Widget - net.maicas.android.batterys
Notification Toggle - de.j4velin.notificationToggle
DRM Content - com.sec.android.provider.drm
Software Update - com.wssyncmldm
Email - com.andoid.email - I do not use this. Never used it.
Google Services (2 processes and 3 services) - Cloud-to-Device Messaging service, NetworkLocationService, Google Message Service.
Messaging
SnsService
Time
SyncmlDS - com.smlds
Maps * 2 (dunno why, but I see 2)
Software update - com.sec.android.fotaclient
Swype
I had linked all the possible apps to their Play Store page for your convenience to know about the app if in case you didn't, the system didn't allow me to, it says I need minimum 10 posts, upon which I do agree.
I had a thought if the counter on my service provider's side is bugged, but I have seen the uplink and downlink symbols continuously lighted, I switch on my packet data and find a crazy amount of data getting accounted in my usage.
PS: I stay in Mumbai, India. I am on Aircel's GSM network.
Will be thankful if you can help me find a solution to this problem. I have tried to provide most the information that I thought would be helpful, please ask if you need more information.
Thanks for reading such big post.

none of those apps listed (if downloaded from the playstore) should cause large ammounts of data usage
Whatsapp out of all of them would most likely be the largest
If your phone is hot its most likey an app is running all the time stopping the phone from going to sleep (as long as you havent got the phone on charge as this will also stop phone sleeping)
you can use this app to see what app is stopping the phone from sleeping
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector&hl=en_GB
All you can do is flash stock rom via odin and then re-test if you feel you have a rouge app

[Q] Application to show network usage per apllication

Hi! I'd like to now whether it's possible to check which application is using the network, and how much it uses it. I've heard that in "Spare parts" selecting "Battery history > Network usage" you can check this, but on Samsung Galaxy S it only says that the data is not available. If there is no such app is there a ROM that enables this data?
I've had the exactly the same problem! Would be grateful for any ideas or apps to determine what is downloading data
i'm using 3G watchdog
best app so far that tells me my usage
I don't think 3G Watchdog tells you what app is actually using it though.

But it does not show usage per application. There appears to be no app that can do this
Edit: The Battery history menu can show network usage on the Froyo JPC firmware. Use the SGS info app, can be found free on this forum or as a purchase on the Market.
Or dial *#*#4636#*#*
It doesn't look right though, Just a blue are red bar for each app, including the Dialer, an app called "0" which has the highest usage here, and "1010". No number to go with the bar.

at least you can sleep well knowing our phone can stand all those abuses and still lives
unless you drop the phone from over 1.5 meter tall
I'd really like this too. Definitely want to know where all my data is going.....
well if you think of it, you are only doing these as the very basic:
1. email (text)
2. web (text & video streams)
3. calendar sync (text)
4. contact sync (text)
5. facebook sync (text)
6. tweeter sync (text)
7. IM and/or (text)
less conventional data usage
8. Fring <------- video uses more
9. internet radio stream <--- high data usage as well, but less than video
10. FTP server (depends on usage)
11. Torrent (depends on usage)
12. Remote Desktop / VNC <--- medium data usage
so in the end, there is no way you do not know where you are using losing your data to
That is mostly true - but sometimes you have mystery usage.
Today, for instance, i got ticked off, and disabled background sync entirely. I already have my emails only polling every hour, and weather every 6 hours. (with background sync off, it shouldnt even poll at ALL.) I don't have any facebook/twitter stuff, and didnt even go near the web browser. The phone somehow STILL used over 10mb of data in about 5 hours. I dont know what is using this data, and its annoying me.
Thus the continued request to find a program that will show usage PER APP.
I have the same issue
Same problem here, its only been 3 days and i already have 100mb of data usage. I've downloaded some apps but not enough to give me 100mb of data! This is realy weird and frustrating.

Well, i have discovered that such a program does indeed exist.
BUT - it only works with froyo. BOOOOO!
I have the page bookmarked for when i get it though!
Here it is: TrafficStats
Nice, now all my Galaxy S needs is Froyo...
i'm so looking forward to froyo
2 more week to go
i too want to install that Traffic tracking App

[Q] Data usage.

How aboute the data usage of phone 7?
Does it stil use large amounts or is this solved with one of the updates?
Can't really find a clear answer.
not noticed it being high, but then i never did, perhaps some more anti windows phone FUD going around?
Make sure you switch off the automatic e-mail checking, location and hub updates. The People hub will not update until you actually open it, but then keep in mind: if you have Windows Live, Facebook, Google etc, they will all update once you open the hub - the pictures, status updates, messages and so on will eat your data. Set your e-mails to be checked manually. Disable reporting services.
Thanks for the info. I checked with my provider today and found out that i have 1gig limit, so i don't think it's a real problem.

Hey, i have:
1x exchange mailbox sync (mail, contacts,calendar...) - 15min check
1x gmail acc - only mail - hourly check
weather set to update every hour
set up all sync (fb, twetter, linked in)
WiFi mostly off (save battery) when not needed.
Data usage ranges from 90-150MB/month.

Motorola Apps Data Abuse even on CM9

I installed CM9 on my Defy+ because I had data abuse from Motorola Apps on original ROM. Now I've installed Onavo data counter and I found out that during 4 hours of using Internet connection Motorola apps used 4 MB. In this time I receive and send a few emails and send a few messages with Whatsapp but these apps have separated counter.
Does anyone know how block motorola apps?
Are you sure that is the motorola apps that are using your mobile data? remember that google also keep collecting data from your device, things like localization and syncing with google acc.
I know that but google maps, google services, Android OS, synchronization, google play, gmail they all have own meter

Try to delete a VPN
same issue here (on my droid pro). what is motorola apps???
I use a firewall to block unwanted data usage in order to not waste any unnecessary mb. I started using Droidwall, and now am using Android Firewall, both of them are equally good, I'm just testing Android Firewall for the moment.
I block everything I do not want using data (including Kernel, due to having had Android OS use up to 143 mb once), and even games (blocks ads ), just don't block Google Play Services, or else background data won't function properly and apps like Whatsapp, for instance, won't receive messages until you open the app, or any other app that you want using a network connection.
Yep just run one of the mentioned firewall.
I also suggest to disable some of these useless apps, you can do it with Bloat Freezer for example.

New Galaxy S3 has reached monthly mobile data limit in 24 hours!

After 2 years with trusty Nokia N8 I took delivery of an S3 with ICS on T-mobile here in UK yesterday with 750mb monthly data plan, more than I have ever used before on the Nokia.
I spend much of yesterday downloading Android updates and Apps on my home wifi, no problem.
This morning on 3G i get the warning I have reached my 750mb limit... in 24 hours!
The culprits are background data downloads by Opera Browser (Turbo Mode) 351mb and Android OS background 301 mb.
I have no idea what is going on especially the Opera Browser as I had only browsed a few pages.
Could somebody help me please to identify what might be going on. My first 24 hours with the lovely S3 is turning into a nightmare!
Thanks.
Does the Opera browser try to cache future web pages you may visit in turbo mode, thus using your monthly data?

Do you have background data on?

Remove that opera, and limit the playstore to wifi only in the playstore settings.
Turn the data limit option on and set it to x MB per day / month to control it.
Did the data usage so on the phone give you the warning or did it come from your service provider?
Sometimes i transfer things with samba through wifi to my pc, and my phone reads it as data usage.

Use some guys apps from the play store like traffic data, etc for daily limiting

Check opera settings and check if it's trying to cache webpages on mobile data, and for the AndroidOS settings, disable sync for your google account and just sync it when you are at home manually, also check other sync settings, see if they are seen as "AndroidOS" not the app also disable Samsung account sync.
And on a limited plan be sure the mobile data limit is set to make sure there are no unexpected fees.
And finally, on the data usage page press the menu capacitive button and check "restrict background data" this will ensure there is no data being transfered in the background unless you are on WiFi, for example your google account will not sync out and about, but it will once you connect to WiFi.
thank you for all these quick responses. To answer questions. I have since switched off background data as soon as i found out. T mobile website not yet able to show my usage to see if phone mistook wifi use for 3g. Opera turbo is supposed to shrink data before it gets to phone. It shrunk 1.7gb to 244mb goodness knows why so much. I was just browsing help forums. Is gt normal for 301mb of android os background to go on on day two ofowning phone?many thanks. My usage from 14th Oct to today (so 2 days) is 198MB, which is including everything, background data is about 56.66MB, that includes Android OS, dropbox, skype and a few more apps.
Depending on the apps installed you could see some huge background data numbers. As for your browser I would swap Opera for Firefox or chrome, chrome for me has used 150KB background data for me and caching websites is only done over wifi by default.
Dont know if you're using Picassa as well? I've heard this can also be one of the culprits when syncing...
I dont use it myself so dont know..
Lol, sync Picasa album should be the culprit, turn it off
《swagged from aokp》
on my i9305 i havent set any limits and only used 771mb in 10 days. and ive used the phone for updates etc
picasa raped me once.
just restricted its use to wifi.
luckily for you (and me!) T-Mobile don't charge anything if you go over limit and they still let you browse, email, facebook, tweet etc. only restrict streaming videos!

Hmm restricting streaming videos would be a bad thing for me, love watching youtube on the bus lol
Many thanks for prompt replies. I have taken on board all replies to avoid this again. No more opera or background update on 3g. Thanks very much

[GT-S6102B] DownloadManager consuming my 3g background

Hi all,
I'm using my old S6102 while my cell phone doesn't return the warranty. I have seen that my daily 3g data packet (50MB) has finished very fast, and only use whatsapp. Some background process is consuming my 3g. I installed the program Mobile Counter to monitor my network.
The process appears as Download Manager and too android.process.media, consuming 45MB, sometimes download, sometimes upload. But I have no way of knowing, what is being transferred.
Do you know of any method how to find it?
May be the google play service app trying to silently be installed by the google play store, but after I installed whatsapp, I did not see the installation attempt, when it installed, it appeared that the system was low memory.
I set Google Play Store for isn't to update automatically, and installed root to uninstall some programs useless and after unroot.
My rom is the stock, already did wipe data, after and their updates, all ok. After did download the apk from samsung site for updated the google play store, but the problem continues.
I set in:
General sync settings
Background data - marked
Auto sync - marked
Backup and restore
Back up my data - unmarked
Automatic restore - unmarked
Does anyone know what is consuming my 3g internet?
Thanks! Help me!
