Wireless charging - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So what's your guys opinion on our two options to enable wireless charging
The official Samsung cover adds some substantial bulk to the phone. The other option is something like the qi pad from Tylt that you simple stick under the batery cover with no added bulk.
Does anyone know if one charges the phone fast or anything like that.
Discuss thanks

Not sure what bulk you are referring to? Pretty sure the charge isn't affected more in either case..
Also, this should be moved to Q&A

Look at the official Samsung back. The back as a whole becomes flush with the camera lens. It appears to be even a bit taller than the camera lens. That's quite a bit of added thickness to the phone imho

The wireless charging back does add several millimeters of thickness to the phone. It is apparently enough that standard cases will not fit. I'm waiting on mine to come in, but OP, here is a long thread discussing options.

You may also look in the accessories section for options.

[Q] Will the palm pre's touchstone be able to charge the N4

The touchstone is a QI standard inductive charger so it should work right?
This is what the general consensus is, but won't know for sure until we get one. I ordered a couple of them for 5 bucks just in case.

I think it should work, the problem however will be that the Phone won't stay on the touchstone, because the Nexus 4 doesn't seem to have magnets in the back of the device (That beeing said it shouldn't be too hard to mod the touchstone).
It seems like the official Dock uses rubber to make the phone stay in position.

Verge video stated that it does indeed have magnets both in the phone and the charger. The rubber? surface is simply to keep it from scratching.

This is what I had read too. That is does have magnets. Never used a palm pre or anything like this with wireless charging other than my tooth brush. I wonder how strong it is? Like will I notice there is a magnet holding the phone to the wireless dock when I pick it up?

looks like its strong enough to hold it up in the car if its placed upside down you can google pictures of it inside a car. i can link photos yet
That's cool. I didn't think about the magnets being strong enough to hold up in car. Let's hope so. Like this picture.

It has been confirmed by Androidcentral's Admin that Touchstone will NOT work on Nexus 4.
It's pretty cool. I hate Samsung's attempts to milk what few Galaxy Nexus users there were by coming up with a different (and super expensive) dock for every possible situation they could think of, instead of making one flexible dock.
Also, why are you buying Touchstones? We don't even know how much the ball costs yet.

People were buying Touchstone docks because they're like $5 and if it turned out they would work, they were afraid the cost would jump up.
And yeah, we DO know how much the ball will cost. $50-55.

It would've been hilarious if the charging portion of the Touchstone worked, but the magnet was flipped so it repelled the Nexus 4.

I bet the coil in the touchstone can be reversed. Still doesn't guarantee it will charge.
Will NOT Work!
I had a GS3 International and got the verizon inductive charging back for it. Worked flawlessly with all Qi compatible transmitter pads like the Energizer ones. However, the Palm Touchstone is NOT Qi compatible. Hence its a no go for the Nexus 4.
I am very interested in the Fatboy pillows though. Are they out for sale yet? The colors are quite interesting compared to the plain black orb from Google.
Confirmed by android central. palm will not work with nexus 4. Hopefully google sells one for less than 20 bucks.!

No, you THINK you know. Until you can provide a link with official pricing details, it's speculation just like everything else. Googles been putting "break-even" prices on all its newest devices, who's to say they won't surprise with a cheaper dock solution too?

[Q] Wireless Charging on S5?

Just a simple question, If I will use something like this with Galaxy S5, will it cause any kind of problems? Like overheating, damaging the battery or internal parts or anything like that or will the back cover fit properly after adding such kind of receiver?
I do have seen Samsung Back covers for wireless charging but I guess third party cases won't fit due to addition of bulk to it.
Thanks in advance.

I think, since this is made for S5, basically, it will work good at it. Or, for you just to make sure, read reviews about the product. For your own satisfaction.
Will S4 Qi adapter fit an S5?
My question is, will a S4 Qi adapter fit an S5? I've been looking at the stock Samsung S4 and S5 backplates, and the location and number of metal contacts are different. However, lots of these third-party purported S5 adapters have the same contacts as the S4.
I'm also worried that adding the adapter may mess with the water resistance. What do you guys think? I'm just impatient and don't feel like waiting for the backordered Samsung backplate (and I just bought a spigen case that may not fit).

On a side note, I've found probably one of the coolest Qi charging stations I've seen. I'm buying it on Amazon as we speak.

That's something I've been worried about, as well. I'm using one of those adapters on my S4, but I think I will just get the official charging cover for the S5. One of the main reasons I'm getting the phone is for water resistance, so I don't want to find water leaking in around the camera because of the added bulk.

[HANDS-ON] T-Mobile G4

Let me know if you have any questions on it. I'll have some accessory reviews etc in the next few days!
Sent from my Nexus 7
How are the preinstalled widgets? LG seemed to hype up its calendar.
How much can you customize the nav buttons? I remember the G3 having different button visual styles in addition to being able to rearrange the buttons.
How much other customization can you do? Things like the app drawer, themes, etc.
Digging around in settings what can you find that LG isn't pushing as hard??
Do you have a comprehensive list of all the preinstalled apps, from LG, T-Mobile, and others?

First, is this pre-production sample shipping with a locked bootloader? (T Mob was the only US variant unlocked with the G3)

But I chose those questions only after watching the video. You mentioned most of those, but I was asking for more detail on them than was provided in the video.
I'd love to see it side by side to a G2. I love the size of the G2. A coworker had a G3 and I don't know about 1 handed use. Another coworker has a S5. Either would work. I am trying to get a rough visual.
How does the leather feel? I know it's real leather, but is it a stiffer or softer leather?
I thought the G4 doesn't have wireless built-in since you have to buy a separate case to use it. (or even a receiver you can plop on top of the battery, which is how I can use wireless charging on my Samsung Galaxy S3. Though, no idea, if the G4 will have that option.) Everywhere that I've seen specs for it say that it doesn't come with that out of the box.
How is the user experience? I remember trying out the G3 and I didn't like how the experience was. It seemed cluttered to me, which isn't say much since Samsung's Touchwiz can be the same way, but I thought it was fine on the S3, compared to the S4 and S5, which I didn't like it as much. Did LG improve on their UI from the G3 to G4?
What are your thoughts on the camera? I know LG hyped that camera SOO much, so I need to see some real-world pics and such. On paper, it sounds great, but curious how it actually performs.

If the G3 being able to add wireless charging with the quickwindow case meant it had the pins that allowed a wireless charging sticker to be added underneath the plastic back, I'm guessing the fact that the G4 has a quickwindow case with wireless charging means it's only a matter of time before someone makes a wireless charging sticker for the G4.

LG World has tons of free themes, fonts etc. You can still change the soft keys like the G3, also has the option for white or black background.
I can get you a list of the apps, if you pause the video on that part you can see them all. It's 9 T-Mobile apps, plus most Google apps and that's it.

I don't personally much like the leather, it's not hard or soft; can't really explain it. It feels nice, just not my cup of tea. I might check out the black leather back. But I did like the grayish one with diamond pattern.
The G4 has wireless charging, but I think you need to buy the back for it like I had to do on the G3. It was ~$20 for the original one from LG.
The UI is cluttered by default, but you can make it into a list and make it less cluttered. I like it much better after that.
The camera is actually pretty amazing. I'll be posting pictures on Instagram/Twitter if you want to follow, same as my handle here. I know they get somewhat compressed, so I may start another thread with camera samples if you guys want that!
I think the round back would piss me off when using the phone while it is laying down on its back. I very often use one hand to double tap to wake, flip through notifications, send quick replies, double tap off. With a rounded back, can you type one handed while it is on a desk? Or does it rock back and forth? Seems like it would also slip off my lap while driving easier because the contact area is less.
And Qi charging is a requirement of any phone of mine. I have a sweet setup at home and work (Nexus 7 2013 and Verizon G2). Can you confirm? I'd hate a "qi backplate" because those typically add additional thickness and disallows feather cases like Incipio Feather from fitting.

I can type with one hand just fine, but it is round & moves when on the table. But it's not a huge deal to me, but that may be a deal breaker for some.
The Qi back for the G3 didn't add any bulk & thin cases fit just fine. I'll have some cases up tomorrow though!

Yeah, that's my current setup with the S3. But, that still means you have to buy something to actually be able it. It's not like phones like the S6 where you can literally put it straight out of the box and plop it onto a wireless charger and it'll start charging.

Yeah, I was wondering if colors would be exclusive, depending on the carrier. I've seen promos that T-Mobile is the only carrier that'll have the brown one you currently have. I remember seeing the black leather one for AT&T, but no idea if it's exclusive or not.
Ah okay, so it is like my S3 then, where you have to buy something separate to actually get use of the wireless charging since it's not enabled by default. Lil annoying, since I would prefer it enabled right out of the box, but it's not a deal breaker. I only even bought the receiver for the S3 because the charging port has gotten rather finicky, so it's buying time before I actually upgrade later this year.
I'd love to see some camera samples, so feel free to post them here or make a new thread for it. Your call on that.

You could also try getting one of those receivers that you can place on top of the battery (essentially looks like a sticker with some pins). I'm using that for my S3 to help buy some time before upgrading later this year since my charging port is a bit finicky now. Because it goes inside the phone, it really doesn't add any bulk to your device.
From what others have mentioned in this thread, only a matter of time before someone makes one for the G4. Because it's not a case, I'm not sure how fast it'll charge, compared to an actual backplate. It might be slower, but I honestly can't say.

You can get a qi wireless charging sticker for literally five dollars that takes two minutes to install, so it isn't that much of a hassle at all.
Sprint also has the black leather G4. Hopefully T-Mobile's brown leather exclusive expires by the time I get my G4 in November, because I want it.

So does the G3 that ships in the US not have QI charging out of the box?
My G3 came with the QI charge patch built into the original rear cover and I was kinda assuming the G4 would be the same.
Thanks for the great review ... No doubt we will get the G4 here in Australia just before LG releases the G5 to you guys hahaha
Photo attached of the unit that was reviewed in France ... the QI patch is built into their model with the leather rear cover.

I believe that is the NFC antenna, not wireless charging. The impression LG gave off with the G4 was that there will be no wireless charging built in and the quickwindow case will be required for wireless charging. This is what they were saying for the American release of the G3, but they said the global model of the G3 will have wireless charging. From this, I'd guess the whole world will be in the same wireless charging situation with the G4 like the US was with the G3.

Ah, thanks for the explanation ... that might explain why only two contacts are made out of the 4 available.
I just googled replacement parts for the G3 and the QI and NFC are in the same patch ... but they use all 4 little contacts (on the picture I attached only two of the contacts are showing on the rear case).. At least the G4 has the 4 contacts on the phone so its likely someone will figure a way to replace the NFC with a combined NFC & QI with all 4 contacts.
Seems like a backwards step though
how did you get one already? and do you have to send this unit back after testing or did you win it?
seems to me the only people who got test units were professional reviewers.

Review After Having the Phone for 6 Days

OK my short review from having the LG G4 for 6 days now! Just as background, I luckily got the phone through a workmate i know in South Korea so the one i have is the South Korean model. Also, the South Korean version gives you something that is a bloody lifesaver and just so useful and you wish you'd always had one: an extra battery. More on that later.
So I have been using the Nexus 6 since launch and love it. To me at least it's been great – big screen, big development on XDA (I love custom roms/kernels and flashing in general) and over all a phone that i have loved. The only issues i have had really are: the screen is ok but could be better, the camera is ok and could be better and it is heavy and hefty so I use it one-handed but only just. It's a monster!
So last few months have been looking for something not quite as big with a better camera and better screen. I tried both the S6 and S6 Edge and sold them within a few days. Mostly because i think they are just too small and poky or something. S6 Edge was too sharp for me.
Along comes the G4! And if you don't want to read the boring detail below then in short: I love it and haven't really seen any faults at all.
Boring Detail:
Battery:
Here's a tricky one as i have always had decent battery on all phones i get. And all i do is read the same thing over and again on battery threads everywhere: 'i get only 2 hours Screen on Time help!' and then 'i get 7 hours Screen on Time and i'm amazing!'. The problem is the same: every person's usage pattern and apps and mobile reception is different so this all accounts for differing Screen on Time. So – FOR ME – i am getting consistently around 5 to 5.5 hours Screen on Time which is perfectly fine. So i reckon on MOST of the current flag ships you'd be getting pretty similar SOT.
However the one big bloody glaring thing about the South Korean model is that extra battery and that right there should solve pretty much ALL battery issues. So I just have the extra battery in the charging case attached to a USB cable on my computer. If I have gotten low on a day where i have the used phone a lot then 38 seconds later i have swapped batteries for the new 100% one! How good is that! Do yourself a favour and get a spare battery! No doubt they will be available shortly.
Two things that reviews are singling out as ‘cons’ which I think is just silly.
Wireless charging. I love wireless charging and until you use it a lot you don’t realise how convenient it is. I also have two Tylt Vu chargers and they are expensive so i want a device that uses wireless charging! Ok so the G4 has wireless charging CAPABILITY meaning that you need a different back than the one that comes with it and it will work.
Already LG has said that the G4 circle case will have that. So all I will be doing is waiting for the inevitable Shenzen rip off sticker that you stick inside your case that gives me wireless charging. I will give it 4 weeks max before they are on Ebay for $5.
Quick charging. There’s this boring debate that the G4 did not include Quick Charging 2.0 even though Qualcom have it in their chip. Big deal! What you do get is the 1.8 Quick Charge which isn’t quite as good but is still perfectly acceptable! In my testing it charges a bit over 1% per minute. Which is just fine.
Feel:
Sorry about the pretentious term ‘feel’ but it’s the best way of describing a major kick ass thing this phone has! It is just the BEST weight, feel and hold of any phone i’ve owned. It’s not light, it’s not heavy. It’s not small and it’s not phablety big. It is juuuuuuuust right. Dunno what it exactly is – maybe the slight bend? But it’s great.
Leather. I would never in a squillion years think i would own a leather phone or that the leather would work. But it does. Looks good, feels great, is great. Photos do not do it justice. I got the black weather which i love but if i was to buy it again the brown/tan i think could be the pick. If you get the plastic to save a few bucks then, um, don’t!
Camera:
Not going to go into detail because every review already has and i am not a manual camera person. I am Mr Point and Shoot. Suffice to say it takes very good photos. Had it over the weekend at Adelaide with relatives and photos turned out great.
Lag/Stutter/UI Blah:
Ok so on EVERY phone i own i remove the stock launcher and install an aftermarket one because guess why? They’re better. Don’t understand why people cry about the OEM launcher when the aftermarket ones are installed within 16 seconds and are better anyway.
Stutter/lag – again this is another topic that i don’t understand. I really haven’t had a phone that suffered at all from this. I ALWAYS change the animation three options to 0.5 in Developer Options and this often is more than enough. Don’t need to be rooted and takes 14 seconds – why wouldn’t you do it? In general though, i have not had stutter or lag in this phone at all.
The Knock Code to turn on screen. Sorry but every phone that doesn’t have this should get that as a ‘con’. It is just soooo convenient. Love it.
Notification shade works well. Lots of options, lots of shortcuts to choose.
Notification light – a no brainer and dunno why the Nexus 6 didn’t have it and i had to install a custom ROM to get it. It works and works fine.
Ability to change nav bar buttons around and add a couple more. Love this as i always like my back button on the right not the left.
These little customisations are what really makes the UI i think. So handy.
Display:
Great. Bright and similar when i had the S6 as a stand out. Reviews have covered it pretty well too – is an excellent colourful display. LG got it right.
Sound:
Decent! I just don’t use my phone to listen to stuff except for headphones but is loud and ok. Not as good as HTC but good for a phone.
Weird big bloody LCD density:
Here’s a weird thing which no review has mentioned which is the only thing that really annoyed me: the density is 620! Meaning that things are huge! Everything looked like a huge fonted behemoth! And without root i wasn’t able to use the easy way of changing the density via build.prop and eventually had to do it via hooking it to the PC and using Android SDK tools and change it to 540.
Overall:
Found a phone that for me at least satisfied most of what i want in a phone very well. And i haven’t even missed using a custom rom because you can’t root it yet! Never thought i’d say that. So once everyone has it in a month then hopefully development will mean it is even better!
Oh and get the effin leather purlease!!
Thank you for this nice review! Really appreciate it
That was a bloody useful review. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I'm on a GN4 but as usual itching for my 6 month change...
Q how is the speakerphone? GN4 is excellent. Is it loud? I was a little disappointed by the g3.
The.pixel density issue is interesting. I loved the g3, but for some reason I found it difficult to read text. Even when I changed the size. Partly it's my middle age eyesight but it's not an issue i suffer from with the galaxy note series or even s5. Could never figure out why I found the g3 difficult to read. Perhaps it's that pixel density.

Yes the speaker is definitely loud. It is on the back of the phone though and is just one speaker. I wouldn't say quality is great but definitely loud.
Yes so weird about the LCD density! But yeah if you like big text then all good.
Great review, we are all hopeful we get root, bootloader unlock and Roms as well.
After installing the alternative home launcher, have you had any issues with the Knock On or Knock Off feature?

Nope knock on/off works great still with alternative launcher.
I have read in only 1 review the leather is kind of poorly attached to the plastic back. How nice is the leather attached? Does it wrap around the edges and conceal any plastic back? Clean install?

Seriously it's great. Photos don't do it justice though. It's hard leather but looks and feels really sturdy and just matches the phone.
It doesn't wrap around all the edges though.

So what does it do? I must wrap all the way around the edges of the plastic back it is attached it? if it does not, it would peel up. I am talking about wrapping around all of the edges of the plastic back so NO plastic back is seen along the edges. Not wrapping around the entire phones back

This is great news thank you for confirming this, appears that owners of the G3 and G2 were forced to use 3rd party apps to enable one or both of those features when using an alternative home launcher. Im assuming you are using Nova Launcher, I have also always installed that stable application on top of whatever manufacturer I buy.
What is something that has surprised you the most about the G4?
Any feature or something unique from that phone that reviewers or users have not thought of bringing up?

Surprised is definitely me loving the leather when I thought it would be too garish.
The only thing reviewers haven't brought up was that annoying LCD density!

Ok yeah.... as I had expected and hoped.. it does wrap around the edges of the battery door. So, you do not see the leather end and then some plastic of the back battery door. And, agreed, and as expected, it does not wrap leather up around the edges of the phone, just the battery door - so it is a nice clean finish.

Can you expand a bit on how you addressed the density? I know you said "hooking it to the PC and using Android SDK tools and change it to 540.". I would modify in build.prop as you mentioned, but no root so no way so I am not so sure what you mean here how you accomplished this tweak.

Great thanks.. IF the opportunity arises, it would be cool to see a before and after photo of your text size density.
Can the G4 turn Chrome into a free floating window?
Great review, very informative.
I passed on the G3 after really liking the G2 mostly due to the locked BL. I hope LG provides the ability to unlock it this time around like Sony and HTC do.
Or someone here cracks it much faster than it happened on the G3 which took what seemed like forever.

Thanks for the link. Do the dock and lock screen icons work on stock launcher using this method. On the G3 they didn't scale correctly?
What buttons can you change/add to the nav bar? Can you add a menu button?
Is there any sign of the lollipop memory leak?

battery bank case?

Hello everyone!
I have looked in both Amazon and eBay and can't seem to find this but do you guys know if there is a battery bank case out there to add more battery on our phones? I have regular battery banks but sometimes it is just more convenient to have a battery that is attached to your phone. If not I think I might just need to get some velcro and a slim battery bank.
Welp, after contacting the major folks: zerolemon, mophie and Motorola they said that they didn't have any plans to make one. I had to get some velcro and make my OWN Moto mods! The left is my Moto g4 plus and to the right is my work iPhone 6s with a real battery case.
can you make this one for me?or tell me how to do?

He used velcro tape as he mentioned, it's only to tighten the power bank on the back cover. BTW, the method is cool and looks like a bomb

What strongst said. Below are the parts that you see in the picture. I can't put links yet I don't think.
Case: Incipio DualPro Case [will work with any case or even without one really]
Battery Bank: RAVPower 6700mah Palm Sized Portable Charger Power Bank (2.4A Output & 2A Input, iSmart 2.0 Technology) [I like this one because it provides faster charging which works for our phones and also is a nice handle with this velcro tape]
Velcro tape: Can be bought anywhere, I used the fuzzy side on the phone and the prickly side on the battery bank just because I hold the phone more.
@strongst - Thanks! Yes it does and people look at me weird when I use it. But when I am getting over 2 days battery life and 8-10 hours playing Pokemon Go! I can't complain.
If there is a manufacturer that is willing to make a decent battery case for us I will probably be one of the first ones to jump on it. I have one for my work phone and I don't mind the added weight it brings because I get decent added battery life on it. But I think with budget phones like ours chances are low that someone like ZeroLemon will make one for us.
Opps just broke charge port trying to carry this in pocket.
Easier to get a spare phone on another network than these idiot anker cases. I will be looking hard for a swapping battery phone next time. In safe mode I can only get 1/2 a work day. Which is about 14 to 15 hours.
