Display of Black colours - Xperia Z2 General

Hi guys.
Just a Quick question:
I compared the screen colours of my Z2 with my old Samsung Galaxy S2 using the app screen test.
There I noticed, that black on the Z2 isn't really black while on my S2 black is truly black.
Is that normal?

Its normal as far as i know Samsung phones use Super Amoled screen which has darker black while Sony use IPS screen technology has less darker black ,, dont worry its totally normal

It can't really be darker than the screen itself, because black is absence of light, which means the light sources are turned off when displaying black.
The color black will be as dark as the panel.

Well the panel is definitely much more black when it is turned off.. In the end the black white contrast on my S2 is much better
When I run the screen test app, when black is being displayed, the screen isn't off though

IPS is lighting even when display black, compared to AMOLED where every pixel has its own led diode so when AMOLED display black, its pixels eventually turn off. Thats why..
Different display technology, both have their adv. and disadv.

On amoled displays black pixels turn completely off, which is why it has so good contrast.

this is completely normal, because the superamoled panel have isolated pixels. the black in amoled panels is literally black, no light emitted, only the reflections from screen. in a complete dark room, the screen blackness would be the same as the room. LCD panels cant do that, the best ones can do something like 0.08cd/m2 of black levels, this mean that the black is actually greyish, while super amoled can do 0cd/m2 meaning infinite contrast. according to reviews xperia z1 compact have a black level of 0.44cd/m2, and while the z2 has a better screen, the black levels should be around the same

thx for the explanations.
Light emitted always needs battery consumption so I would assume, the amoled screen is especially with dark colours more battery saving, then the lcd screen, right?

Yes it is

Screen contrast weird thing going on.

Hi
I just noticed something weird going on, the more black I have in the screen the brighter the whites get. Asif the more oleds are turned on its draining more power and making the other oleds loose overall power.

CONTRAST.

To expand, the more black there is around the white, the more white the black seems in comparison, that is contrast.
And as the AMOLED pixel is its own light source the contract is already very high, as a black pixel is an off pixel not giving out any light.

Hence why having a black background saves power and also lessens the chance of screen burn on amoled displays.

For me it is the "Auto adjust screen power" on display settings menu.

Yeah exactly the notification menu dragging makes it really obvious.

Yeah, definitely that. This function is on by default and limits the maximum power drain of the screen, so if there's a lot of white (or bright colors) on screen it will limit the overall brightness in order to save power.
I think it's very irritating and disabled this feature about 1 hour after buying the phone and never turned it back on.
Thanks guys. Auto screen power definitely the culprit. The screen is allot more uniform and "normal" now. Nicer to use.

half of the screen looks purple

hello
i have upgraded from s3 to s4 all is ok but the screen is annoyingly.
If there is a white background the half of the screen looks purple.
but if I set brightness on maximum it looks normal
You need to return that because it's definitely a defective screen. Mine is universal whiteness regardless of brightness level.

i dont see any natural color the screen looks boring too white
Xperia Z display shows terrible black clipping with firmwares .253+
Sony tried to show us an illusion of better black levels after .253 update, but black levels are exactly the same as before .253. Terrible black clipping is now showing us an illusion of better black, but all they really did with new screen calibration is that all near black levels are completely black and there is no detail in black scenes. Everything is just black.

looks fine to me as long as your looking at it straight on. the xz doesnt have the best viewing angles as we already know but i think the screen is pretty damn good. there is really only one phone that has a better screen imo and it is the htc one. use a rom that has more of a dark theme if is the white that bothers you

only problem with this app is its made for super amoled screens " the app can be useful for some devices and very helpful in the reading or making images more natural on the overcolored screens"

i think the screen is great and sharp
just the colors sony need to fix this boring colors make them more vibrant
I think the colors are ok, but the screen technology is absolute [email protected]! You can easy see the backlit lighting through the screen edges, and that is in my opinion, the couse for poor viewing angles! The light makes white shade over the screen. Too bad, Xperia Ultra is obviously same technology, as we can see from the reviews! Shame on you Sony! These could been the really outstanding devices!

That's exactly what I've noticed too! The dark images lose all the detail because the dark colours gamut is very limited!

[Q] Vertical lines on the screen

Does all xperia sp has it or is it failure? I mean vertical lines are visible on light backgrounds. and even if the phone is turned off under good lighting conditions when phone is tilted those lines can be seen. I don't use any screen protector. I'm going crazy about this. I was expecting a lot from this phone but now I simply regret I bought it.
I can't take a picture but I found the same problem here
is this really a feature of xperia sp? crazy if so...
Yes that's normal and it is also on other Sony phones. But it is so rarely that you see these lines, so it doesn't matter for me. I actually also like the stripes

It's normal. I had these lines too.

Pink tint in white background

Hi guys.
I'm a Note 4 user.
I love It, but using white background i find a little area in the low half screen not so white but white /pink.
Tilting the screen white is cold.
It's normally?
Erica Griffin in Note 4 Review spoke about this problem in her video.
Ps. Why "Reading Mode" is missing in Note 4?
Same here. I have seen a lot of N4 - an they all had a pinkish tint on white backgrounds. One more, one less.
Gesendet von meinem SM-T325 mit Tapatalk
So this is not a problem?
Of course this is a problem. But as I said before - this is the way nearly all the N4 screens I have seen look like. I fear you have to accept it.
Try changing screen mode
Adaptive or Cinema makes it bluer. But having half the screen colder like that isn't normal.
