[FOUND SOLUTION] the poorman's shield-streaming isn't working right for me. - Shield General

i've been trying really hard to get a droidmote/x360ce+splashtop setup with my shield and computer so i can stream regardless of my poorman's spec (1.9 ghz core 2 duo, GeForce 9800GT, 8GB ram, at least i have the second-latest OS, windows 8 64 bit) but droidmote and x360ce dont seem to be working correctly. when i try to play games like portal 2 (yes i know /bin for source engine games) the ONLY controls that work right is the up/down r-stick movements and the l-stick(and i'm not sure but maybe the right button idk) but i'm getting problems like- moving the r-stick left and right, which should move like mouse, counts as placing b/o portals, depending on the direction used. the r-trigger counts as moving the mouse right. buttons like l-trigger, l-button, y and b just dont work. i'm almost positive x and a aren't mapped right. the pause button does not work. i havent been able to test the dpad so i don't know if there are any problems with it. any possible help with this? i've wanted to stream from my computer so bad but i never figured out how to use droidmote until now. now i am so close and i'm both happy and depressed about it.
edit:
i had heard of it, but since i preciously did not know how to set it up right, i did not believe that splashtop thd actually HAD controller support. then, earlier, i got an idea. how aboutnif i tried to install the splashtop controller drivers like the droidmote drivers? well, lets just say it worked. it worked far better than i anticipated. so now i do not need this thread to help me any more. glad noone replied else i never would have put my brain to the task of thinking like that. if i'd gotten replies i'd still be sitting here troubleshooting droidmote, the bs controller program (at least for me it is being) i played portal 2 for about an hour after i discovered splashtop controller support and it worked flawlessly. maybe going to try minecraft with minecontrol later. bye!

Think Outside mouse working with Exec

If any of you have the TO Travel Mouse, the latest HTC Universal driver works. It can be found here.
I installed to main memory. It took five attempts to find the mouse, but it works superbly so far, even handles the screen change when I switched the screen.
The only slight niggle is that the BT Keyboard driver installs as well, but that is an old moan.
Yes, the fact they combine the drivers is annoying. In this new version, does the mouse still require you to re-bond it every time you start it up or does it remember it's bonding now? The previous version had a bug that never allowed the device to remember it's bonding, forcing you to re-bond on every use.
I'm a sucker for stuff like this, and I'm afraid to say that I'm the kind of person whou would buy a mouse for my phone, altough is there any practicl reason you would? Like, isn't the point of the PPC not to have to carry extras around?
Quick.. put me off before I buy one! I already have a keyboard!

I find that when using the Exec on a desktop that tapping the screen tips the device, often resulting in double taps. The mouse stops this. It really does make it like a mini laptop.
I think my TO mouse is broken. Can't get it to be discovered by anything at all, let alone my Exec.

HTC Shift Unboxing

Getting closer...
http://revver.com/video/711405/htc-shift-unboxing/
I Love It !!!
Hey .. thank you for the links !!
I totally love this UMPC.. this is the best device ever released yet ... I have to wait about 6months to have it .. but I want it as soon as possible.
It will be so nice using a big WinMobile screen (better than the small 320x240 on a 2"8 screen). Vista is a so nice OS... I will have my 2 favourites OS on the same device.. I can't believe it !
HTC has put everything needed in the device. The review is nice.. but they should have introduced origami 2.0 ... not just showing the start animation.
If someone want to offer one ... I take it !
Unless they have sorted out the 2 hour battery life, it will remain a gimmick and no buyer will be satisfied with the purchase
I was really into the shift until I spent about three hours with a Fujitsu Lifebook P1620 today. 9" touch-screen convertible, 1.2ghz dual core, 100mb hard drive, vista or tablet xp, PC card slot (hello cheap wireless 3g card), VGA out, fingerprint reader, 3 USB ports, bluetooth, wlan, touchscreen works great for writing/browsing (it is passive digitizer though), you can touch type on it with some practice, and over 5 hour battery life My 2008 budget comes in next week and I am absolutely buying one.
Making calls with shift seems like it will require a hack, no simple soft-reset for the crippled wm6, embarrasing battery life, 5 minute cold-boot time for vista, etc. Why pay nearly $2k for a gimmicky device that in the end doesn't really do what a phone or a laptop can do. We all have a phone anyway...who wants to carry that monster to the pub just so you don't miss a phone call??
Well. I got mine 24 hours ago and I like it. Keyboard is nice. I cand write using my 10 fingers after some training. Battery life isnt bad and if I need more live I ve a power bank that gives me 7 hours more. wifi, hsdpa and bt works very well. It moves Vista nicely. I ve installed my development tools (Visual Studio 2008, eclipse and jboss) and work nice. VGA output letme use hi res at home with a lcd screen. I wasnt very convinced when I bought it but by now I am very satisfied

well .. you are wrong on many things ! ouch ....
1°) making calls is still not sure that it will require a hack ... you can see french sites telling that it is a COMPLETE PHONE... so I think that it could depends on the country you buy it.... we'll see !
2°) for WM6 there are ability to soft-reset it .... because it will be A REAL WM6.. even if they talk about "Snap-Vue" it IS WM6.... what they put upon will never be enough to change it in another OS... it is running WM6 !
3°) embrassaing battery life ? if you are using WinMobile .. you will have about 1 week of battery life.... it's enough ! Vista is so greedy that you should never think about using it without a power supply.
4°) 5 minutes cold-boot time ... oh my god ! .. you are completely wrong !!!!!! it is faster than that .. it is about a minute ... not more than 2 minutes ! And with Vista SP1 it is the same time for hibernate boot ! (hibernate was not good with preview Shifts... because of Vista.. but Vista SP1 is a little better). On the video : vista starts at 6:36 and is running at 7:40 ... 1:04 for resuming from hibernate !
5°) The device is more about 1200$ .. than 2k$ ..
If you don't know anything about the real shift spec.... I understand why unuseful 9" laptop seems interesting for you !

nice !! have you tried installing winmobile application sending a cab by mail ? just to be sure that we will be able to install everything we need .
is there any way to shutdown both (winmobile and vista) ? Something about voice calls?
My main concern is if I'll be able to run full version of WM and access files on hard drive or SD card and work with them. If yes, I'm in! Anyone has been able to hack it so far?
No luck sending the cab because you can save it to disk (outlook doesnt want to execute it because It says is unsafe). But after saving it I dont know how to execute it....
I havent tried phone calls. well, I dont know how. Vista can be turned off, of course. But you can turn off windows mobile. Even I dont know how to reset it (except remove one second the battery). But I am sure we will solve all this issues.
Dani
once saved to disk, press CTRL while tap and holding on the clock. Select run
type FEXPLORE or FEXPLORER (don't remember)
Launch your cab.

CTRL while tap and holding on the clock ?? Seems to be a pretty good hack !
danielherrero .. plz confirm that it works
1. YOu prove my point. phone functions are NOT widely available, if at all. I am glad you red something on a frech website, but I have actually held and used one of these and it did NOT make phone calls out of the box. Yeah, we can hack to do that if bought in a non-voice approved area, and get no support/possibly void the warranty. nice.
2. show me a soft reset hole, cause the one I played with didn't have one. THere is another thread in this forum from a guy who has to take the battery out of the shift he actually has in his hands to soft-reset. Your syllogistic argument is silly.
3. battery life of one week when using the phone...which I already carry one of, if you want to use the pc part of it the battery life is miserable so what's the point of having it there when it must be tethered to a wall wort at all times.
4. Watch the unboxing vids, this thing takes ages to cold boot vista, which i what i was talking about, not the hibernate resume you are quoting. also, the one I used for several hours took about 4.5 minutes to load vista. Desktop PC's fully specced have trouble loading vista in one minute my freind. IF that has been solved on newer releases I would like to hear someone who is holding one right now say that. Thanks for the tip to "never use vista without a power supply" now please continue to prove my point about the pc function of this thing being a joke by telling me how the shift can't be downgraded to xp....
5. The cheapest I have ever seen advertised for the shift is on the edge of $1700 US. Where are you seeing them for $1200?? I have seen them for 1200 EUROS, which is about $1680 US. Note that euros and us dollars are worth a different amount.
I'm not trying to bash the shift. Nor do I want some kind of flame war with you. I am reporting my experiences on actually having used both of these devices. I am sure that for some people the shift fills the little niche that they need. My point was that for me, and I would venture that for a lot of business users, the shift has a lot of shortcomings and is not the right device.
Your post makes me pretty sure that you have never ever actually used either of these devices, so you shouldn't tell people that they don't know anything about something you are even less informed about. If someone who owns one of these and is using it now wants take issues with my statements, I am very ready to listen. Perhaps the models they have are better than the one I used, if so I'd love to hear about it...from people who have one in thier hands!

It was working on a previous ROM. I am talking about the CTRL key from the physical keyboard. Try from the mail app for example. If it's not the clock, it's the battery icon.
As a side note, did you get the unit as a reviewer, or did you actually bought it from somewhere where anybody else can?

I have used the shift for about half an hour on a demo day (Microsoft Unified Communication launch). But I have not bought it yet.
1. yeah .. but I hope for a hack (without a warranty void !)
2. it seems that there are no soft-reset hole..but I'm sure that we will be able to soft reset with a program without having to have full WM6
3. battery life on my laptop is half an hour.. so the shift is more than what I'm used to ... maybe this is why I'm not worried about. and if you have read my scenario (few threads before) you would see that the Shift is not on a battery life that much in Vista mode.
4. I have watch the unboxed videos and read many reviews about the shift.. and what they said was always "resuming from hibernate take longer time than a cold boot" and that a cold boot take about a minute and a half to 2 minutes but these times were from the "test prototype" of the shift. And if resuming from hibernate take only a minute... you just have to use it and you should not care about the cold boot time ! (I'm on vista on my desktop and always use hibernation mode ... and it comes back in less than 30 seconds .. and from sleep in less than 2 seconds... but it's a faster computer than the shift).
5. I have read a lot about $1200 announced before the official released ... but maybe the price is a higher .. the iphone is 1000€ and I think that it is less than $1000 ... so don't believe that the price in € is significant to the price in $ .. it used to be the same price ($1000 --> 1000€ .. even if $1000 is only 680€) but I can't say if there is shops where the shift will be under $1400.
I don't want to enter in a war with you too .. I'm just sharing my opinion that's all. I have read a lot on the shift for more than a year (like so many people) and I'm not a current owner of a shift.

.. I hope we will find out to do it ... I'm sure there is a way ! because they need to remove snapvue for the support !
I think the clue is to know how the updates will be applied. Probably It will be done using vista side. So I think there will be a way from this side to access flash chip WM6. This weekend I couldnt research about it but tomorrow I will do it because I want to install bandswitch to use gprs with direct push instead of umts to increase battery live. (althought I ve to say battery live is good so far..
Dani
ps. I bought it on shopping center in Madrid, Spain. They have it since last monday.
There is a way from vista, because the manual state you can install a certificate for the WM side from the vista control pannel. I think this is just a com port to redirect on the WM part for getting AS, but if the trick I gave you doesn't work, it's just a question of time before getting access to the OS.
Maybe you could try on you PDA to check what I'm talking about. Presse the center of your D pad instead of CTRL in this case.

Disable fall detect (g-sensor)

Anybody know how to disable this feature?
When i throw my shift in the air (about 5cm) and catch it it will power off.
I don't like this feature and i can't seem to find a way to disable it yet.

I second this request to disable the g-sensor. Mine is far too sensitive, and often locks up my Shift hard drive when I simply move too fast. It can not be good for the integrity of my system files.
EDIT: Apparently, the g-sensor is an STMicroelectronics i2c-gsensor LIS3LV02DL 3-axis inertial accelerometer.
I am hoping that I can some entry to disable for it under control panel hardware/system settings...
How does the Shift use this sensor?
Is it connected with Vista or SnapVue?
It's connected to the Vista/windows side.
The Linux gurus have worked out how to fully utilise the g-sensor for the HTC Shift. But I have not seen anyone access it using Windows.
The default factory behaviour is that a detected G threshold will park the hard drive head effectively hanging the machine, forcing you to power it off to be usable again.
I don't use Linux, instead I have windows 7 on my Shift. I tried looking through the system hardware to see if there is anything that I can disable/uninstall to disable the g-sensor, but I didn't see anything that was obviously named.
Maybe it is something to do with the BIOS.

I was just wondering whether it is possible to use the Shift in a car cradle on a rough road given the g-sensor behaviour stated above. I was hoping to soon get a Windows 8 Tab when they become available possibly towards the end of the year and then retire my Shift to be the CarPC. I havent done much driving with the Shift on so would be interested in knowing how it behaves in the circumstances. The roads in my part of the world are rough, full of potholes or non-existent thus my huge interest in this subject.....
mines broke lol
mine never turns off even after hard drops. twice in last 2 weeks mine went down so hard the protective case flew off. once was down concrete stairs, still running, never missed a beat.

Constantly Updating List of Wanted Features

An updating list to help give the Mad Catz guys an idea of what we want out of the OS. Please anyone post the features that you want and I'll update the list.
Read off of multiple USB flash/HDs ▬ currently recognizes multiple disk drives but does show mounted
Read and write support for NTFS file format
exFat Support
Webcam support(UVC)
USB audio input/output channel option
hide soft button bar on soft button bar or otherwise easily accesable
power off/restart/sleep menu button on soft button bar or otherwise easily accesable
screenshot button on soft button bar or otherwise easily accesable
HDCP Kernel
USB power management tool - for shutting down power to usb plugs while device is in sleep mode
Gamestreaming ▬ Its coming
Gamepad stick support in recent apps android view
system settings switch to change right click on mouse to back button instead of just being read as left click
Good thread, happy with the product, but still room for improvements!
Please, add webcam support(UVC) !
http://support.madcatz.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/434/172/can-i-use-a-webcam-with-mojo
You can't clam to be a top-set box with out it!
Also exFat support would be nice
It's the standard for USB portable drives.
While I agree with this:
http://support.madcatz.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/427/172/how-to-turn-mojo-off
It's a portable device, so yes, please let us turn it off
Hardware wise:
The controller's gamepad/mouse switch.. it should be a raised tab rather then an indedent at the very least, I don't have the nails to use comfortably, it should be switchable with your thumb not your nail.
Also the screws on the controller aren't your standard phillips (+) screws, nor allen keys.
I like to open my controllers with a Precision Screwdriver set and clean the contact points, I know of others that do also.
For an "open" hardware device, this is the only sore point for me.
Lastly, most TV's now have a USB port.. the power specs to me looks like it could run off USB power:
http://support.madcatz.com/Knowledg.../172/what-is-mojos-range-of-power-consumption
Like android phones, use a USB cable with a USB adapter.. I have too many bricks in my power adapter
Having the DC in and the headphone jack next to each other is a pain, I have make sure I'm not putting DC in the headphone jack.
Having the MicroSD card under the HDMI makes hot swapping next to impossible, very hard to get to with the plastic molding so close.
MC some more feedback,
The android UI works okay in gamesmart mode, but there's just one thing that's frustrating me.
When holding down the mojo button to get to the listing of the running apps, the CTRLR in gamesmart mode can't traverse nor select an app.
If this could be fixed, then changing from game/mouse mode wouldn't be needed at all while using the andriod desktop/UI :good:
Cheers

I really second this point, it is so annoying to have those buttons when watching a film with xmbc. In games a bit less, but still it sucks.
Also, most people are probably going to plug in a keyboard, at least from time to time, but it would be nice to have a gamepad-friendly virtual keyboard, like the one of SteamOS. I.e. search "SteamOS Controller Input" as I cannot post links
HDCP + kernel
I wasn't expecting HDMI HDCP, but I guess it makes sense.
It's a pain when trying to capture HD gameplay, but I guess that wont change.
oh And while I'm here, it would be really really really .. really cool and open of mad catz to one day realese the kernel source of the mojo (or just the config settings) so we can compile our own hardware support
I know the shield had their kernel on github, not sure what happened to it tho, great idea too!
Kernel would be great so we can compile in CIFS support to mount network shares in the OS!
Huh I thought releasing the kernal source sounded pretty wild but after seeing stuff like Motorola releasing the Moto G kit kat kernel this seems like something that Mad Catz should totally do.

If I'm not wrong, they MUST release the kernel source code. It is just a Linux kernel with the android patches and maybe some custom modification. Because of the Linux license (GPL v2) any of us can ask for the code and the vendor must provide it at no additional cost.
HOWEVER, if the bootloader is not unlocked and/or you do not have root access then you cannot do anything with useful the sources: you can recompile the kernel, you can compile all the modules you want, BUT you cannot load the new kernel into the Mojo and you cannot insert the new modules into the kernel.
Nowadays many hardware vendors publish a semi-official way to have root access or to unlock the bootloader. Let's hope that the "hacking friendly" promise that Mad Catz put forward is not just a dishonest selling point.
Controller Keyboard input Method

I have a usb hub plugged into my 2.0 port with two usb drives attached. Both show as mounted in the settings (along with my SD card). Although I can read off of my usb drive via file explorer, I can't read off the drives with emu apps such as nes.emu and fpse etc. So I just use my usb drives for storage copy files to the sd when needed.
As a hard drive junkie, I'm gonna throw in a feature I'd like to see: Cut the power to USB when the unit goes into sleep mode if an external drive or thumb drive is detected. My tablet does this, and I'm able to disengage my hard drive without worry of data corruption...
Unfortunately on the MOJO my drive constantly runs (even after I unmount it)...Is there a way to cut off power when ejecting/unmounting a drive? Cut power when the system goes to sleep? Both of those are kind of important.

When you say show up as mounted in the settings what do you mean? I have a usb hub and have 2 hds plugged in but since when a disk drive gets mounted and it's 'home directory' is mnt>usbdrive. Whatever disk drive was plugged in first gets to be in this folder and the 2nd plugged in drive while recognized has no home directory.Thats why other apps can't recognize multiple disk drives only one usb drive. What I want is a mnt>usbdrive>usb1, usb 2, etc directory setup.
What is the likelihood that in a future update (if it happens) that they will include an option to HIDE the soft button bar.
This is a deal-breaker for me. I like my movie-watching experience and game playing experience to be immersive. Having a menubar there ALL THE TIME might as well be a form of adware as far as I'm concerned.
What's the point of a micro game console experience if it always looks like YOUR SMART PHONE is streaming to TV because the menubar is there to remind you? How stupid can they be?? Did they just release this a proof of concept? To say, "Hey, look what we did! Screw the customer experience..."
Please tell me "not to worry" or a "future custom rom" or "mod" will be "released soon to address."
If not, I'm returning this hunk of junk when it arrives.

What's funny is I got in on a pretty could deal on it. On clearance for $160, free postage ;-p. There was only two but what surprised me (and made me cautious) is how does something go on clearance after only be out such a short time? There was only 2 left and I got in on the last one.
We'll have to see. Might actually think about that offer if I can break even. But if that work around works for me, then at least I fixed the deal-breaker for me. Hopefully the MOJO devs are listening and will fix ALL of this in their supposed update. My fear is will that update happen at all.....hopefully there is enough of a homebrew/mod community out there to at least squeeze out one custom rom that will give the users the experience they deserve. My 2 cents.
Please add this issue to the list!

:good: It's a great feature, I use it a lot, even in gamesmart mode it works!
Shame you have to switch to mouse mode to select an app.. is there any chance of better navigating the android UI in gamesmart mode in the new Android 4.4?

This is what I'm saying, you switch out to desktop, then go to tasks but can't pick an app in game mode.
You have to switch back to mouse mode, pick the game and switch back:

If there's one issue kitkat fixes, I really hope it's this one:good:

Nexus Player on/off switch

I picked up the NP yesterday from Walmart for $50. Couldn't find any at the Best Buys in my area. So I got home and discovered what I purchased was a return item. Someone's account was already on it and the remote was really clicky(loud clicks) and there was a ton of apps on it. After returning the device and making sure I picked up something in shrink wrap this time. I got home installed and setup Kodi and watched a movie.
So getting ready for bed and i'm shutting everything down and I can't turn this thing off. I held the button on the bottom which only seams good for Bluetooth pairing. Held buttons on the remote, nothing seemed to work. So I ended up just unplugging it. I know there has to be a better solution, something simple I'm missing.
Any help, how do I turn it off properly?
Also I hooked an external drive through and OTG(on the go) adapter and nothing, do I need to be rooted to watch movies from an external HD?
The nexus player doesnt have an off switch. its meant to constantly run because it uses so little power (i assume since its got an atom chip).
I sideloaded an app called stick mount. im not sure if it requires root, as i already had rooted for another purpose, but with stick mount i was able to mount a flash drive with the nexus player. I assume it would need root to do this, however, google just released android M today, and i read somewhere that it supposedly is support to support external storage devices natively. So crossing my fingers for that.
There is a program that works for rebooting if you have root. The shutdown option does not work.
TV Boot.
I'm rooted and staying on 5.0, so this app comes in handy for rebooting.
